Bunk 291 @ the Diamond Bar Ranch
Bed & Breakfast
Park County

For those seeking the peaceful ambience of a working cattle ranch, join us for tranquility & camaraderie. Take home unforgettable memories and plans for a return!

"Bunk 291", which sleeps 2-4, provides the same splendor as its larger companion guesthouse (“The Chalet”): modern comfort set in the glory of its ranching roots as a bunkhouse for cowboys and ranch hands! A welcome interlude in your road adventures... the king + queen bedrooms recharge you while the patio view mesmerizes you!

The space
The historic Diamond Bar Ranch (D-BAR) rose to prominence under the inspired efforts of the locally famous (sometimes infamous) J.C. Nichols (aka. "Kid Nichols"), who had the vision to build many of the grand structures you'll see when you visit us. One of those structures is "Bunk 291", which has its heritage as a bunkhouse for cowboys, ranch hands, and chore boys.

To pique your curiosity, take some time and lose yourself in some incredible archival video on You Tube, which contains 1930s - 1950s video footage of Kid Nichols, his family, and ranch hands at the D-BAR and surrounding areas. Search You Tube for “Kid Nichols Films”.

Renovated to provide modern living comforts, today Bunk 291 focuses on its guests... sheltering them, sharing the D-BAR legacy, creating unforgettable memories, forging new friendships, and giving them a favorite place to return to in the years ahead.

Bunk 291 is bright, cheery, and open while at the same time providing complete privacy for your stay (as it is a standalone guest house). Inside, Bunk 291 features: 2 cozy bedrooms (1 king, 1 queen) outfitted with luxury Biscuit Bedding and restful memory foam mattresses, a full bathroom with double sinks, and a spacious living room curated for relaxation.

Staying true to its bunkhouse heritage, Bunk 291 does *not* have a kitchen (it was built for sleeping); however, we've set up some capabilities to help self-catering options work out. We've got a BBQ grill and a microwave for your use. The bigger-than-a-dorm-fridge mini-fridge can chill your snacks, beverages ,and perishables just fine. All the tableware you need is provided and all you have to do is place your dishes in a tub and set them outside the door: we'll wash 'em up and bring 'em back! Stock up on some coffee or tea pods at the grocery store in town and use the Keurig machine any time of day to put some extra pep in your step. And we're happy to provide you with food/beverage recommendations for the local eateries in town.

Overlooking the Absaroka mountains and the southern fork of the Shoshone River Valley, you are guaranteed the crème de la crème of views from Bunk 291's patio. Fair warning... the probability is high that you will scrap some of your road trip ambitions in favor of settling in to experience the joy of eating, drinking, socializing, napping, and soaking in unforgettable vacation moments at the D-BAR: itineraries be damned!

You can choose to be plugged in (WiFi, HBO/Showtime/Starz/Hulu/Netflix/Amazon, Streaming Music) or unplugged (just the sounds of birds, creeks, and ranching)... perhaps with some literature detailing the colorful history of the Ranch (written by Kid Nichols' sharp-tongued daughter, Lucille Nichols Patrick). Or, perhaps you want to get some exercise with some half-court basketball or try your hand at tennis under the grandeur of 70-foot pines! Runners and cyclists will be in awe with the options surrounding the D-BAR in the South Fork Valley!

We are thankful that you would consider the D-BAR to be part of your life's travel story, especially given so many options. We regard your visit with us as a privilege. We have a passion for hosting, laughing, and creating indelible moments. To have you in our company gives us purpose, and we wake up everyday excited to share this magical American ranch with you.

Guest access
Entering the ranch, Guests pass under the wooden arch that crowns the driveway entrance and then they proceed down the serene, tree-canopied lane to the residential area of the property. Here, Guests find a cluster of 3 white structures... 2 guesthouses ("The Chalet" and "Bunk 291", 15 yards apart) and "the Main house" (home to your Hosts). A standalone guesthouse, Bunk 291 gives Guests the ultimate in privacy and coziness in addition to outdoor space to lounge where they can absorb the stunning sights/sounds of the ranch, the Absaroka mountains, and the ranch land of the Shoshone River valley.

Guests are welcome to roam the 5 acre residential part of the property (children need to be accompanied by an adult at all times), which includes both the tennis and basketball courts.

The D-BAR is a working cattle ranch (the land is leased out to our neighbor ranchers), so we (Hosts and Guests) must ensure there is no interference with daily ranching operations. Therefore, the non-residential area of the ranch is restricted to ranch personnel only. However, we (your Hosts) often arrange time to take Guests on walking tours to see the big red barn in the lower pasture! She really is a site to see (built c. 1931) and we love hearing Guests' ideas on how they would love to see us evolve the structures in the future! Some Guests have even offered to come back and help restore old buildings!

Most of the cattle are moved off of the ranch during our summer season so that the ground can be cultivated for hay (grass/alfalfa) and barley production: that's how the cattle are able to survive this harsh winter climate (lots of high-protein hay). However, you're bound to see a small part of the heard that stays here along with abundant deer and birds.

If you're here in the spring or in the fall, you might get to see a cattle drive!

Other things to note
**Check us out on our Insta handles: DiamondBarRanch, iMetClaudette**

This is our family's ranch: we (your Hosts) live on-site, adjacent to the 2 guest houses that you (our Guests) have the opportunity to experience. You'll be comforted knowing that we have a vested interest in your experience, the views surrounding you, and the people of Cody, Wyoming.

Prior to embarking on our hospitality endeavor, we (your Hosts) were trying to come up with a tag line that could help convey the appeal of the D-BAR to prospective Guests. While ruminating at one of our favorite Cody town haunts, we ended up conversing with visitors to the area who shared their Yellowstone/Cody experience with us. They were having a blast but mentioned they wished they could have found a more memorable and exciting accommodation in Cody.

We, of course, asked them, "What type of accommodation would fulfill that for you?" In a moment of serendipity, they said, "We would love to stay at a working ranch... without having to do any of the work! Just to sit there and take it all in would have been nice."

We told them, "That's exactly the experience we are trying to curate at the D-BAR... a western setting but with upscale, modern comforts." D-BAR Guests can "cut the (proverbial) engines" and enjoy the tranquil moments in the breeze (accompanied by nature's soundtrack) in addition to dipping their toes in to learn a bit about things such as water rights, the colorful history of the D-BAR, and the noble women and men who steward/ranch the land today.

When you depart to move on to your next adventure, our biggest hope is that you'll continue to stay connected with us on our social media platforms so that you can come along for the ride as we refurbish and evolve the Ranch in the years to come... hopefully inspiring you to make return visits so that there will be truth in our parting words, "See you back at the Ranch!" (our version of “aloha”)
