One mile of gravel driveway leads to The Rustic Cabin in the midst of the Black Hills surrounded on two sides by Forest Service. There are hiking trails leading into the forest service directly from the cabin and if you are lucky and walk quietly you will see deer, jack rabbits, turkey and possibly elk.
Take a break from technology as there is no WIFI and limited cell service. Instead in the evenings enjoy star gazing from the porch or gazebo. Or take a short drive to the historic gambling town of Deadwood five miles north on Hwy 385.
Inside, you'll find a fully stocked kitchen with a stove, oven, dorm size refrigerator, beverage refrigerator, coffee maker, kettle, toaster and a grill on the covered front porch, allowing you to easily prepare delicious meals. Relax in the living room and unwind with the Bose wave radio or a movie on the DVD player. There is a view of the pond and gazebo from the covered front porch of the cabin. During the dry months of July & August the pond is very low as it fluctuates due to the water table.
Because the nighttime temperature range in the mid 40’s to 50’s we do not offer air conditioning.
There is trailer parking for your ATV, side x side or motorcycle trailer. Just go past the driveway that leads to the cabin then straight ahead towards the gazebo to park your trailer.
The Black Hills motorized trail system can be accessed at the Steel Wheel Gas and Convenience store located 1 mile south from the cabin on Hwy 385. A permit is needed to use the Forest Service trail system. Permits are available for purchase at Steel Wheel. As of July 2024, Forest Service closed trail 538.1G and trail 247.1E which were used to access the motorized trail system from the cabin.
Our home is also on the property and you will see it first as you cross through the gate. The cabin has its own driveway access and is separated from our home by the small pond, gazebo and campfire area. Our nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away.
Bill designed and built the cabin which he finished in 2018. The cabin measures 12 × 26 with a 10 x 12 loft, a full bath, kitchen and a queen size bed in the loft (an earlier guest commented that the open stairs are steep). The living room area has a reclining couch and a comfortable recliner. The Samsung smart TV’s reception is by antenna with local channels.
Enjoy the convenience of being minutes from Deadwood and centrally located to all the famous attractions the Black Hills have to offer. Whether you're seeking a cozy retreat or an adventure-filled getaway, our cabin is the perfect destination.
- "Exactly as listed, and met all expectations. Communication was excellent. Host went and above and beyond to make the stay comfortable." - "This cabin was nice. It was out away from people and the rush of Deadwood. We would stay here again in the future for a getaway without kids." - "Communication with owners was great from booking till after we left and asked to let them how when we made it home (1750 mile trip) Cabin was was just as described and they left nothing to surprise you. It was a great stay other than we as group had some old men heath issues, that was nothing to do with cabin. Would stay again, enjoy owners, thank you to them!"

Mary and Mark were great, Mary even spent time working with our kids on many things and let them pet their horses. House had great charm and just what a Black Hills retreat should be. Thanks again." - "The cabin absolutely exceeded our expectations in every way possible! The cabin was very clean, comfortable and homey. Coming “home” every night was a true blessing as we enjoyed sitting on the front porch listening and observing nature. - "Greg did not exaggerate his listing. His property is nestled between the soaring canyon walls of Spearfish Canyon. Breathtaking views are not only beheld at the lodge, but all along route 14 from Spearfish to Lead. We encountered mountain goats daily (sometimes twice!) when we were traversing the route. Saw many deer around the property and of course, plenty of other wildlife. We spent our early morning drinking coffee and watching the deer as well as several different birds of prey soar along the canyon walls. Evenings were spent relaxing on the deck if we weren’t in Deadwood or Sturgis. There is plenty to do around the lodge. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, plenty of trails await you. We strongly suggest a trek to Devil’s bathtub and both Roughlock and Spearfish falls. If hiking isn’t your thing, various business offer Polaris and other rentals. Deadwood is a short 30 minute drive from the lodge. Mt Rushmore was about 1 hr and 30 minutes, as was Custer state park and Crazy Horse. Needles Highway is a must if you wish to see as much indigenous wildlife as possible. Plenty of bison, goats, deer, coyotes, etc. Greg is a personable and knowledgeable host. Very friendly and full of advice. He’s lived in the area for a long time and certainly can guide you to whatever adventure you seek. Thanks again, Greg! We plan on visiting often!"

