Create unforgettable moments at this distinctive and family-oriented cabin. Constructed in the 1920s as a work cabin for the California Conservation Corps, its initial purpose was to construct trails in the nearby Los Padres National Forest. Once the trails were finished, the cabin was relocated to its current site in 1930. It has been thoughtfully renovated to preserve its rustic heritage while providing all the contemporary comforts desired for a serene vacation.

The kitchen comes fully equipped with an adorable retro-look fridge/freezer, oven/stove, toaster, kettle, and coffee station, including a French press and coffee grinder, along with all the necessary pots, pans, plates, bowls, glasses, cups, and silverware. We love to cook, so avid homecooks will appreciate some equipment beyond your basic cookware, plus you'll see some of our cookbook collection prominently displayed - please enjoy browsing and using the recipes! The kitchen is stocked with cooking essentials such as salt, pepper, and cooking oil, and when available, you'll also receive a complimentary sampling of our seasonal produce.
Living Space
The open concept main room includes a built-in countertop bar with stools connecting the kitchen to the living room. The leather couch is perfect for gazing out the large windows to the river and mountains. For our music lovers, we have a Bluetooth Marshall speaker to enhance your retreat. We also have LED candles with a remote/timers so you can safely enjoy a candlelit cabin experience! The pool is not heated and is spring fed.
We have a solar powered skimmer that you will notice running in the pool. We have pool towels for you, which you can find rolled in the bedroom closet - please use these at the pool instead of the bathroom towels.

History
Ojala was once a Chumash gathering place, and is located at the confluence of North Fork Matilija Creek and Matilija Creek, where they become the Ventura River. The Chumash believed the area was a power spirit.
In more recent times, it has been a resort and even a training camp for the boxer Jack Dempsey.
Our family has been owners/stewards since 1978. You would be staying in the last remaining cabin, a true piece of Ojai Valley history. Some of the remaining historic structures include the huge 1940's pool shaded by oaks and redwoods, a 300 foot long suspension bridge that hangs over the river, and stacked stone walls.
Around Ojala
The river is a babbling brook in the summer. However, after heavy rainfall, it can become a raging torrent.
We share the canyon with many wild animals, including, but not limited to: mice, squirrels, skunks, bobcats, raccoons, mountain lions, and bears. You might see some, or hear them running around, even on the roof. Don’t be alarmed, just make noise if you walk off the paths. Do watch out for rattlesnakes, ticks, and poison oak (there is Tecnu in the bathroom cabinet should you encounter poison oak). Walk where the gravel or path is clear.
The tap water is from our own spring located up the mountain in the national forest. It comes to us by gravity flow through a collection of spring boxes, storage tanks, and a lot of pipes. It is pure mountain spring water from an aquifer unspoiled by any agricultural or industrial runoff, certified by the state of CA as drinking water. It is filtered but has no chlorine or chemicals added. Please conserve it and enjoy it - it is some of the highest quality drinking water you will find.
There is no cell service at Ojala, but with a few simple steps in your smartphone, you can easily receive phone calls and send texts once you are on the Wifi here. We provide some helpful instructions on how to do this in our on-site guidebook.
Ojala is a quiet, low-use retreat, plus the full-time home for us and a few long term tenants. Please respect the surrounding area by keeping music and other sources of noise to low levels.
Animals
Sorry, we do not allow guests to bring pets. That said, you may see our dog on the property, but she tends to stay by Cory’s side at all times. She is very friendly and may want to say hello if she sees you. We have a coop with ducks as well, and please be mindful of the electric fence on the coop that is always on to keep our ducks safe from prey.
Guest access
- Once your stay is confirmed, we will provide the gate code information.
- Parking for one vehicle is located at the bottom of the stairs; follow signage. Please do not park in driveways or back into spaces. If you wish to unload your luggage at the top of the Cabin, that area may be used for unloading only - please repark your car down below the stairs. The road may not remain blocked as we need access to the orchard above. You will need to reverse and go back the way you came; there is no connection to the driveway if you pull forward. Take care when backing up past the pool.
- Please respect the privacy of all other dwellings at Ojala and refrain from walking on the paths around these homes.
- When available, we leave a sampling of our organically farmed produce, wine, and honey in the Cabin for you to enjoy, but please do not pick the fruit and vegetables you may see while exploring Ojala. If you’d like more during your stay, or to take home with you, we would be happy to sell our produce, eggs, and honey.
- Please be mindful that we do have neighbors and we respect their privacy by staying off of their property.
Other things to note
The Cabin is best suited for guests over the age of 21 who are capable of climbing a flight of stairs from the parking area.
