- "We ended up being the only guests for our entire stay and it was a great experience! We came in November to do an arctic circle tour and, obviously and as expected, there is not much to do in Fairbanks in November. The House had great history and being able to explore it (with the staff's permission) made this historian's stay extremely memorable. Breakfast was prepared for us every morning and it was far and above the best meals we had the entire trip. We loved every single part of this experience. "

The offer the most amazing service of an "Aurora Wake-Up Call" -- during the night, when the northern lights are at their peak, they will knock on your door and let you know it's time to go outside. Definitely would go there again. Somewhat pricey in my POV."

- "When you are in Fairbanks this is the place to stay!!! Price was great, unit was very nice hosts were even nicer." - "Myself and two friends set about to travel to Fairbanks to see the northern lights. We reviewed many listings but the reviews about Carol and Les were outstanding - and were 100% on point. Warm, homemade cookies awaited us when we arrived. Staying in the apartment below their home was almost like staying in their home. There were all of the cooking utensils, spices, condiments, etc that you would have in your own home - probably more! There was aluminum foil, ziplocs, etc which almost is never found in a vrbo. Prior to our trip Carol was extremely helpful about planning our things to do. While we were there she gave us guidance and recommendations as well. Our trip could not have been more perfect and I believe it had a lot to do with Carol and Wes. I will be back in the summertime, and have already recommended this property to friends."

A charming cedar shake house perched on a bluff overlooking the Tanana River with a view of the Alaska Range mountains when the weather permits. About 2000 square feet with 2 bedrooms, each with a queen bed plus a sofa for overflow sleeping. Total of 5 people can be accommodated in winter.
I have lived at Casa Tanana for the past 18 years and have enjoyed it immensely. I recently retired from the Univeristy of Alaska Fairbanks and would like to share my home and its ambiance with you while I am away.
You should think about renting Casa Tanana if you want the most deluxe river camp possible, with an outstanding view of the Tanana River and mountains beyond, where you can enjoy Interior Alaska regardless of the weather. The power of Alaska is in the rivers, mountains and skies and all three are on uncluttered display from the living room and most other places on the property.
If the cloud cover and aurora activity are right you can see the aurora from inside the house if you turn off all the lights. The view from within the house will not be as clear as it would be if you went outside because you will be looking through 4 panes of glass. However, there is no light pollution at Casa Tanana. If you visit primarily for the aurora you should plan on having a car and spending time driving around for the best vantage point for a particular night.
Late in the winter when the ice is thickest there is easy access to cross-country skiing on the Tanana River. Easiest skiing is on snow-machine trails on the river but you can venture off the trails to read the animal tracks along the banks.
Casa Tanana sits about 100 feet above river level and the view is to the East south-east across the Tanana River and onto the Tanana Flats. The land across the river is a functional wilderness and as a result you never see fixed lights from the living room window in the months when it gets dark, yet you are only about 15 minutes from Fairbanks International Airport, 2 hours from Denali National Park and within about 10 miles of the Fairbanks city center, all accessible on good paved roads.
About 50 miles across the flats are the mountains of the Alaska Range and when it is clear you can see four peaks ranging from about 12,000 to 14,000 feet in elevation. There is a key to their names on an end table in the living room.
The river is alive, regardless of the season. As a natural travel corridor, aircraft of all types, dog teams, skiers, and watercraft pass by. The water level fluctuates dramatically among the seasons with the least water and most abundant sandbars from late-September through late-June. Mile-wide shallow water dominates the view from late-June through mid-September as snow melts in the mountains. Full moon nights on expansive pure white snow are enchanting. The nighttime skies are unpolluted and the aurora is visible from the property when active and it is not overcast.
- "Would definitely stay again!" - "We fell in love the minute we opened the door! What a beautiful home! Everything was clean and cozy. There were plenty of supplies, towels, extra bedding. And, the 2-story atrium... OH MY GOODNESS!!! Views for miles! We even saw the Auroras from that amazing atrium! If anyone needs a fabulous place to stay, THIS IS THE ONE!!! We were extremely pleased!" - "The property was just as it was described. Very nice home and views were awesome."

- "This place is legit! We were in Fairbanks to visit family and needed a palce to stay. The cabin is in a great location. It’s far enough from Fairbanks to be out of the city but close enough that it doesn’t take long to drive there. The location is beautiful. The cabins are along the Chena River, and the friendly property owners told us we were welcome to hang out by the river and use the fire pits. The cabin has great Alaska charm with all the amenities. It has two floors with plenty of space for our family of four. The bathrooms are nice, and the kitchen is well-appointed for cooking meals. Upstairs, the primary bedroom has a balcony that was nice for sitting on and viewing the river. Most important, the cabin was clean! This is the main way we judge VRBOs. There were plenty of towels and other items. The check-in process was also simple. We received a text telling us the cabin was ready and we were able to walk in and start our stay. If you’re looking for a place to stay close to Fairbanks with at Alaska charm that is clean and cozy, this is your place!"

