- "Good friendly staff , good food" - "This place deserves more than an excellent rating if that were possible. The rooms, the food , the welcome, we had such a laugh with the head bar lady/waitress and the young blond girl! We were a party of 6 and a dog, and stayed 2 nights. Nothing was to much bother. Would return definitely. If I have to find a fault get new pillows in all rooms, very hard, flat and lumpy." - "My Daughter in Law and 2 Grandsons stayed overnight at The Grove Arms at half term . the family room was immaculate and the staff very friendly and welcoming . Also the Breakfast was amazing . Will return again soon ."

- "My daughter and her friend rented this fantastic cottage for a 3 night break to celebrate end of their exams. Sue has been so helpful through the booking process, even when we had to amend the dates. Easter cottage was really clean and had everything the girls needed - the cookies left there were very nice too! The living room was a great place to relax and the beds really comfortable for a great night's sleep. Shaftesbury is a nice place to visit with lots of independent shops and nice places to eat. The local Italian restaurant was really good and well recommended. I am hoping to book a stay soon at Easter Cottage as it just provided everything for a nice break away."

There are lots of things to see and do (walking, Shaftesbury, Old Wardour Castle, etc.) but just staying put is a treat. The cottage is very peaceful and comfortable, and the kitchen is fully equipped. There is also a small library of some fiction and local history books and lots of maps. On clear nights you have a fantastic views of stars, as this is located in a Dark Sky conservation area. Bring your binos! The outdoor living area is just as beautiful with pots of colourful flowers and plants. There is a garden table and chairs, BBQ, and on the veranda a sofa. Stanley, one of the two cats, might honour you with a visit. He is very curious and friendly. Lois is the shy one. In bad weather, curling up on the sofa with a book, mug of tea and slice of cake is just perfect. We received a wonderfully warm welcome from the delightful hosts. Set right in the heart of Dorset’s most beautiful town Shaftesbury is 22 Bell St – a glorious thatched cottage which accommodates 4/5 guests.
The cottage has a large living room with inglenook fireplace, kitchen, dining room, a lovely garden and patio eating area, writing room, 2 bedrooms, bathroom and ground floor WC.
The entrance of 22 Bell St takes you to a small hallway from which you can go upstairs or into the living room which has a beautiful fireplace with woodburner and seating for up to 5 guests.
There is a family kitchen, dining room and WC on the ground floor. French doors in the dining room open out into a pretty garden with lawned area, terrace and a romantic summer house which is perfect for reading, studying or to spend a few quiet minutes having a nap in the armchair.
The property has a characterful winding staircase (this is not suitable for young children, the elderly or for those less mobile) which takes you up to a double bedroom and bathroom with bath and shower. Please be aware that this is extremely steep and quite tricky to negotiate.
On the second floor is a bright and spacious bedroom under the eaves which has a double bed. There is an extra mattress if guests need to sleep another person or if children prefer to sleep in separate beds (additional charge £25 for the weekend/£50 per week).
Well behaved dogs are welcome but they are not allowed on the furniture, upstairs or to be left unattended at the property. There is a charge of £27.50 per dog for stays up to 7 days and £27.50 for each subsequent week.
There is no private parking at the cottage but there is 1 hour parking almost opposite the cottage and there is a car park about 2 minutes’ walk down the road in Bell St. If you prefer to park for free there is limited unrestricted parking at the far end of Bell St or there is a free car park at Barton Hill Car Park (about 5 minutes walk from the house).
There are numerous shops and cafes to be explored in this vibrant town. Shaftesbury’s Gold Hill was the location for the iconic Hovis advertisement and it is a treat to walk up or sit at the café at the top of the hill enjoying the quaint houses that line the street and the fabulous countryside beyond. There is also a Lido two minutes’ walk down Bell St which the kids will love!
Please note that guests need to bring all household items such as toilet roll (although there is some left for arrival!), firewood, washing up liquid and all provisions for your stay.
Nearby attractions are Stonehenge, the glorious house and gardens of Stourhead, Sherborne Castle, the art gallery, restaurant and farm shop at Hauser & Wirth, The Newt gardens and restaurant and Haynes Motor Museum in Somerset. Bath is about a one hour drive, as is the beach. Cheddar Gorge and Go Ape at Moors Valley country park and forest are also within easy striking distance.
There are glorious walks almost from the door but you do have all the benefits of staying in a vibrant town where you don't need to even get into the car during your stay: there are wonderful shops, the theatre, cosy pubs and restaurants, supermarkets nearby and just a 10 minute drive to the local train station in Gillingham.
- "Smashing" - "Great property in a great location. As it was in the centre of Shaftesbury every thing was in a short walking distance. A property with typical heritage aspects, uneven floors, small staircase and low ceilings which all added to the charm. One has to go expecting some compromises in terms of space and modern convenience but nothing was unbearable. The dining room opening onto the rear garden path which led to the small lawn area, slightly disconnected from the house. There was plenty of hot water, heating and the wifi worked in most parts of the property. Improvement points would be a better equipped kitchen for self catering and a little more of the household consumables like dishwasher tabs, toilet paper and washing up liquid."

