Guest Reviews:

- "Glenelg is a beautiful place and the house is situated in a very tranquil spot overlooking Skye. The upstairs of the house is beautiful, great set up, well equipped kitchen and lots of games and books for the family. Kay was great to deal with and very quick to reply which was appreciated. Highlights for us; Sea kayaking in Plockton Pony trekking in Glenshiel Mam Ratagan Also coming back to the beautiful house after a long walk was great- the fire stick in the telly worked really well as did the wifi. Only things I would highlight are we found the sliding doors downstairs difficult to open (some blinds do not stay up) and the bedroom level could maybe use a wee freshen up (some stains on carpet in ensuite etc). Just small things which didn’t spoil the stay at all but maybe things to do in quieter periods. We would definitely return though- it is a very special place."

The location so close to the shore & pier is excellent for anyone who likes to canoe, paddle board and swim. Also the canoes and paddle boards can be easily stored at the back of the house when not in use.
Tigh-na-Camus is an excellent location for Munro climbing as it is very close to Sqritheall which has a height of 974 metres, with its stunning views, as seen from some of the pictures.
When i was growing up Tigh-na-Camus was the police house in Glenelg. We added a large modern extension at the rear. This incorporates a bright spacious fully equipped and fitted kitchen with a traditional pine table for breakfast or informal meals. Also on the ground floor is the modern bathroom with a curved shower as well as a double bedroom with twin beds. There is also a lounge and a large dining room plus the added bonus of the sun room.
On the first floor are two double bedrooms both with spectacular views over the Sound of Sleat and the Isle of Skye.
There is also an upstairs toilet.
With its comfortable separate dining and living rooms, large modern kitchen plus the sun room, it is an excellent & surprisingly large house right next to the beach to appreciate the wonderful scenery right outside its door.
The large bright sun room at the front of the house is a wonderful place to sit and relax at any moment of the day; the spectacular view across the bay to the nearby Isle of Skye presents a breath-taking vista of unspoiled beauty and can be appreciated in all weathers and is a great favourite with visitors who can sit and wonder at the infinite beauty of Mother Nature.
Tigh-na-Camus sits in the middle of a large private enclosed garden. - "Having stayed in numerous self catering cottages over many years, this has to be one of the best that we have stayed in! The cottage is in amazing location with wonderful views of the Isle of Skye across the water. The cottage itself was amazing, it had everything that you would ever wish for and more. To add it is well maintained and spotlessly clean which is a credit to Myra the host, who kept very good communications with before, during and also after our stay. I would honestly recommend this property to anyone I know. Myra thank you and we will most definitely becoming back."

Guest Reviews:

- "This was a great stay in a lovely property. Just a few things for the owner to consider sent in the spirit of (hopefully) helpful feedback: - the double bedroom mattress's seemed quite thin compared to current standards. - the cooker was always on and therefore made the lounge quite hot when the sun was shining. We didn't use the cooker so not only an unnecessary cost to the owner but as an oil burning appliance not environmentally friendly either. - finally, although it didn't bother us some people may feel the quite personalised lounge left them feeling they were staying in someone else's space, rather than their own for the period; maybe a page on the family history and their long connection to the property would get round that. Overall a stunning location and comfortable home for our week (which was spent mainly visiting Skye)."

If you like hiking there are amazing trails right next to the cabin along a river that has some waterfalls. There are a couple of villages that are close by with great food options, if you don't feel like cooking in the well equipped kitchen. The hostess are very easy to work with and responded quickly to any questions I had. Would defiantly recommend and will look at staying again. "

Ravenswood Loft - Self Catering in Drumbuie
Apartment
Highland Council

We welcome you to Ravenswood Loft, our bright and well-equipped self catering flat in Drumbuie, Lochalsh. We are centrally placed for exploring the Lochalsh area, Skye and Wester Ross - an exquisite part of Scotland.

The space
Ravenswood Loft is situated next to our detached croft house at the rear of Drumbuie village.

Please note that Drumbuie is a crofting township and a five minute drive from the restaurants and shops of Kyle and Plockton.

Drumbuie is 3 miles from Kyle where you cross over the bridge to the Isle of Skye. Our proximity to other areas such as Glenelg & Arnisdale, Kintail, Applecross and Torridon makes Ravenswood Loft an excellent base for day excursions.

We provide a welcome pack which will have the provisions needed to make a cup of tea / coffee & cake and a light breakfast.

The flat benefits from underfloor heating in the entrance lobby and we ask all visitors to leave outdoor shoes at the bottom of the stairs. The flat is well appointed and should have all the equipment you need to rustle up a gourmet meal but if there is anything that you feel that we have missed out on, please let us know and we will act quickly to rectify this.

There are places to eat in both Plockton and Kyle, where you will find the Co-op supermarket and post office, banks, pharmacy and police station.

Guest access
Guests can drive into the shared parking area (we will ask you to use the same parking area for the duration of your stay).