- "Loved the creek." - "This spot was perfect for relaxing and enjoying nature. We slept with the windows open and enjoyed the sound of the river nearby and the wind in the trees. One more a doe and fawn were spotted in the brush coming down the hill. Everything was as described. It does take a while to get there on an unpaved but the road was well maintained. Even after a rain, we had no problem riding our motorcycles on it." - "Beautiful, clean, and relaxing!"

This luxury cabin sits creek side within 14 private wooded mountainous acres of silence and bliss. The porch embodies the Black Hills beauty, history and majesty. The rock outcroppings and goldmine on site speak to the rich history and rugged natural beauty found only in the Black Hills. The home sits just a few miles outside the town of Deadwood and is at a higher elevation than Deadwood itself so we materially see more snow than Deadwood. The winters are harsh and unpredictable. It can and does snow anytime between September 15th and June 15th. There are 2 bedrooms. The master has a king size log bed and is on the 2nd floor with a private bathroom. The guest bedroom has a queen size bed and is on the 1st floor. There is a day bed in the loft that is 72" x 38" and suitable for a child or small adult. There is a 1st floor full bathroom just outside the guest bedroom. The house itself sits in a gulch and is creek side. It is surrounded by high mountain rims and tall trees so shade dominates the house. There are 7 OUTDOOR security camera's that alert us to guest arrivals, cleaners, vendors, deliveries, propane and wood deliveries and weather conditions (especially important to weather conditions and plow activity). One is located in the creek bed to monitor flooding under the bridge, one is under the deck to monitor the snow melting equipment. One is positioned to cover the front door and one the back door. Another monitors the driveway area while the last covers the back of the house hillside and LP tanks. NONE are inside the home, and all are turned off once a guest arrives and turned on again once a guest leaves. Mountain lions, hunters and gold seekers sometimes wonder onto the property, we monitor those activities for your and the home's safety. We respect your privacy and have no interest in your leisure time, only your safety.
- "Very peaceful" - "This home does not disappoint in anyway absolutely stunning highly recommend a stay at destiny if you plan on visiting South Dakota" - "We only had a few days, but couldn't have picked a better place to stay. We loved everything about the house and area. It was so nice to sit outside and listen to the creek, very relaxing! The kids and the dog had a lot of fun down in the creek also." - "It’s really hard to describe how beautiful and perfect this home and property is. Clean, beautiful, comfy just doesn’t do it justice. We had so much fun hiking around this property, playing in the stream ( the dog was in heaven !) and evenings on that porch. I would 100% pick this home and location again. LOVED IT! Unique gem, Geodesic Dome cabin on 3 acres, nestled in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. Wildwoods Cabin will be the perfect stay for your vacation! Wildwoods has the feel of being secluded however the Mickelson Trail (non motorized trail) runs just below the property for easy access to hiking, biking & skiing. It is the perfect place to get away from it all & back in touch with nature. Enjoy the deck, with wildlife traveling thru the property. Mickelson trail goes right thru property. So cabin is less than 1/10th of a mile (right next to trail) from the trail. This is a peaceful location enjoyed by many so PLEASE NO MOTORIZED OFF ROAD VEHICLES (atv's, side by sides etc)....Thank you for your understanding). No campers, RV’s or tents allowed without prior permission and additional charge. Final note: While a car can get to the cabin we would recommend AWD or 4WD to cover all weather and road conditions. We do have a lower parking area if needed just below the cabin. Re: motorcycles…..it total depends on you comfort level riding….. Some are totally fine with gravel road leading to our driveway and also fine with driveway and some don’t like gravel and hills. We do have a lower parking area for motorcycles, and then it’s a very short hike to the cabin. If you have questions, please reach out and I can explain more. Thank you !
- "We so loved the location of this remote little dome - exactly what we needed for the two of us! Thank you again for sharing your property with us!" - "Wonderful place to stay! Enjoyed sitting outside with morning coffee and evening wine. Good location in a quiet secluded neighborhood. Driveway to the house was a little steep and rough for my little car but added to the adventure of the trip. House does have 2 beds, separated by a partial wall, in the loft but no doors and not actually separate rooms."

