Very quiet and relaxing with the Yuba River right there. Staff were extremely nice. Our dogs our now depressed we came home. Pretty sure they thought it was our new home. Though the Wi-Fi did work outside on the patio, it did not work in the cabin and our DVD player did not play and the front door would lock, but could be pushed open. Whether you enjoy outdoor activities or just want to relax on our deck overlooking the river, you will love this place. Hike the trails nearby, swim, kayak, and picnic at one of many beautiful mountain lakes, gaze at the Sierra Buttes, fish and enjoy the local swimming holes on the Yuba River, or just relax with a view of the river and the Tahoe National Forest. Perfect for a family vacation or group of friends. Great for tele-commuting with a view -- if your boss will let you!
During winter it's a great location to avoid the crowds of the Tahoe area and is great for cross country skiing, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, or sledding with the family. Or just relax by the cozy fire. Borrow our snowshoes and poles or our sled and have some fun.
Enjoy time on the riverside deck, fish on the river below, and sleep to the relaxing sound of the river. Enjoy the restaurants in the picturesque mining town of Sierra City or Downieville or buy groceries at the local Country Store and cook or barbecue at the cabin. Ride your bikes around town, ride the single tracks on your mountain bike, or ride your road bike up Gold Lake Road along many gorgeous lakes.
New: Electric Vehicle charging available if arranged in advance.
Check out our low weekly pricing - may be better to spend a week - there is lots of see and do in the area. Telecommute from the cabin for a few days while the rest of your family enjoys a longer vacation.
There are two bedrooms and two full bathrooms. One king bed, one queen bed, and a queen size air mattress that can go in either room or the living room. One bathroom has a shower, the other has a bathtub with a shower head. The second bedroom has a private entrance to the hall bathroom. There is access to the entire house, except the garage. Living space is about 1200 square feet.
The TV is an old 35 inch model but it is set up with a ROKU box and both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video subscriptions so you can enjoy great movies, TV shows, news, weather, and music. Although there is no cable TV, most broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, ESPN, etc.) have apps on the ROKU so you can watch those networks live if you have a cable subscription at home. Plug your music player to the stereo system (bring adaptor if required). VHS, CD, and Cassette players are also available.
You are welcome to use the gas barbecue on the back deck facing the river and the washer and dryer in the hall bath. Connect your phones and laptops to our WiFi network for fast internet connectivity.
You may borrow our kayak to enjoy on the lakes nearby (not the river). Fits two adults and a child or dog. Please arrange for kayak ahead of time if interested.
Guests have access to the whole cabin, except the garage.

Notes
For holidays or weekends from June to October we have a 3 night minimum (except with short notice if the dates are still available or if only 2 nights are available on the calendar)
In cases where we have another guest checking in or out on the same day, I need to check our housekeeper's schedule before confirming your reservation request. If our housekeeper's schedule requires a later check-in time or earlier checkout time, I will check with you before confirming your booking. Sorry for this inconvenience. On the positive side, we often have flexible checkin/checkout times if our housekeeper's schedule allows it.
Note: During busy times of the year, if you check in or check out on a Sunday, we may require checkout by 11 am or check in at 6 pm due to availability of the cleaner.
The cabin, including its decor, is from the 60s. Most of our guests appreciate the "vintage" look. Just note it's not a modern home and it is rustic. We have formica and linoleum. We don't have a dishwasher or a garbage disposal. Also, our heaters sometimes make noise when they expand and contract (but we have electric heaters as back up if that bothers you).
There is no big grocery store nearby. It's part of the appeal of the small town. We recommend you shop for groceries at home or on the way up in Auburn, Grass Valley, or Marysville.
If you are coming for snow in the winter please check the weather and snow levels or ask Francisco ahead of time. We sometimes don't have snow at cabin level - depending on the weather and time of the year but you can usually find snow a short drive away. The cabin is at 4200 Feet. Bassetts Station and Gold Lake Road (5500 feet) are 5 miles away and the Yuba Pass SNO Park (6700 feet) is 11 miles away.
- "We are looking forward to book your house again" - "Perfect place to stay. Right close to the Sierra Buttes. Great mountain biking, fishing and hiking. Our Sierra City Retreat is ~ 1900 square feet of cozy living space. With 2 separate living areas, and room to sleep 6, there is space for everyone. Our cabin is located on a quiet street in a wooded park like setting. You are walking distance to the Pacific Crest Trail and the river, ~ 1.5 miles to town. Its central location and higher elevation make it a popular rental year round
Sierra City lies along the North Yuba River at about 4,500 feet in the shadow of the 9,000 foot Sierra Buttes. It's proximity to the Lakes Basin (45 alpine lakes within 15 miles) and Yuba Pass (7,250 feet) make it a favorite for outdoor enthusiasts wanting to get away. Fishing, hiking, swimming and mountain biking (~12 miles from infamous “Downieville Downhill”) are all very popular in the summer as well as cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling in the winter. The nearest alpine skiing is located in Truckee ~ 46 miles from our cabin.
**PLEASE NOTE: This home has (2) security cameras installed. One that is pointed towards the front and street. The 2nd is installed on the back of the home, pointing towards the back/shed.