Other things to note
Our Jack Russell, Angus, loves to welcome visitors by barking a hello! He will also try to catch the occasional helicopter and transatlantic plane but he hasn't yet succeeded.

I have Skye and Lochalsh Ordanance Survey maps if you would like to borrow them for your stay. Please just ask and I will leave them in the loft for you.

A traditional Highland home near Skye welcomes you
House
Highland Council

Bac na beàrn is a traditional old Highland home, stone built, slate roofed, with double glazing, good insulation and full central heating. It’s warm, comfortable, unfussy and relaxed. It's a great base to experience the seas, mountains & wildlife of this unique and outstandingly beautiful part of Scotland, including the Isle of Skye.

The space
Family house
With stunning views down the Sound of Sleat to the south west Bac na beàrn has an outstanding location. Just across Glenelg Bay is the Isle of Skye with the ferry crossing from Glenelg to Kylerhea around a mile from the house. To the south west there's the Skye areas of Isle Ornsay and Armadale and on the mainland Sandaig and the mouth of Loch Hourn.

Note the phrase “family house”. It’s not been tarted up with stuff like wet rooms or a pool to lounge by. You're in the Highlands, the sea is only a few hundred metres away and there's a decent-sized garden. There's an old and now deceased Rayburn in the kitchen which needs to be removed. Some painting needs redoing and freshening.

In short, if you’re looking for an aseptic, soulless, tarted up and squeaky clean holiday unit with fully matching cutlery then this is not for you. But if the character and feel and history of a house appeals to you you’ll enjoy being part of that here. Centenarian plus though she now is, Bac na beàrn is a living family holiday home, comfortably part of the natural landscape. Not perfect, but then who is?

The space
Stand in the garden of Bac na beàrn on a bright, clear day and you'll see for miles down the Sound of Sleat, past the coast of Skye and on to Eigg and beyond, the many small islands shadowed in the sun-sparkled water. Just round the first headland to your left is Sandaig, called Camus feàrna (Bay of the Alders) by Gavin Maxwell in his book of his life there with his otters, "Ring of Bright Water".

Then there’s the serene calm of Glenelg, silence broken by the whoops and skirling of sea birds, by the splash of a fish, an otter or seal, or the scutter of some animal – a pine marten at dusk, perhaps - through the bracken, by the friendly greeting of a stranger passing on the road – but never by roar of traffic or razored by sirens.

On occasion, of course, the wind beating up the Sound may sting the rain horizontally into your face. Being out in a Highland storm, though, is excitingly different from the sodden misery of rain in the city. Here you have scents of bog myrtle and heather, damp peat and salt spray, spume and seaweed, natural aromatherapy bringing you fully alive while calming and relaxing you also. Raw nature, such as you'll find in the west Highlands, has this effect.

You’ll want, then, a home from home, a place to return to, shrugging your rain jacket to the floor as you enter, your boots tumbled in the scullery, padding through with a hot drink to the double-glazed warmth of the sitting room to watch the sea and the wind arguing over the scurrying white horses below. As a very satisfied guest remarked "Don't think Hilton, think old aunt Hilda's farmhouse and you'll be fine!"

Facilities
There are four bedrooms, two double, one with ziplock divan beds, and a single, thereby sleeping up to seven. There’s a cot. There’s a comfortable sitting room with non-matching furniture and a carpet which we’ll get round to replacing when we find a suitable one. There’s a modestly-sized flat screen TV running from a satellite dish (non-subscription, equivalent to Freeview in its range) and a DVD player. In the cupboard there’s any number of DVDs, including some incredibly tacky titles, and plenty of board games and some outdoor ones. There’s bookcases with a miscellaneous range of fiction and non-fiction titles and a number of books, booklets, pamphlets, leaflets and maps relevant to the immediate area and, more generally, the the west Highlands and beyond. These are all for you to use if you wish.

There’s much handsome pine panelling throughout the house, some of it a bit chewed, this panelling on almost the entire surface of the bathroom where you’ll also find an ancient cast iron bath with its original ingenious pillar plug, deep and where almost anyone will be able to lie full length, a glass of whisky comfortably within reach. Even whiskey, if you prefer. A quaich isn’t mandatory. There’s currently only one lavatory.

The dining room complements the living room, shares the wonderful light and view down the Sound of Sleat and to Skye (as do two bedrooms above), and is light and airy – the latter perhaps partly on account of the gaps between the floor and the skirting board in places, an issue next in line to be addressed when things are quieter. There’s a handsome Victorian oak table and matching mirrored sideboard and six chairs so that in parties of seven each member can take turns over a week to act as butler. The matching Edwardian chairs are upholstered in golden velvet and designed to accommodate a range of bottom characteristics, the seats being a mix of convex, flat and concave, the last a webbing-related matter.

