It was built to a high specification with; 2 en-suite bathrooms, open-plan kitchen and dining room with large terrace overlooking the bay of Lajes. The lower ground floor provides a large open plan lounge, real fire, TV, a further double bedroom and a shower room. A patio area to the front of the property is accessed by double doors. The property enjoys a generous sized plot overlooking the sea. The house is split level with external terraced gardens and a large swimming pool & sun terrace.

The swimming pool area is gated but guests must close the gates to ensure the safety of babies and children. Babies and children must be supervised at all times. The internal staircase has a gate at the top. The balcony rail next to the dining area, securing the drop to the lower ground floor, is fitted with a mesh.

- "Looking for places to stay on Pico Island, I thought, like someone else wrote in their review, this was too good to be true. But it is actually very much like in the pictures on the profile, and then some! Apart from the beauty of it, you can tell how thoughtfully this accomodation has been planned. Starting from the detailed and informative description on the profile and in the house book, the navigation instructions, the easy check in (key box) and - not to forget - the kind and helpful contact to the owners and their local family/staff that keep the property in shape. The house itself is situated in Silveira, about a 5 minute drive (yes, you absolutely need a car!) from Lajes, the local ex whalers village. You're right on the edge, directly next to the sea, maybe 100 meters away from an easily accessible bathing site (recommended at high tide). You can hear the sea and the Cory's Shearwater (owa ow ow). There is a hotel and restaurant in walking distance that we didn't visit. The layout of the house and pool area is extremely spacious. 2 rooms with A/C in an almost hotel-like configuration with personal bathrooms and 1 room for 2 people with an adjacent bathroom. A huge covered balcony with sea view and lounge furniture. The living room with 2 nice sofas and a big TV and internet router. A great pool deep enough to dive in with a relax and barbecue area. A kitchen with all the good stuff and a washer/dryer. More than enough (pool) towels! Hope to come back!!"

There is 1 bedroom upstairs and the remaining bedrooms were downstairs. Again, lots of space! There is a washer but no dryer. We didn't mind, we enjoyed hanging our clothes outside to dry. The baby gate at the top of the stairs as well as the bottom of the stairs is extremely helpful and put my mind at ease with a running 1 year old. The few times we reached out to Joao, he was quick to reply. He provided us some great recommendations on places to visit during our stay as well. We would love to stay here again next time were in Sao Miguel! :)"

The downstairs is well air conditioned but the upstairs is not. Luckily it doesn’t get the hot in the Azores. On the third day the downstairs toilet started leaking which left us with a single bathroom for my husband and I and three teen age daughters. It was a very disappointing stay."

The Villa:
Villa Várzea is a centenary Villa located in the West side of São Miguel. Here our guests can enjoy nature and peacefulness away from the crowds. There are cats and birds roaming the gardens, and the beauty of the mountain in the background.

The villa is composed by the Grand House with 3 Suites (Garden Suite, Charming Suite and Country Suite) all with bathtubs but no kitchen, the Horse Stable remodeled into our 3 Nests (Nomad Nest, Hiker Nest and Design Nest) all with showers and kitchen, and our Birds Cabin on the backyard (with shower and kitchen). You can rent them separately, or combined for a group vacation, especially the Grand House which is perfect for groups of 6-8 people because when you rent it fully, you have access to large common areas and a kitchen for your private use.

All accommodations are self-catering and self-check in. Cleaning and maintenance staff are available onsite during the day for any issues that may arise, and the host is available via phone anytime. What´s the best time to visit the island?

We get this question a lot! Weather in the Azores can be anything and everything all year round, although neither too cold nor hot, it can be rainy, sunny, gloomy, foggy, windy, glorious, a dramaqueen and full of rainbows, a chameleon every day but definitely humid all the time. Both the High Season (March-September) and the Low Season (October-February) have their charms. Starting in May flowers start blooming everywhere, restaurants will return to their normal schedules after the low season, the ocean will get smoother and warmer, also prices will become more expensive for rentals, accommodation and flights. From October onward the greens are even greener, thermal pools will be perfect, hiking trails and viewpoints will not be crowded and of course prices will be more friendly. It can rain, be foggy or sunny at any time. So our question really is not when will you come but for how many days will you stay. You should allow a minimum of 7 days for your vacation, so you can play along with the weather so that a rainy or foggy day will not set you back. Sometimes one part of the island is rainy and the other is sunny, so having time also allows you the flexibility to not follow a set plan.

