- "The owner was super-helpful with advance information about directions, the code for the front door, and so on, which got everything off to a great start. The surrounding area and views are absolutely beautiful, too; you're in the countryside with cows grazing and birds singing. The place itself was super-clean, super-functional -- basically, I said to the owner that we loved it because it really felt like home. Everything, from the owner's communication (always quick when I had a question) to the place itself projected that we were welcome! This included the way the rooms were set up (and very comfortable bed) and a really nicely set-up kitchen (with Puerto Rican coffee and some pantry shelves/fridge items that were very useful!) One night, when we thought about grilling out, the owner very generously offered us the use of his gas grill. Puerto Rico hospitality and friendliness at its best! Would highly recommend! The Epic Mountain Jungle Casita, dubbed "the coffee house," is a historic coffee processing mill located near the top of a mountain on an old coffee plantation, with expansive views, fresh air, blue skies, pure mountain spring water, and an assortment of in-season tropical fruits. It has been completely renovated and turned into a comfortable, tranquil space. The property encompasses 40 acres but is surrounded by hundreds of acres of pristine jungle and mountain ridges along with miles of hiking trails with some of the most scenic views in all of Puerto Rico.

In the fall of 2024, we completed a new covered rooftop terrace for additional relaxation space and nature watching enjoyment, as well even more opportunities to take in panoramic views of the valley (and ocean) below, and our epic sunsets. The terrace includes a small dinette, a hammock, and a place to lounge, all tucked behind a privacy screen.

The Casita has a window fan (average temps are about 72 and pleasant year around), and features a queen bed, a private bathroom with a window looking off a lovely jungle valley, a small desk, and a small kitchenette with everything you need to cook full meals: a microwave, induction burner, toaster oven, instant pot, air fryer, blender, and an apartment-sized refrigerator.

The Casita is surrounded by herb gardens and banana trees, along with many opportunities to commune in nature on designated chairs and benches scattered throughout the property.

Our property is remote and ideally suited to guests who are looking to unplug, commune with nature, find spiritual and emotional healing (inquire about our many therapeutic services), and/or guests who also want to explore some of the nearby attractions, like the well-known Canyon Blanco, or Tanama River. There’s also the option of booking one of our guided experiences to a special off-the-beaten-path adventure. Our property includes several miles of epic self-guided hiking trails. In order to take full advantage of our property and surrounding attractions, we encourage guests to book 3 nights or more when possible.

The town of Utuado is about 30 minutes away by car on a narrow, winding road and we are located at the end of a steep 1/2 mile dirt road. We will meet you at the start of our neighborhood and then we will transport you from a parking location near the start of our property to the house if you do not have AWD/4WD. When renting a car, it's helpful to at least have a car with front wheel drive. Once you are here though, you'll literally feel like you are in paradise!

We are located about an hour and 45 minutes from either the San Juan airport or the Aguadilla airport and we are about one hour driving distance both Arecibo and Poncé. We can arrange airport transfers for a fee, either from the airport or to your next destination on the island.

Lares is great for nature lovers since it's situated in the heart of the mountains and coffee growing region. Villa Patria is located in the downtown (but quiet) area. The space
Your home away from home will be a first floor apartment of a colonial-style house within an acre of land. Our family has been living in this land since early 1900s and the current property owners live upstairs on a part-time basis. The main bedroom is furnished with a queen bed, 2 ceiling/wall fans, drawers, and closet space. Second bedroom has two twin beds (trundle style), wall fan, and closet space. The living room area includes a full size sofa bed. Full-size bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, full size refrigerator, washer/dryer, fiber-optic Wi-Fi (up to 100mbps), and water heater. No A/C, but you will not need it thanks to the cool, gentle mountain breeze. In addition, includes ceiling/wall fans in every room and living area. Villa Patria also includes washer/dryer and is located at the back of the property. Self check-in anytime with lock box and code. Parking for 2 cars on the left side of the property. For long term stays, ad-hoc interim cleaning services can be arranged for an additional fee.

Guest access
The guest(s) will have access to the first floor apartment, balcony, laundry area, left side parking, and front yard. Access to upstairs, front creek, and back/sides farm area is not allowed.

Other things to note
Puerto Rico's electric grid is fragile and there might be power, water, and internet outages during your stay. Please remember that these potential outages are outside our control and, usually, the power is back within a couple of hours. Also, the apartment does not include power generator or water reserve. Nevertheless, Villa Patria is very close to the urban center and main hospital so outages in our neighborhood are rare.


Lares is known as "La Ciudad del Grito" (the city of the uprising). Lares was the scene of the events that gave birth to a social revolution against Spain for Puerto Rican independence in 1868, known as "El Grito de Lares".