The lower middle drawer in the dining room sideboard holds stationery and related items - feel free to use what you need from there. There's also a folder holding instruction or other manuals for various appliances should you find yourself bemused by some device.

If you prefer to eat in the kitchen next door, there’s a long, plain refectory-style oiled yew table, again with seating for six or more. Of course there’s plenty of crockery, a quantity of miscellaneous glasses, pans and cutlery and plenty of those items and devices beloved of chefs manqués such as fridge freezer, ceramic-hobbed cooker with two ovens, food processor, slow cooker, kettle and toaster, teapots and cafetières, a Bialetti as well, and so on. There’s even a mandolin, risking you slicing the tip of a finger incautiously, and a microplane to allow you to remove part of a knuckle while getting at the last bit of parmesan.

In the kitchen there’s a press, a free-standing cupboard, which holds dry goods – salts, peppers, spices, vinegars, oils, flour, rolled oats, oatmeal and other grains and pulses, teas of various kinds, perhaps cocoa, ovaltine and the like, maybe some marmalade, jams, pickles or chutneys and miscellaneous tins of things like tomatoes and baked beans. There’s a plethora of pasta of various kinds. This is intended as a kind of rolling larder for anyone to use and pass on rather than throwing perfectly good food out needlessly. Use these items as you need to, simply replacing for later guests any items that run out or that you use excessively.

There is no dishwasher other than yourselves but there’s a decent two-drainer sink, J-cloths, Brillo pads and a mop, and Ecover washing up liquid to go with them. The heart of the house’s heat is outside, a powerful and efficient oil-fired condensing boiler driving the 13 radiators scattered around the house as well as the capacious and efficient hot water system. There's decent community wireless broadband connection typically offering upwards of 20Mbps download speed and some 2.2-2.9Mbps upload. This is capped at about 23GB per week although a further 50GB can be had for £10.00 if prebooked and prepaid.

There's cleaning materials, brushes and cloths in the scullery and there's an automatic washing machine and a tumble dryer in the utility room next door as well as a couple of vacuum cleaners elsewhere in the house. As environmental concerns are increasingly important there are supplies of ecological materials for washing, washing up and cleaning; please use these rather than bringing in others. If you need to refill these then you'll find further supplies in the open dining room cupboard.

It's a family holiday home, not a sterile house for transient visitors, and so you'll find it has most of what you'd expect to find in a place such as this which you'd want to treat as your own home for the period you're visiting. Let me know, of course, if you feel there's anything missing which should be added.

Guest access
The whole house is available for you to use. That's four bedrooms, bathroom, living room, dining room, kitchen and scullery and, of course, the fenced garden of around a seventh of an acre.

It's a family holiday home, not a sterile house for transient visitors, and so you'll find it has most of what you'd expect to find in a place such as this which you'd want to treat as your own home for the period you're visiting.

Other things to note
Check-in is shown as Saturdays only and with a seven day minimum visit. This is because we'd like to have visitors, perhaps on family holidays, getting to know Glenelg and its wider surroundings such as Skye and Kintail rather than just rushing through. We also prefer bookings to be in multiples of weeks, so Saturday to Saturday, this because otherwise it gets complex and we risk having too many gaps, something which would increase costs and, hence, letting fees. However, we're prepared to consider variations on this, particularly during the quieter periods over the winter. Just ask! And if, in doing so, you'd like us to block off the period for a short time till we and you can confirm then that's fine too. Unfortunately AirBnB's bookings structure is a bit primitive and seems unable to cope with that kind of variant so although you can apparently book straight away we may need to discuss matters further before confirming with certainty.

Linen - in the form of an undersheet to each bed, duvet covers and pillowcases as well as bathmats and towels are provided for you to use at no extra charge. You'll find these, ready to fit on the beds you want to use, in the cupboard at the foot of the stairs. There are duvets and two pillows per person on all the beds and extra blankets and pillows available should you need them.

Please put any used house linen or towels into the the laundry basket in the utility room as you leave. It's very helpful also if you can put one load into the washing machine and set it going before you leave - it helps the cleaners fit everything in in time and they can thereby quickly empty the machine when they arrive and continue with another load. Please wash and put away any utensils, sweep and vacuum as necessary, and generally leave the house as you’d want to find it on arriving. Leave the radiators as you found them but please make sure that the immersion heater is off. Please leave the back door unlocked with the keys hanging on the key-board as you found them. Thanks.

Bac na beàrn is an ordinary self-catering holiday home in a very rural location rather than a city or resort hotel and is primarily for family holidays. This inevitably brings in issues peculiar to such localities, typically around rapid availability of specialist services when needed. We also want to avoid overloading the cleaners in the relatively short time available on Saturday change-overs, hence the request to make sure that the house is reasonably clean when you leave. If that’s a problem for any reason then please let me know ahead and I’ll arrange for complete cleaning using more than two cleaners at a supplementary charge of £50.00.
