A charming Grade II listed former Chapel in a tucked away peaceful location
Cottage
Bradford-on-Avon, England, United Kingdom

Luxuriously appointed the Old Chapel provides a comfortable and tranquil base from which to explore the delights of Somerset and Wiltshire. With the charming town of Bradford-on-Avon on your doorstep and the Georgian city of Bath close by as well as Longleat, Stonehenge, Castle Combe and many more great attractions you won't be short of things to do. Equipped to a high standard with pocket sprung mattresses, crisp cotton sheets and fluffy towels the Old Chapel provides a great base from which to explore.

The Chapel is situated on the Bath side of Bradford-on-Avon in a tucked away location. It is a lovely quiet spot in an historic row of stone cottages. Parking (which is unrestricted) is on a nearby minor road and although there is a narrow road in front of the Chapel it is not advisable to drive down it as it is very easy to get stuck! It is only a 50m walk from the parking to the front door. You can easily walk to the town centre which is approximately a 15 minute walk, downhill. Please be aware that it is a steep walk back up the hill. Alternatively you could take a bus or taxi. There are a couple of pubs 5-10 minutes walk away, without having to walk down into town. The Castle also serves breakfast. There is an excellent Co-Op supermarket 5 minutes walk away which is open everyday from 6am to 10pm.
On the ground floor is the kitchen/diner and living room. The kitchen is well equipped; from kitchen scales and sharp knives to garlic crushers and hand mixer. There is an induction hob, electric fan assisted oven, cooker hood, fridge freezer, dishwasher, washer/dryer, small microwave and coffee machine.
The sitting room, has a TV, DVD player, comfortable sofa and armchair and is perfect for relaxing in the evening in front of the gas effect fire. There is a cupboard containing a few board games, children's toys, DVD's and novels. The first floor has a shower room with toilet, basin and shower and a bedroom with kingsize bed, floor length curtains and black out curtains. . On the second floor there are two single (3ft) beds which can be made into a superking. There are black-out blinds on the velux windows and reading lights next to the bed. The bed linen is all high quality cotton. The bath and hand towels are all thick, white and fluffy. The house is gas centrally heated.
I like my guests to feel completely at home, and so the cupboards are stocked with basics such as tea, coffee, sugar, olive oil for cooking. I also supply milk and one or two bits and pieces for the beginning of each stay.

Guest Reviews:

If parking next to the property and a back garden are not essential then this is a great base for a family of four or two couples. One of the best places I've stayed at in the last 10 years." - "This former chapel is so cozy and lovingly furnished, everything is harmonious. It was a wonderfully relaxing few days here. We enjoyed it so much and maybe we like to stay here once again and definitely we will recommend it to our friends."

- "The property was amazing. It was very clean, very convenient, and very comfortable. The bedrooms were spacious, the plumbing worked very well. A three-minute walk to the train station and absolutely beautiful surroundings. Laundry was a real plus! Hosts were on top of things 100%. Communication was quick, questions answered completely. We will be coming back in April because we just didn't have time to enjoy everything completely. The local pub had excellent food and was a five-minute walk. The local market carries everything you need for meals, should you want to cook. I can't recommend this place highly enough--it was fantastic. The parking was a little tight, but you don't really need a car with the train station so close (coming from the U.S., we relied on trains, although most people in the neighboring cottages did have cars--they had no issues, but they are accustomed to the narrow roads, etc., and we weren't). A truly wonderful experience, and one I will repeat."

