- "All good" - "Previous reviews made me think this place was a gamble, but it was quite clean, very comfy beds and pillows, and noise was minimal. Only complaints were a balky elevator (fell the last several inches, it seemed) and no toaster at breakfast (just a toaster oven). Buy a toaster NOW, guys!!!" - "Had two nights here in 413. Very comfortable room with two good sized and comfortable beds. Bedding was all clean and fresh with a good number of pillows. I am not a huge fan of carpet, but this appeared clean with no stains or smells. The entrance floor and bathroom were tiled and all were in good condition and clean. The closet had adequate hangers, a laundry bag, iron and ironing board. There was also a small stool to rest a case/bag. Room heater/AC was good but, like most of this type, the thermostat was inaccurate. 62f was more like 68f, but once you get the hang of it you get a comfortable setting. I turned it off at night as the fan kicking in can be a little noisy if you're a light sleeper. Bathroom was clean and in good condition, with some modern looking fittings. Shower had plenty of hot water and super strong pressure. Quite invigourating. Breakfast had a good selection but two issues I had were that they had a pretty useless mini toaster oven to toast bagels, bread etc. Practically useless and it took me over 5 minutes to get a slice of bread even sightly browned. Also, please ditch the horrendous excuse for sausage. Apart from that, everything was great, fresh and again very clean. Staff were on hand to keep everything full and clean. All the staff here were extremely friendly and all greeted me as I walked in and around. The young lady at the desk in the afternoon and evening was very pleasant and nicely talkative. Highly recommended! "

- "My husband and I BOOKed this beautiful, newly renovated property with books everywhere, for a romantic early Valentine's day so we could enjoy Longwood Gardens and the Brandywine Art Museum. Bala Farm Cottage, located 2 miles from the center of West Chester, was built around 1850 to serve as a "library" (1800's version of a man cave, we think) at a time when the main Bala Farm house (built in 1759) was being used as a boarding school for boys. It's undoubtedly been employed in a variety of functions since then, and when we bought the property we thought it would make a perfect guest cottage.

We've made a few changes to give the cottage some of the comforts that help make a very enjoyable stay. The wet bar is located at the end of a quaint entry hall, and has a small refrigerator and microwave, in addition to a K-cup coffee machine with complimentary pods provided, an electric kettle with tea. There is also a sliced bread toaster provided, but please be aware that there are no cooking appliances, utensils or abilities beyond these.

The study includes a love seat with pillows and additional blankets for staying cozy in winter months, across from a gas fireplace that warms the room nicely. There is a small table with two chairs that can be used both for dining or as a workspace. For those looking to spend quite a bit of time working, there is a desk against the wall that provides more of a formal workspace. There are also built-in cabinets in the study, which serve as a sort of panty, holding wine glasses, plates & utensils (we've switched to paper & plastic since COVID began), salt & pepper, napkins and bottle openers. To round out the seating, there are a couple of padded accent chairs that provide additional options.

The curved staircase leads up to a cozy bedroom with a comfortable queen bed and a spacious bathroom. There are both privacy curtains and wood shutters, so you can either fill it with natural light, or keep things dark for a longer slumber. There is no closet in the bedroom, but there is a suitcase stand and a garment rack for hanging clothes. The bathroom includes a shower and small vanity with mirror, as well as closeted shelves, with some basic amenities such as shampoo & conditioner and body wash.

There is a large stone fire pit just steps from the cottage that guests are welcome to use, with adirondack chairs and picnic table nearby, that you may find perfect for enjoying an evening glass of wine or cold beer outdoors. All of the trees on the property mean that there is plenty of wood nearby for enjoying fires if the weather allows (we keep one stack next to the fire pit).

Please note that the house and cottage are within a small development. However, we are on top of a hill at the end of a cul-de-sac and surrounded by trees, so there is a private feel and you hardly notice when you are on the property and in the cottage, but you will notice when you drive into the neighborhood.

There is also a third firepit on the screened in porch where you can relax and take in the nature around you, especially soothing while listeing to the rain, allowing you to enjoy a delicious meal at the spacious teak dining table.

