The studio (bedroom in the loft, 2-3 people) is located right on the water at the mouth of the river to Chedabucto Bay, halfway from Halifax International Airport to the Cape Breton Highlands. Cottage and studio can be rented individually, or together with friends, for family reunions, weddings or other celebrations. It offers an ideal place to relax. Breakfast on the beach, watching bald eagles, canoeing and enjoying the sunset around the campfire in the evening. Fishing directly in front of the cottage and deep sea fishing can be arranged by arrangement. It is highly recommended to take day trips to explore the beautiful surroundings with their countless lakes, rivers, forests and breathtaking sea bays and beaches.

- "We had an amazing three day stay at Irmgard’s cottage on the water. The location was fabulous and exactly as advertised. The cabin was clean and comfortable with a gorgeous view that immediately felt so peaceful and relaxing. We saw bald eagles on the island opposite and one even flew over for a personal visit, settling on top of the tree right next to us!! The cabin was off the beaten track, but we appreciated the calm and tranquility and sheer beauty of the place. There was a well stocked general store up the road in Boylston, a must visit, and Guysborough also had a commercial area. We didn’t try any local restaurants as we spent some time traveling to other areas of interest: Louisbourg to visit the amazing historical recreated fortress - well worth it but makes for quite a long day and Cape George for beautiful walks and gorgeous coastal views. Irmgard was a delightful person to deal with and went above and beyond to return an item that I had forgotten in the cottage; so very kind. Just a final note, tall people cannot stand up in the bedroom due to the low ceiling but it adds to the charm and cozy feel of the place. I highly endorse and recommend a stay here, you won’t be disappointed."

It's big enough for up to 8 people and has a full kitchen with the necessary amenities; dining and sitting area, two bathrooms, two bedrooms, a covered deck in front, fire pit and picnic table. There is also a wood stove to keep it toasty in colder months. The bedroom downstairs has a queen bed and the large open room upstairs a king and 3 twin beds. You can also bring your furry friend for an additional $15 a night. Parking is located right behind chalet. Linens, towels, and soap provided.

- "We were to be in the Green Chalet (the word chalet is quite misleading). Informed host we would be arriving late. Chalet could only be identified by the roof colour, which in the dark is not visible. A sign on the cabin would have been helpful. The breakfast (an additional charge) was watery scrambled eggs, cold pancakes, dry bread, frozen raspberries. The manager was to be in at 8:00, finally showed up at 8:25. The other staff were unable to assist with check-in. As a result, we were unable to make it to our Celtic Colours reservation on time to participate. The cabin itself was dirty (fans, etc)."

A brand new hotub has been installed adjacent to the new stamped concrete patio for your enjoyment! A relaxing soak is a great way to wind down after a day of vacation!

If weather doesn't permit for outside dining and/or activities, the table and games can be brought inside to the garage. The garage is also equipped with a dart board. This is a great area for additional entertainment. You have the option of opening the two sliding garage doors as well. This gives you the feeling of being outside and also allows you to have the privacy and beautiful view of the greenery in the comfort of a dry space. You may even see some small wildlife!

The fire pit area is just a short walk from the outside dining area. This quiet space is surrounded by trees and is great for enjoying a nighttime campfire! There is also ample space for washer toss in these out door spaces.

You can hit the 4 wheeling trials right from the chalet. You can unload and hit the trial head just 200 meters up the dirt road. There are some great destinations to experience including our renown cable bridge and Babs look off. If you download Polaris ride command you will have GPS acess to all of our trials.

Included: WiFi, coffee beans and tea, charcoal and propane bbqs, firewood, tv, fishing gear, + canoe. 4.5 star rating by Canada Select. Leaving the cottage empty for three days in between bookings for guest health and safety.

The space
Explorer's Cottage (Registration # RYA2020-000067) is located in the heart of Cape Breton Island in the middle convenient to sightseeing in all directions on a UNESCO biosphere reserve and waterfront on the Bras d'Or, part of the Atlantic Ocean. Cape Breton Island was voted the 1st Best Island in Canada in 2018 and 2019 and the 8th Best Island in the World by readers of Travel + Leisure magazine.

Set on 150 acres of forest and in a botanical-park setting with over 100 specially planted trees, Japanese bridges, a birch forest, and a Japanese garden, Explorer's Cottage is a 4,000 sq foot retreat ideal for multi-generational family groups, friends traveling together, writing or artist workshops, or different families traveling together. Supporting the cottage also helps support the local caretakers.

There is a first floor suite with a private bedroom with a Queen-sized bed, three twin beds, full bathroom with bath and shower, kitchenette with a refrigerator and dish washer, and separate washer and dryer. The first floor suite is perfect for multi-generational guests, different families or friends traveling together, or for guests who keep a different schedule from the rest of the home, such as couples who prefer more privacy, new mothers and fathers, and teens. Guests have a wide range of sleeping arrangements from which to choose throughout the entire home.

