Marshall Gulch Getaway is an authentic hand-hewn log cabin overlooking a serene valley on 7 acres just 2 miles outside of Hill City. A mountain creek flows within view below the cabin. Deer and turkeys are frequent visitors in the yard! The cabin is tastefully decorated with décor fitting the mountain atmosphere. This cozy cabin has a king size log bed in the loft, and a double bed on the main floor bedroom. We allow a max of 4 adults in this rental. If a third sleeping area is needed for a child, you may bring an air mattress and necessary linens. The kitchen is spacious for a family of 4-5.
There is one bathroom with a tub/shower combo and laundry accommodations with washer and dryer. The loft bedroom has a window AC. Board games and playing cards available for rainy or snowy days. There is a 47-inch flat screen satellite TV in the living room, along with a real wood burning fireplace! (And electric heat throughout). We supply a starter supply of firewood, and you can purchase extra at a local grocery store.
The covered front porch is a favorite of guests to sit and watch the wildlife and let the day slip away. Around back is patio with a Gas Log fire-pit that has plenty of outdoor seating to have your morning coffee, outdoor meals, or just sit and watch wildlife. A propane grill is also provided. This cabin sits on a beautiful hillside overlooking the valley below with views of Black Elk Peak. But, the drive to this cabin is a piece of cake and parking is plentiful. Large grassy lawn with plenty of space to roam. This rental is a time-honored favorite for repeat guests.
NO PETS/NO SMOKING. NO TENTS or additional people camping outdoors! No exceptions!

- "It was my family’s first time to South Dakota and this was a great experience all around. The cabin’s location was perfect for doing all the sight seeing. We enjoyed sitting on the deck and watching the wildlife. Cabin was clean and had everything we needed." - "The property is absolutely amazing!! Such a nice cozy place surrounded by awesome terrain!! Loved staying there - would do it again. Great hosts!!" - "The Marshall Gulch Getaway is so great that you almost want to keep it a secret. I took my two children (6 and 10) there and we had a four day vacation that we will never forget. The location is stunning, private and tranquil. Only gave the location 4 stars as it was a little bit challenging to find the first time! The property itself was very well maintained and very clean. Although we didn't need anything from the owners or managers, they were communicative and we had their info at the ready. This place was simply awesome and we'll never forget it."

The Couple's Cabin is a sweet log 'post & beam' construction in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Open all year long, this couple’s hideaway is tucked in behind the main house with the front door opening onto US Forest Service land. Total privacy and beautiful scenery. Because of the large windows in the living room & kitchen area you will feel as if you were outside - even when you are inside. Deer on the hillside and in the backyard are a common sight.
This cabin was the “home show display model” for a local log home builder thus everything is top of the line – cozy and comfortable. Walk to downtown Hill City! Enjoy the Black Hills while staying in the Twilight Hills cabin, centrally located in Hill City, South Dakota. This cute, remodeled cabin is a leisurely walk to downtown shops, the 1880 Train, the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research and Mickelson Trail.
This property has been described by guests as private and peaceful as it is set back from the main street. This location is just a short drive to Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, wineries, Sheridan, Pactola and Deerfield lakes and much, much more. The cabin was completely renovated in 2016. The cabin has two bedrooms and each bedroom has a queen size bed. The living room sofa pulls out into a bed. Both bedrooms have an air conditioning unit and a ceiling fan. There are also USB plug-ins for charging your devices. Brand new washer and dryer in 2021.

There are two outdoor security cameras on the property used for security of the driveway and garage.
Traveling with a trailer: Please note: The driveway is slightly uphill. This accommodates small trailers but may be a problem for long trailers or trailers low to the ground. "Backing up" skills for guests with trailers are needed to get in and out. This is not a 'pull-through' driveway. Long trailers are not recommended. Please reach out to the owners to determine if your trailer will work for the property.
Enjoy Hill City's downtown just a short walk from the cabin. Have something to eat and relax at the end of a busy day. Downtown has something for everyone with a wide variety of businesses.
The newest addition to Hill City is a VERY LARGE chain saw art Smokey the Bear on the north edge of Main Street. In 1939 the Hill City Rangers received the honor of using Smokey the Bear as their official school mascot after school boys assisted with a forest fire that threatened Hill City. The Hill City school district still remains the only school in the United State allowed to use this mascot and hold their graduation ceremonies at Mt. Rushmore.
Thank you for viewing our property. We invite you to Hill City and hope you enjoy the area as much as we do!!

