- "Peaceful secluded location. A front porch to watch the stars at night and enjoy a cup of coffee while watching the sunrise in the morning!" - "The property lists as having air conditioning with the air conditioning was not adequate for cooling the space during the 90° temperatures of late July. The air really did not reach the bedrooms . Ceiling fans are helpful but ,again, did not help in the bedroom. Perhaps you could consider some sort of small fans in there to help with the circulation for summer. Found The cabin it was very comfortable and otherwise we'll equipped. I loved the setting surrounding the property."

- "Great place!" - "Perfect cabin" - "My overall stay was great could have stayed alot longer! Place was clean well prepared with everything we needed, view was great location was good and i will definitely recommend and be staying again! My hosts were fantastic!!" - "This property is close to the event center in West Union and was perfect for family to stay for a wedding. The property is small but very clean!" - "This cabin property worked very well for our visit in town West Union for a wedding at the Rustic Chic Event Center and reception at the West Union Event Center. It was also close to some state parks and campgrounds for hiking and kayaking. We struggled to find a state or county park open for swimming. The only reason we did a four star on a couple items is because we thought it would be a little more secluded or in the country, but it's really inside town towards the edge; however, the owners did a great job with the patio making it feel as secluded as possible."

Getaway Suite at Rustic Acres
Cabin
Decorah, Iowa, USA

Enjoy the charm of Decorah and the beauty of the outdoors at Rustic Acres.

This spacious ground floor suite sleeps four.

Guests have access to the entire lower level and the fire pit outside the lower level deck. We do have access to a private stream with trout if you'd like to go fishing.

We encourage you to take a walk to the spring on the hill next to the house, and walk to the edge of the property so you can explore the waterfall. Others may be renting the top floor of the house or the camper, so be sure to give a friendly wave if you run into other travelers!

Please note that while the suite has its own private entrance, there is not a door at the top of the stairs leading to the upper level. We do block off the entrance for privacy since the top floor may also be rented.

When you book with Rustic Acres, we donate a portion of our earnings to help people in need find temporary housing. Thank you for your part in supporting this cause!

Springview Suite at Rustic Acres
Cabin
Decorah, Iowa, USA

Relax and refresh at Rustic Acres Homestead & Springs. Rustic Acres was family built and is family run. This is a great place to get away and connect with family, nature, and friends. You'll get peace and quiet at Rustic Acres, but we aren't far from local attractions! We are located about two miles north of Seed Savers, three miles from Winneshiek Wildberry Winery, seven miles from Luther College, nine miles from downtown Decorah, and 13 miles from Toppling Goliath. Rustic Acres is a 2.5 story house with plenty of space to relax and entertain. The lower level is actually ground-level with a walk-out deck with grill and firepit. You'll also have one bedroom with a queen and another with a twin-size bunk bed, a full kitchen, dining room, sitting area with TV (Netflix), pool table, laundry room, and bathroom. The main level of the house has beautiful views of the spring with great space for sit-down meals. You have a full kitchen, a dining area, sunroom/gameroom with dining, bathroom, sitting area with TV (Netflix) and piano. The primary bedroom is also on this level and it has an en suite bathroom and a private small deck to the outdoors. There are two additional outdoor decks on this level, one overlooking the spring and another overlooking the horse pasture. Last, we have the lofted bedroom which contains a queen, two twin beds, and two dressers. This is a favorite place for the kids to sleep or a family with young children. Guests that rent the entire house have access to all main areas of the house, both decks, the fire pit in front of the lower level, the waterfall and spring. The garage is also an apartment where Jon our property manager stays, so that is not shared. We have WiFi at Rustic Acres, but the cell service is non-existent. You may be able to make calls at the end of the drive or can use the landline for emergencies. We also have a Birdfy birdfeeder that faces the spring by the house. Birdfy does have video capabilities if you are hiking near it. Please do not touch this feeder, there are two other feeders available if you'd like to fill for birdwatching. Our Birdfy has no view of the house, and we do this so our grandfather can still see some of his old friends :) When you book with Rustic Acres, we donate a portion of our earnings to help people in need find temporary housing. Thank you for your part in supporting this cause!

Trout River Log Cabin
Cabin
Winneshiek County

Welcome to Trout River Log Cabin, a rustic 19th century Norwegian-built log house nestled in the rolling hills of Northeast Iowa, just seven miles from downtown Decorah, or three from TG Brewing. The cabin is open seasonally from April to October. Our family farm with its many acres of perennial grass fields, timber, and meandering Trout River is absolutely gorgeous. And while you're at it be sure to check out our other overnight stay, Decorah House, located five blocks from downtown Decorah.

The space
The cabin is really special. The walls are rich and textured and the colors are deep and vibrant. Pretty much everything you see, from the beadboard ceilings to the wood floors, were reclaimed from 19th century Norwegian-American log buildings. The cabin is really small and compact and measures just 17'x18'. But it has a functional kitchen, a really nice tiled shower, a mini split heat pump for AC and heating, and a gorgeous view of the Trout River valley.