Leigh Bake House - Picture-perfect Grade 2 listed cottage
Cottage
Bradford on Avon, Somerset, United Kingdom

Summary
Set within its own private walled garden Sleeps 4 in one double room and and a family room with a double and a single bed Lovely lounge with wood-burning stove Dining table and 5 chairs Access to on site state of the art gym and sauna 10 min walk into historic Bradford on Avon 2 on site parking spaces Minimum 3 night stay during peak seasons pets Negotiable - please contact the office to discuss
This Grade II listed ancient dwelling dates back to the 14th Century. The old bread oven and meat/ fish smoking oven are still evident and the old stone floor bears the marks of the axe where the wood was cut to fuel the fires. Leigh House is believed to date from 1574 and was part of a farm estate given by Elizabeth I to Robert Leigh. The property extends over 4.5 acres and includes the Tithe Barn and the Bake House. It was a wealthy estate in its day and the depth of the well in the courtyard indicates that it was a property of significant importance. In the early Eighteenth Century it was owned by Robert Taylor who lived in the main house and manufactured cheeses in the cheese loft, now a bedroom over the kitchen. It was converted in 2006 and has been completely refurbished by the current owners who have retained the original features, selected fine furnishings and original works of art.

The Bake House (sleeps 4)

The Bake House is reached through an old latchet gate beneath arched boughs and opens into a courtyard with topiary trees, lavender beds and a pretty fountain tumbling into a pond of water lilies. Beautifully furnished, this compact cottage style home has been painted throughout with Farrow and Ball paints and has a comfortable 'L' shaped sofa and armchair to seat 4 and large TV with DVD. There is a cosy wood burning stove in the old fireplace with a window seat and curtains in Ian Mankin fabrics. There is a pull out dining table with 5 chairs The downstairs double bedroom has beamed ceilings and its own original fireplace (no longer in use). One window opens onto the courtyard whilst the other overlooks the potager and walled garden. There is an oak wardrobe, an oak framed bedstead and a little hand basin with fluffy white towels. The room upstairs has a spacious king sized bed under oak beamed ceilings, two oak bedside tables, chest of drawers and hanging space. A hand basin under the window looks down across the Victorian green house to the vegetable garden..
The little kitchen overlooks the central courtyard and has a gas hob, with electric oven and grill, a microwave and small fridge. The newly renovated bathroom has a large walk in shower, a hand basin and WC.

The Old Dairy

The former dairy has been renovated to encompass a state of the art gym including resistance machines, free weights, treadmill and rowing machine. There is a large sauna and shower for your use. We have a resident Personal Trainer who trains private clients during the week and is available to guests by prior arrangement. The facilities are available every evening and weekend when the PT is not on site and are shared with the owners and other resident guests.

The Grounds

In this rural setting, The Barn, The Bake House and Leigh House, (the owner's residence) are clustered in a 'u' shape around an idyllic planted courtyard with the original well that supplied the farm. These wonderful old buildings are surrounded by cobbled paths, gardens, orchard, paddocks and fields with southerly views towards Salisbury Plains and The Whitehorse at Westbury . Behind the Bake house is a large secure walled garden with a lavender walkway leading to a rose arbour and plans for a pottager with flowers, fruit, veg and herbs. There are outdoor tables and benches dotted all around the grounds so as to relax and take in the country air. Pick your own apples, pears and plums from the Orchard or head towards a large south facing paddock with lovely views, seating and BBQ area. Bring wellies for lovely local walks into Bradford-on- Avon (just 10 mins. away)or longer walks to South Wraxhall.

Helpful Information

Local Babysitters are available and come with the recommendation of the owners who use them for their own family.

Guest Reviews:

- "Lovely property manager. Approachable and helpful." - "A lovely, peaceful place, full of character, with everything we needed. The information provided seemed to be generic for several different properties so it might be more useful to have one specifically for this one. Once on site, parking was a little limited (we had been warned though) and the entrance surprisingly challenging to find. Unfortunately we couldn't work out how to use the sauna but the log burner kept us super toasty. Thankyou for a lovely time."

- "The cottages are beautiful - they have been well thought out and have a lovely farm feel to them. Everything was clean and there was lots of kitchen equipment for our use. We felt some areas could use a little TLC - the private patio was lovely but a little overgrown and could really benefit from an occasional jet wash. Some Of the slabs moved a little underfoot and there were lots of weeds in the shingle. A few slats were missing from one of our single beds - but overall very good"

Guest Reviews:

- "The cottage is very well equipped (good pans in the kitchen!), spotlessly clean, comfortable and within walking distance of everything you need. A super place to stay and the owners were quick to communicate and very helpful." - "Such a lovely place. The outside was rather plain. But the kitchen just smashed us. Everything spelled out Fifties, just missing the typical housewife. Adorable. Beautiful and clean house with all necessities. Unfortunately located in a one-way-street you have to park your car elsewhere but locatons were supplied. We used Bradford-on-Avon to explore locations like Bath and Wiltshire. Perfect."

