The Peace Barn is a cozy retreat close to art and culture and parks. You’ll love the place because of the outdoor space and the comfy beds. My place is good for families, couples, and furry friends.

The Peace Barn is a rustic venue sitting on 15 acres of private land which can be used for group retreats, reunions, music festivals, weddings, film making, and camping. An outdoor 16x16 stage with seating for up to 150 is located on the property, making it perfect for entertainment, ceremonies, and more. There is a studio next to the house available for yoga, pilates, meditation and other group activities. The stage and studio are available for rental separately.

The tree deck (for ceremonies, performances, etc.) and Studio (for yoga classes, meditation, group classes, etc.) are available for an extra fee. Parking is available for up to 40 cars in rear lot. Please inquire.

My co-host offers amenities and services that you will love. They can answer any questions you have about the accommodations, make reservations for you, stock the fridge, and coordinate group functions.

All areas of the Peace Barn are available except the back room, the glass blowing hut, and an RV that is used by the owner. Outside, there is 3/4 mile of hiking trails, camping area, a gazebo with hammock, a large open field, a meditation spot by the lake, and plenty of space for large tents.

The owner lives on property most of the time in a separate and secured area of the house. When guests stay, they would be in an RV a few hundred yards away, but a storm caused damage to the RV and they need to temporarily use the separate area. The property manager is available to answer any pre-arrival questions, check you in, deliver any amenities you might need, or handle any problems that may arise. This information is in your packet.

Deep River and the surrounding communities have just about everything you could want for virtually any taste. If a big city vibe is what you re after, Boston and New York City are only 2 hours away, making our place an ideal home base for foreign travelers. Our co-host has a huge list of places and things to do, literally a personal concierge while you re staying here. They are experts in the CT River Valley area and can reach out to you once you book to find out what kinds of things you like to do. And if you are not coming by car, we can pick you up at the train station in Westbrook or Old Saybrook.

In the winter, there is a lovely sauna off the master bedroom that you can use. We will have a small pile of wood you can use for the wood burning stove. We can furnish XC skis, ice skates, or snow shoes upon request.

We should mention, please bring your own WIFI hotspot if you would like WIFI. We have good coverage with Verizon.

- "Overall rating is 5: Location; friendliness, helpfulness and availability of host; peacefullness of location; dog-friendly; multiple bedrooms and large dining table; near restuarants, hiking/walks, Gilette Castle, Hammonasset Beach State Park; and more. There are stairs to get to all bedrooms, larger common area and to the smailler common area.. There are also stairs (but just maybe 5-6) from the entry way up to the kitchen/dining area. Spiral stairs lead up to 3 bedrooms (plus full bathroom) on the topmost level). Middle level has two bedrooms (with a full bathroom off the large ("Master") bedroom; lowest level (smaller common area has sofa that one person could sleep on. There is a half bath adjacent to the Kitchen. We gave the hosts 4 stars for communication and check-in process, because of some issues getting ahold of them on the day of check-in and VRBO had 4 pm as check-in time but host said it was 5 pm. Glitch but definitely not a major ding and we would recommend this unique and beautiful location for a short or longer stay."

The inside of the home certainly didn't disappoint. The layout is great for gatherings. The different rooms make it easy to get away for smaller conversations. From the beginning, communication was excellent and Patricia answered all of our many questions about the house and the area. This was the perfect spot for myself, my husband, our two young kids (ages 8 and 11) and our dogs. The beds were the most comfortable I and my family had ever experienced, the bathrooms were super clean (which is huge for me) and the entire house was just adorable. We really enjoyed family nights in the huge TV room and really appreciated that it was separate from another living area space so that we could have adult conversation in one room while our kids enjoyed watching TV in the other. The pool was amazing! It was the perfect size and our youngest actually learned how to dive on this trip. Our kids loved the smart fridge and the fact that you could play music, look up stuff, and even "draw" on the whiteboard. It was super easy to do our laundry whenever needed and the kids loved having their own tv in their very cozy bedrooms. The area is spectacular and being in such a private location was a plus. No noisy neighbors or anything like that and it was truly a serene spot to be in. Saybrook is near and dear to me and I was so looking forward to bringing my family to the area- Having this house was the perfect touch and we are already excited to come back next year. The space
This is a cozy but comfortable space with many rooms having original wide plank pine floors.

