Welcome to Morton House a True Yorkshire Retreat in Masham...
Morton House is a grade II listed stone farmhouse just off the market square in the picturesque market town of Masham. The accommodation is within easy walking distance of all amenities, pubs, shops and of course Masham’s famous breweries – The Black Sheep and Theakstons.
Morton House has been totally renovated retaining much of the charm and features you would expect including exposed beams, open fireplace, fantastic loft master suite and farmhouse style kitchen/diner. The rear (shared) garden is fully fenced, private and sunny (when the sun shines!) There is parking at the door on the street. The house is centrally heated throughout and available all year.
The property has 4brms - the very large master suite in the loft with a king size bed and additional single day bed has an ensuite bathroom. On the first floor at the front of the property there is a superking 'Gold' bedroom and a double bedroom which share the house bathroom. At the rear on this level is the twin bedroom with an ensuite shower room. All bedrooms have comfy mattresses and cosy cotton bed linens and pillows/duvet (no feather pillows).
On the ground floor there are two sitting rooms to the front of the property - the more formal 'Green' room with Chesterfield sofas and open fire place, and the cosy TV room with wood burning stove and comfy sofas. There is a large flat screen TV with SKY movies and sports and a games console. Also a games box with board games and books.
At the rear of the property move through the lobby to the large farmhouse style kitchen and dining area which has a door out to the shared courtyard garden. You will find the kitchen fully kitted with utensils to cook up a storm and all the usual gadgets - large range style cooker and double oven, dishwasher, microwave, under bench larder fridges etc. There is an American style fridge/freezer in the shared utility area along with a downstairs loo, washing machine and tumble dryer.
The town of Masham is superbly placed for walking and visiting local attractions. A market has been held here since 1393 when a charter was granted by Richard II and the town subsequently thrived due to the easy access of the flocks from nearby Fountains and Jervaulx Abbeys. It still hosts a market every Wednesday and Saturday, and there are plenty of welcoming pubs and delightful tearooms.
Morton House can be rented on its own or in conjunction with ‘The Stable Block’, therefore able to sleep up to 16 persons in 7 bedrooms.

With a traditional and homely interior, Green Willow has a spacious and comfortable living room. To the rear of the downstairs space is where you’ll find the open-plan kitchen-diner. Light and spacious, River View has an open plan kitchen diner with large doors opening out onto the patio. Fully equipped, the kitchen has modern appliances and cookware. It is the perfect place to socialise with your loved ones while you prepare and enjoy meals.
Step outside and you’ll find a secure back garden. This includes a delightful sun terrace with outdoor seating so you can eat alfresco style during your stay. The property also has a bike store for up to five bikes - please note locks aren’t provided.
The living area includes two comfy sofas, an armchair, a wood burner and a flat screen TV with Netflix and Amazon prime available so you can retreat here to enjoy a cosy night in.

Masham is a bustling market town on the River Ure at the foot of Wensleydale - one of the best known and most striking of the Yorkshire Dales in the heart of North Yorkshire. It is home to two family owned breweries, Theakstons and Black Sheep, both of which offer brewery tours. Visit the wonderful market on the square every Wednesday and Saturday selling local produce, or sample a bite to eat at one of the local inns or tea rooms. Delve into the world of artisan craftsmanship at The Creative Masham Centre, enjoy scenic walks along the River Ure or, for a day out of the town, Fountains Abbey, Brimham Rocks and Newby Hall can all be reached within 14 miles.

A two storey stone building which has been converted into apartments with the ground floor apartment known as Brewers Den, so called because it was here that the Theakston's Brewery first stored their casks of ale in the vaulted cellars beneath.

The Old Vet’s House has been newly renovated and interior designed to a very high standard providing a wonderful three bedroomed holiday home with hot tub in the heart of Masham

Crab apple holiday cottage is a cosy three bedroomed, detached self catering holiday home situated in the pretty market town of Masham in the Yorkshire Dales.
The cottage has a contemporary interior whilst still retaining charming features such as a log burner, making it a homely and comfortable place to stay.