Take a walk through the woods and commune with nature, where wildlife abounds, including red foxes, red-tailed hawks, groundhogs, white tailed deer, an occasional bald eagle and many other varieties of beautiful and interesting songbirds and woodpeckers.

If you have an event with more than 50 guests, we are excited to partner with a Michelin star chef (former executive chef at the Waldorf Astoira Hotel) to accommodate your needs. Chef Paul is able to host large events including weddings of up to 100 plus guests, at his beautiful barn in Chester County (please inquire). Chef is also available to design a bespoke menu for you and your guests, and will be your personal chef at the Lodge for smaller occasions of up to 50 guests. Please inquire about any events at the Barn or the Lodge, additional fees will apply. Also upon request we are partnered with an interior designer who will craft beautiful custom floral arrangements, per your desires, at an additional charge.

There is ample parking for up to 10 cars in the driveway near the house. Any additional parking needs during an event will be discussed.

The Lodge is idyllic during a snowstorm with a warm fire, while the autumn leaves changing color add to the beauty of the seasons. Spring brings new growth and late June and early July bring the harvest of the wild raspberries, always a delicious treat!

The space
Please read! So much to say about this historic space! Pull up to the private drive with room for 3+ cars. In the summer months relax on the deck or swing on the tire swing. Inside the eat-in kitchen has everything you need to prep a meal. The living room has a comfy sofa & chair, a chest full of games ready to be put to use. Netflix is available as well. The bathroom features a tub ready for you to soak it all in and relax! Two bedrooms are on the first floor and the third is a loft-style space. It will be hard to choose!

****Please note you have to walk through the main bedroom to get to the loft. The main is right off the living room. The second bedroom is attached to the main bedroom and the bathroom. This is a small cottage. If you want bedrooms that are far away from each other this place is not for you. There are window units, not central air.****

Cool Fact: The Painter family built this house in the late 1700's. It used to sit on a horse farm. The William Painter farm is nearby and used to be a stop on the Underground Railroad.

This house sits off of route one which may be noisy doing the rush hour traffic. It is not a secluded space.

There are two window ac units located on the first floor and lots of air circulation within the house. There is no ac unit in the loft. There are fans provided.

The first bedroom is off the living room. You have to walk through the first bedroom to access the loft. The second bedroom can be accessed by the first bedroom or the bathroom. The bathroom has an entrance through the living room as well.

It is a 15 minute drive to Septa and Amtrak trains.

The spring and summer offer great bird watching, including pileated woodpeckers, hawks, waterfowl and hummingbirds. The nearby ChesLen Preserve is a short 2 mile walk on country roads. We are walking distance to the Embreville soccer fields and 3 miles to United Sports. The loft is located directly on a well know cycling road. World famous Longwood Gardens is only 5 miles away, as is the Chadds Ford Winery. The well known Victory Brewing is only a 10 minute ride. All the Brandywine Valley attractions are a short scenic drive away. It is 35 miles to the Pottstown and to the Lancaster Outlets.

Luxury Appointments:The sleeping area features a memory foam King size bed, lounge chair with ottoman, and an oversized whirlpool tub.

AC: The Loft is cooled by twin mini-split air conditioners. Most summer days, the large trees, 12 foot ceilings and large ceiling fans provide a pleasant temperature.

Entertainment: The living area features a new Samsung 60" LED TV; 5.2 surround sound system and comfortable leather love-seat and side chair.

Large Deck: The spectacular deck (160 sq. ft) was built for relaxing under the treetop canopy. A brand new gas grill and table with chairs for four adds to your enjoyment. A nearby feeder brings a host of birds and adds to the view.

Resort like Bath: The luxurious bath features a double sink, extra large travertine shower with standard and 7' rain style shower heads, and heated flooring.

I'm 70 and had no problem, but for those my age, I would say several small bags rather than one oversize bag would be more manageable."