The Hynes Family Cabin is a once-in-a lifetime experience. Built by our grandparents nearly a century ago, the cabin will transport you and your family back to the beautiful, authentic charms of the Old West, while you enjoy plenty of modern amenities.
The cabin sleeps seven, with three twin beds and two queen beds. Its 40’ wide sleeping porch is unique, and has a truly breathtaking view. Our grandparents chose this location for the most beautiful vista they’d ever seen. At sunset, you’ll see Mt. Elkhorn and Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) glow pink and gold. An occasional rainbow will dazzle you. Each morning you can watch a herd of horses running from their nearby pasture to the stable.
Children love the Hynes Cabin. Great climbing rocks are all around. Our original ball and claw bathtub is on the porch, filled with pillows and inviting kids to read and snooze. “A Boy’s Life in the Hills,” written by our dad, shares tales of his many adventures. Our guests love to sit on the porch or in our cozy living room and read tales about the West. It’s a place that encourages rest and renewal, with lots of fun things to do close by and a quiet place to come home to at day’s end.
There’s a chest full of fun family games and a DVD player. KOA amenities – trail rides, a water slide, miniature golf, two swimming pools, movie nights and pancake breakfasts – are available. Only the trail rides and pancake breakfasts have a fee. Many nearby trails invite hikers of all skill levels. Iconic Mt. Rushmore and charming Hill City, “the art capital of the Hills,” are both just six miles away. Pristine Sheridan Lake, where the family can swim, fish and hike, is only a 15-minute drive away.
The Hynes cabin is a perfect place for a romantic getaway, too. Its beauty, quiet and privacy will help you relax and refresh. There are two queen beds, one on the porch and one in the living room.
There are so many personal touches that you’ll feel right at home. Our handsome queen headboards were made by a local carpenter, and the four pine chests were built for the cabin in 1925. Frances made all the curtains by hand, just as our grandmother did nearly a century ago. On the porch there’s a display of some of the daily objects she used: her apron, her Vaseline glassware, her Mixmaster and other objects. The coffee table was made from the cabin’s original closet. Newly installed solid wood doors compliment the cabin’s authentic feel. A book of photos tells the history of the Hynes Cabin.
The 40’ wide sleeping porch is just as it was 100 years ago, with our family’s saddles hanging on the rafters. Antique light fixtures from the 1930s adorn the two bathrooms. The newly refurbished kitchen is fully equipped. And for nearly 100 years, guests have been sharing their memories and whimsy on paper plates that are all part of this truly unique experience. We look forward to hosting you in our Hynes Family Cabin.
~ Frances and Arthur Hynes
- "The whole process was so easy, it was located perfectly for the place we wanted to see." - "Great place to listen to the rain, watch the sunset and listen to the horses. I will be coming back again. Cell service was bad and no WiFi at cabin. Yet for me that was perfect. If you are doing any work during your stay you will need to drive to the front " - "The kids loved the sleeping porch. The KOA can be a bit noisy in the evenings, but wasn’t unbearable. We took the kids down to the FunZone one morning and ate at the All You Can Eat Pancake breakfast. It was a great place for our family! "

