I didnt care for the people sitting throughout the hotel who seemed to stare and watch your every move. When i first went into my room there was a McDonalds coffee cup, empty bag of chips, dr pepper bottle and a mountain dew bottle sitting in random places throughout the room. So either the hotel house keeping staff didnt do their job properly or someone was in the room after housekeeping was and they did not clean up after themselves. "

- "A hidden gem in the mountains.. not only were the hosts amazing, but went above and beyond to make sure their guests are comfortable and taken care of. Between the wildlife that you see in the yard, including deer right up towards the house, to how quiet and serene it is. Your close to 2 towns, Winchester is 30 min away, and Strasburg is 15 min from the house. If you love antiquing, I would suggest going into downtown strasburg to The Emporium. It is a cafe/bookstore/antique store. Wear comfy shoes, it is massive and a lot of cool finds!! If your hungry, afterwards check out Crabby Maggie’s. Amazing seafood dishes, the owner is such a sweet guy. Or check out the Brewery right in town. A lot of different things to do around the area including a battlefield to check out… We will defiantly be back for another relaxing weekend!"

It has steep steps and a steep walk way. It is a true mountain cabin. The drive to the house is alittle steep. If we have gotten snow or alot of rain the driveway maybe difficult to navigate without 4wd or all wheel drive. This is a mountain cabin.
- "We enjoyed a wonderful stay at Masten cabin. Very clean and comfortable, with everything you need for a restful, peaceful getaway. Set in the woods, it’s easy to connect with nature. Floated in the Shenandoah River with our dog, fun! Enjoyed live music, great wings and good beer at The Box Office, the locals were awesome and welcoming. We Loved the decor in the cabin and the ‘hope wins’ theme. The owner was very responsive and helpful. Thank you for sharing your home with us! We would love to come back again sometime soon."

- "House was very clean and spacious. The views were beautiful. Had a great time sitting by the river." - "What a great getaway from the hustle and bustle in a beautifully private setting. Once you arrive you feel like you are far away from everything. However, you are only minutes away from so many other options. The beauty of the property and the river is amazing. The farmhouse was spacious, comfortable and very clean. Everything that you need to cook is available in the kitchen. We stopped at Crabill's Store as suggested and picked up a few delicious steaks and bacon - so glad we did!. We enjoyed the easy access to the river and the kayaks and floats that were provided with the property. The pavilion was more than expected with electric and items for campfire and other conveniences. Fishing was best from right off the bridge. The hosts were very detailed and informative prior to our arrival. They made you feel right at home. The entire process from beginning to end was so easy. We were only on a short weekend break but enjoyed every minute of our stay. Looking forward to staying again! I highly recommend experiencing the serenity of this property."

- "Our family really enjoyed being here. The house had all the features we loved and more. We especially enjoyed sitting by the river and the screened in porch I’m the evenings. The house was very spacious yet cozy. Like home away from home. I especially want to say our host was so attentive and easy to contact if needed. We look forward to going back again." - "My husband and I brought our 5 month old for a little getaway and we were not disappointed! Callie was so accommodating and easy to get in touch with. We felt right at home in the master bedroom—it was extra cozy. The master bedroom and screened porch make this getaway 5 stars alone. Add in the river, the wine berries around the property and the surrounding beauty and you have it made! The Mountain View on the way to and from the property is breathtaking. Watch out for the gnats in the heat of the summer (mostly toward the road where the forest gets really dense). They tend to want to fly straight into your eyes and I had one stuck in there for a few hours (thankfully got it out). This is basically on national forest land so there’s nothing but forest for miles if you’re looking straight out the front of the property. Beautiful stay! I can imagine the fall would be equally as beautiful here. We will be coming back."

- "This property was a wonderful getaway for our family of four (and dog)! The cabin is clean and very well appointed. We appreciated having basics like soap/toiletries, some bottled water, laundry detergent, and plenty of towels. The hot tub is large and was lovely to hang out in and star gaze at night. The river was warm and I loved that you could hear flowing water from the deck. Definitely bring water shoes, as it's rocky (the entire Shenandoah is like this). We had a wonderful time, and would love to come back some time in the future!"

