Convenience meets relaxation and historic charm! This adorable vacation rental allows guests the choice of cooking their own meal in a fully stocked kitchen, or simply walking to any of the wonderful local restaurants to experience a variety of delicious cuisines.

This unit is an apartment, within a historic home, which hosts two other long-term tenants. After entering a shared foyer and going up a set of curved stairs, guests will have their own dedicated space completely. The only other shared area is the basement laundry room. The apartment itself (bedrooms, kitchen, living areas, etc) is yours completely and is not shared with anyone outside of your group. Keyless entry allows an easy self-check-in, and you will be greeted with a manual of suggestions for local restaurants and fun things to do nearby.

The house itself was built in 1861 and has gone through numerous updates throughout the last 150+ years; the latest update being in 2020.

SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS:
The home sleeps up to 6 people in the following areas:
-Master Bedroom: 2 people (King bed)
-Guest Bedroom: 2 people (Queen bed)
-Living Room: 2 People (fold-out queen 4" foam mattress)

BATHROOMS:
There is one full bathroom (with a tub).

KITCHEN:
The kitchen includes a stainless-steel sink, quartz counter tops, a peninsula with barstool seating for 2, a kitchen table and 4 chairs, fridge and freezer, microwave, dishwasher, toaster, coffee maker, and blender. Dishware and spices/cooking oils are provided, along with coffee, tea, and sweeteners.

DESKS/WORK AREAS:
A desk is available for work; guests would simply need to bring their own computer to plug in. WiFi is provided.

TECHNOLOGY:
--A smart TV is provided with access to Netflix/Hulu, etc.
--Wifi is provided.
--The house has a boiler heating system with radiators throughout. Window AC units are controlled by you. If you do not want to utilize the devices, you can simply turn them off.
--A washer/dryer is available for your use (free) in the basement.

The house is on a boiler system with radiators for heat during the cooler months. There are 3 portable AC window units, for cooling during warmer months, along with 3 portable room fans.

Free street parking is plentiful in front/on the side of the house.

(We do not have outlet blockers, no furniture is strapped to walls, stairs do not have gates, there are no safety locks on cabinets, etc.) Some windows are low to the ground where curious kids could easily get out. Children must be accompanied by adults at all times, and guests are responsible for the safety of their children.
2. The stairs are steep (the house was built in 1861!). Guests must climb a full flight of stairs to get into the unit—Those who are not able bodied will NOT be able to easily navigate the home; although the house was updated in 2020, the age of the house does not render it handicap equipped.

Parking is free but first-come/first-served around downtown. However, guests will be provided a parking pass upon check in allowing 1 vehicle to be parked downtown in any of the 6 designated parking lots (2 of which are only 600’ from the unit). To access this unit, guests will use a shared exterior entrance off Lincolnway. Once inside the building, there will be a keyless entry code to the unit with the code provided the morning of your scheduled arrival. The entire apartment is all yours!

- "I have family in Valpo, but they don’t have a lot of room for guests. With one son on leave from the Navy, space was even tighter. This rental was a perfect compromise! Clean, quiet, but minutes away from everything. Great place to stay!" - "This property is perfect for a longer stay with family. The three bedrooms all have REAL beds- king, queen, & a twin trundle. The closets in each room are a great size. Only the smallest room does not include a dresser. The fact that there are two bathrooms is also amazing! One has a full tub, the other is shower only. Kitchen, dining, living room are large and well equipped, the deck offers a nice grill and a pretty tree view. We enjoyed coffee out there each morning. There is not a sleeper couch, so additional beds are not available, and the couch is a little small. However- there’s a pack-n-go if you have a baby or toddler. Was super helpful to have a washer/dryer in the unit. We did have to wash linens, towels, and some clothes during our stay, so it was great to have. We asked for an iron and ironing board and those arrived next day. There was no hair dryer- so that’s something to consider bringing if you need it. The only thing I would have loved was a full-length mirror. We had an event to attend and it’s nice to be able to check out your entire outfit when you dress. Plus- with multiple people, it’s helpful to have additional mirrors near outlets so people can be getting ready outside of the bathroom, while others are showering. The location was so close to the university- and you could actually walk to downtown Valpo if you wanted to. We drove because it’s a little more of a trek than we wanted to make. Overall, a really perfect spot and a great, attentive host!"

