I took my two children (6 and 10) there and we had a four day vacation that we will never forget. The location is stunning, private and tranquil. Only gave the location 4 stars as it was a little bit challenging to find the first time! The property itself was very well maintained and very clean. Although we didn't need anything from the owners or managers, they were communicative and we had their info at the ready. This place was simply awesome and we'll never forget it."

The newest addition to Hill City is a VERY LARGE chain saw art Smokey the Bear on the north edge of Main Street. The Hill City school district still remains the only school in the United State allowed to use this mascot and hold their graduation ceremonies at Mt. Rushmore.

The Hynes Cabin- 1925 Renovated Classic with Stunning Views
Cabin
Hill City, South Dakota, USA

The Hynes Family Cabin is a once-in-a lifetime experience. Built by our grandparents nearly a century ago, the cabin will transport you and your family back to the beautiful, authentic charms of the Old West, while you enjoy plenty of modern amenities.

The cabin sleeps seven, with three twin beds and two queen beds. Its 40’ wide sleeping porch is unique, and has a truly breathtaking view. Our grandparents chose this location for the most beautiful vista they’d ever seen. At sunset, you’ll see Mt. Elkhorn and Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) glow pink and gold. An occasional rainbow will dazzle you. Each morning you can watch a herd of horses running from their nearby pasture to the stable.

Children love the Hynes Cabin. Great climbing rocks are all around. Our original ball and claw bathtub is on the porch, filled with pillows and inviting kids to read and snooze. “A Boy’s Life in the Hills,” written by our dad, shares tales of his many adventures. Our guests love to sit on the porch or in our cozy living room and read tales about the West. It’s a place that encourages rest and renewal, with lots of fun things to do close by and a quiet place to come home to at day’s end.

There’s a chest full of fun family games and a DVD player. KOA amenities – trail rides, a water slide, miniature golf, two swimming pools, movie nights and pancake breakfasts – are available. Only the trail rides and pancake breakfasts have a fee. Many nearby trails invite hikers of all skill levels. Iconic Mt. Rushmore and charming Hill City, “the art capital of the Hills,” are both just six miles away. Pristine Sheridan Lake, where the family can swim, fish and hike, is only a 15-minute drive away.

The Hynes cabin is a perfect place for a romantic getaway, too. Its beauty, quiet and privacy will help you relax and refresh. There are two queen beds, one on the porch and one in the living room.

There are so many personal touches that you’ll feel right at home. Our handsome queen headboards were made by a local carpenter, and the four pine chests were built for the cabin in 1925. Frances made all the curtains by hand, just as our grandmother did nearly a century ago. On the porch there’s a display of some of the daily objects she used: her apron, her Vaseline glassware, her Mixmaster and other objects. The coffee table was made from the cabin’s original closet. Newly installed solid wood doors compliment the cabin’s authentic feel. A book of photos tells the history of the Hynes Cabin.

The 40’ wide sleeping porch is just as it was 100 years ago, with our family’s saddles hanging on the rafters. Antique light fixtures from the 1930s adorn the two bathrooms. The newly refurbished kitchen is fully equipped. And for nearly 100 years, guests have been sharing their memories and whimsy on paper plates that are all part of this truly unique experience. We look forward to hosting you in our Hynes Family Cabin.
~ Frances and Arthur Hynes

- "The whole process was so easy, it was located perfectly for the place we wanted to see." - "Great place to listen to the rain, watch the sunset and listen to the horses. I will be coming back again. Cell service was bad and no WiFi at cabin. Yet for me that was perfect. If you are doing any work during your stay you will need to drive to the front " - "The kids loved the sleeping porch. The KOA can be a bit noisy in the evenings, but wasn’t unbearable. We took the kids down to the FunZone one morning and ate at the All You Can Eat Pancake breakfast. It was a great place for our family! "