- "The house and property/location were exactly what we had in mind. Jennifer was very quick on her responses when I had a question. We hope to come back next year!" - "This was an overall amazing family get together!!! We try to reconnect as a family atleast once a summer in this area and it was a trip we'll remember a long time to come. We were a little worried it wasn't as private as we would have liked but the neighbors were all respectful of eachother and we didn't bump into anybody else our entire trip. Its a gorgeous setting, gorgeous yard. We were able to watch deer drink in the river and go across the yard. We tubed down the river a ways. Its shallow enough to walk back easily with the littler ones who are 9. The cabin is beautiful and cozy. It was spacious enough for us all to have our own space when needed which was good for my older son and his fiance whom joined us. The cabin is perfect and the master bed was unbelievably comfortable. The little ones and my teenage son shared the loft together and all had plenty of room. I enjoyed the covered porch and read in my free time. The hot tub was a plus because it was a little chilly for the time of year on the river so it was perfect for warming up. I would strongly reccomend this cabin for families!!!"

- "The house offers absolutely stunning views of the mountains. Watching the sunset on the back deck is really beautiful. The hosts provide all of the little things that most hosts don’t think of. The house is super clean and very nice with so many amenities. What a gem! We all couldn’t believe we found such a nice place hidden in the mountains. The hosts are very responsive as well. Perfect stay in the mountains!" - "The views from the dining table and from the patio are outstanding. The house has plenty of space and comfortable furniture for all seven of us to have a great time. It's a house in the woods, so, as others have noted, there are bound to be bugs around. It was stinkbugs for us, but they are harmless and the property owner told us about them beforehand. I would definitely come back."

- "Loved the place! One of the best and most appointed places I’ve ever stayed at. They’ve thought of everything you’d need and it’s all provided." - "First, the host communicated well and at the right times with all needed information. Check-in was keyless and super easy, and the description of the home was accurate, and the emailed instructions left no questions. My favorite spot was the porch overlooking the meadow. Having a comfortable outdoor space to gather is key, and the porch table and seating did not disappoint! The kitchen is super well-equipped -- we had everything we needed and more. Some of us enjoyed the hot tub, we all enjoyed walking the property and the sectional sofa was the right size for our group. The beds are on the firmer side, and we all slept well. Really glad we selected this property. Thanks for a great stay!"

