A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
In 1943 my parents purchased the 80-acre farm, farmhouse and barn for $2,800. In 1944 the current home was built on the site of the old homestead. The white barn is the original barn that was on the property when my parents purchased the farm which makes it about 100 years old.

At the time, America was using all of our resources to fight World War II, therefore building materials were hard to come by. All the lumber used to build the home in 1944 was used lumber bought from a lumber yard in Brighton Illinois.
There was no basement in the original farmhouse, so dad dug the basement with a scoop pulled by a team of mules and as the main support for the house my grandpa hand hewed the beam from a white oak timber found on the farm. This beam is still supporting the homestead to this day!

No electric, no gas, no running water!

It wasn’t until sometimes in the fifties did we have electric, until then we saw by kerosene lamps and mom cooked on a wood stove. There was no running water, but we had a cistern to catch rainwater which was then pumped into the house by a hand pump. You can still see the cistern around the back of the house.

Chicken, pigs and milk cows all lived on the farm.

In 1964 an addition was added onto the living room. In order the make way, the original steps (hand poured) needed to be moved. Daddy had an old John Deer tractor that he used to work the farm; it was all that tractor could do to move those old steps a few feet from the house where they remain today.

In 2003, with the help of my family, the Homestead Retreat was one of the first guest houses to open in Grafton. With a new front porch, the mud room converted into a sunroom, a fresh coat of paint and a few pillows we were ready to go. But mostly it's just like mom and dad left it. Yes, there is running water and indoor plumbing!!

Converting my childhood home into the Grafton Homestead Retreat has been, and still remains, a labor of love.

Grafton Getaway - Cabin is a 2019 renovated home originally built in 1900. The long driveway crosses a spring-fed creek and winds up the hill to this secluded home which is surrounded by trees. Guests often hear the creek's flowing water from the front porch swing. This 1500 square foot home includes a full kitchen with complimentary coffee/tea/hot chocolate. The patio has a gas fire pit and the backyard has a Tiki smokeless fire pit with free firewood. Two hammocks and eight bicycles of all sizes are available for guest use. Watch for butterflies and hummingbirds which are drawn to the property by its many Mimosa Trees. 55 inch Smart TV and DVD player for rainy days. Make yourself at home! This cabin is located on the edge of town in Grafton, Illinois. Grafton is the perfect place for family or a couple’s getaway weekend! Being on the edge of town provides privacy from the commotion of main street but is also less than a mile to most attractions in town. It features 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. Enjoy hanging out or cooking on the spacious deck and having your own yard. There is plenty of room for trailer parking if you are bringing a boat. Also, there is a fire ring in the back yard that you are more than welcome to use. I try to keep fire wood there but it sometimes gets used up before I can restock it. Make yourself at home in this 4-bedroom 3 bathroom large historic house. The house sleeps up to 16 people. It has 3 king beds, 3 queens and two pull out double beds. It has a brand new, very large outdoor patio with seating for 18, a table top fire pit and a barbecue grill. There is a full kitchen upstairs and a family room. A small kitchenette downstairs and a family room.
The location of the Count Me Inn is perfect. You are about two blocks from the loading dock, one block to the Rubel house,four blocks to the Aires sky lift, less than a mile to the Grafton Pub, marina and third chute. If you were going down to the other end of town, you would need to drive. You are very close to all of the shopping in town. There is a coffee shop a block away, and ice cream shop across the street and a gas station a block away. There are board games at the house. We also supply dishes, napkins, and paper towels. We have a Keurig and a full coffee maker.We do have coffee in the house, but if you’d like to bring your own, you are welcome to. There is Wi-Fi that you can connect to. There is plenty of parking as we have five spots of our own and there is also parking on the street that is rarely taken in front of us. This is a big old quirky house. It is not a brand new or modern house. Please look at the pictures and be sure you like them! We don’t wanna get any bad reviews saying the house is old!!!The house is very clean and the beds are comfortable. There is a large TV in each family room. We will send you information a few days before your stay and we will also be available if you need any information on the town or anything to do while you’re visiting. No broom to sweep up crumbs, also why SO MANY dead flies when maid was just there? I picked up (with paper towel) 12 dead flies on floor and they kept appearing , Bathroom set up on front bedroom not good —too small and no place for your stuff around sink."

The Great River Road Bike trail runs through the backyard of the property. Drifters restaurant is located next door for easy carry out. Pet friendly with a one-time $50 fee and please notify us in advance that a pet is coming. This home underwent a full remodel and upgrade prior to going on the rental market, everything within was purchased brand new. This adorable house is fresh and clean and disinfected top to bottom after each reservation. It boasts enough room for several couples or family with extended family. How about a girl's weekend with several of your friends? We have accommodations for ten people, sleeping arrangements, table service, towels and other daily needfuls. The ONLY house in Grafton like it! The home is fully furnished...just bring your personals and your groceries if you wish to cook. Enjoy time outdoors at this home! A large deck spans the front with seating. Smaller deck on the back. Patio set, sling benches, two fire pits in the back yard. Seating on the ground floor exterior area too. The Oyster Bar and Grafton Marina are across the parking lot to the south in the downtown area. Four and Five short city blocks away you will find the park, O-Jan's Fish Stand, Aeries Zipline, the Sky Lift, Uncle Andy's, Knotty By Nature, City Hall, Police Station, Gas Station, Ice Cream Shop and several gift and novelty shops, antique shops and other restaurants. The other direction a few blocks, to the west, find Drifters and Beasley's Fish Market. Street parking is available right in front of the Spring Manor, there is also a gravel public parking lot just across the street for additional parking. We offer guest free Wifi, Tea, Hot chocolate, and the best coffee bar in town!

Nestled atop a scenic hill and surrounded by mature trees, Rafton Inn 3 offers a peaceful feel, with views of the river and walking distance to the lively main street. You'll have full access to the home, providing plenty of space for comfort and relaxation.

- Upstairs: 3 cozy bedrooms all with queen beds, a full bath, a fully equipped kitchen, and a welcoming living room, outdoor deck has a BBQ grill and outdoor seating. (Could sleep 6)

- Downstairs: 2 additional bedrooms with queen beds, a pullout bed in the living room, a second kitchen, another full bath, and a living area, BBQ grill, and patio dining. (Could sleep 6)

Located in the heart of Grafton within walking distance to restaurants, bars, wineries, marina, and the bike trail located right behind the house. Great getaway to enjoy the great views of the Mississippi River.

The space
The house is 3 levels with a 2 car garage. The first level is for entertainment with a bar, pool table, and big screen TV. The hot tub is located outside of the bar area overlooking the river. The second level is a beautiful kitchen, family room with big screen TV, dining area, master bedroom, master bathroom, and the suspended back deck overlooking the river along with a gas grill for grilling out with friends. The third level is 3 bedrooms, entertainment area, bathroom, and a roll out bed/couch.

You have access to the entire house however the back deck joins with the neighbors back deck and we ask to please be courteous to the family next door.
The master bedroom storage closet is also locked for owners personal items.

Other things to note
The yard to the west next to the house is not owned by the host so we would appreciate if everyone would be kind and stay off that property. They have plenty of public parking next to the house if the garage and driveway get filled up.