Please be aware that the walk back home is up a steep hill . Alternatively you could take a bus or taxi. There are a couple of pubs 5-10 minutes walk away, without having to walk down into town and there is an excellent Co-Op supermarket 5 minutes walk away which is open everyday from 6am to 10pm.

The first floor has a shower room with toilet, basin and shower and a bedroom with kingsize bed, floor length curtains and black out curtains. . On the second floor there are two single (3ft) beds . There are black-out blinds on the velux windows and reading lights next to the bed. The bedlinen is all high quality cotton.

Guest access
The Chapel has a key-safe so visitors can access the property independently. I live nearby (a 5 minute drive away) so am always on hand if needed. I can also be contacted by phone or email should any issues arise.
As a guest you have sole access to the whole house (apart from one locked cupboard which houses the boiler). As well as a TV and DVD's there are; cookbooks, guidebooks of the area, board games, hairdryers and a few novels. I also leave an information pack with instructions for walking into town, train and bus timetables, shops, places to see and eat etc.

Other things to note
The Chapel doesn't have its own designated parking space but there is plenty of unrestricted parking on a minor road just 50 m away.

The space

The Lodge offers all the home comforts you should need in a home from home way, also offering a log fire for those cosy nights.
The Lodge allows for families to stay in the form of a sofa bed but is also just as well set up for a romantic break for just 2.

1750s cottage nr Bath, Cotswolds with garden
Cottage
Wiltshire

A beautiful 1750s cottage in Bradford on Avon, voted by the Sunday Times as the best town to live, just 5 miles from Bath. 4 bed cottage, sleeps nine. Surrounded by amazing countryside walks and countryside pubs. Nestled in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Beauty there are endless day trips for those wanting to soak up the beautiful Bath stone villages and country side walks.

Corporate rates available after first booking. Enquire for discounted rates for repeat bookings

The space
In the cottage there are two rooms with double beds and 1 room with a double and a single, so in total the cottage sleeps 7. In addition there is a lovely light and airy studio in the garden which sleeps 2.

Travel cots can be provided, and an additional single mattress on floor if accommodating smaller children. Works well for couples, small groups of friends or families.

The cottage oozes character with exposed wooden beams throughout the property, mullion windows all carefully crafted from Bath Stone, and the original staircase and floor boards in some of the rooms. It has a cosy wood burner for winter stays, and a small but perfectly formed garden to enjoy on sunny days. There is use of a BBQ in the garden and charcoal is provided.

A total of 9 can stay. The cottage sleeps 7 and there is a lovely studio in the garden with a kingsize bed sleeping an additional 2. The garden studio has tea making facilities and a sofa so the group can spread out. It is light and airy. There is no bathroom in the outbuilding so guests staying here would need to use the bathroom in the cottage.

For larger groups - While there is plenty of bedroom space for 9, Please note that the lounge area is not large. There are 5 soft sofa type seats. The table can be extended to accommodate 8/9. There are 9 kitchen chairs (4 permanently in lounge and the remainder are foldy ones in the porch) and you can bring them in if you are having a sit down meal. Most larger groups on shorter stays are out for dinner and the cottage represents a good value place to stay for this size group. There is also an extra sofa/ hang out opportunity in the garden studio so this works well particularly with families with teenagers who love to have their own space or people who like a bit more space when away with a larger group.

The stairs are original and quite steep. People with mobility issues may however find the stairs difficult.

Stairgates are provided if young children require them but please let us know in advance so we can put them up. We have many families with young children stay.

Adult slippers are provided but we recommend packing some for the kids.