In less than a minute’s walk, you can ride the state’s only steam-powered passenger train, visit the South Dakota State Railroad Museum, the world’s largest private fossil research facility and museum, four art galleries and specialty shops, two adventure shops, chocolate and ice cream parlors, one wine-tasting room, and several stores with a wide variety of goods. You also have your choice of tourist-oriented fare, including Black Hills Gold. Within three minutes’ walk, you have your choice of seven restaurants. Just outside the pedestrian district, and within a few miles in each direction, there are even more specialty shops, wineries and tasting rooms, saloons, and more. Hill City…it’s a thing. FURTHER Visitors can park in the driveway and stay put for their whole trip—or hit the road to one of the area’s natural attractions. Roger Brooks, nationally-known branding expert, has called the Black Hills area the nation’s most “attractive” place—when it comes to the number of things to do. Don’t forget Custer State Park to Devil’s Tower, Black Elk Peak, the Needle’s Highway, or our area caves, including Jewel Cave, with the third-longest passages in the world. Explore agate-hunting beds, go fishing, hunting, hiking, horse-back riding, biking, snowmobiling, ATVing, and whatever else you can think of. Keep in mind that the Secretary of Tourism has called Hill City the state’s arts mecca, which has contributed to its reputation. This gives Hill City its own “experience,” and allows it to stand out from other small towns and villages in the region. With its position in the middle of the Black Hills, it provides easy access to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorials (each 15 minutes away), and Deadwood to the north and Hot Springs to the south (each 45 to 60 minutes away, depending on traffic). You’ll also meet thousands of motorcycle riders in early August, attendees of the world’s largest bike rally—but that can get a little loud. Other sounds include the steam train whistle from across the street, and an artistic chainsaw artist who works in the afternoons across the alley. There are also musicians who play on the street, along with summer festivals and events. Please check the doorbells placed outside the main doors. Give it a ring and welcome your visitors. Check the Chamber of Commerce website for details.

Owners Sam and Linda live in the all new hospitality residence, separately from your ‘moose farm’ (…said tongue-in-cheek, because the decor, besides faux moose sightings, includes an eclectic variety of farm artifacts, gleaned from the childhoods of your host and hostess.) The overall BnB cottage consists of three individual distinct units: owner quarters; Eloosive Moose (in-home cabin); and Chokecherry Hideout (in-home cabin Vrbo ID 3539428). Yes, you do have your own personal porch entrance, with the inviting look of a good-natured cabin!

Other things to note
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

DO THE CABINS HAVE PHONES AND WI- FI? Wi-Fi signal is strongest in the Coffee Shop and at the Bathhouse Patio – you may have service in you’re your cabin as well. There are no phones in the cabins. Be prepared for pockets with "no service" as you travel around the Black Hills. You may want to check with your service provider about your particular phone coverage and plan for extra data usage. It is good to remember that when a call won't go through out in the hills , sometimes a text will , and a paper map in the car is an old reliable method of navigation.

HOUSEKEEPING
We do not enter your cabin during your stay. The Cabin is equipped for light housekeeping on your own and we appreciate your respectfully tidying up before you check out. Fresh towels and supplies are available daily at our "towel window" at the lodge.

ARE THE CABINS AIR CONDITIONED?
No. Our cabins are nature cooled, and fans are available should nature need a little help. With the windows open you will breathe fresh mountain air and wake to the scent of pine. Resting on the shady side of the mountain at approximately 5000 feet above the sea level, heat and humidity are usually held in check and the cabins have good ventilation.

WHAT SHALL I WEAR?
Summer days are generally cooler in the hills with temperatures in the 70's and 80's, while nights can get as low as the 30's, so it is wise to bring sweatshirts and jeans as well as your summer clothes. You will be glad you brought comfortable shoes for hiking and walking. A bathing suit is required for use of the hot tub and sauna or if you plan to visit an area pool, lake or water slide park. Due to potential fire danger, the sauna ( wood heated ) is only open in the cool months.

DO YOU PROVIDE BREAKFAST?
We leave most of the cooking up to you, however you may want to come up to the Perky Pine Cafe in the morning to see what we've baked up - the coffee shop also has locally roasted Dark Canyon coffee beans and a variety of teas available for purchase . The kitchenettes are equipped and you'll find everything you need in the way of groceries at the local shops and grocery store right in Hill City. If you'd prefer to dine out, we'd be happy to refer you to some of our favorite eating places or peruse the menus we keep on hand in the lobby/coffee shop. You'll definitely want to check out the Silver Dollar Saloon and Family Restaurant around the bend for some homemade pizza.

IS THERE HIKING NEARBY?
Feel free to truly hike and explore the natural beauty of the Black Hills National Forest directly adjoining our property. There are also numerous mapped and marked trails in the Black Hills National Forest and Custer State Park within an easy drive. The Mickelson trail access is less than one mile. We are happy to share with you those we've hiked or provide a source of information on those we haven't. We find the Black Hills to be very accessible hiking for all ages and abilities.