Free street parking is plentiful in front of and on the side of the house, as well as the back driveway. It is best to park in the back driveway as it is closest to the entrance to the garden apartment. Only 1 guest car may park in the back driveway.

- "The inn is beautiful!" - "The only difficulty we encountered was actually finding the place. Unlike most commercial operations, the signage was small and the name of the property was not immediately discernible above the larger name of the restaurant. The stay, though, was outstanding!!" - "Would have liked a hot breakfast, like we've had at other B&Bs. And the fireplace was wonderful with the exception that it wouldn't turn off so we had to leave our balcony door open all night. Other than these two things, the stay was very pleasant."

UNIT PERKS:
--This rental includes TWO upstairs units within the same house. The apartments are on the second floor and are separated by a wall, but under the same roof: a great solution for traveling families who want to travel together with privacy. Each unit has its own living space, dining space, and kitchen with a fridge/freezer, sink, stove, oven, microwave, toaster, blender & coffee maker. Essentials like plates, cups, cookware, utensils, & paper towel will be provided for your use.
--Along with coffee, creamer and sweetener are provided.
--Cooking spray, olive oil, salt/pepper are provided.
--Each unit has its own bathroom. A hair dryer and showering essentials/bath towels are available.
--All bedrooms have some form of dresser storage and hangers for clothing storage. There is also an iron and ironing board in each unit.
--Small beach toys for kids and a large woven beach towel is provided for each guest.
--A few board games are available for your use.
--Free public parking allows guests to park in front of/beside the house with ease.

(We do not have outlet blockers, no furniture is strapped to walls, stairs do not have gates, there are no safety locks on cabinets, etc.) Some windows are low to the ground where curious kids could easily get out. Children must be accompanied by adults at all times, and guests are responsible for the safety of their children.
2. The stairs are steep (the house was built in 1861!). Guests must climb a full flight of stairs to get into the units—Those who are not able bodied will NOT be able to easily navigate the home; although the house was updated in 2020, the age of the house does not render it handicap equipped.

ADDITIONAL INFO:
While I am happy to welcome guests of all backgrounds, I will only be accepting booking requests from:

--AirBnB users who are "verified" and who already have multiple positive reviews from other hosts. (A fully refundable $500 security deposit is required from guests who have no reviews. The $500 is returned once the cleaning crew confirms there are no damages, and the apartments are in good condition.)
--Renters that are above the age of 25.
--Renters who are not bringing pets.
--A maximum of 12 guests per reservation. Extra guests are not allowed.
—I value my relationship with my neighbors and fellow tenants, so events/gathering/parties are not to be held by guests. In order to keep the unit in excellent condition for future guests, I am firm on these rules. I apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

" - "Beautifully maintained landmark home, walkable to the main drag in Valparaiso. Loved walking to a different coffee shop every morning. Lots of nice touches and plenty of space. There was a heat wave while were in town, and the rooms have standalone AC units that do a good job, but they can't really cut the humidity the way central air does. The AC units are loud, but it is a constant sound, like white noise, just FYI. The two units are entirely separate, but their entry doors a just a few yards apart. Would definitely stay here again."