- "Comfortable home. It was clean and cozy. It was a little hot at night in the upstairs bedrooms, so more fans would have been helpful. There were ceiling fans in most of the rooms, which helped keep those rooms cool. The location was perfect for getting on the road to our hike and the concert at Kentucky Mine." - "We stayed here for 3 nights for our Sons wedding. Erin was wonderful before we came in answering all of our questions. The house is a perfect location and easy to get to. Beds were very comfortable and has a very homey feeling. I recommend this place very highly and next time we go to Sierra City I will be asking Erin to rent their beautiful home again. We only had 1 problem the land line did not work we tried to call the house our son rent and he tried to call us so we called each other through instant messenger with wifi it worked perfect. Thank you for everything Erin hope to be back soon"

Relax in gorgeous great room with a wood-burning stove, hang out on two decks-- one with views of the Sierra Butte's sneaking through the trees. The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is a ten-minute walk from the cabin, as is the bridge over the confluence of Haypress and Yuba rivers on Wild Plum Road. Sardine/Salmon lakes and the lakes basin is just a ten-minute drive with endless hiking possibilities. The wireless internet is fast enough to stream movies on our projector or to have zoom meetings if you are working from the cabin. This would be a good writing retreat. A couple of important notes: To access the upstairs you should be comfortable navigating the spiral staircase (in photos). The great room, main bedroom, kitchen and bathroom are all downstairs so it's not necessary to get upstairs if that is an issue for one or more guests. Second, as seen in the photos, the upstairs has a queen and two twin beds, but there are no doors; so there is not the same level of privacy you have with the downstairs bedroom. In the winter you should also be comfortable working a wood-burning stove (which is simple to operate). We are ok with a well behaved dog.
- "We stayed at this house for our winter vacation for few days. The location was very nice, beautiful and quiet neighborhood. The house was very spacious and had everything we needed. Perfect place for family vacation in nature :)" - "The perfect mountain getaway!" - "The house was perfect for our mtn. Bike weekend! Right in between downieville and the Sierra buttes. It was very comfortable and just as described !" - "My friend and I stayed here while we were mountain biking in the area. The cabin was clean and perfectly located in between everything. Recommend staying here to anyone!"

