Stone fireplaces and a wood stove add ambiance and warm you in winter, and ceiling fans in every room make the central air conditioning necessary only in the hottest days of summer. Lovely 19th Century wood floors grace the house throughout and historic, winding wood staircases lead to cozy but roomy bedrooms upstairs. Please note: The historic staircases uneven, narrow, steep, and open at top and bottom. They must be navigated with care and are unsuitable for small children and individuals with limited mobility or who need bedroom and bath all on one level.

The Farmhouse has 2 full suites, each with large eat-in kitchen, living area, screened porch, one large bedroom, and bath. The Pond View suite has a queen and twin bed, whirlpool tub and shower, and fireplaces up and downstairs, whereas the Mountain View side has a queen and double bed, large tiled shower, and wood stove downstairs.

Our 2 bedroom Barn Loft (VRBO #457779) has spectacular views of the Blue Ridge from every room. Entirely modern with glass front wood stove, slate and wood flooring, soapstone counters, and stainless appliances, this is a most special addition to our farm about an eighth of a mile from the farmhouse. The entirely renovated, Historic Poorhouse features a vaulted ceiling great room with kitchenette, stone fireplaces, a large bedroom on the first floor and a loft bedroom up steep stairs, plus one bath. While private, it is a short minute walk from the farmhouse.

A beautiful old farm in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The 1880 farmhouse sits on a small stream that runs through the entire fifty-five acre property. The house is clean, minimally decorated, with pasture views out of every window.

The farm is located 80 miles from Washington DC and is just down the road from Sperryville, Old Rag Mountain, Luray Caverns, Skyline Drive and other local attractions.

There are two bedrooms. In the master bedroom there is as queen bed and there are two twin beds in the second bedroom. We spent most of our mornings on the large screened in porch drinking coffee while listening to the exchange of songs sung by the native birds. The house is well preserved with original wavy glass windows and hardwood floors throughout. If you are a chef or strive to be, the kitchen is well stocked with just about every utensil you can imagine. Sleeping was not an issue with the lullaby of crickets in a beautiful, comfortable bed. Our cabin is an ideal location for hiking in the Shenandoahs, wine tasting, Luray Caverns, and more. And it is less than two hours from DC!

IMPORTANT DETAILS:

Cell reception is spotty. Great for unplugging but please be aware before you stay with us! Make sure to print or save your door code to get into the cabin before you leave. We have a landline you can use for local and emergency phone calls.

Please be advised this is a mountain property. The road to the cabin is gravel and steep. All Wheel Drive and high clearance vehicles are required November through March, and strongly recommended year-round. We also recommend Travel Insurance during winter months.

Trash Policy: Our cleaners can only take 1 kitchen bag (13 gallon) of trash with them when they clean. If you'd like to arrange with our property manager for a small fee to take trash to the landfill for you, you can text or call him to arrange it. Please give him at least two days advance notice.

Cabin is accessed off the main road US-211. There is a gravel road that provides access to the home with sufficient parking for several cars. Neighborhood is quiet and secluded, with most activities no more than 10 min drive away.
1. Quiet Hours are 9 pm to 7 am. All of the surrounding neighbors live in their homes and do not tolerate parties/events/loud noise.
2. Total Guests allowed are 12. Please do not bring additional guests unless approved with host prior.
3. Pets are allowed but must be listed on the reservation. There is an additional cleaning fee involved. If bringing a pet, please update the reservation.
4. Wifi is run off satellite - it is sufficient to answer emails, internet browing, and sending messages. It is NOT fast enough for zoom calls, downloading, and streaming. If needing to work, you have to go into town where they have a few coffee shops.

Feed your soul at a nature getaway located on 35 wooded acres bounded by the Thornton River and Shenandoah National Park. The sound of the running river and the singing birds will bring a meditative state to your body. Relax by spring fed ponds and enjoy star-filled skies. Within steps of the cottage are private trails to explore. Hike to the Park on the nearby Thornton River Trailhead. It's a 17 minute drive to the Thornton Gap Entrance of Skyline Drive. Visit charming Little Washington and Sperryville with wineries, breweries, distilleries, galleries, shops and restaurants just minutes away.

The cottage is located at the top of the property behind the main house which is occupied by the home owners. It has been beautifully updated with paint, appliances, new bathroom, flooring and HVAC system. It is a very quiet place where you can read, relax, walk, forest bathe and enjoy nature. There is a running stream in front of the property that you can hear even at the cottage. It creates a meditative sound to help you get a restful sleep.

You can use the entire property for hiking and exploring. There is no fishing or swimming in the ponds, but you can hang out and enjoy the water. Cook out on the grill (bring your own charcoal) while you enjoy the open back porch.

The kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans and utensils to make a meal from simple to gourmet. The refrigerator has an ice maker and there is an electric stove, microwave and hand mixer. Pottery from Sur La Table, wine glasses and plenty of coffee mugs round out the kitchen. Salt, pepper, sugar and other spices make it easy to flavor your creation.

Before you come to the property you can stop at the popular Corner Store in Sperryville to get gourmet meats, produce, wine and beer. There is also an adorable local produce grocery store called Roy and Janet's that is open from 8:00 AM - 8:00 PM every day. They have amazing fruits, eggs, home grown veggies and any other dry good you would want in your kitchen.