Black Hills Home Cabins at Chokecherry BnB, located IN Hill City (a neighborly very likable mountain town), features 2 in-home cabin style nightly vacation rentals, under the one roof of our NEW modern mountain cottage. This listing offers ELOOSIVE MOOSE, spacious, thought-out carefully for your comfort and convenience, and the rates are easy going while the benefits are exceptional! Owners Sam and Linda live in the all new hospitality residence, separately from your ‘moose farm’ (…said tongue-in-cheek, because the decor, besides faux moose sightings, includes an eclectic variety of farm artifacts, gleaned from the childhoods of your host and hostess.) The overall BnB cottage consists of three individual distinct units: owner quarters; Eloosive Moose (in-home cabin); and Chokecherry Hideout (in-home cabin Vrbo ID 3539428). Yes, you do have your own personal porch entrance, with the inviting look of a good-natured cabin!
NOTE 1—Our Vrbo calendar is set for showing availability from present to six months out, and adjusts automatically to always show six months availability.
NOTE 2—Please take time to read the House Rules/Policies (at bottom) provided with this listing, as well as to look at the amenities available or not available. It is IMPORTANT to do so before sending a Request To Book. For instance, we are firm on renting to NON-SMOKERS only [people who do NOT smoke]. Under no circumstances can we accommodate people who smoke, even if they smoke off-property. (If this policy is relevant to you, please read About Our Non-Smokers Only Policy at bottom of this description page.) Again, please read the rules and policies, and check the amenities shown elsewhere in this listing. Thank you.
CHECKIN window between 4:00-6:00 p.m.—The checkin window is to let you know that we are not ready to receive guests before 4:00, so that isn’t an option; however, after 6:00 we usually have more flexibility. (The morning of your arrival date we will email to ask if you must be later than 6:00, and approximately what time to anticipate your arrival.)
CHECKOUT by 11:00 a.m.—Necessary particularly when we have guests arriving later the same day as your checkout.
A suggestion—if you are three or four adults traveling together, you may check to see if Chokecherry Hideout is also available and, if so, you could rent both in-home cabins! We have accommodated guests who did just that. The benefits include two full bathrooms, privacy between the in-home cabins, two places to spend time together, a picnic table, two grills (one electric and one charcoal), and probably you could think of other benefits as well. Please inquire if you have questions.

Views are amazing, and cabin is so cozy, and comfortable." - "The property was at the top of a mountain in Hill City, SD. There is a wonderful view of the Black Hills from this property. Our getaway cabin in the Central Black Hills is perfect for those who are looking for a quiet base for their Black Hills vacation. Very accessible location, the roads to the cabin are all paved, except the last one-tenth of a mile, which is nicely-graded gravel.
Panoramic views of the hills and forest from all rooms of the cabin. Main floor has one bedroom (1 full bed), one bathroom, living/dining area, a full kitchen, and covered deck. Large loft has sleeping area (1 queen bed and 1 full bed) and TV/DVD. Unfinished basement has a ping-pong table. Elderly and wheelchair friendly, with zero steps to get from your vehicle to the main floor. Our cabin is a place for the family to unplug, with limited cell service and no internet.
Start your day with a lovely breakfast on the large deck, with just the murmuring sounds of the nearby ponderosa trees. Spend an adventure-filled day in the Black Hills or simply laze around the cabin and meander through the backyard forest.
The major attractions of the Black Hills - Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Sylvan Lake - are just 30 minutes away. Jewel Cave is one hour away. For shopping and dining, Hill City is 15 minutes away. The village of Rochford and the ghost town of Mystic are 30 minutes away. Fishing, boating, and hiking at Deerfield Lake are just four miles away. For those who love to take in the gorgeous Black Hills, while burning calories, we have mountain bikes available free for your use. From the cabin, pedal three miles on a rough country road and you'll reach the Mickelson Trail, the best rails-to-trails in the West.
Come and enjoy the Black Hills from our forest's edge cabin!
- "Very clean and comfortable cabin! We had no cell service the entire stay, which we were aware would be a possibility. Normally, I wouldn’t be too concerned about that, however we did have some storms roll through during our stay. Ruby was quick to communicate that there were forecasted storms and made sure we knew there was a weather radio available in the cabin. The double beds were a little too small for my wife and I, so we shared the upstairs loft with our 5 and 7 year kiddos (which they loved). Overall, great place and we enjoyed being away from the hustle and bustle! Highly recommend to anyone looking to disconnect a bit!"