The beautiful cottage has been recently remodeled and boasts a fully equipped kitchen for some home cooked meals. It has a large shower with great hot and cold-water pressure. Perfect for after a long day at the lake or on the trails. If you feel like grilling, we've got you covered with a Webber charcoal grill for a nice steak, burger or even a S'more. Relax on the wraparound deck and just enjoy the tranquility this area has to offer. This cottage is perfect for 2 but can accommodate 4. Did I mention we are pet friendly? So, feel free to bring your furry, 4-legged child.
This cottage is in the historic, gold rush town of La Porte, CA. La Porte is surrounded by the beautiful Plumas National Forest in the Sierras. If you have been here before, you know how great this place is. Some of the best features include the Little Grass Valley Reservoir, OHV roads/trails, hiking trails and snowmobiles. If this is your first time, we promise it won't be your last. This is the perfect hub to experience La Porte and its surrounding areas.
- "Middle of nowhere. Quiet. Perfect spot to get away, had everything you need" - "Sweet small cabin with everything you'd need AND pet friendly! Loved sitting on the wrap-around deck! Lots of nice windows and ceiling fan, perfect for warmer days and nights. Only change we'd make is change out the Kerig for a regular coffee maker. Kerig's produce too much waste! Although we own property in LaPorte, we decided to check out an "in-town" cabin. It was a great experience. Thanks so much! Lanette, Julee, Rusty, Dag and Penny"

Perfect for a family reunion or a big group of people that want to be together and enjoy cooking, bbq'ing and hanging out after a long hike or an incredible downhill mountain bike ride. - "Had a great time at this Vrbo, the space was large and welcoming. We were riding bikes while in town and the garage was super helpful for storage. The deck was an amazing hang out spot!" - "Set up perfect for family and children. Perfect location. We will return" - "My friends and I enjoyed spending the weekend hanging out the cabin and nearby in the river. This cabin is a great rental!" - "I enjoyed my stay at this property. Its the first time I have used VRBO and the whole process and property has been great. Comms with the owner was easy and responsive. The views from the deck were great. The house was roomy and there was enough "home goods" for cooking and storing the food. We cooked a lot in the kitchen and there was enough basic kitchen goods to allow us to serve our rather large group of people. The driveway was a bit steep for some of the folks (as in, they had challenges driving up it) but it is fine for a confident driver. The walk into town and the river was easy. The neighbors have a bit too much junk in their yard, but all-in-all, a nice location where I felt safe with my family. If I was needing a large space in Downieville again, I would stay here."

Amazing ambiance!
This charming house is just a couple blocks from downtown in the small Gold Rush village of Sierra City.
The house is cozy and private. But its greatest attraction is the peaceful sound of a small brook cascading past the deck and water trickling down the rock patio wall.
This house has three bedrooms, with one California King bed and the other two queen beds. This two-story house has one full bath (shower only) and one half bath, one on each level.
The stairs leading to the two upstairs bedrooms are fairly steep and may be difficult to navigate for people with disabilities.
Hardwood deck looks out over a small year-round stream that provides great sounds!
Usually requires a 3-4-day minimum rental. Requests for shorter stays may be considered in between other rentals or for open days close to booking window. There is one security doorbell camera.
- "Nice spacious digs with great creek music." - "If you like a cabin in the woods, you will like this place. We had trouble finding it because of an obscure address sign. I talked to the owner, and he is putting up an easier to spot sign. Some windows could use light-blocking curtains. It was bright in the upstairs bedroom at 5:30 AM. The owner agrees with me and hopefully will add curtains. Other than this minor issues, the place was comfortable. Meals were easy to prepare in the kitchen. I would rent it again for a family."

- "My family and I were wowed by the sheer size of the property. The rooms were well accommodated, bathrooms clean and stocked with fresh linens and soaps. The kitchen has everything you need to cook big meals. We primarily used the gas propane grill for its ease of use. There is a very large charcoal grill if you feel the need to throw on 8 rack of ribs! The ice machine in the bar came in clutch when we took a trip to the lake near by (less than 10min drive). The parking lot is an easy short walk down to the lake. We spent most of the time on the bottom floor, cooking and catching up with distant relatives. Remember to post a sign outside the doors so strangers do not walk in. =) The grassy yard area is where 3 epic rounds of dodge ball went down. That was a highlight for sure. We were able to take some memorable family photos on the deck also! There is so much I can go on and on about this place that probably has been covered by others. This hotel fit the bill for any large gatherings, reunions & weddings. The only thing that needs improving is the WiFi connection is not that good. They are looking into improving this! Steve and Angela were great hosts, they were prompt and accommodating. Overall my family had a wonderful time and cannot wait for another reunion. (35 adults + 15 kids) We will keep the Union Hotel in mind for our future reunions or possibly weddings!"