For reservations made after May 1, 2019 when the price of the first floor suite began to be included, with smaller groups who do not need the first floor suite will be provided a discount per night reserved.

Guests can create their own experiences with activities, including nature walks with local guides, paddling a canoe or stand up paddleboard from the private beach, fishing, learning about vegetable gardens, picking raspberries, and picking fruits. The property has three outdoor grills and two outdoor picnic tables, so guests can make meals in the gourmet kitchen with produce they pick themselves from the property and fish that they catch themselves in the area with a choice of three cooking locations on the vast property.

Explorer's Cottage is furnished as a European country escape, with antiques in a modern way. Walk through a boreal forest, then a birch forest, on a winding asphalt pathway to the waterfront, picking blackberries along the way. There are often grouse sightings along the pathway, as well as woodpeckers, blue jays, hummingbirds, and many other bird and rare moth species.

Guests are provided fresh coffee and tea selections by guest services to welcome them to the cottage.

Guest access
Guests have all of Explorer's Cottage at their disposal, except for the garage and utility room, including the first floor suite. If guests have a smaller group, then the first floor suite cost can be deducted from the rental price. All the closets are empty. There are hangers, extra feather duvets, extra blankets, extra towels, and luggage racks in each bedroom. There is also included coffee beans, a coffee grinder, a French press, a traditional coffee maker, and included herbal teas.

Other things to note
Electric Vehicles: Please note that electric vehicles are welcome, but please do not plug them into the home. The home has very different circuitry, and plugging electric cars into the home has caused entire panels of appliances on different floors to fail. Please let me know in advance if you will be bringing an electric car, and I can guide you to a place to plug in the vehicle/s.

First Floor Suite: There is a first floor suite now available for guests who book the entire property, consisting of the upper two main floors. The first floor suite has one Queen sized bed and three twin beds, sleeping a total of five additional guests. The space also has a kitchenette with a refrigerator, dishwasher, sink, and separate clothes washer and dryer. The space is now included with the main reservation and has been surprisingly multi-generational families traveling together, for separate families traveling together, and for writing workshop groups. The space is also ideal for groups with individuals who have a different schedule than the rest of the house, such as groups traveling with babies or teens.

Accessibility: There is a ramp to the front door that may be used for luggage or wheelchair access. If the ramp is not used, there are about four steps up to the cottage front door. The master bedroom with a king-sized bed is located on the first floor without any additional stairs, along with a full ensuite bathroom. Two more bedrooms, each with a Queen-sized bed, are located up a flight of stairs. The library, loft area, and a full bathroom are also located upstairs. All bedrooms, the library, and the loft have private balconies.

Housekeeping: Please note that deep clean housekeeping is once a week, where sheets will be laundered and changed. Please note that there is a washer and dryer in the home for sheets, towels, and clothing that guests are welcome to use in between housekeeping services.

Guests have access to children's toys. These toys are in drawers below the microwave in the kitchen and meant to be kept with Explorer's Cottage for other children.

Taxes: Please note that the 15% GST Nova Scotia provincial tax is included in the cost of each booking. Guests do not need to make any additional payments.

Waiver: By accepting this booking, guests are accepting the risk and liability of the use of the cottage, the deck to the water, and the surrounding grounds, as well as agreeing to caution and responsibility in their use. Guests understand that the cottage is located within a forest by accepting this booking.

It’s big enough for eight people and has a full kitchen, dining and sitting area, two bathrooms, two bedrooms, a covered deck, fire pit, and picnic table. There’s a wood stove for colder months. The downstairs bedroom has a queen bed, and the large open room upstairs has a king and three twin beds. A futon is in the living room. Linens, towels, and soap provided. You can bring your dog for $15 a night. A large hot tub is also available on your deck.

The space
Your chalet is part of the whole Cabot Shores Wilderness Resort with gardens, forest, apple orchard, Church Pond and access to the Atlantic Ocean. If you like the great outdoors, you can go for walks and swims, rent a kayak, canoe or paddle board, explore waterfalls with two hikes out the door, have a fire under the stars... Or if you're playing an instrument, jam on the stage in our lodge. Or take some time and relax in a hot tub, join us for morning meditation and more.

Guest access
While staying with us, you have access to two big common rooms in our main lodge. Downstairs you'll find a ping pong/pool table, books and games. Upstairs we have a great room with a big wood stove, comfy couches, lots of books, free wifi and this is also where our Bistro is located. We serve breakfast and dinner, both featuring homemade and as often as possible homegrown food from our organic garden. Packed lunches are available after request, too.

Other things to note
There is no cell reception in Indian Brook. A few kilometers up and down the road, reception is available if needed. Otherwise we have a landline our guests can use and free wifi in the main lodge.