It was an iconic Hovis advert that baked the image of Gold Hill, a romantic cobbled street in Dorset, into the country’s collective imagination. But the people of Shaftesbury have been enjoying the view here for centuries. And, two miles south of town, almost within view from that fabled street, there’s now a glamping site that bears the same name. It too boasts classic country views – the meadow sloping westwards to take in the best of the evening light – and, despite being new, has a similarly timeless, picture-perfect feel.
There are just two bell tents at Gold Hill Glamping in total, despite a spacious three acres of meadow to fill. The result is ample space for everyone and even an additional, fenced-off area for equestrians who wish to holiday with their horse. Glampers can choose from the traditional bell tent structure or the bulbous ‘lotus belle’ tent, which looks similar but bulges outwards in the middle like an oversized pudding to provide extra space.
Each tent has a comfortable double bed and soft furnishings, with futons that you can convert into extra beds for children if you don’t mind bringing along their bedding. Outside, meanwhile, there’s a picnic bench, a campfire pit and a well-equipped kitchen shelter. And, while there are flushing loos and hot showers back by the farmhouse a hundred yards or so away, there’s also an additional composting loo closer to hand in the field.
Despite the comforts, Gold Hill Glamping is still suitably rustic. There’s no electricity and, though there are lanterns, campfires are the go-to form of evening light. The place remains very much a working farm too. There are ponies to pat and you can watch the cows being milked if you chat eagerly enough to farmers Clea and Jonathan. A neighbouring stretch of woodland was also once a forest school and today is left as a secret discovery spot for family glampers, with rope swings hanging from branches, fairy doors hidden among tree trunks and a stream to splash in.
If you find the time to head elsewhere, there are footpaths aplenty to roam, taking in Mlebury Hill, Compton Abbas and Fontmell Down (stopping at the good pub in Fontmell Magna). Or walk back north to Shaftsebury, finishing with the steep stroll up Gold Hill and maybe even buying a fresh loaf of bread at the end.

Gold Hill is the jewel in the crown of Shaftesbury, known for the nation's favourite ‘Hovis Bread TV’ advert. The iconic street is lined with chocolate box cottages and there are stunning views across rolling green pastureland, likely to have been the inspiration behind some of the author, Thomas Hardy's, great works. The eclectic town centre offers a great selection of independent shops and eateries as well as a regular Thursday market and a vibrant events scene, including food and fringe festivals. For those wishing to explore the Saxon roots of the area, the town museum and abbey ruins are well worth a visit and you can stop off at Barton Hill and Park Walk, which really make the most of this wonderful elevated position. Further afield are Longleat House and safari park, Stourhead House and gardens, Haynes motor museum, the cathedral cities of Salisbury and Bath, and the Kennet and Avon canal, all great choices for a day out and within 30 miles.
Set in a truly special location on Shaftesbury’s much photographed Gold Hill, this Grade II listed, lovingly restored terraced cottage is accessed via a doorway from the cobbled street, which is known for its steep incline and fabulous views. Built with Shaftesbury Abbey stone following its dissolution, a painstaking renovation was completed in 2024 and is evident from the moment you enter the inviting lounge/diner. Exposed stonework, beams, subtle Farrow and Ball paint colours and a fireplace with wood burning stove all come together to create a warm and homely ambience. There is room to dine in comfort as well as thoughtfully arranged furniture, dressed with care in Susie Watson fabrics. Enjoy your favourite shows on the Smart TV or simply relax and unwind in historic surroundings. Take the steps down into the kitchen at the rear, where hand-built units have been sympathetically chosen to blend character with modern conveniences. Heading back into the lounge you will find a door leading into an inner vestibule, with the shower room to the left. Cleverly designed to maximise space, a bi-fold door leads into the room, which has a stylish shower set against the rear wall and more beautiful natural materials to be admired. Head up the winding cottage style stairs to the first floor. Immediately right is the door to a charming single bedroom with day bed, a view over the street below, and a quirky opening above the stairs. A curtain provides privacy and this room would also make a wonderful reading nook. Just next door is the king-size bedroom, which is dual aspect and the perfect spot to retire to after a day spent exploring. Again, the furnishings have been chosen with the utmost care and attention, from the vintage bed frame to the 7000-pocket sprung mattress. When the day is done snuggle up in goose feather and down bedding, all naturally non-allergenic with natural allergen properties which is encased in sumptuous linens. The rear window provides a captivating view over the slopes of the town and surrounding verdant hills. Due to the age of the property there are changes of level, steps and some areas of restricted head height, including low doorways, which only adds to its character and charm.
From the kitchen, steps lead down into the courtyard garden. A true oasis in this town centre location, old walls and clever fencing create a high degree of seclusion and tranquillity. Take a seat with your morning coffee and open the shutters to admire the most wonderful framed view of the Blackmore Vale beyond.