- "We rented multiple cabins for a business retreat. There is no better place to detach from the office to focus on team dynamics and collaboration. The cabins are situated in a stunning forest, which adds a sense of peace and calm to the dynamics. Thanks for the hospitality!" - "Adam was very communicative and helpful as we navigated an attempt to get to the cabin in the midst of the Big Storm of December 2021! He made sure we were prepared for the trip and ultimately had to let us know the conditions had left the roads unsafe. We'll try again!"

- "We had a wonderful stay at the Wisdom Retreat. It was exactly what we were looking for: a remote cabin in a beautiful forest where we could escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Adam was a great host. He quickly responded to messages and stay made sure we were comfortable during our stay (and he's fun to talk to!). For three days we replaced our TV with a fireplace and loved every minute of it. We saw two bears on our way in which was really cool. There are some great walks you can do without leaving the property. When we went in late November, there was snow on the ground in places (needed good, warm boots). The Yuba River is a short drive. We went to Malakoff Diggins State Park which has some great hikes as well. Things to know: This rental is for people who enjoy being close to nature. The cabin is very rustic and has limited amenities. There was no hot water and the nearest bathroom is a composting outhouse (hot water may be available in the future). There is a flushing toilet and hot shower available at the main house. So why the price? The beautiful, remote, private location makes it worth it. I also appreciate the difficulties and expenses associated with running a remote off-grid property. In my experience, being closer to nature means giving up some modern conveniences. Also note: Firewood for the cabin is included. Firewood for outdoor fires is an additional cost (at the time of this writing). So if you're looking for a remote, beautiful place to unplug, and you appreciate the simplicity of a rustic (limited amenities) cabin, this place is great. My son and I made some great memories here."

Newly renovated Victorian cottage, set in the heart of Downieville. Nestled between 2 rivers, the cottage offers a relaxing retreat. Swim, bike, fish, walk or simply watch the world go by in this Sierra goldmine town, surrounded by nature.
The space
Our family loves our cottage. In the winter there's nothing like snuggling up and sitting around the fire playing board games. In the summer it's all about the outdoors. Sit on the porch and watch the world go by, explore the Sierra's all around you, or be adventurous and try out the famous downhill mountain bike rides.
Other things to note
The cottage backs onto the hill and has a large garden extending up the mountain. There's a very small pond on the hill so watch out if you have very young kids.
The garden is terraced with dry stone walls all the way back and offers great views and walks straight up the hill. Tread with caution as the hill is steep.
- "We had an excellent stay in Downieville thanks to the hospitality and friendliness of our host. The house was clean, comfortable and easy to find. The host was super easy to contact and friendly. Would absolutely rent this house again and recommend it!" - "Just what we expected Great experience" - "Good hikes, plenty of room." - "Our group of 7 had a fantastic stay in this cottage. We also had a 2 more drop in for drinks/dinner after the ride. Parking was easy, air conditioning was quite useful one day, kitchen is huge and big dining table for a large group. The place was clean and charming. It's just across the bridge from town so an easy walk but you don't hear any noise. Also a very short stroll to jump in the river. We would definitely rent again."

This is a one of kind VRBO listing featuring a stunning luxury cabin, a cozy bunkhouse, and a very unique "tree house"-like sleeping quarters where you can fully enjoy the beautiful outdoor space this property has to offer.
Surrounded by the fascinating Plumas National Forest, La Porte offers access to various activities like boating, swimming or fishing at the Little Grass Valley Reservoir, OHV roads/trails, hiking trails and snowmobiling. Or simply enjoy your time in this little piece of paradise.
- "This property was an absolute gem for my large family to have as headquarters and eating place for my wedding! The ample and interesting yard space was wonderful for the kids to run around, the kitchen provided room to food prep for a small army, and the house combined with location couldn't have been more relaxing and beautiful! Everything was beautifully clean and welcoming on our arrival. La Porte is a sweet and sleepy little town, and Little Grass Valley Reservoir is gorgeous, with some neat little beaches and a few fantastic campgrounds!"