- "We stayed at this property for 4 nights, and it was perfect for us! The location was convenient for what we had planned. Parking was easy and clearly marked. Inside was very nice! Lovely decor, oversized towels, soft rugs and sheets, comfy beds, and a nice shower. The kitchen was stocked with what we needed for basic cooking, including seasonings. It was also nice that they had cotton swabs, body wash, and new toothbrushes included. We didn’t use them, but it just showed the care that the owners took to make it a home away from home. They also created a binder with lots of information and ideas for things to do, places to eat, etc. We took some of those recommendations and were very pleased with our experiences. Recommended 100% if you are staying in the Fairbanks area."

- "Loved the location, property was comfortable and clean!" - "We came for the Northern Lights! This involved multiple night tours and we didn't rent a car. Some tours would only pick you up from a hotel but we wanted a place of our own with a kitchen so that we could cook. We were within an easy 5 min walk of LaQunita and felt safe enough walking there. The Getaway was a perfect size for us with everything we needed, except a mixing bowl. Yup! That's all we needed! The empty wooded lot next door in the snow a was beautiful bonus to our views. We had a minor situation and Tera and Bittner were very accommodating and actually was nice getting to know Bittner. Thank you for the advice on the East Ramp Pizza place!"

Excellent communication from the host and a very nice location within walking distance of quite a few things Fairbanks has to offer. The place was clean and well stocked with everything we needed." - "We previously lived in Fairbanks for 22 years, about a mile from this VRBO so were we very familiar with this area. We were there to move our mid-30 year daughter and granddaughter down to the Lower 48 to be closer to family. The unit was very clean and stocked with everything we needed, as well as some extras I wasn't expecting that came in handy. The location was great for us as well as for tourists. It's right next door to Pioneer Park, one of Fairbanks prime tourist locations. . We took our granddaughter to the park every day to take a break from the long hours and days of sorting and packing. The long-term tenants upstairs were warm and welcoming. Brian, our host was wonderful. We have stayed in many VRBOs over the years, both in the US and overseas, and I would highly recommend this VRBO to anyone looking to travel to Fairbanks, Alaska."

The washer/dryer unit is located in the mechanical room just off the kitchen and an initial supply of detergent and dryer sheets is kept on hand.
The property has lots of birch and aspen trees, a few spruce, lawns and flower beds, corrals and barn.
During the winter months and the northern lights are dancing in the sky above, you just have to step out the door to take in this amazing phenomenon. There are no street or city lights to prevent a good viewing.
If you're visiting us during the winter months, we highly suggest you rent an all-wheel drive vehicle with good tires that is winterized for our Fairbanks winters. The roads can be challenging!
PLEASE NOTE. We (owners) live upstairs. We have pets and we're a busy family. We are conscientious of noise levels and try to be as respectful as possible about this while living upstairs. If you are looking for silence and a more isolated location, I suggest looking for alternative accommodations.
Our goal is to give you an enjoyable place to stay while you discover the wonders of Fairbanks.
- "This house is so cute! The grounds are beautiful placed in the woods yet so close to town. Host has plenty of pamphlets for things to do in the area and a list of good restaurants in the area & a Kitchen stocked with everything you’ll need if you prefer to stay in. Quiet and peaceful during normal sleeping hours, the only noise we herd from above was the dog playing and a few footsteps, but definitely not enough of a deterrent to stay somewhere else."

Damage Protection: Insurance vs. Security Deposit
We offer two options for protecting your stay:
Security Deposit – A refundable amount held during your stay and returned after checkout if no damage is found.
Vacation Rental Insurance – A non-refundable, low-cost option that covers accidental damage up to a set limit.
Why We Recommend Insurance:
✔ Better Coverage – Protects against accidental damage beyond what a deposit covers.
✔ Less Upfront Cost – No need to tie up funds with a large deposit.
✔ Hassle-Free – No waiting for refunds or disputes after checkout.
For peace of mind and a smoother experience, we highly recommend choosing the vacation rental insurance option. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!

The space
This is a small, cozy room in our family home with reduced closet space due to water pipes running through part of the closet. This makes it the lowest priced room in our house for short stays. (The pipes require a dehumidifier and periodic inspections so a month long stay in that room isn’t ideal. We have other rooms available for longer durations, with discounted long term rates).
This is a wonderful room for minimalists and for short stays and people who don't mind the white noise of a dehumidifier.
This room is in the basement level making it a cool refuge from the heat of summer.