Experience the magic of another era in this big, comfortable Victorian house in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, on a quiet, tree-lined street in Strasburg’s historic district. The neighborhood is wreathed in meadows and dotted with old churches, with views of Massanutten Mountain and the Alleghenies in the distance. Built in 1868 as a Lutheran parsonage, the house is like a folk art museum inside, with rich colors and paintings on the walls –an unforgettable backdrop for making memories. There are 5 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms, a dining room, a parlor, a living room, a sun room/former art studio, and a fully-equipped kitchen. There are also two porches, one in front, with a bench swing and cushioned seating; the other, screened-in, in back, for summer meals. There’s a brick patio right off the back porch, adjoining a fully-fenced, spacious yard. The house is a fifteen-minute walk from the Shenandoah River, and a two-block walk from Strasburg's quaint main street (King Street), where you will find boutiques, antique shops, restaurants, and the town green—where they give free concerts in summer. There’s a beautiful public pool in the town park, a mile away, overlooked by Massanutten Mountain. The park has a playground for little kids, a boat slip to the Shenandoah, basketball and tennis courts, gazebos for picnicking, and fields for soccer. From Strasburg, it’s a ten- or fifteen-minute drive to the Shenandoah National Park entrance in Front Royal; to the Belle Grove and Cedar Creek historic site in Middletown; and to the Valley's many other attractions--battlefields, vineyards, taprooms, gastropubs, hiking paths, parks, gardens, museums and scenic bridges.
The house is characterful, colorful and cozy, with loads of family space both indoors and outside. The ground floor has a parlor, a TV/family room, a dining room, a full bathroom, a sun room/former art studio (one of the owners was an artist, specializing in basset hounds), and a fully equipped kitchen with an Aga gas stove and a built-in breakfast nook. In the breezeway between the kitchen and the back porch there’s a laundry room and a Summer Kitchen with an electric stove. On the brick patio beside the porch, there’s a grill for summer barbecuing. The back garden is sprawling, English-style, with lots of shade trees, and extends to a front lawn that’s also fenced in. There are dog doors throughout the main floor; the flaps can be removed so dogs can get easily to the garden (first make sure all the gates in the picket fence are closed!).
Every room has a different color, theme and use, and you’ll see oil paintings on the walls of basset hounds and of Russian scenes— the owners were professors of Russian and Soviet literature and culture (as well as dog lovers). There are four bedrooms on the second floor. The master has a queen bed and a private full bathroom; the blue bedroom has a full bed, the green bedroom has bunk beds, and the red bedroom has two twins. There’s a second full bathroom in the second-floor hall. There’s a fifth bedroom in the attic, which has its own AC and heating and a double bed.
Other points of interest:
•There’s a carport for PARKING, and you can also park in front of the house.
•There’s a wood-burning stove in the Green Parlor (TV room) , and firewood for your use on the front porch. (Don't make fires in the Yellow Parlor fireplace, the chimney is 200 years old—too fragile.)
• Feel free to use the china, silver, glassware, cooking equipment and table linens in the cabinets and bureaus during your stay for your feasts with family and friends.
• One caution: a calico cat lives here sometimes. Every trace of her existence cannot be wholly eradicated through vacuuming. So if you have severe cat allergies, this may not be the house for you.
I will be happy to tell you anything else you would like to know about the Shenandoah Basset Dacha if you make an inquiry. Email me!
Guest access
You can go anywhere you like in the house, but if you stay in the attic bedroom, turn on the light in the stairwell (right inside the latched door to the attic, on your left on the wall) before you go up, and watch your step! Please do not go into the cellar. But the fuse box is in there; the Property Manager can come over and flip switches if need be. Just in case: the switch to the overhead light in the cellar is on the low ceiling as you enter, directly above your head, right next to the door frame.
Other things to note
ENJOY your time in this house, and do things people did when life was unplugged! Cook, feast, play games (there’s a huge games cupboard in the TV room), paint, read, write, build a fire in the wood-burning stove, or take walks in the neighborhood and its meadows. The house has WIFI, so you can also work on your laptop, watch movies or news (the house subscribes to Sling) and there are three TVs, where you can access your streaming services.
I will email you the full house guide the week before you arrive. Please email me if you have any questions about the house once you are here. To see guest reviews, go to the other major short-term rental site—I am a VRBO novice!
- "This house is so very unique. The house is beautiful with antique charm. Walls are covered with art and amenities abound. The owners are clearly dog lovers and have made the house so easy for your pet. Great back yard with fence, dog doors, etc. Plenty of seating for everyone and you can spend time in a different part of the house, each day (the screened-in porch was wonderful). We arrived during 100 degree weather but the air conditioners managed to keep the house cool, anyway. The hidden bedroom in the attic was neat. The area was charming with tubing/kayaking/rafting/hourseback-riding all nearby."

The house known as Holliday & King is a great option for families or group of friends who want to get away and enjoy small town life, explore Shenandoah National Park, the George Washington National Forest as well as the rich history of Shenandoah Valley. Located in the center of Strasburg's Historic District, it is 1 to 2 blocks to small restaurants, a brewery and shopping. The house itself is part of the Town's history, built in 1761. Enjoy large rooms, high ceilings and a lovely porch where you can watch activity in the town. Our local folks will probably say hello too!
- "We had a wonderful stay at this amazing house....everyone had an enjoyable time and loved reading about the history of the house. And despite its age and old-school charm, it was in wonderful condition and was equipped with updated bathrooms, kitchen, a/c, wifi, and laundry room, with televisions in every bedroom and in the game room. The rooms were quite comfortable and oversized, and the dining room with the extra-large farmhouse table was super nice. And it had a great outdoor patio, actually two patio areas. Very clean, and right in the heart of Strasburg, a perfect location if staying in town there and not too far from Shenendoah National Park. And the hosts, Kath and Tom, were fantastic...they left us notes everywhere to help us feel at home and even surprised us with a very nice welcome gift on the farmhouse table, which we thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed. A five-star stay all the way around...the best option for sure, would highly recommend this house!!!"