The space
Our homely holiday cottage is situated just behind Masham Market Place, putting you and your guests at an ideal stone's throw away from all the fantastic features Masham has to offer.
Inside Crab apple cottage you will find a contemporary setting which softly compliments the original features of the property. You enter through the front door with a utility and toilet/shower room on your left. A door on your right leads you into our cosy snug, a perfect place to hide with a book and enjoy the warmth from the log burner. Pass through here and into the sitting room, also featuring a log burner. A great place to relax with friends and family as at the far end of the sitting room you will find the open plan fully furnished modern kitchen with dining table.
On the first floor we have 1 x king bedroom with wardrobe, 1 x double bedroom with hanging rail and shelf, and 1 x single bedroom with hanging rail and shelf. All three rooms have drawer space. Nestled between the bedrooms is the family bathroom.
There is a private patio and small grassed area at the side of the cottage, a lovely peaceful sitting area for the warmer months. The garden also features a lockable outbuilding which provides ideal storage for bikes etc.
Private parking for two vehicles is available at the front of the property.
Crab apple holiday Cottage is available all year round, with a minimum of a 4 night stay. Check in from 15:00.

Dairy Cottage is a lovely 2 bedroom cottage in Masham, in the heart of Lower Wensleydale, which has been newly renovated to a high standard with pretty furnishings and modern interiors. There are 2 double bedrooms: one twin room and the other can be made up as a king or 2 singles. There is parking directly outside the cottage and the cottage is perfectly situated within walking distance of the traditional Market Square with shops, pubs, cafes, butchers, supermarket and shops.
The space
The bright open plan living area and kitchen are stylishly furnished, with two very comfortable sofas, wall mounted Smart television, dining table and shaker kitchen with dishwasher and washing machine. Wifi is available.
The stairs lead off this area up to a luxurious shower room, a twin bedroom at the rear of the property and a king size room at the front, which can be made into a twin bed to the front.
The cottage has a dedicated parking space in front of the property. The White Bear Hotel is next door and The Black Sheep Brewery is 3 minutes walk away.

The Grade 2 listed Old Library, Masham sits on the corner of the principle approach in to the Market Square from Swinton. Built in 1856 it originally served as the Mechanic Institute of then Mashamshire. It was designed by the respected William Perkin of Perkin and Backhouse of Leeds in Victorian Italianate style. In 2017-18 its internal was redesigned and fully refurbished by Langton Holdings Ltd.

The space
Offering a fully bespoke handmade kitchen with granite toped 2.8m long island the former Lecture Hall has been recreated to form one of the most exciting examples of open plan living in Yorkshire. The kitchen has everything you would expect, range oven, dual sinks, dishwasher, washer, if fully lit under and over counter and in units, is all handmade from solid wood. The room has the historic A-frames spot lit as well as 3 chandlers. There is a Yamaha and Cambridge audio sound system and 60 inch smart TV. The dining table seats 10. There is sofa seating for 9 with coffee table. There is an effect log burner in traditional fire place in the lounge area.
In addition to this 924 sq ft open plan space two bedroom suits offer the following:
Master bedroom offers king bed, handmade furniture, interlined curtains luxury carpets over 11mm underlay, beds are made up with Hungarian down duvets and good quality linens. It then has a private corridor to master bathroom, featuring role top bath, twin Victorian basins, toilet with high level cistern, under floor heating, large 1600 x 900 dual head shower and, the best bit, lit by a 15 arm Crystal Chandelier.
The second bedroom has pineapple theme wallpaper with matching lamps and chandelier. Handmade furniture offers blanket box, wardrobe, bedside tables as well as King size bed and handmade fitted blinds. Linens are again minimum 400tc and duvets are down. The en-suit offers large dual head shower, heated towel rail, fully tiled, heated towel rail as well and traditional WC and basin.