Guest access
Guests have access to the entire cottage which is only used as a holiday cottage. It will have all the things you need without the clutter of the owner who lives there part of the time..

The outbuilding houses the washer and tumble dryer. It can be accessed via a side path that runs along the back of the row of cottages. At ' peak' times with back to back changeovers the cleaners may access this path between 9-3pm to change over loads of washing. They will be in and out in 5-10 minutes and will not access the cottage or the top studio , just the utility room underneath the studio.

There is also an extra fridge freezer in the outbuilding under the stairs for those with larger groups or longer stays who need more space.

Other things to note
The stairs are the original ones and are quite steep. I can put stair gates at the top and bottom of the stairs for safety should your party include young children but please let me know in advance if this is needed. Further if your party includes people with mobility issues, sore knees they may find them difficult.

Further, the access to the toilet/bathroom is unusual, lets say, with a step across from a landing. I have had only two guests out of over 500 bookings feedback that this was a challenge, a heavily pregnant lady and someone with an elderly member of their party who had mobility issues. Please bear this in mind when deciding if this is a suitable place for your party. I have pictures of the stairs and the access to the bathroom on the listing so you can make your own decisions. Groups with children have so far not had any issues with it at all to date, though I am sure they are supervising them.

Well behaved dogs are now allowed. but please do not leave them unattended in case they are anxious and cause damage. There is a £30 additional fee towards cleaning.

Amenities:

Courtyard view • Free washer – In building • Shampoo • Hair dryer • Essentials • Free dryer – In unit • Garden view • Body soap • Cleaning products • Hot water

Originally stables from the 1200s, then converted into a cottage c.1910 and newly renovated in 2021 it makes the perfect, comfortable place to either explore everything nearby across Somerset, Wiltshire and Bath; or simply retreat here for a few days to escape the world!

PLEASE NOTE THIS PROPERTY IS NOT SUITABLE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 10.

Although self-catering, guests benefit from next door Iford Manor Kitchen, with its own café & bakery on site, as well as a restaurant. Note the opening days & times change throughout the year so please check their website for opening hours.

Perfect for your morning coffee and freshly baked pastry! Whilst not typically open in the evenings, our restaurant does host regular Friday evening supper clubs, pizza nights and food workshops so do check out 'what's on' on the Iford website and plan your visit accordingly.

Guests also enjoy access to the world-famous, Grade I registered, Iford Manor Gardens from dusk until 4pm each day during your stay (even when closed to the public).

You also have a small, south-facing patio garden of your own, with seating area and BBQ. Perfect for watching the abundant local wildlife (bats, owls etc), or stargazing on a clear night.

A few short steps from the front gate and you will be on the famous Iford Manor bridge (as featured in ITV's Sanditon, 2019) overlooking the River Frome. Very quiet in the evenings you can regularly spot otters, beavers, herons, swans, kingfishers, egrets and more whilst sat there.

There are many wonderful pubs and restaurants close to us. Either a short drive away, or you can walk (30mins) to The New Inn at Westwood, or The Inn at Freshford. The Iford Cider Taphouse serving homemade pizzas and our ciders (and other drinks) is a short walk away and open at certain times of the year.

With 3 miles of footpaths through the Iford Manor Estate you can easily reach Westwood Manor (NT), Farleigh Castle (English Heritage), the stunning villages of Avoncliff and Freshford, or even walk as far as Bradford on Avon. Hop in your car to easily reach Bath, Frome, Bruton, Lacock, Stonehenge and many other nearby places to explore.

From Bradford on Avon, turn off the B3109 into Westwood (follow brown signs to Iford Manor). After leaving the village and its 20mph zone, the road bends to the right. Turn left down the little lane and follow it to the bridge at the bottom. Park in the visitor car park next to the bridge.

The Iford Manor visitor car park entrance is opposite the front entrance to Rowley Cottage, so just a few steps from your own private front gate.

From there you can easily access its Grade 1 listed gardens from sunrise until 4pm each day. Iford Manor Gardens is shared at all times with us as a family and the team that work here.