Cars rentals are usually cheap in the low season (October - February) and expensive in the high season (March-September), so if you are coming during the high season we suggest you book in advance.

Thermal pools are open all year round, and for Caldeira Velha specifically, it’s advisable to book admission online at least a day in advance.

Restaurants will be very busy in the High Season and many of them will have long periods during low season, so it’s always good to plan your meals by checking their schedules beforehand.

We would not advise island hopping for short vacations, especially in winter when your flight can get cancelled due to windy conditions. At least a one week stay is advisable for São Miguel island but if then you have more time you can fly to:

Santa Maria - 2 days
Pico - Faial - São Jorge - 2 days for each island minimum (there is a ferry boat connection all year round between these 3 islands)
Flores - Corvo - 3 days for the combination of both (there is a boat service between them)
Terceira - 3 days
Graciosa - 2 days

The smaller the island, the fewer accommodations and carrentals are available. During high season it’s mandatory to book these in advance.

- "We loved our one night at Monique’s place. We adored the guest book, sweet hospitality touches, and quick communication. This is a prime location for the sete cidades and ferraria!" - "This is a beautiful old property. We had the country suite- a huge room with sofa, table, bed and ttached very large bathroom and many architectural features. Staff was great and could not be more helpful in explaining where to go and some good local restaurants. It is quiet and safe. really not much happeningin this town- church and 1 little market. A beautiful breakfast can be delivered to your door at 8:30 AM for 12.50 euros which I would recommend since you would have to drive to have breakfast in the room there is a Nopresso machine and tea pot (local tea- only tea plantation in Europe) in the room and a small fridge. Everything is fresh- the fruit, juices, smoothies, breads, eggs, homemade jams, etc.(Thank you Rita!) Really enjoyed our stay. "

4)Please be respectful of the neighbors. In Portugal, noise must be reduced to a minimum after 11 pm(23:00).Remember, you are on holidays, but the people around you are not. Try to put yourself in their shoes.

5)For Security make sure you ALWAYS lock the house doorwhen you ENTER and LEAVE it.

6) House not suitable for pets.

7) No parties or events are allowed.

8) White Towels – bath use only, please avoid stains. Towels can't be removed from the property (i.e. for beach use). Separate beach towels can be rented for this purpose.

Someone put a lot of time and effort Into the tile work throughout the house. The kitchen is more than adequate for cooking meals. If you are inclined, the outdoor stone oven is awesome for making pizza. There is plenty of hot water for all our family's needs. The Wi-Fi works great. The pool is fantastic. We have spent many hours ours in the pool enjoying the beautiful view of the the Azorian countryside. If you want to watch television, you can screen cast from your device on to the TV.The off street parking was very helpful.. It is a little tight for a rental minivan, but it but it works. Quite honestly, we felt that the pictures did not do justice for for the location.. We feel like it is much better in person. I would recommend Refugio do Sol to my friends."

It was a quiet and peaceful area, but you will definitely need a car as there is nothing but homes nearby. You should know that the listing is misleading. The listing said the home is air conditioned. Not true. There are 3 bedrooms on the second level and two bathrooms. There is air-conditioning on the second level ONLY. The bedroom and 2 bathrooms downstairs and all of the living areas downstairs are not air conditioned. We were uncomfortably warm downstairs. The owner said to open the windows and sliding doors to cool the downstairs. There are no screens on the windows or sliding doors, so we then had tons of flies in the house. So, it was not a good experience for us, especially those in the downstairs bedroom. We tried to spend most of our time outside, but it rained quite a bit while we were there. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this home unless you are prepared to go without air conditioning or you like flies."