Former mechanics' institute designed by William Perkin opened in 1856. Included a large lecture hall, reading room and classrooms as well as domestic accommodation for a librarian.
Reasons for Designation
The former Masham Mechanics' Institute is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Social history: as a relatively early example of a bespoke building for a mechanics' institute serving a small rural market town; * Architecture: a good, relatively well preserved example of a mid-C19 architect-designed institute building employing Italianate detailing; * Interior: the first-floor lecture hall and the good survival of interior features in the rear west range are both notable.
History
Masham's Mechanics' Institute was founded in 1848, the local vicar, Reverend Thomas Riddle, being the first president until his death in 1855. A purpose-built building was erected as a memorial to Riddle, funded by public subscription and supported by local gentry, built on land donated by Trinity College Cambridge. The opening of the Riddle Memorial Mechanics' Institute was reported in the London Illustrated News of 15 November 1856. This report described the building as being Italian in style and noted that the ground floor had a spacious vestibule and staircase, large reading room, class-rooms and rooms for the librarian, and that the first floor had a lofty, spacious lecture room, ante-room, committee room and librarian's bedroom. The architect was William Perkin of Perkin and Backhouse of Leeds.
Although the building appears to have been built in two phases (the north-eastern corner appearing to be an extension), the London Illustrated News report suggests that this addition had been constructed when the building was formally opened. The building is certainly depicted as being complete on the first edition 1:2500 map of 1892. Some time before 1975 the building was divided internally to convert the ground floor into a bank, providing a separate entrance to the side linked to the staircase, with the first-floor lecture room being used as a public library. Use as a bank and library ceased in 2012.
Details
Former mechanics' institute, 1856 by William Perkin of Perkin and Backhouse of Leeds. Victorian Italianate style.
MATERIALS: coursed limestone with sandstone dressings.
PLAN: the principal range is orientated parallel to the street frontage with a domestic range at right angles to the rear, west. To the rear east and centre there is a parallel range to the front range: the eastern half appearing as a two storey single room extension, that to the centre forming the stair hall.
EXTERIOR front, south: this is symmetrical, being of two storeys and three bays with a central entrance. Windows have paired lights set within sandstone surrounds that include aprons. The first floor windows are tall, round-headed sliding sashes, each sash divided into four panes with glazing bars. The ground floor windows are segmentally headed with keystones and have replacement sashes (possibly late C19) with plate glass lower sashes and smaller upper sashes which are divided into two panes. The central entrance has a stone doorcase including a projecting cornice supported by paired stone consoles. The part glazed door is hardwood and probably late C20. The elevation is quoined, and has a plinth, storey band and cornice. The cornice is supported by shaped stone consoles and in-turn supports a plain parapet. Centrally placed, rising above the parapet is an 1856 date stone. The end stacks shown in the London Illustrated News illustration have been lost.
West elevation: the gable end of the front range is coped, the coping projecting in the form of an open pediment. The elevation is also quoined, and has a plinth and storey band. It has four openings with stone sills and keystoned lintels, round headed to the first floor, flat with segmental soffits to the ground floor. Three of the openings are blind (and were shown as blind in 1856). The ground floor northern window has been converted into a doorway. The west elevation of the rear range is more domestic in appearance and is of two bays and two storeys, the upper floor being slightly lower than that of the front range. This has four windows with stone sills and keystoned lintels, the windows being six over six hornless sashes, excepting the northern ground floor window which has been altered. The gable end retains its ridge stack.
East elevation: the gable end of the front range is similarly detailed to the west gable except that it has centrally placed windows to both ground and first floors which match those of the front elevation. The gable end of the rear range is lower and has a first floor window matching that of the domestic part of the west elevation. The ground floor window was probably originally similar, but has been altered with a raised sill.
North elevation: This is blind except for a round arched stair window to the centre which retains a 6-over 6 sash window. Below there is a blocked door to the rear yard. Extending eastwards from the north gable of the domestic range there is a row of stone built outbuildings.
INTERIOR: the first floor of the front range is a single room, originally the lecture hall, and features a pair of decorated roof trusses. The staircase up to the hall retains decorative cast iron balusters, the stair hall being separated from the bank on the ground floor by an inserted masonry wall. Cornicing to the ground floor suggests that only one internal wall was removed for the conversion into a bank. The conversion also entailed the insertion of a vault into the rear east room (probably formerly a class room). The rear west range retains panelled interior doors and other joinery, as well as its fireplaces complete with cast iron surrounds and is thought to have been mainly domestic accommodation for the librarian.

This Grade 2 listed building stood empty for over 10 years before being converted by Langton Holdings Ltd of Leeds. The 5 month seven figure refurbishment even included the removal of the Old Vault from the bank!

The Bank is accessed to the front of the building with just one step up to a large front door where you access the large open plan living space.
The kitchen is a handmade solid wood kitchen with a mix of granite and wood on the worktops, there is a double sink and also a dishwasher as well as a large range gas over with hob.
The master bedroom is a King with en-suit the second bedroom a twin with use of the house bathroom and the final bedroom is a double with en suite.
There is a sofa bed in the lounge if required to sleep 8 however re recommend this property for 6 people ideally!
The corridors are large with access to a small back yard which has some furniture and a BBQ.