- "My husband and I were not disappointed with our stay here! It looked exactly like the pictures, and the staff were so friendly. We ate breakfast at the Abbey, and the food was amazing. We will definitely be coming back for another stay before the end of the year!" - "Loved the room and cleanliness. We expected the traffic on Route 2 but there was no supervision for the guests drinking yelling and slamming doors. We had to make our own white noise to drown out the racket. When we left in the morning there was a fire extinguisher on the hallway floor and a hole in the wall. We were really looking forward to an evening away from our extremely hectic life. Unfortunately we wouldn’t return or recommend it based on our night time experience. If it helps I know I went out on the porch and saw the people on their porch under us drinking and being loud and disorderly. Be aware that you can hear unruly guests (if they were guests) "

- "All was as advertised, cute b&b in a cute town. We didn’t eat dinner in the restaurant but brunch was great!" - "Went here for a quick weekend getaway with my sister. We had visited the National Park and just needed a place to lay our heads. The place is just so gorgeous and I know the new owners put a lot of work into bringing it up to date. The decor and friendliness of the staff did not disappoint. Rooms were clean and beds were comfy. A few areas for improvement would take this place to a great guest experience: 1) Arrival - we circled the block before realizing where the Inn was and then struggled to park, walked all around the building finding the door, struggled to make it to front desk due to large crowd blocking door waiting at restaurant. While the restaurant is a great addition, please don’t let it detract from your Inn guests. Better Inn signage, reserved parking for Overnight guest, and keeping doorway clear would greatly enhance the arrival process. 2) Room Information Guide - While our room did have a guide the information was not up to date and so it was pretty useless. Spending the time to update the info and bring it to the level of the rest of the place would be very helpful. Most of the stuff is no longer even available since the renovation and new ownership. The menus at The Abbey were gorgeous, so let’s make the room info match and provide a sense of continuity and consistent quality between the two. 3) Accurate amenity description - if there was a workout room, sauna, or pool, I could not find it. Either delete this from the website or provide info to guests. 4) Poor WiFi - this is an easy fix. Install some new technology to bring a stronger signal to your guests. These little details will provide a much better guest experience. You’ve nailed the big things, now take care of those final touches and you’ll have a 5 star review. Looking forward to coming again and seeing these small changes!"

- "Parking situation was a little confusing. Dinner was very nice and staff was very friendly. Room was very clean and cozy. Bed was a little hard, and our room was at top of stairs and over the lounge, so we heard everyone at rhe front desk until 11ish. Would definately stay again but select the edinburgh with a patio to sit outside." - "There was no pool, hot tub, fitness center, sauna, breakfast, library or desserts. Completely false listing of amenities. The jets in hot didn’t work (which was one of the reasons we chose the property). Overall the place was fine, but amenities were completely falsified and the staff was less than helpful with our concerns. We were told we would get a call from property manager the day we left...which never happened."

⚠️ Safety, Accessibility Notes, & House Rules
--Homes are NOT baby-proofed (no outlet covers, no cabinet locks, furniture is not secured to walls, no cribs provided, etc). Guests are responsible for their safety.
--No pets, parties, or events – we value the relationship with our neighbors, and strive to keep the home in top condition.
--Max occupancy: 4 guests
--🚭 No smoking inside or within 50 feet (violations = $300 cleaning fee)
--2 steps to enter; historic home means you may see occasional bugs/spiders despite monthly treatments
--Historic property: steep stairs to second floor; not ideal for those with mobility issues

⏰ Check-In / Check-Out
--Check-In: 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM
--Check-Out: 10:00 AM
--Note: We always try to provide early check-in and late check-out opportunities when possible. (It is simply dependent on whether or not it’s a same day check-in/out, the condition in which the previous guest left the home, and our cleaners’ schedules.) Please notify us if you would like early/late check-in/out, and we will do our best to make it work! 🕚
--Guests will receive key code & detailed check-in instructions via message on the morning of arrival.
--Michigan City operates on Central Standard Time (CST).

🛡️ Booking Requirements
We’re excited to welcome guests from all backgrounds and want to make sure every stay is enjoyable, safe, and comfortable for both you and our neighbors. To help us maintain a great experience, we ask that:
--The primary renter is 25+ with a verified government ID.
--Guests have positive prior reviews, or if not, a fully refundable $500 damage deposit hold will be required. This is an authorization hold only (not a charge) and is released at checkout once our team confirms the home is in good condition.
