We enjoyed playing albums on the record player. Will stay here again if in the area." - "Tusen Takk was a great home base for our girls trip! The decor is cozy, the house is tucked in a quiet area, and we were really close to everything." - "This was the first time we stayed in a VRBO. This house looked exactly like the photos. Super clean and cute!! So nicely decorated. There was plenty of room for the four of us. We appreciated the details/little things the owner has done. Ice cubes in the freezer, a binder with tons of local information, instructions for checking out, chocolates in a bowl and the history behind the name of the house. We ordered in food, from the list of local places in the binder, and hung out in the living room. All the food places were close by and you could walk to other establishments if you wanted. Owner also responded quickly to messages and was very helpful and friendly. We would highly recommend this VRBO, we all loved it."

A unique lodging experience. A barn turned home. The barn was built in the year 1900. We are located in downtown Spillville, IA. A unique Czechoslovakian town. This barn is part of once was a working farm before the town of Spillville was incorporated in 1920. This barn was once a home to cows, horses and I am sure some chickens. We have the resident "barn cat" Stormy patrolling the property. The living room and master bedroom is in what was once the hay loft. The kitchen is where they parked the tractor at night. The large private back yard was once a corn field. The Turkey River is just a short distance from the private back patio. Bring your kayaks or canoe and drop in right here. You may see deer helping themselves to the neighbors apple trees.
Spillville is a village founded by a German. This town grew into a refuge for Czechs. This small Czech village became a retreat for composer Antonin Dvorak.
Today Spillville is a small town in the northeast corner of Iowa nestled among the soft rolling hills of the Turkey River Valley. A dedicated community of families strive to preserve the rich history, heritage and Czech culture.

Welcome to Decorah House, a private and beautifully renovated stay on the second floor of our historic brick house in a quiet neighborhood just five blocks from downtown Decorah. The space is bright and full of natural light and filled with plants. The apartment sleeps three, has a beautiful bathroom with tiled shower, and a lovely front living room and kitchen. Walk to Pulpit Rock Brewing Co, La Rana Bistro, Impact Coffee, Oneota Food Coop, Hotel Winneshiek, Vesterheim, Convergence Ciderworks, and so much more.
We've put six years of hard work into this amazing house and we're excited to share it with you! We're two guys in our 30s and love Decorah. Whether you're here to visit one of the breweries, trout fish, mountain bike, visit your kids at Luther, or just trying to unwind, we think you'll love everything about Decorah and the house. In addition to welcoming travelers to Decorah House, we've welcomed guests to our other overnight rental Trout River Log Cabin for the past eight years. We know what it takes to be exceptional hosts and we'll do everything we can to ensure you have a great experience.
The Decorah House stay occupies the second floor of our 1850s brick house. The apartment, including the entrance and heating and cooling systems, are completely separate from our part of the house. We've taken covid seriously from the beginning and want to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.
The space is bright and full of natural light, and sits perched overlooking the Oneota Valley. The unit consists of a large living area with adjoining kitchen, a spacious bath, and large bedroom. The bedroom has a queen bed and there's a queen size blow up mattress to accommodate a third or fourth person. Paul has restored old buildings going on fifteen years. He eats, sleeps and breaths old buildings, architecture and design. We've put so much work into making the space just right, and we think you'll agree.
In the main living space you'll find two orange barrel chairs with accompanying hand made shaker style walnut end tables, a sugar maple butcher block dining table made from flooring from a local landmark school, and Persian rugs. The floors are beautiful reclaimed doug fir from a catholic priest house that was recently demolished. All the woodwork, the butcher block countertops and tables, maple cabinets, maple vanity, shaker end tables (basically everything you see) were all made by Paul in the second floor of our garage workshop. During the day Paul's a high school industrial arts teacher and teaches several furniture making, design and construction classes.
The kitchen has a high quality European brand stainless steel gas range, small refrigerator, and deep-basin stainless steel sink. The kitchen is stocked with quality cookware. We also supply organic coffee and a french press. The kitchen is pretty small, but adequate for light cooking.
The bedroom is spacious and overlooks the forested bluffs of the Oneota Valley. And to boot there's a spectacular 200 year old bur oak tree that sits right outside the bedroom windows. The bedroom has a firm queen bed, a reading area, and clothes closet. A third or fourth person can be accommodated on a queen size blow up air mattress. Linens and bedding are provided.
The spacious bath has a floor to ceiling subway tile shower. The bathroom flooring is Marmoleum, a traditional petroleum free, linseed oil-based linoleum invented in Britain in the early 1850s that's made to look like marble. The hand made vanity is sugar maple with a white oak butcher block top. Bath towels, Nature's Gate shampoo, conditioner and body wash are provided.
The house was built in the early 1850s by Decorah's original founding family, the Days from upstate New York. When their son Claiborne built the house a few years later, the village of Decorah wasn't more than a few log houses and a saw mill. Claiborne was the entrepreneurial type, serving as Decorah's first postmaster. He also owned a lumberyard and built several houses around town. Today it survives as one of the few remaining structures of the period. Ever since Paul was a little kid he's had his eye on this house. And when it came available, we jumped at the opportunity to buy and restore it. Of all the buildings representative of Decorah's early settlement period that remain standing, this house is probably the most intact and best preserved. It's an incredible piece of local history.
You'll have access to the entire second floor of the house accessed through a separate entrance. Once inside the entryway, the staircase takes you up to the apartment. We live downstairs and our unit is accessed through a separate entrance on the side porch.
We have a friendly dog Mabel and a kitty Ethelbert. Both have never been upstairs, but note that we live downstairs. The unit is heated and cooled with a ductless heat pump, so the air between upstairs and down is separate and doesn’t mix.
- "We loved the attention to detail and location of this property. We found everything we needed stocked in this home. Very clean and great communication from hosts. It is in a good location. We enjoyed walking to the downtown area. We would definitely like to stay here again."