The space
2 Dairy cottage is quaint & quirky with many original old dairy features. Its courtyard position, close to the White Bear Hotel, means its well away from the main road but a short walk from all of Masham facilities. It has private parking in front of the cottage for one car. The main entrance is up five steps to the front door from the parking area and there is a hand rail on the left. The main entrance opens into the lounge as well as giving access to the stairs. The bathroom is at the top of the stairs and both bedrooms are accessed from the landing. There is a traditional clothes airer that hangs over the stairs. It can be lowered and hoisted using the pulley ropes on the landing if required.
The dining kitchen is accessible through the lounge with a table and four chairs that can be extended if required. The floor is engineered oak and the room is lit with downlight. The kitchen worktop has under lighting. It is fully equipped with dishwasher, microwave, kettle, toaster, fridge freezer built in cooker and ceramic hob, extractor fan and light. There is a washing machine, iron and ironing board.
The lounge decor with old beams provides the cottage ambience. A log burning stove with a few extra logs stored for a warm and cosy night in, snuggled up for an evening of using a smart television or to just chill at the sounds of the old record player.
Upstairs you will find a bathroom that has a bath with overhead shower, heated flooring and a warm towel rail. There is a mirrored bathroom cabinet with light above it and a shaver point to the left of the sink. The floor surface is non slip ceramic tiles with underfloor heating. Towels are also provided for each guest. There is a double room with a luxurious double bed, lamps, wardrobe, hairdryer and straighteners. The double bed is accessible from both sides.
In the second bedroom there is a small double luxurious bed with hanging rail and chest of drawers. The small double bed is accessible from one side. All bedding is non feather pillows and duvets.
Heating is throughout. There are extra logs stored behind the settee, firelighters and matches, these can also be purchased locally if you desire more.
As part of Wellgarth Court adjacent to the cottage is the White Bear Pub which sells high quality food and good local beer.
There is a garage about 50m away that sells fuel and basic provisions.
Masham market place is about 200metres away along with numerous shops including the Post Office, restaurants, pubs, fish and chip shop, butchers, green grocers, cooperative store, newsagents, galleries, gift shops and cafes.
Masham has two Breweries both Black Sheep and Theakston's with visitor centres. The Black sheep Brewery to the rear also has a great bar and bistro. 2 Dairy cottages has both a stunning selection of real ales and great food on your doorstep!

Parking in Masham is free although there is an honesty box in the Market Place.

It sleeps a maximum 4 people in two bedrooms (1 king size; 1 superking or 2 x singles), is fully equipped for holiday use and rated 4-star by Visit England. It enjoys it's own parking and attached garage, and looks over open spaces towards the River Ure at the front and the Black Sheep Brewery to the rear.

This charming and spacious Georgian cottage spans four floors and offers stunning elevated views over the River Ure. While the mature trees have partially obscured the river view over the years, the landscape remains breathtaking.
Stepping inside, you're greeted by a bright hallway that leads to the generous living room. Here, you can unwind with a lovely view of the rear garden, enjoying the comfort of plush sofas, a Smart TV, and a cozy wood burner. Whether you're sipping a glass of wine or a comforting cup of tea, it's the perfect setting to relax after a day exploring the amazing places North Yorkshire has to offer!
Venture downstairs to the lower ground floor, where a fully equipped kitchen awaits, complete with integrated appliances, a Nespresso Coffee Machine, and the warmth of underfloor heating. French doors open out to the private rear garden, inviting the morning sun. The spacious dining area, which seats up to six guests, is ideal for planning your day's adventures over breakfast or enjoying an evening meal together while reminiscing about the day's experiences.
Step outside into the serene garden, where an outdoor table and seating area create the perfect spot for morning coffee, alfresco dining, or a BBQ whilst simply soaking up the tranquility of the area. For our cycling enthusiasts, there is secure storage for bikes. The enclosed garden is also a safe for children and pets, making it perfect for families with four-legged companions.
The main bathroom is located on the lower ground floor. Although it may not be ideal for guests who prefer to avoid stairs, it features a modern vanity sink, a bathtub with a shower, and comes with fresh white towels and complimentary toiletries, including handwash, body wash, and shampoo—whether you're in the mood for a quick shower or a long soak.
As you make your way up the stairs from the hallway, you’ll find two inviting bedrooms and a WC. The master bedroom boasts a comfortable king-size bed, while the second bedroom offers twin beds, however both rooms can be arranged as king sized doubles or twin upon request. Continue up to the second floor to discover the third bedroom, complete with a double bed and stunning views.

The Former Mechanics institute in Masham is a grade 2 listed building stepped in history. The building was Mashamshires Lecture hall from 1856 until until the 1950's when it became the Town Library and the Midland Bank.
The main advantage of this building is that the former Lecture hall / Library room remains intact and there perfect place for people to drink and dine. The dining table seats 12!