The cabin was built originally in the 1850s as a Norwegian-Lutheran parochial school. Built of old growth oak, walnut, and elm trees, the house feels rich and textured, the product of a different era. In 1898 it was disassembled, moved across a field, and rebuilt as a house by Norwegian immigrant Peter Losen. It remained lived in until the late 1970s and fell into disrepair. In 2007 we disassembled the house, moved it to its present site, and spent three years lovingly restoring it. We warmly welcome you.

The cabin comfortably sleeps two. Upstairs is a comfy yet firm queen size bed. Linens and blankets are provided. There is a pullout twin sized bed that can accommodate a third person. The pullout bed is in the same space as the queen bed. Please note the steps to the upstairs are curvy and steep and that the bathroom is on the main level. Take care!

On the main level you'll find a small yet totally functional kitchen stocked with all the kitchen supplies you'll need. We also supply fair trade and organic Kickapoo coffee and teas. Also on the main level you'll find comfy arm chairs, a kitchen table, a bookshelf of interesting books, board games, photo albums of the log cabin restoration and information of the surrounding area.

The bathroom is on the main floor and the shower is upstairs in the bedroom. Both the bathroom and shower are stocked with organic soaps, shampoo and conditioner. Towels and wash cloths are provided.

Guest access
The porch is wonderful with amazing views of Trout River valley. The landscape is absolutely stunning and we think you'll agree! There is a fire ring with supplied firewood. With various infestations, please don’t bring your own wood.

You're welcome to fish and swim in Trout River. You can get to the stream by way of a five-ten minute path down the hill and through the woods. We recently won an award for our conservation practices, which include set-aside Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) native prairie lands around the stream and throughout the farm, stream bank stabilization, tree planting, and public fishing access. For forty years we've owned the only piece of private ground on Trout River that's open to public fishing and we're proud of that. You're welcome to hike the many trails, birdwatch, and poke around the farm as much as you'd like. But sorry, no hunting.

Your cell phone and Verizon cellular data work great here, but sorry, no TV or WIFI internet access. And AT&T coverage throughout the Driftless area is pretty terrible and unreliable.

Other things to note
The house measures 17'x18' and is two stories. Everything is tight and compact, but also surprisingly functional. Downstairs is the kitchen/living room and half bath. Upstairs is the bedroom and shower. The steps to the upstairs are curved and steep. Take care! If you're looking to spread out and want modern conveniences like TV, internet, a dishwasher, etc, this definitely isn't the place for you.

The cabin is 160 years old and sits in the country. There are bugs and long grass. The house is quirky and has resident crickets in the late summer months. If you're willing to put up with all that, you're in for a super relaxing and worthwhile time.

Our insurance does not allow guests to use the wood stove. Sorry.

Amenities:

Essentials • Carbon monoxide alarm • Smoke alarm • Valley view • Heating • Shampoo • Fire extinguisher • Hair dryer • Hot water • AC - split type ductless system

Fern Hollow Cabin in Lush NE Iowa
Cabin
Winneshiek County

Come sleep in storied logs, remember your birthright as one for whom the simple was perfectly enough. Call it your sanctuary, playground, arts space, or hermitage. It's all of these, and whatever else you’d like it to be!

The space
Welcome to Fern Hollow Cabin, a rustic, a historic log cabin in the lush woods of Northeast Iowa. This is the cabin of our great-great-great grandparents, Norwegian immigrants who came here in 1853. We restored it in 1989, and it's really beautiful...a walk into the simple and quiet past. The electricity is made right here, by our solar panels (in cooperation with a bright and reliable star). Our land is a botanical sanctuary with United Plant Savers and is carpeted with native species that are medicinal and beautiful.

The log house is filled with good energy from all the 165 years that people have lived here. It feels good to be connected to our past. It feels good to visit a place where the surfaces are brown, textured, and storied. And it feels good to remember that even without a phone ringing or email calling, you still know how to enjoy the passing of time.

My ancestors didn't have any modern technology; we've added some but not too much. The solar electric system powers the refrigerator and the lights. There is running water and a simple way to heat it up. There's a modern cooking range, which doesn't fit the decor but works swell! There's a special toilet--ask for details if you're curious. If you want to use a computer, you can use a laptop and charge your battery but to get internet you'll need to drive to town. If you want to make a call, you can use the land line up at our house or take a short walk or drive up the hill to use your cell phone. Here you can experience what life was like before the constant ringing and beeping of now.

In other words, it's simple. That's what you're looking for, right? A chance to get away from the clutter of everyday life, and a chance to step into another time: that's what you'll find at Fern Hollow Cabin. It is good.