Just a few minute walk to town! End of the road backed by national land, this studio space is surrounded by panoramic views of the mountains, river and town of Downieville.
The space itself includes everything you need!
Kitchenette, full bathroom with shower, memory foam bed, TV and high speed wifi.
- "Very quiet studio with a super comfortable bed! " - "We would definitely stay here again! The steep drive up to the property was a little crazy but once we got to the top and realized how secluded we were it was great. It was so hot in Downieville but the temperature of the room was always comfortable. The bed was very comfortable, the room was clean and the set up was cute. The plumbing, mainly the toilet was a very slow flusher, but other than that it was a very enjoyable stay. "

Step back in time at the Lost Sierra Bungalow, a cozy riverside retreat built in the 1960s using reclaimed timbers from 1800s Sierra Valley barns. Nestled where the Yuba River meets Haypress Creek, this peaceful hideaway opens to the sound of rushing water and birdsong.
Whether you’re sipping coffee on the deck, cooking a meal with friends, or stargazing under string lights, this cabin invites you to slow down and reconnect with nature.
The heart of the cabin is the spacious great room — perfect for curling up by the wood-burning stove, playing games, dancing, or gathering for shared meals.
The country kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to cook: a four-burner stove, fridge, coffee maker, pots, pans, dishes, utensils, spices, oils, and more. Step out to the large deck with BBQ grill and outdoor dining area — magical at dusk under the twinkle lights and stars.
Sleeping arrangements:
Downstairs: 1 queen bedroom + 1 bathroom (clawfoot tub & shower)
Upstairs: 3 bedrooms (1 queen, 1 full, 1 twin room for kids) + 1 bathroom
Year-round adventure:
Spring–Fall: Hiking & biking trails for all levels, Yuba River fishing & swimming nearby.
Winter: Borrow our sleds and explore by snowshoe, ski, or snowmobile.
Connectivity: No TV, but great Wi-Fi — stream, work remotely, or unplug and enjoy the quiet.
What makes it special:
This is a true Lost Sierra retreat — cozy, rustic, and deeply relaxing. The perfect mix of nature, comfort, and nostalgia. Watch the light move through the pines, listen to the creek, and reconnect with what matters.
Guests have full access to the home and plenty of parking for cars, bikes, and even snowmobiles in winter. The bungalow is all yours — a private, peaceful mountain retreat.
Our cabin is old-fashioned and full of charm — the upstairs can be chilly in winter and warm in summer. We provide extra blankets for cool nights, and suggest opening windows after sunset during summer to let in the mountain air.
Please treat our home and the surrounding land with care. A light tidy-up (dishes, vacuuming if needed) helps us keep this place special for years to come. No need to do laundry or take out ashes — we’ll handle that.
This is a true Lost Sierra experience: cozy, rustic, and rooted in nature.
- "House was terrific. One of my children and her family were not able to come due to an illness but my son stayed. Rustic yet comfortable. A very pleasant stay." - "Great place to hang around with people you care about. Not fancy, but cozy in a delightfully quirky way. Functional kitchen (no dishwasher ), close to wonderful hikes. " - "It was a brisk fall weekend, perfect for a nice fire, cards and a good book. The colors all around were amazing and the cozy home was just as pictured. "

- "We had a lovely stay in the Yuba apartment! Communication with Jen was always spot on and she recommended the most magical swimming spot on the river right in Downieville. We would all definitely stay there again." - "Recently remodeled unit with deck over Main St. in Downieville. Watch all the tourists and locals walk, ride, site up and down. New appliances , lighting etc... 1st time ever using VRBO. Would rent again!" - "Very sleek private one-bedroom apartment located on the second floor in the old historic hotel building on Main St. Easy self entry and exit, felt very COVID safe. Apartment has very nice finishes - one of the nicest “Airbnb”s that we’ve stayed in. We especially enjoyed sitting in the rocking chairs on the balcony just above Main St, where we could watch the mountain bikers gathering, families walking by en route to float or fish, and everyone generally having a good time. Back in the bedroom it was quiet enough to get a good night’s sleep. Full kitchen enabled us to make our own meals. Great stay."