The Sperryville area is home to amazing wineries including Quièvremont Vineyard and Winery, Little Washington Winery and Gadino Cellars. Rappahannock Cellars and Chester Gap Winery (INCREDIBLE VIEW), are about 20 minutes away, and Ducard Vinyard is 25 minute drive. Copper Fox Distillery in the River District has world class whiskey. And there are three breweries Pen Druid Brewing, Hopkins Ordinary Aleworks and Veditz Brewing. These spots are within 6 miles of the cottage.

There is an amazing 6 mile loop on paved/gravel road for a beautiful walk out the front driveway. The entrance to the Thornton River Trailhead is 2 miles down the road and has street parking. The trail goes along the river for an easy walk or you can challenge yourself and go on up to the Shenandoah Park for a great in and back hike.

A covered front porch welcomes you to take your boots off a rock for a while. The stylish but cozy main living space has an open plan for connection in the living room and dining room. An open doorway separates you from the spacious kitchen with a custom island, coffee and tea station, and all the amenities you need for cooking. Stash all your supplies for your stay in the walk-in pantry alongside our gear and paper goods, which you are welcome to use during your stay. Head through the mud room and laundry to the covered side porch, where you'll find a great outdoor dining space (Steph's fave spot for a morning cup of tea). Other main-floor amenities include a full bathroom and first-floor primary bedroom with an attached office and private en suite bath.

Outside, enjoy the fenced-in yard with your crew - playing lawn games, soccer, or football (we suggest two-hand touch ;D ), explore 16 acres of mountainside farmland, or take a long walk on private trails around the property. We invite you to bring your well-behaved dogs to enjoy the fully fenced property (bowls, paw wipes, and poop bags provided). Wander up the hill to a gorgeous view and drift along the lighted path to the "upper" fire pit. Stick close to the house to relax in Adirondack chairs next to the grill area and lower firepit, roasting marshmallows and enjoying a campfire before falling into cozy beds.

Upstairs settle the kids into the attic playroom, with two twin beds and some comfy chairs for bedtime stories. Two bedrooms are just down the hall with a full bath upstairs between them. The front bedroom even has private access with a balcony that overlooks the side yard and garage.

Each room has updated, quiet AC units for those hot summer nights - though we love to open the windows, turn on the ceiling fan, and listen to the summer peepers! In the winter, snuggle into our premium linens and fluffy warm duvets while the radiators keep you just the right amount of toasty!

We try to provide all the amenities you could hope for to make your stay as easy and restful as possible - towels and linens, coffee and tea, paper goods, blackout curtains, and toiletries. The property was easy to find and provided easy access to Skyline Drive / Shenandoah National Park and Luray while still feeling secluded in an idyllic valley setting. The 2BR/1 BA guest house is located 5 minutes away from the Old Rag Mtn parking lot. it is equipped with all modern amenities surrounded by 10 acres of serene space at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains that include a river, plenty of outdoor seating to read, observe wildlife (including our chickens and bees) and stargaze, plus a fire pit to enjoy s’mores. Don’t forget to check out the amazing show the fireflies put on during summer nights or the breathtaking views of fall foliage!

The bedroom upstairs is a loft with high ceilings and a cupula, a king bed, TV, closet, and an oversized chair with comfy blankets perfect for reading or journaling. Downstairs, you’ll find a bedroom with a queen bed and a small bathroom. Our living room space contains a couch and a corner that includes a microwave, fridge, coffee/tea bar, and the option of using a countertop induction range with supplies to prepare a meal. We have a dining area set up for you on your private deck.

Outside, you are welcome to roam and take a walk to the trout-stocked Hughes River on our property. Make a catch? Use our grill or fire pit in the evening.

The cottage also has board games and books to entertain in the event of a rainy day.

Our area is quite remote and yes, that means cell service can be limited. We have wifi that allows you to enable wifi calling.

The Stonesthroe Cottage is our guesthouse. Our private residence is also on property and we are just a short walk away should you need any assistance.

We have two beehives on the property. While they are not close to the guesthouse, we want to make sure all are aware in the event a guest is allergic.

We are nestled in nature. Mother Nature provides tranquility, serenity, and… all sorts of wildlife. We often see lovely deer and stunning birds. We occasionally see bears and snakes and sometimes deal with pesky bugs and critters… including stink bugs fall/winter/spring. We ask that you respect the wildlife you may encounter and keep your distance. We also have plenty of bug repellant available for you to use.

Our Cottage is 15 minutes from Sperryville and 30 minutes from Little Washington, and all of the restaurants and amenities. The Old Rag parking area and the Ridge Trail trail head--one of the most popular hikes on the East Coast-- is only a mile down the road. We also have access to Shenandoah National Park and all of its hiking trails. The Cedar Run and Lower White Oak Canyon Falls Trailheads--two of the other best hikes in the park--are only 20 minutes away. You can access these in Etlan via Rt 643, and avoid Skyline Drive and the crowds! The property also fronts several hundred feet of the Hughes river, which offers some of the best fly fishing in the state.

NOTE: Internet and wifi is available via HughesNet but due to proximity to Shenandoah National Park and the rural location, cell phone service is spotty. T Mobile and Verizon offer some coverage. We recommend guests download movies, maps, and music to their devices prior to arrival at the property.