The cabin is 6 miles from Seed Savers Exchange and right next door to the Pepperfield Project, dedicated to promoting and teaching hands-on cooking, gardening and agrarian life skills. We're 6.5 miles from the beautiful town of Decorah where interesting things in the arts and outdoor activities are happening all the time.

Whether you are alone or with a partner, bringing children or even a dog, we warmly invite you to come and stay for a day or more. Wrap yourself in the songs of the woods.

We Love Kids and Kids Love it Here!

Remember that time you went to an old museum cabin and wished you could stay all day and play? It’s like that, only this time you CAN stay. And not only do you get to read and play games and fall asleep and wake up in enchanted log house; on top of all that there’s the woods for running around, making forts, catching fireflies, picking flowers, and watching fairies.

Just across the little bridge is a tiny log house, a favorite place for the young ones. It’s just far enough away that they feel brave to go there, but you can see them playing from the front yard of the (not-so) Big Log House.

The tree fort, now sitting on stumps on the woods floor because the tree aged and died, is kinda’ modern-art: it’s pentangular, with a sun roof! Three kids can sleep in there easily during camp-outs from the retreat!

We like to sing and dance with children and their families, and if you ask for a family singalong at the cabin you're almost sure to get one!

Plus: swimming in Canoe Creek, campfires, stargazing, birdwatching, and seasonal events like cider pressing, gardening, black walnut gathering, maple syrup boiling, and maypole dancing.

Our girls grew up in the log cabin, and we’ve left some of their favorite books, games, and art supplies down there for other kids to discover. There’s a small loom, marbles, wooden puzzles, homemade Lincoln logs, blocks, a flower press, and more.

We look forward to meeting you!

Guest access
The whole cabin is yours. The 29 acres where we live is yours to share with us.

Other things to note
July and August can sometimes bring hot sticky spells of weather to the Midwest. The cabin does not have air conditioning, but we do have a system for using the windows and the night air to cool things down. Also there are ceiling fans in each room and a smaller fan that you can move around where you'd like it. And, there's the creek just a short walk down the road!

While you're here, you may also like to check out Luna Valley Pizza, or Little Dipper Sauna Company.

The Firefly Cabin
Cabin
Winneshiek County

Take it easy at this unique and tranquil getaway. Tucked among the trees but with the convenience of located 5 minutes from town, 200 yards from the Upper Iowa River, with plenty of outdoor activities such as biking and hiking close by. The cabin has a large screened in front porch, patio and fire pit area, that provide plenty of spaces to relax.

The space
The Firefly cabin was originally built in the early 1900s as a summer cabin. During the 1980's the cabin had a fire and burned down and was just recently rebuilt by Joel, adding his personal craftsmanship. The original chimney is still in place, offering a true cabin feel. Many people have stopped by to share memories. A favorite one- a woman remembered coming to the cabin when she was growing up and they used to sit on the porch at night and watch all the fireflies.

Relax on the screened in front porch on the daybed or eat al fresco at the outdoor table. There is a patio with chairs and a small table, the Blackstone griddle which includes seasonings, Avocado oil and all the utensils needed. A few steps down from there is the fire pit and 2 Adirondack chairs for camp fires and roasting marshmallows.

The 1st floor of the cabin includes a small kitchen- mini fridge, microwave/convection oven, toaster, coffee maker. Outdoors is a Blackstone griddle which is perfect for making burgers, stir fry, pancakes & bacon. A cozy seating area that includes a tv (no cable but plenty of vintage dvd's), board games, books- truly unplug and relax. A bathroom with a large shower and in floor radiant heat for those chilly mornings. Up stairs is a relaxing loft style bedroom with a queen sized bed with 100% pure cotton sheets and duvet cover, a dresser, full length mirror and a place to hang your clothes.

We hope you can come spend a night or two and enjoy this magical little cabin!

Guest access
Guests enjoy full access to the space with private parking and entrance.

Other things to note
We provide coffee, teas, cream and sugar, paper towels and dish soap, tp, hand soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion. There is fresh filtered water for drinking.

The cabin uses a fresh water holding tank system. Occasionally this may need to be filled before the end of your stay, typically every 2-3 days. In the bathroom closet you will see a clear water tank. Joel has marked a "call us" line. Text or call us and will refill the tank. This typically only takes about 5 minutes and is not a huge production and can been done when you are there or gone from the cabin.

Please note again that we do not have WiFi. We are located just far enough out of town that our only option is dish internet. This is very unreliable and slow. We always joke that when 2 clouds collide, the internet will be out for who knows how long. We are eagerly anticipating fiber optic internet that could be here in the next few years.
No cable tv either, just some fun dvds to get you through a rainy night. We think there is just so much to do and see in the area, a person should never be bored.

There are steps from the parking area up to the cabin, about 15 (please see the photos) and also steep stairs up to the sleeping loft.

Get ready to unplug and enjoy the cabin, nature and each other!