- "Wonderful stay, clean beautiful cabin! Thank you." - "Dog friendly cabin with all the amenities overlooking hole #4 at Boulder Canyon. It was clear from our arrival that Anna & JP have put a lot of thought into this property. Everything you need from the comforts of home was provided. Central location made it easy to day trip anywhere in the Black Hills, Custer State Park and the surrounding areas. We like to cook and grill for meals and found the utensils and cooking equipment to be complete and as good as at home. Relaxing under the covered porch with an adult beverage on those adirondack chairs (tilt & swivel) was a perfect way to end the day. Nearly a dozen deer came down each night at dusk and walked across the property. Even the neighbors were friendly. Beds were comfy, large closets, tv's, washer/dryer, nice towels, and a shower with good water pressure made the stay very enjoyable. Had to wash dishes by hand and the highway is a little noisy with the windows open but were not considered inconveniences during our stay. The hosts were always available but left us alone to enjoy our getaway. Overall, you will not be disappointed in this property, the location, or the Vrbo experience with these hosts. 9.5 out of 10... and we will be coming back."

This cabin is rich with history as the original National Forest Ranger Outpost dating back to the late 1800's
It is the perfect starting point for all your outdoor adventures and is in one of the heaviest snowfall areas of the Black Hills. You'll have immediate access to ATV and snowmobile trails, adventure moto, hiking, mountain bike trails, endless gravel biking, hunting, and more.
This property is so deep in the National Forest, it is solar powered. However, that does not mean rustic!
There is also plenty of parking.
This cabin is not just a place to stay, it is a UNIQUE AND REAL EXPERIENCE far into the national forest. It is not located a development, it is off by itself. As a result, the absolute silence that you will witness is something to behold. Are you up for the adventure? Please message us with questions.
Experience complete off grid living at 6,000 feet with every convenience of a modern home, including Starlink internet, smart TV for streaming movies after a long day of fun, and propane heat. The entire property is solar powered, yet it runs so seamlessly it’s hard to even tell it’s 7 miles from the nearest power line. The Ranger Cabin was built in 1900 and has been completely remodeled while maintaining its original charm. It can comfortably sleep 4 in the main home with the convertible daybed sectional on the 4 season porch. There is also a detached bunkhouse that features a full/twin bunk bed with storage, electricity, and propane heat.
Through the remodel, the foremost goal was to create a comfortable and cozy space that allows you to feel part of the woods. The furnishings are high end - RH chairs, Inside Weather Sofa, Purple 3 king mattress, and many hand made accent pieces. If you are looking for a break from a busy world, this is an oasis and what it was designed to be!
Other highlights:
- Privacy, this cabin is in a remote area of the National Forest.
- Easy access to Motorized Off Road Trails and hike/bike/horse only trails.
- Handmade and heated tile floors.
- Two person tub/shower.
- Gas stove in the master for warming the room on chilly mornings.
- Repurposed wood pulled from the original structure that dates back to the mid-1700's.
- Bright star views uninterrupted by man-made light.
- Large stone parking area with plenty of space for trailers.
WINTER ACCESS - We maintain Tinton Road through the winter. There can be a few inches of snow accumulation on the road between plowing. Due to this, we suggest guests have all-wheel/4-wheel drive.
Snowmobilers - Groomed trails are accessible directly from the cabin. No need to haul your sleds to a parking lot.
Guest access
This cabin is for those who want to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Black Hills.
