The Portage Lion sits on 4 beautifully landscaped acres that was formerly part of a nursery. We're just 15 minutes from the University of Notre Dame and downtown South Bend and 30 minutes to Lake Michigan beaches. This renovated 750 square foot studio apartment sleeps two, is air-conditioned and includes a full kitchen, dining room, living room, and sleeping area with 1 bath. Wifi, Roku enabled TV, hairdryer, kitchenware, toaster and coffee maker are provided with rental. We have lovely mature flora, very large trees, a grotto and architectural hardscape features. Inquire about using the large blue-stone patio at the main house. Wander around and look at the features and check out our large vegetable garden! A very park-like feel. Other outside amenities include parking, swing set, and open spaces to play football, soccer, or just run around. For an additional fee this large apartment can accommodate 1-2 more on a sofa and/or owner supplied elevated full size air mattress.

It was a little complicated to find, but the host's check in email was very thorough so we were able to get there after re-reading through it! There was yogurt and granola, kuerig coffee pods and a lovely loaf of chocolate chip bread in the fridge for us. The kitchen was fully stocked with utensils and the backyard area was really nice. The only negative is that the studio is connected to some kind of garage/storage facility so there was quite a bit of banging noise and loud talking coming through the walls, but that was all during the day and the room was very quiet while we were sleeping. If we're in the area again, we would definitely stay here, but maybe in the cottage as it's separate from the garage units."

- "Rhoda and Tom were wonderful. The cottage was perfect for a short getaway. Many cute features. Loved the farm setting and the animals. Rhoda's flowers were meticulously groomed all over the property along with a thriving garden. Thomas was gracious enough to let us try our hand at milking cows and bottle feeding calves. The location is perfectly nestled amongst beautiful farm land and the sound of horses hooves can be heard daily. We will definitely return again when it's time to unplug and recenter. Fern went the extra mile to be sure there were age appropriate toys, books, two booster seats, and even toddler utensils in the drawer. My kids had a blast! I was also able to cook all meals in the well stocked kitchen. My husband and I are over 6'3" and the basement ceiling did get a little low in spots for us, however we are accustom to this issue. Just and FYI if you are tall. However, if we have to come to Elkhart again, we will plan to stay at the same place - it was that great!"

A LOT Of bugs, especially daddy daddy long legs, So you definitely have to be the outdoorsy type. The hosts were very hospitable and responded timely to any pre-booking questions . Could have used few more outdoor games, maybe corn hole and horseshoes. Overall, a good experience for the money paid."

Studio for one non-smoker. Our usual guest is a busy academic, intern, medical worker or other professional. Located on the second floor of an old 4-unit apartment house, so there is some in-house sound transfer. Our neighborhood is usually quiet, but not always. See the LOCATION section under the map to check if our neighborhood is suitable for you. No smoking indoors or out. Memorial Hospital 3 blocks, Notre Dame 2.5 miles, downtown 1/2 mile. 8 minutes to SB Airport and 80/90 Toll Road.

The space
This is a private studio apartment on the second floor. There is a somewhat steep and narrow indoor staircase to reach the studio. There are 3 other apartments in the big OLD house. This is an OLD, VINTAGE-STYLE studio---if you are looking for modern style, this place won't work for you! We try to keep a quiet house for studying and sleeping. If you play a musical instrument, do workouts that involve jumping around, or have frequent loud phone conversations, this studio is not a good fit for you as sound can travel between the floors/walls of the old house. The studio is for one person, is pet-free and is completely NON-SMOKING inside and out. Host lives next door. You will probably encounter neighborhood cats at some point on the sidewalk or porch.

STUDIO DETAILS: The studio consists of a combined bedroom/living room, a kitchen and a bathroom. There is one full size bed. The kitchen has an electric countertop burner, a vintage sink and a vintage refrigerator, toaster oven, microwave, basic cookware, dishes and utensils, standard coffeemaker, French press, one-cup Melitta pour-over. City tap water is fine to drink, but a Brita pitcher is provided if you would like to filter it. Sheets are 100% cotton. Fragrance-free and non-toxic detergent used on bedding/towels. The studio is pet-free. Wireless internet provided. There is a TV with Roku box so you can log into your apps.

