Stilt House @ Fernwood.eco with sauna & hot tub
Apartment
Clifden, Galway, Ireland

The incredible, architecturally designed Stilt House opened in August 2022 and is our most ambitious project to date. Perched on 57 stilts above the woodland floor with a unique elliptical excision, we are so excited to share this project with our new guests.

Internally clad in a pine plywood finish, stained in forest green and with floor to ceiling windows, you have a sense of being wholly enveloped by the surrounding woodland.

The experience within the space is a calming journey of moving from dimly lit to wide open vistas. The elliptical curve invites you to discover what awaits around the corner. Each window with a different aspect, inviting light into the space at different times of the day.

A stay in the Stilt House will soothe the senses of your soul and bring you back to nature. Oh, there's a wood fired Swedish hot tub hidden in the woods, just for your own use!

Being completely isolated in the woods, need not come without the simple luxuries that we offer at all of our Fernwood stays. At 45 square metres, it feels even bigger, and would rival a honeymoon suite in size and experience.

The Stilt House has the same mattress as those used in the Merrion Hotel Dublin whilst furniture has either been locally handmade or sourced from design houses in Scandinavia. There is a Bang and Olufsen portable speaker, which can be brought outside whilst you relax under the birch canopy in the wood-fired hot tub.

The fully equipped kitchenette comes with a microwave oven combi, an induction hob and fridge with freezer compartment. As always, there is tea & coffee along with other breakfast items to get you started.

The bathroom is huge, with a fabulous rain shower and awesome window overlooking the native Irish woodland.

In keeping with our minimal impact ethos at Fernwood, the building is A-rated and features triple glazed windows and an air to water heat pump.

Guest Reviews:

- "I was traveling with my daughter, husband and mother-in-law. The place was so nice - everyone was happy with their room (comfy beds) and bathroom. The condo is well equipped for cooking and eating in or super close to many restaurant and pub options. Bring your own ground coffee though if that is a must have for you! Quite close to Connemara National Park and the abbey - and so much more! I would definitely stay here again." - "This was a great base for exploring Clifden and Connemara. Although it is in the middle of the town it was actually really quiet overnight, but really convenient for access to all the shops, bars, restaurants etc in Clifden. The accommodation looks just like the photographs. The outside isn't pretty, and doesn't have great views but if you would rather have the convenience of being able to eat out in the evening, or go for a drink and not have to drive home, then this is the place for you! Only suggestions would be to provide salt, pepper, tea and coffee etc, but since there plenty of shops close by it wasn't a big problem."

CLIFDEN TOWN

Clifden town is the capital of Connemara one of the most scenic regions in Ireland. Established in the early 1800’s at Clifden Bay, it follows the classic 19th century layout: oval in plan, with 3 principal streets – Market Street, Main Street and Bridge Street, a Market Square, a fine bridewell or gaol, courthouse and harbour.

Clifden today is a vibrant and cultural town which has retained its historic roots while offering a wide range of services and facilities. You will find colourful streets with a great selection of small local food shops – (fishmongers, butchers, fruit and vegetable store, delicatessens and a bakery), numerous craft and gift shops, art galleries and exhibitions and other interesting shops including antique shops, designer clothes shops, jewellery and vintage shops.

There are 9 restaurants and 10 pubs with music sessions each evening and good bar food. On the practical side there are four supermarkets, including Aldi and Lidl, which are open until 9pm (mon-sat), two banks, three chemists, two petrol stations, two churches and a post office.

Set on the edge of the Atlantic, the surrounding scenery is spectacular, and waiting to be discovered.

CONNEMARA

A vast coastal region world renowned for its wild and stunning scenery, and magical light. It is dotted with small villages and historical sites. To the north is stretches to the border of Mayo and the town of Westport is 45 mins drive from Clifden.
To the east it reaches to Galway city, which is one hour's drive from Clifden and well worth a visit. To the south is the Connemara Gaelteacht area- an Irish speaking area which is famous for its coral strands.

