This is a two-story, renovated barn adjacent to the chicken coop in rural Vermont with views of the forests. It has brand new floors, a new kitchenette, and fresh look. (Some renovation is still taking place.) The chicken coop is just next door but the birds are free-range and range they will. Enjoy a private, hot shower in the garden, just outside. This listing is only suitable for people comfortable with dogs, cats, and chickens which will undoubtedly greet you outside during your stay.
The space
OK, you won't sleep in the coop, but this barn space allows you to sleep just next door to get the full country experience. This two story little house is quaint with wooded views of the Vermont countryside and not a single, road in sight. Our guest space is simple and sort of retro, harking back to a time when we weren't so preoccupied with screens. Come here to read (or write) a book, take a wooded walk, pick fruit, play CD, or write a letter. Wake to the sound of cackling chickens. Sleep to the sound of singing frogs. See a shooting star, catch a firefly, make a s'more. You get the picture. This is no hotel room and it never hopes to be. It is a back-to-the-land, rejuvenation opportunity.
Recently renovated with two floors, the Chick Inn has a king sized bed on the second floor and a pull-out couch in the living area below and a much more comfortable queen sized blow up bed upon request. (Let us know if you will be needing extra sheets for either the pull out or the queen.) Both floors and stairway to the second floor are fairly new. PLEASE DO NOT WEAR SHOES IN THE CHICK INN. WE, ourselves, even take them off at the door.
The Chick Inn has a small kitchenette for making tea, coffee, or toast, and a cupboard full of bowls, cups, glasses, and cutlery. Also it has a little refrigerator to store groceries. We have recently added a sink and little stove top. There is no oven or microwave and it is not set up for very large meal making unless you are pretty handy. If you want to fry an egg, make some soup and tea with toast, or boil pasta, you will be fine with the set up.
Inside there is a simple (toilet and sink) bathroom, outside you will find a heated open air shower, inside a privacy screen within a raging, floriferous garden. This shower has a stepping stone floor and is decorated with a million tiny, round stones for the spaces in between. These stones were collected one by one from our visits to places around the world. They are stony reminders from Kilimanjaro, the UP of Michigan, the North Sea, the Matterhorn, and so on. While showering you will see the tips of blooming flowers from the surrounding garden, and some that have escaped into the shower itself. This shower may be also be used by campers (and us!!!) Try it out with a candle, some Pandora, and nothing but the stars above. It takes about 30 seconds to warm up but then will be as hot as you need.
Downstairs there is a very large and comfy couch, a work station table and chair, a small glass breakfast table, and the kitchen. This place serves as my office during the week so there may be some remnants. There is no computer or tv that comes with this rental but you can try plugging in your phone to the available screen. We have cables set up for that purpose.
The Chick Inn is situated in the barn right behind our main house but the views are oriented away so we don't look at each other via windows. It seems more private that way. I think you will agree that it feels remote even nearby the other houses. We have a little hamlet of neighbors to the west, and some of them keep horses right across the yard. (They do not like people going near them though.) The surrounding forest is literally 100's of acres and we are at the end of a Town Trail - so it is remote. Embrace it, even if it scares you a little. It is rural, very dark at night, but totally safe.
The chickens live right next door, so yes you will likely hear the chickens in the morning. That is part of the charm. We have free-ranging hens and currently no roosters. Our neighbor's chickens sometimes join in the fun too. If you would like to be a part of the feeding experience, please let us know. We keep the food in a bin below your entrance porch.
This is be a great rental for outdoor enthusiasts like hikers, bikers, kayakers, and yogis. It is perfect for low-maintenance and/or private types of people who want their own space. This is also a good rental for couples (of all types) or families and could accommodate even more if you were willing to sleep on the other couch or floor. Since it is outside of the main house, you will not be directly sharing any space with us and can choose to keep mostly to yourselves. (IMPORTANT NOTE: This is NOT a good location for high maintenance types who really want the amenities of a hotel. This will NEVER have the sort of amenities a hotel would have. It is a country rental and comes complete with quirks, creaks, and imperfections (poor cell service for example. See a complete list of potential deal breakers at the end of this listing.) We know that these things are inconvenient but they come with the sort of country living we prefer. Also importantly, we are not interested in hosting wild partiers, indoor smokers, or anyone who will not respect the place. It would simply KILL ME to come into our sweet little cottage and smell the rank odor of yesterday's smoke. So please, please, please do not apply if this is what you have in mind.) This is our little gem and we want to share it with just the right people who will be respectful of its charm.
We don't want anyone to get be disappointed with their stay so here are the things to be wary of:
Currently there is no key to the outer door. We haven't much use for one in the past. I'd be mighty unusual for someone to want to break in way out here. You can lock it from the inside to feel safe at night.
This is a three season rental. There is now a heater and an air conditioner but be prepared for chilly weather if you come in early spring or late fall. The hot shower is outside. There is no indoor shower.
There is no tv (other than the screen mentioned above) but now we have Starlink internet. It does have a great selection of books and some cds available to listening. You have free access to use the stereo but it is a bit clunky and someone recently broke the tape decks. Also, the cell reception is bad.
There is no microwave, nor space for one. There are two burners and a toaster for warm meals. There are also a coffee maker and tea pot.
Vermont has many biting bugs in spring and early summer. They include black flies, mosquitoes, deer flies, horse flies, and the worst... no-see-ums that fit through the window screens. If they are biting (most often at night), close the windows and use the AC.
Sometimes the dog who loves too much tries to break into the guest house. We recommend locking the door from the inside if you don't want an early morning furry guest.
On occasion, despite our best attempts at curbing this, there are sometimes mice in the walls. This comes from proximity to the chicken coop, but also the close proximity to the forest. The worst times for this are the fall when they all seem to look for a good winter home. For the safety of cats and wildlife, we never use poison. So for what it's worth, the owls are still safe.
I am sure that there are more foibles to share BUT we want to end on a good note. Most people really like this space, warts and all. It is a lesser-known gem of a place at the end of a dead-end road. It has views and starry night skies. It has fire pits and forests. People come to bathe in the forest or a nearby stream. They hike the trails, sing to the frogs, read books while sprawled across a large and comfy bed. They eat fresh chicken eggs and snack on asparagus or raspberries. They go down to the farmers' market and dance to fiddle music, buy local maple syrup, dance around a may pole, and taste fresh fiddle heads or garlic scape pesto on home made bread. They wander through the gardens fondling the flowers or get on the bike and rage down the dirt road. I guess what I am trying to say is that we like it here and think that there are lots of things to do and discover. We think you will too.
Guest access
You have access to the barn, the shower, and the surrounding grounds. Have at it. There are miles of trails.
Other things to note
Do NOT use the GPS to get here. You must follow our instructions or get hopelessly lost. Many travelers have not heeded this warning and have tales to tell. The GPS is incorrect a lot of the time, taking you down very, very rustic roads - mostly impassable by the normal car.