There are a total of four apartments in the big old house. Walls and floors are solid, but not soundproof, and old floors creak; thus, you will be peripherally aware of other guests in adjacent apartments and they will be peripherally aware of you.

PARKING INFO: Our neighborhood has free street parking. We are a small street, so in the winter, the snow plow can be slow to get here.

LAUNDRY: There are SHARED laundry facilities located in the apartment house through an entrance in the back yard. The laundry room is shared with the three other apartments in the house. Due to our allergies/asthma and environmental concerns, only non-toxic and fragrance-free products are permitted in the laundry room. We will provide an initial supply of acceptable laundry detergent. After that, please make sure you use only FRAGRANCE-FREE, UNSCENTED products in our laundry room. The regular-capacity washer is not big enough to handle blankets and quilts. If you want these items washed, we are happy to do it for you in our large capacity washer or you can take them to a laundromat.

LAUNDROMAT: There is a laundromat a half-block from the Airbnb :)

The walls and floors of the old house are solid, but not sound-proof. Old floors creak. You will be peripherally aware of other guests staying in the 3 adjacent apartments, and they will be peripherally aware of you :) so please try to maintain a relatively quiet atmosphere,

There is a somewhat steep enclosed stairway to the studio entrance.

For health and environmental reasons: In the Airbnbs, we use zero-VOC paints, natural and non-toxic cleaning and laundry products, and we do not use fabric softener on bedding and towels. We also have solar panels on our metal roof!

When snow accumulates, we will shovel the sidewalks as soon as we can, but it is generally not until afternoon.

South Bend is on EASTERN time (it's one hour later than in nearby Chicago!)

- There are a couple friendly Cats on the property that reside downstairs. That being said, they occasionally greet our lovely guests. While they are friendly they aren’t disturbing if they’re unwanted you shouldn’t have any issues.

- We have a strict NO SMOKING policy. If you break the rules and smoke inside, you will be charged a $1,000 fine.

- Although the majority of the space is recently updated, this is an older home and nowhere near perfect. If you were looking for a perfection, please book a hotel!

The apartment is an upstairs 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom apartment with commercial space on the first floor. Take note: The apartment is accessed by an indoor, private, lighted, and railed staircase. There is no elevator.

The bedroom overlooks historic 2nd Street and the rest of the apartment overlooks the north city parking lot where there is free parking for guests. Noise and light blocking curtains are hung on the bedroom windows.

The north face of the building is adorned with a 70' x 23' mural by renowned mural artis Chris Stackowicz, commemorating the Indiana-Michigan River Valley Trail that runs 2 blocks west of the building. It's a great starting point for bikers and hikers wanting to explore the 30+ miles of off-road, paved trails that connect Niles, Michigan to St. Joseph county, Roseland, Notre Dame/St. Marys, South Bend and Mishawaka in Indiana.

Guest have a number code entry door and private, enclosed stairway to access the apartment that encompasses the entire 2nd floor of the building. The downstairs entry code door locks automatically when it is closed. There is also a chair lock on the upstairs door for additional peace of mind.

Please be aware that the city of Niles has begun construction of the NODE (Niles Outdoor Dining Experience). The North 2nd Street block in front of our building is being removed and replaced with a permanent pedestrian entertainment and dining plaza. Construction is happening weekdays only, between 7am and 5pm until scheduled completion this month. There is no longer traffic noise on the block but there is potential for intermittent construction noise during those weekday daytime hours. There is no construction currently planned for weekends or after 5pm.

Construction zone sidewalks remain open and our block remains bustling as Four Flags Antique Mall windows are decorated for Christmas and "2nd & Main" coffee house continues to unveil their autumn adult cocktail offerings.

As a "Construction Special," we have discounting our weekday stay rates by 20% until the NODE is completed. Late December is looking like a great time to check out the new Heart of Niles NODE, so book your getaway stays early.