Whole House with one car detached garage

- "The house is older but renovations have modernized the kitchen and baths while retaining the unique character of the original structure. We really enjoyed the outside back patio space for visiting and access to the garage. Family members (5 of us) ranged in age from 65-75 and luckily we are all in great physical shape because the stairs heading up to the bedrooms could be a bit challenging. We enjoyed the kitchen layout, lighting, and the quality of the cooking gear but as others have pointed out some basics are lacking like a colander and a vegetable peeler. We brought our own coffee maker along because there is only one of those pod contraptions at the house. The only negatives were the lack of hand towels and washcloths for the bathrooms (there was only one of each) and the sofa bed mattress could use an upgrade. We also could not open any of the windows as they were stuck shut. Maybe that was good thing because the weekend student partyers walking by at 3 a.m. did wake up folks sleeping in the front bedroom. Overall, a positive experience and appreciated the prompt communications with Derek to answer questions."

The school house is directly attached to a full time residence of 2 farmers, one little farmhand & 2 friendly dogs that you are most likely to meet upon arrival. This is a working residence complete with a lively yard full of free range chickens, ducks, and sheep. Everyone is friendly but please be mindful of the electric fence that keeps our livestock contained. Directly across the street, you'll see our cows and sheep grazing lazily at dusk and always enjoy ear scratches. Along the property is almost 50 acres of forested land with cleared paths for your enjoyment. The forest borders our 2 acre organic food production that you are also welcome to visit. You might hear us going to and fro as we are a working farm. This property was acquired by our family and the schoolhouse has been completely renovated in 2023. We are so excited to welcome guests to enjoy our little piece of history. The area is full of activities that is guaranteed to suite everyone's interest. We are down the road from ChesLen preserve and Northbrook canoe company, both places you can spend the day on the water or immersed in nature or a moments drive from downtown West Chester, where you can grab a drink and do some shopping. We are surrounded by delicious food and only an hour from the city life of Philly, truly the perfect balance of city and rural life.

You have full access to the school house which is complete with full kitchen, bathroom, sun room and cellar that contains a washer/drier. The patio out front has a bbq, tables and chairs. There is also a firepit for your enjoyment.

The attached stone house, backyard, garage and barn are private. Additional visitors are permitted with host approval.

- "We spent eight nights at the Country School House at Salidago Farm. Our stay was so relaxing. The School House was immaculate and well-equipped. We have already planned to return next year. Great for relaxing: cozy, comfortable, 1 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment located in downtown West Chester, Pa. Close driving/ walking distance to local restaurants, bars, stores, and less than 1 mile away from the university; it is the perfect area to explore. Keep your mind at ease in plush queen size bed or enjoy a quiet evening browsing Netflix on a Roku smart TV. Help yourself to coffee, cookware, and a full size air mattress in closet. Check in process is as followed. Upon arrival you will be given instructions to access call box to be buzzed in. You will then be directed to the unit where you will be given a access code to enter. There will be a key with fob that will give you access to both entrances. There are three parking options, two in which are paid one is free. There is metered parking in front of unit, nearby garage parking for $10 a day. The last option is street parking on intersecting block( direction will be given to access all three options).

- "This was like booking a hotel room in a city. Check in was a little tricky in that you have to pull up in front of building, unload stuff, take up to apartment (3rd floor), use code to open door, get key to front door of building (which we could never get to work), pick up parking pass, leave belongings, return to car and move it to parking garage a block away and then walk back. All of which we had to do in the rain unfortunately. This was stated (a little less clear) in the listing, I just didn’t realize it was to this extent. Apartment was clean. The couch is NOT suitable for sleeping as there is a large window to the atrium that is very bright and you can hear people coming and going all night. The bedroom is in the back and was very quiet. I needed something to write with while I was there and couldn’t find anything. That would be my only suggestion- pen and paper. Would stay again as it was a great centrally located place. Contact person was easy to reach, friendly and very helpful."

- "We stayed in Dave's lovely home for 1 month while our own home was under renovation. Our college student joined us and the house was perfect for the 3 of us. The upstairs suite with king bed, laundry room, bathroom, and lounge area was perfect for the returning college student. The rest of the house was great, and our dogs loved the backyard. The location was perfect... every time we put in directions we were 2 miles from where we needed to be. And Dave was great!"