THINGS TO DO:

- WALKING AND CYCLING:

The area is a walker’s paradise whether following a planned route or just ambling along country roads and beaches, of which there are many. You will find a folder of 20 different Connemara walks in your house or follow the road signs around the countryside which indicate good routes for walking or cycling.

Bicycles and electric bikes can be hired throughout the year.

Worth a visit.......

CONNEMARA NATIONAL PARK
Some of the most spectacular vistas can be seen from any of the National park walks, which range from a half-hour gentle ascent to a full climb to the peak of the Diamond Mountain, approximately 4 hours to the summit and back.
Home to Connemara ponies, wild goats and Irish deer there is also a history museum, café, children’s playground and picnic area.

- "Sunnybank House is exactly as described. Highlights for our group of 18 family and relatives include: evening gatherings around the two peat-burining fireplaces with a variety of Irish Whiskeys; a very short walk to the pubs and restaraunts in Clifden, having a chef cook a delicious dinner in our own kitchen for all of us to enjoy, sightseeing all around Connemara; golf at the Connemara Links course just 15 minutes away; and wonderful pub visits out in the country...especially Paddy Coynes pub in Tully Cross. Overall a great place to stay in a great part of Ireland."

- "Beautiful property, great location and absolute gem of a host in Pearl. Only issue was not having the 2nd shower operational." - "Riverview is located within an easy walk of Clifden town and all restaurants, shops, bars etc. The apartment was spotlessly clean & the owner thoughtfully left a litre of milk & a slab butter in the fridge. Also a delicious homemade brown bread. All linen, towels, pillows & duvets were crisp, clean & of luxury quality. Additional extras were left for our use e.g., pump soap in both bathrooms; Fairy liquid at the kitchen sink: tea towels & kitchen towel: tea bags, a variety of herbal teas & a specialised coffee maker. Tin foil & cling film & plastic bags for rubbish disposal. So many wonderful thoughtful extras. Hot water always available as well as a power shower in the en suite. This is a top class apartment in a fabulous location. We highly recommend it. In fact we have already requested a booking for next year. Thanks to Connemara Lettings for once again arranging this great getaway for us :-))"

- "We stayed for two weeks at this beautiful Georgian home right on the waterfront. We really got to experience the coming together of all the elements: this beautiful home, the sea, the rocks, the wind, the animals and the birds. The hosts were lovely as was Karen the property manager, who was so helpful with local recommendations and history. We will definitely return!" - "How fabulous to stay in a very old Irish Manor. The house has the most fabulous views and the layout is fantastic for three families composed of 6 adults and 4 children. Having five bathrooms, three of them en-suite made it easy for everyone. The bedrooms are on the lower level and the living/entertaining rooms are on the upper level with an adjacent deck which provides excellent views from all rooms. The kitchen, while small is very efficient with surrounding windows making it cheery and bright. The bath towels are large, not skimpy. The beds are comfortable. The dining room table is fantastic; a great place to gather for meals and tell stories after days of adventure. The children loved being right on the water and exploring the "beach" for treasures. Skipping rocks was also fun for them. While the drive is on a very curvey narrow lane, there are pullouts to allow other cars to pass. It takes 15 minutes to get to town, but the views and being right on the water make it worthwhile. I wish we had more time for our visit there, as Clifden is a great town and it would have been nice to explore the area and the beach more. Marcus is outstanding to work with and Karen provided tips for services in town which we were in need of. I would stay in Marcus' home again in a heartbeat. I only wish we had more history about the house."

- "I never thought it was possible to have a place be grand at the same time as it was inviting, comfortable, and cozy until we stayed at Kill House. Jackie the owner welcomed us and it was clear from her description that it was a family friendly place and our young children were completely at home. The floors were heated and we were warm and cozy the whole time. The kitchen and bedrooms were very large as were the grounds. The character, restoration and furnishings of this historic home we’re stunning. The location was perfect for jumping off to all places on the eastern half of the Connemara loop for half day trips. We would tell anybody and everybody to visit this unique property."