WHERE TO FISH?
There are several public lakes in the Black Hills , mainly stocked with trout. Our nearest fishing ponds are within a half to one mile from Pine Rest and we are happy to point you in the right direction. Spring Creek runs through Hill City and Rapid Creek is popular for fly fishing. Major Lake is a small lake right across from the grocery store in Hill City. Sheridan, Pactola and Deerfield are the larger lakes nearest us. Temporary fishing licenses are available at the local gas station and hardware store.

DO YOU HAVE A POOL OR HOT TUB?
We do have a hot tub for older kids ( 12 & up) and adults, but no pool . You'll also want your suits to enjoy a sunny day at one of the area lakes. We are happy to point you in the right direction. Some of the marinas rent pontoon boats and fishing boats, or paddle boats and canoes.

We are happy to have the naturally heated indoor and outdoor pools at Hot Springs' Evans Plunge about an hour from us. Custer, 11 miles, has a public pool and there are several in Rapid City - 27 miles. The Watiki Water Park in Rapid City, less than an hour from us, is also open all year. Our favorite swimming lakes with restroom facilities are Center Lake in Custer State Park, Angostura Lake near Hot Springs, and Sheridan Lake, just 7 miles north of us off of Hwy 385. Day use Permits or Park stickers are required for these swimming areas.

ARE YOUR CABINS SECLUDED?
No. As with most private property situated within the boundaries of the Black Hills National Forest , we are right along the main road. Pine Rest Cabins has three short gravel driveways, just off of highway 16/385 allowing quick and easy access for those who like to be out and about during the day and return in the evening to unwind. In the winter time our road is well maintained and very quiet. Our home for over 26 years, we love it here among the mountains and pines, yet having everything so handy. However, if after your first stay with us you find that you'd prefer to be further from it all, we understand. Let us know, and we'd be glad to refer you to other possibilities that may better suit your needs next time.

WHAT ABOUT CAMPFIRES?
Being in the center of the national forest, we are cautious about open fires . Each cabin does have a grill. You are invited to use the chiminea at the bathhouse patio during low fire danger. We are located in the Black Hills National Forest Fire protection district and are subject to the rules and regulations thereof.

WHERE CAN WE DO LAUNDRY?
Laundromats are located at the two gas station/convenience stores - Conoco & Exxon - in Hill City.

DO THE CABINS HAVE PHONES AND WI- FI? Wi-Fi signal is strongest in the Coffee Shop and at the Bathhouse Patio – you may have service in you’re your cabin as well. There are no phones in the cabins. Hill City Hideaway on the Mickelson Trail
House
Hill City

Location, location, location. Hill City is located in the center of the Black Hills and this house is within walking distance of the best parts of Hill City. 40 feet to the world famous Mickelson Trail, 1/2 a block to the 1880s steam train, and 3 blocks to the best restaurant in South Dakota.

This home is not too big and not too small. Whether you are doing a couples get away, traveling with kids or your friends this home may be "just right" for you.

The space
A glass garage door next to the dining area looks out onto the covered porch and the world famous Mickelson Trail.

A simple kitchen with fridge, stove dishwasher and microwave make meal preparation easy.

The sleeping loft over looks the living room. Kids won't be ble to decide where to sleep, the loft or the bunk bed room?? (Please note: The sleeping loft, Bedroom #3, has a steep set of stairs for access and may not be suitable for all guests.)

The main bath has a separate shower room and there is an additional half bath down the hall.

The main bedroom has a small walk-in closet and a queen size bed.

Laundry is available and guests have access to a garage. There is room to park 2 vehicles with private off street parking.

For guests wondering about access for anyone elderly or with a physical limitation, the main level of the house has no stairs, only door thresholds that need to be stepped over to gain access to the main living space. The exception to this is the sleeping loft which has a steep set of stairs to access it. Please carefully consider whether or not you will be using this space and if the people using it will be able to safely use the stairs.

Guest access
You have access to the main level of the home. This is your private space. It includes 2 bedrooms, a full bath and a half bath, living room, dining area, kitchen, sleeping loft, laundry, garage and covered porch.

There is a separate small apartment above the garage that the owners use 3 or 4 nights a month.

Other things to note
Be on the lookout for the neighborhood deer. They are always around, day and night. They are still wild though, please don't feed them.

We also (not often) have mountain lions that come by.

Amenities:

Cleaning products • Hair dryer • Shower gel • Mountain view • Hot water • Shampoo • Bathtub • Body soap • Conditioner • Free washer – In unit