It was just what it appeared to be online, or perhaps better. The views were magnificent. The countryside is beautiful and inviting. We took all the walks Tessa recommended, often ending up at a pub nearby. What fun! The local food is exceptional, often from local farms, prepared with imagination. The house was so welcoming. Spotlessly clean and decorated with a designers eye. It was bright and cheerful and warm. The two kingsize beds and their luxurious linens were a delicious treat. Loved the laundry room! Every detail was thought of. We thank you for the computer and excellent wi-fi. A nice touch! We would return in a heartbeat!"

The studio is at one end of the annex. In the living area there is room to eat, read , watch a film and plan your next walk. The bedroom is cosy - super-king bed, quality pillows and sheets - and the shower is hot and pretty powerful.
The village has it all - church, school, village shop, village green, pub and lovely people. Be careful - you may want to move here permanently!
The space
The sitting room has a sofa, table with chairs, a large TV and a DVD player with a selection of classic films ..... there is no actual TV signal but if you are desperate the 4G signal is very good! There is a fridge, microwave, toaster and kettle (plus cutlery , plates and glasses) but no hob or oven.
The bedroom is cosy. There is a chest of drawers and hangers and hooks for clothes, plus an electric blanket if needed
The shower is great but the basin in the bathroom has cold water only at the moment.
Guest access
The studio has a sitting room then a step down to the bedroom and shower room. It's all yours!
Other things to note
You enter the studio via the pottery - don't worry, this will be unoccupied for the duration of your stay. The village is lovely and so is everywhere you walk.
Easy accessible North Dorset house. Minutes walk to the town centre and quiet in the evenings. Perfect for a visit or for a stopover.

St. James's Street runs along the bottom of historic Gold Hill with the saxon Abbey ruins at the top of the hill. Number 25 is a mid-terrace cottage which dates from the early 1600's, full of character and original features. Town amenities are a short - but steep! - walk away. Great walking area. The cottage is ideally situated for exploring Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset as the boundary for all 3 counties meet just outside Shaftesbury.
The space
You are welcome to our home which dates back more than 400 years in this lovely conservation area - apparently it used to be the fishmonger's home, and what is now our living room was the horse's stable. This is our home and we are delighted to share it, for those wanting a home away from home experience. So the cottage is full of our pictures, and books. You will find this is a great area for walking and we are keen on circular walks which include a pub! Because the cottage is so old its walls are wonky and the ceilings variable - PLEASE mind your heads on the stairs, and upstairs at the far end of the landing as you enter the double bedroom as the door frame is lower than elsewhere and can catch you off guard with a nasty bump if you are over 175cm tall.
Guest access
There are 3 bedrooms available for guests - 2 doubles and 1 single. The bathroom is just along the landing and offers a bath as well as walk in shower with an additional loo downstairs.
Put your feet up in our cosy living room with its woodburner stove. Although there is no TV, there is free wifi and a selection of books and games available to make use of. The kitchen is where we spend most of our time when we are here so you will find it well supplied with a variety of home produced herbal teas and wide range of spices and herbs for use. At the back of the house is a sizeable garden with a generous patio area with table and chairs for your additional relaxation and enjoyment when the weather allows!
Other things to note
Whilst very thick in some places, the walls are thinner downstairs so we do hear distant neighbour noise occasionally. Our cat lives with us when we are here and this may make the cottage unsuitable for someone with pet allergies.

I do have a single bedroom available also which I don't list separately as the bathroom would need to be shared. If you are travelling with family or a friend please message me for information.
We are just around the corner from The Half Moon pub and The Royal Chase Hotel, but also near enough for a level walk into Shaftesbury with its various pubs, restaurants and coffee shops. There are numerous other traditional pubs and gastro pubs within a short driving distance.
The night skies around Shaftesbury have recently been awarded "dark skies status" one of only 14 similarly designated areas on earth and the first AONB in the UK to be recognised.

I already have excellent reviews for cleanliness but in view of Covid 19 will take particular care cleaning key touch areas such as banisters, light switches, door handles, seating areas etc.
The bedding has additional protective layers that will all be washed after each guest.
I have introduced a minimum 1 day gap between each booking, for this reason the minimum stay is 3 nights.