The Deer Meadow Retreat is an ideal vacation spot for the whole family. There is something for everyone: relax around the campfire, cool off tubing, or use as a home base for exploring Shenandoah National Park. Our newly renovated riverfront vacation home features a fully-equipped kitchen, 4 bedrooms with 7 beds, and beautiful vistas year round. Hike in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, experience historic small town Strasburg, or take in the fall beauty on Skyline Drive National Park.
The space
PLEASE NOTE: the last 2 miles to the house do not get regular winter maintenance and do not get plowed unless there are 5 or more inches of snow. We highly recommend that all vehicles be four wheel or all wheel drive if there is any snow in the forecast.
The Deer Meadow retreat features 4 bedrooms, two queen beds upstairs and twin over full bunk beds downstairs. The newly renovated and fully updated kitchen and living room give space to entertain and relax. Outdoors, you will enjoy 2 acres of open yard for activities, a fire pit for roasting marshmallows, and 200 feet of riverfront access to launch inner tubes, canoes, or kayaks to float down the river.
Guest access
Guests may use the entire house and yard. Pets are welcome, though please do NOT allow pets in the bedrooms or on any furniture.
Other things to note
There is a somewhat steep gravel road near the house that must be driven to access the property. This is not a problem 99% of the time and can be handled by 2-wheel drive vehicles, but can cause issues in the case of freezing rain or heavy snow. The hill may offer a challenge if you are driving a large vehicle such as an RV.
Please exercise caution if you decide to access the river! While the river is mostly shallow and slow moving, there are deep pools of 6 ft or more. Please ALWAYS use flotation devices and wear water shoes on your feet if you enter the river, as there may be sharp rocks or broken glass that could cause injury.

We know everyone needs to get away from the city. Even us! That's why we built our home away from home in 1998. Our Woodland Retreat has everything you'll need to enjoy the peace of nature without losing all the comforts of home.
We have been coming to Fort Valley since August 1996. Originally we bought the property to give our five kids the opportunity to experience nature and outdoor activities. John used wood from the trees on the property to build the Woodland Cabin Retreat with his sons which they completed in 2019. The cabin is located 15 minutes from Shenandoah National Park, 30 minutes from Luray Caverns , and 5 minutes from Elizabeth Furnace and George Washington National Forest.
- "Beautiful clean convenient" - "Very pleasant Street, John was such a communicative host and I couldn't ask for anything better. "

Escape to this secluded and cozy cabin, where breathtaking views of the valley below await you. Nestled among the trees overlooking the picturesque Shenandoah River and bordered by the serene G.W. National Forest, this retreat is perfect for those looking to unwind and reconnect with nature.
Previously recognized in Travel & Leisure magazine as one of Airbnb's Most Wish-listed Holiday Stays, the cabin features a screened-in porch, ideal for sipping morning coffee and a wraparound deck perfect to enjoy dinner while watching amazing sunsets. As evening falls, cozy up by the wood fireplace or gather around the outdoor fire pit. End the day with stargazing while soaking in the relaxing hot tub.
The cabin boasts ample opportunities for exploration and outdoor fun. Hikers can enjoy the private access trail that climbs the mountain and intersects with the Massanutten Circuit Trail. Located on one of the Seven Bends of the Shenandoah River (a local landmark), the cabin also provides access to the river. Whether you're seeking a romantic getaway or a family retreat, the cabin is an ideal location to create lasting memories.
Although just listed on this platform, The Bear Den has a 5-year established rental history with glowing reviews on a competing platform.
Please read the following prior to booking:
DRIVEWAY. Due to the steepness of the driveway, a vehicle with AWD/4WD vehicle is REQUIRED at ALL times, regardless of the time of year. We cannot stress this enough! Some guests say that it is the steepest driveway they have ever traveled...it is no joke!! In addition, the bottom of the driveway is privately owned so parking and walking is not an option.
INCLEMENT WEATHER. Safety is a huge priority for us! If during the winter there is ice/snow, the driveway could potentially be too dangerous to travel. If the driveway is unsafe to travel, we will inform guests as soon as possible and discuss their options.
LOW WATER BRIDGE. In order to access the cabin, guests will need to cross the Shenandoah River by means of a low water bridge. Occasionally, flooding can occur, and guests will not be able to enter or exit the property during that time. We will notify guests if that is a possibility and accommodate accordingly.
INSECTS. Since the cabin is surrounded by nature and fairly close to a river, insects can be plentiful. We try to provide a variety of deterrents such as bug spray and citronella candles to help minimize them from joining your party.