- "this property is in a quiet beautiful neighborhood and location is perfect. Upon arriving the perfectly manicured and well maintained yard was very welcoming. The inside is spacious, very neat and tidy and cozy. We took rode bikes with us and there is a garage with plenty of space to safely store our bikes while we explored Decorah. Hopefully our next visit we will be able to rent here again. Will definitely recommend it to my friends and family. It was awesome. Thank you Amanda. Cozy authentic log cabin, with front porch for relaxing and visiting. Located on highway 18 on the edge of town, but not in the woods. There is a loft bed accessed by stairs above the kitchenette, with a queen size bed. Since it is a loft, the ceiling is low and space is limited, but comfy. The stairs to the loft are somewhat steep, but manageable with a little care. Couch pulls out for additional bed, love seat and tv on the main floor with netflicks for movie watching. There is also WiFi for your enjoyment. Full sized refrigerator, table & chairs, microwave, basic dishes, and Kerig coffee maker with assorted coffees. Bathroom with shower, towels and basic toiletries. Small patio on the back with high table and chairs, with a privacy fence. Bonfire area with two Adirondack chairs. This is a NO animals allowed property and No smoking/vaping allowed inside any buildings. Contractor reservations need prior approval with host.
- "Great place!" - "Perfect cabin" - "My overall stay was great could have stayed alot longer! Place was clean well prepared with everything we needed, view was great location was good and i will definitely recommend and be staying again! My hosts were fantastic!!" - "This property is close to the event center in West Union and was perfect for family to stay for a wedding. The property is small but very clean!" - "This cabin property worked very well for our visit in town West Union for a wedding at the Rustic Chic Event Center and reception at the West Union Event Center. It was also close to some state parks and campgrounds for hiking and kayaking. We struggled to find a state or county park open for swimming. The only reason we did a four star on a couple items is because we thought it would be a little more secluded or in the country, but it's really inside town towards the edge; however, the owners did a great job with the patio making it feel as secluded as possible."

- "Enjoyed a Memorial Weekend stay at this property. Host is helpful and responsive. Small cabin with beautiful views and wildlife. A little out of the way but an easy drive to nearby towns. If it’s peace and quiet you want this is a wonderful choice. " - "Trevor was a great host and communicated well. This cabin was exactly what we needed, a weekend to get away and unplug. It was private and peaceful with amazing country views. It also has a small trail cutout through the prairie that is nice for morning or evening walks! You are welcome to stay in our owner-built timber frame solar powered home with us. Sophie's room is upstairs, along with a sitting room. We'll share the main floor with you, which includes the bathroom, kitchen, and living room.
The space
We were early adopters of solar energy, having been off the grid since 1989. Daniel is pretty darned knowledgeable about many things having to do with alternative energy, sawdust toilets, gardening, building, wood splitting, rainwater collection, and more. Our home is a warm place of wood (mostly local) and old things made well in the distant past. We live by the maxim "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without" and this makes space for much beauty.
Guest access
Everything where we live on 29 acres, plus walking trails through the woods to the creek and our neighbors at ReRooted Connections.
During your stay
We're likely to bump into each other, sharing a bathroom and kitchen and the outside spaces. If you want privacy you'll stay in the bedroom, go out into the woods, or go to town.

It wasn't in the best condition and it wasn't easy to clean or repair, so we bought a new camper together and run the new one as efficiently as possible. We feel that in the last 2 years of operating the 2.0 camper we should have at least a 4.9 rating as we work very hard to please our guests!