The Butte Bungalow is in "downtown" Sierra City a historic gold rush town. It is the perfect spot to enjoy a nice long (31 days or more) retreat from every day life! Our quiet community sits on the North Yuba River at the base of the Sierra Buttes. We are a 10 minute drive to the unparalleled Lakes Basin recreation area and an hour from world class downhill skiing in Truckee.
Our cozy cabin is a great space for a family. With a queen bedroom, a bunk room (double over twin) and a large loft with queen bed, 6 people can sleep with privacy and comfort.
The main living space consists of a fully stocked open kitchen, a wood stove, multiple storage cabinets, as well as a super cozy seating area to lounge after a day frolicking in the mountains. A library ladder can be used to access the large loft bedroom. There is a single bathroom with a shower and washer/dryer. The entryway is spacious and there's plenty of room for hanging coats and leaving shoes.
In addition, there is the possibility of using the private cottage just off the back deck which has a desk for working remotely and a queen bed. Please ask specifically if you are interested in using the cottage.
Our large yard accommodates a fire pit, hammock and slack line as well as a BBQ and outdoor dining table for seasonal use.
Important note about cleaning:
I hate confronting people about this or charging fees, but it seems I have to be explicit. We do not charge a cleaning fee and we do not have a house cleaner. Part of renting our cabin is the expectation that the cabin to be returned to the condition that it was in when you arrived.
This is our family cabin. We share it with the guests who are coming to stay for longer periods of time as a temporary home. We generally come up in between guests to make sure things look good. Depending on the season it can be hard to resupply everything during a short weekend trip for us. Get the next guest started so they don’t have to run out on day one to buy toilet paper or salt or laundry detergent. This is not a short term vacation rental where we have a staff house cleaner coming in multiple times a week to restock and clean.
We have had a problem with people hiring local house cleaners and not checking their work. House cleaners have left the doors open, left cleaning supplies scattered around the house, left unfolded towels in a pile etc. The house cleaners are not familiar with our place and need explicit instructions.
If you rent our place you are agreeing to clean thoroughly, restock essentials and leave everything put away basically the way that you found it. Use common sense and decency. Get the next guest started and leave it the way you would want to find it if you were arriving for a vacation.
Electricity
The cabin has a remote controlled Mini-Split that provides heat and air-conditioning. There is AT&T Internet 18 Mbps, which has been sufficient for our family to work remotely, stream movies, conduct meetings on zoom, and communicate reliably. The adjacent cottage/office has a computer screen, keyboard and mouse for you to use with a laptop.
Part of living in our remote location, means very occasional PG&E blips. Obviously when the power is out, the internet and temperature control is out. That being said, we have spent weeks at a time at the cabin and have not experienced a power outage. It is most likely in the middle of winter, or during high fire season in late summer although it usually is a short outage. In the winter, the wood stove provides enough heat so you will stay warm without an electric heater.
Groceries
Feel free to use the address for the Sierra City General Store (213 Main Street, Sierra City, CA 96125) search relevant distances for your familiar needs. Check out their webpage for a live webcam of the town! We are a 1 minute walk from main street.
For a month stay at our cabin I recommend a big shop at your favorite store and Costco for as much as you can before you go.
- Sierra City General Store has very basic provisions mostly aimed at backpackers.
- Downieville (15 mins away) has a market that has recently opened with a better selection of food (but not your big grocery shopping.)
- For weekly fresh provisions, the closest best market, with organics, deli, butcher, produce is The Graegle Store 30 min away or the Feather River Food Coop in Portola 45 min away.
- Bigger supermarkets (Raley's, Safeway, Grocery Outlet) are just over an hour away in Truckee, Nevada City/Grass Valley or Quincy.
- Reno is 1.5 hours and you'll find all the big stores there.
