This unique building was constructed in the late 1800's as a shoemaker's cabin and we had it remodeled in 2019 as a contemporary guest cottage. It overlooks our beautiful garden, and is at the base of the Old Burial Hill where Revolutionary heroes are buried. Less than a five minute walk to Gas House Beach, you can watch the sunrise, go for a swim and during low tide walk to Gerry Island. It's a 10 minute walk to shops and restaurants. The historic area around our cottage abounds with charm.
The space
The cottage has a luxury sleep sofa, a dining area, a contemporary tiled and heated bathroom with a walk-in shower, and a kitchenette with a microwave, fridge, induction burner, and coffee maker. There is a private deck with table and chairs, overlooking our garden.
Guest access
The cottage is a stand alone building and is for your use only, along with a private deck.

Why Is it called the Old Shoe Inn?
We named our cottage the ”Old Shoe Inn” primarily to acknowledge its 19th century heritage as a shoemaker’s cabin. During its renovation we discovered ample evidence of shoemaking activities, common in Marblehead during the mid-1800’s as Marblehead transitioned from a robust fishing village to a significant source of women’s and children’s shoes.
Structures like ours (although it is much larger than the many “10-footers”in Marblehead) combined both living and working spaces. At least one old town map shows the building as a designated residence.
During our 37 years of residence, up until its renovation, the building was used for storage, play spaces and a garage. But clearly, for some period in the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was used to fabricate parts of women’s and children’s shoes (soles, uppers, eyelets, etc.) which were then transported to large shoe factories in town for final assembly and distribution. Shoe manufacturing (among other trades) ultimately replaced fishing as Marblehead’s primary industry, and not surprisingly the work was largely performed by the women in the town.
So, a stay in the Old Shoe Inn not only allows our guests to inhabit this history, but it’s also a “shoo-in” for a unique Marblehead experience!