The dining area has a small table set up for
two guests but can be pulled out and set for four people.

The living room has two love seats, coffee table and TV above the fireplace. Note that the fireplace is nonfunctional at this time. There are also plenty of books and games to enjoy. The windows in the living room have top down/bottom up shades allowing for both privacy and light.

The kitchen is well equipped and we are adding things all the time! It has a brand new electric stove, refrigerator, microwave, Keurig coffee maker, variety of k-cup coffee and tea, non-dairy creamer, French press, pots and pans, cooking utensils, wine glasses…etc. We have it stocked with paper towels, cleaning supplies, napkins, salt, pepper, sugar, and olive oil. If you need something and you can’t find it just ask! Please note that there is no dishwasher.

In the basement of this 1837 colonial we do have a washer and dryer that you can use. If you prefer there are several local laundromats.

The bathroom has just been completely remodeled and has a nice shower with tile walls and a pedestal sink. We do provide towels, hair dryer, soap, shampoo and conditioner.

The master bedroom has a comfortable queen size bed, luxurious bamboo sheets, blanket, comforter, plenty of pillows and
blackout shades. You will also find a good size bureau, closet, ironing
board, iron and two robes to enjoy!

The second bedroom has a daybed and pull out trundle, luxurious sheets, pillows and blankets. You will also find a desk in this room making it a perfect office for a summer away from the city. It also has blackout shades.

The large outdoor stone patio has a comfortable seating and dining area that looks out over the large lawn and small river. Part of the patio is shaded by a beautiful pergola covered in Wisteria. You have a gas grill and a large storage box to keep the patio cushions dry.

Down by the river you will find a wood burning fire pit and picnic table.

We are a pet friendly rental for those with dogs that are well behaved and comfortable traveling.

We have two dogs and live in the unit next door. We do our best to keep them quite while guests are occupying the property but you may be able to hear occasional barking.

Please be aware that we are in a village setting located on North Main Street and the house is set close to the road. You can hear traffic but the speed limit is 25 mph and it does get very quiet at night.

We are here to answer any questions so feel free to reach out.

You will have access to the whole guest house, patio and large yard. We are on almost 2 acres and have a small river in our backyard. There is also a fire pit down by the river. Our two resident dogs have access to most of the property but there is an area of the yard along with the guest parking area and the guest house that they cannot access.

If you are bringing your pet you must keep them on a leash at all times and keep them in the designated guest areas for the safety of our dogs and yours.

If you want to explore the property but aren’t comfortable with dogs please let us know and we will try to arrange dog free time.

This tastefully refurbished home has brought all its 1820’s charm into to the 21st century. Built-in bookcases, hand carved banisters and beautiful wood floors throughout, exceptional craftsmanship is evident everywhere you look. Pure New England charm.

The updated kitchen boasts original wood cabinets and is located at the back of the house, perfect for making lunch to take out to the back patio or preparing memorable dinners for the adjacent dining room. One half-bath downstairs.

The space
Guests stay in our little renovated freestanding boathouse. Its new kitchen & bath, low-key nautical decor, personal touches and fully thought through details/amenities make this a very special and upscale accommodation.

Location: Just off the beaten path. Down an elegant cobbled lane, behind a thick hedgerow sits an idyllic retreat with unobstructed waterfront views and great vibes.

First floor: Modern kitchen and comfortable living space. A wall of windows & covered outdoor deck with cushioned teak seating & a cocktail table have our visitors telling us they feel like they’re staying aboard a spacious yacht.

Kitchen is clean. Uncluttered, yet well-equipped. Everything you need is provided.

Upstairs: Second floor has the queen size bedroom and only bathroom. Custom upholstery, art, and antique accent furniture create the perfect place to lounge late in bed on crisp cotton linens, or read your book enjoying the vista outside from the large chair.

The small but updated bathroom with its glass door/tiled shower & pedestal sink is also located upstairs. (Plenty of extra towels, hairdryer and soap/shampoo can be provided.)

The Privateer's Boathouse is a thoroughly comfortable residence for a couple's visit. However, if traveling for just a few nights you can REQUEST our “double height” airbed to accommodate a child or to create a separate sleeping arrangement for another adult. If available, we will bring it to the Boathouse and before you arrive.




* Thank you for considering that using an additional bed is something extra our housekeepers must prepare, and clean up. Thus: we will ask for an additional "linen fee" of $25.

Guests have exclusive use the two-story, one-bedroom Boathouse during their stay.

The Boathouse has incredible views, a fabulous & private in-town location, and its own private deck with curtains that billow in the ever-present summer breezes. There is also a lower patio that is exclusively for guests' use. Other outdoor amenities may be shared with host, so please ask.

• If arriving by water, we can help you plan for your stay.

(3) Use of the property, especially the swimming pool, assumes you agree to all risks.
• Persons outside those in your reservation cannot swim.

The Accommodation:
•. This is a small, private cottage.
• It is a separate dwelling, on a shared property.
•. On-site parking is included (one car, in a designated space out front)
+ Supplemental parking is at the end of the Lane, or, you can ask us where to put a second car. (We usually accommodate it without hesitation.)

Outdoors:
• Views, views, views (waterfront, seasonal boat action, birds, wildlife, etc.)
• Private deck with unobstructed waterfront views.
• Use of waterfront is tidal and therefore limited, just ask, we can explain.
• There is a "lounge area" (not pictured) that provides a private place to sit on the Cove.
• There is a completely private patio under the deck off the house, next to swimming pool that is also exclusively for guests-use. (Ideal for yoga.)
• Swimming pool is set into terraced gardens between the Boathouse and the Host's home. It is semi-private.
• There are poolside loungers, an outdoor dining table and many umbrellas to make a "pool day" comfortable.
• Please discuss swimming in advance. We will provide you with pool towels, and explain the situation (which changes based on season and weather). For example, sometimes the pool has a cover on it.

The space
Welcome to the Gamaliel Conklin house, one of Essex's truly admired historic homes. This home has been lovingly restored, renovated, and updated with meticulous attention to period detail and design yet perfectly matched for today's modern life. It's a stunning village 'gem' with peaceful views of Middle Cove. Surround yourself with this gracious and elegant home's warmth, charm, and character. This stately home has every modern amenity, exquisite grounds, perennial gardens, and sweeping lawns. The dream kitchen is a chef's delight and includes state-of-the-art appliances: Wolf, Sub-Zero, Asko, Bosch, dual dishwashers, and double wall ovens. You'll find marble countertops, a grand island, wide board floors, a sun-filled sitting room, and a cozy yet large living room that opens to a music room with a piano and other instruments ready to be played. This home can be customized for the guests, and a nursery set-up is available if helpful. There are also four kayaks and several bikes ready for use, lawn games, beach chairs, an outdoor trampoline, a fire pit, and everything else you need to make this the vacation of a lifetime.

Other things to note
The house is perfectly located in the middle of Main Street. You can walk to everything, but you'll want to rent a car to take beach trips to Hammonasset Beach State Park, just 11 miles away, and visit sites like Gillette Castle State Park. We are happy to provide a list of fun things to do in the area, including hiking maps, parks, playgrounds, and children's summer camps.
It's also good to note that the first-floor king bedroom's closet is located in the front hallway, and the second-floor queen bedroom's closet is very small. However, the other bedrooms have plenty of space, and the master bedroom has a large closet with room to spare.
Housekeeping can come once a week for an extra fee.
Someone can assist with laundry, grocery shopping, etc., up to twice weekly for an extra fee.
