The beds are comfortable, the view is lovely, and, the beach is easily accessed from the cottages. What made our stay *extra* special, however, was the warmth, wit, and, hospitality of our lovely host. First, he gave us a courtesy call to provide specific directions to the property, then, called us again to let us know about an event happening nearby at the time of our stay, in case we wanted to attend. He is a lovely human being, who seems to genuinely enjoy people. We were very proud to share the beauty of Nova Scotia with our California friends, especially the beauty of the human landscape (-thank you, Colin!). During our stay, the weather was chilly, overcast, rainy, and foggy, but, the warmth of this property’s owner, and the simple, yet, charming accommodations he offers, will bring us back again.- next time, for a longer, sunnier, summer stay."

This architect-designed cottage is built on a bluff over the ocean and was designed to recall the best aspects of Maritime tradition, but to modernize them with an open-concept interior. It has a summer-y feeling, with a high ceiling, boarded walls and fresh white paint.

Sunsets will knock your socks off. This design is best suited for couples, or couples with one or two children. All on a gorgeous property with 3 large ponds and 2 spring-fed brooks. You'll have a tough time leaving the cottage!

Fishermen haul their lobster traps each year out in front of our cottage. Moose, eagles, deer and foxes are regulars. It's easy to meet people here, and the daily pace here is slower than in most cities. Cape Breton summers are warm-to-hot in the day, but perfect in the evening, and at the shore there are lovely ocean breezes.

Guest Reviews:

- "I cannot begin to describe how truly amazing our vacation was on Cape Breton Island. First, our hosts Stewart and Bell were so gracious and accommodating. Stewart spent over an hour with us going over the many exciting things to do in the area and made dining recommendations that were spot on. It was a very peaceful and relaxing escape for us. There were so many enjoyable aspects of our time here. We would have to include the views from the deck of the cottage as one of the truly memorable parts of the trip. Each night the sunsets were amazing. We very much appreciated the tranquility of the location. The hiking, the beaches and friendly local residents all added to the enjoyment of the trip. This is a rare find and I would happily return any time. I highly recommend this property."

Bell grew up in nearby Margaree Valley, while I grew up in Toronto and have lived here full-time for 30 years. This cottage that has all of the charm of our original SeaSky cottage, but adds an extra (separate) bedroom.

The Cape Cottage was designed specifically for visitors' pleasure and needs. You will enjoy complete seclusion and incredible views in one of the most spectacular parts of Cape Breton. As day turns to evening in technicolor, relax, listen to music or catch up on things you don't have time for at home.

Chimney Corner beach is one of the finest on the island, and it's mostly unoccupied during the week– in addition to the fine beach and safe swimming for children, there are interesting rock formations to explore nearby. Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and you'll find the scenery on this stretch of coastline particularly striking.

There is a rich, strong culture here, historically and musically, and life unwinds at its own special pace. Although a three-day visit to the Island is not uncommon, it takes more time to really get a sense of the rhythms and charm of Cape Breton. Cape Breton summers are warm-to-hot in the day, but perfect in the evening, with lovely ocean breezes.

Guest Reviews:

- "The house is open and bright, set on a hillside overlooking the coast below. Private and quiet, an excellent getaway. Many local places to visit and explore for hiking, biking, dinners out. We enjoyed live music of the region and nearby Highlands National Park for hiking. Knowledgeable and helpful host." - "The cape house is simply lovely. Sits up on a hill overlooking the water. Sunsets out your window. The house itself has been tastefully decorated and has everything you’d want for a week. It’s a drive to get anywhere but that’s the nature of Cape Breton. Sitting on that beautiful coast gives you access to wonderful beaches, the national park, hiking and music. The host meets you on day one and lays out a map and list of things to do and see, where to eat and where not to eat. He was spot-on with his recommendations. The only issue we had was a booking snafu. After reaching out far in advance we were asked what Friday-Friday dates we wanted. We picked a summer week and was told to reach out in November again to confirm but they’d be saved for us. We did and received a lease for the stay. We signed the lease and planned a 3 week vacation around the rental. What I didn’t notice was the lease was changed to a Sunday-Sunday rental. Same weekends but two days later. This was not pointed out to me. Because of this, we had to leave a day earlier than planned and find other last minute accommodation for two nights when I finally noticed the change months later. I wish he had noted he needed to change the dates when sending us the lease agreement. I wish I had checked the dates on the lease. We wound up paying for a night we couldn’t stay and losing a beautiful day in Cape Breton."

- "Excellent stay in this cute and well-furnished cabin. The property is clean and very well-maintained. Stewart was delightful and extremely helpful while respecting our privacy. The cabin is perfect for a couple wanting a place to stay close to the Cabot Trail and other local sights. The view from the porch (when there wasn’t fog), is exceptional. I do recommend an SUV for the steep road up to the cabin." - "Deep Blue Sea is a rustic and charming cabin perched on the side of a mountain overlooking the sea and coastline. The owner built it with his own two hands (and maybe a couple of others), and can tell you all about its history, as well as just about anything else you might want to know about Cape Breton. Privacy is assured by its location nestled in the woods on 3 sides. It is kept immaculately clean, and any issues or questions are dealt with quickly and efficiently. Highly recommended!"

The cottage was very clean and freshly updated with a welcoming, beachy decor. The beds were extremely comfortable, the kitchen is very well equipped, and lots of extras were provided that are helpful to travelers. We loved having the washer and dryer. We stayed 9 nights and never had a shortage of things to do. From the cottage you are just minutes away from all that the west side has to offer! Angela was very communicative and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would be happy to return!"

Cape Breton Cottage, Off the Beaten Path. Spectacular Ocean and Mt. Views!
Cottage
Victoria, Subd. A, Nova Scotia, Canada

If you are looking for something off the beaten path, you have found it! Out at the northern tip of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, the cottage is located at St. Margaret's village, in Bay St. Lawrence. From the 8x28 foot front deck you have a panoramic, unobstructed, undeveloped view as the sun sets into the ocean. In season, you can enjoy the local lobster or snow crab caught in the bay in front of you.

Not far off the Cabot Trail, the cottage is a good base for golf at Highland Links in Ingonish (one of the top-rated courses in the world), whale watching or deep sea fishing from the nearby fisherman's wharf or the Hike the Highlands Festival. Cape Breton Highlands National Park is just 10 miles away where there are hiking trails and other activities in the summer. Our family spots at least one moose and one bear at this park every year! It is a thrill for the kids!

Right in the village is a friendly community center with internet access (as well as ping pong for the kids and a basketball hoop). There is a local grocery with all the basics. Right near the community center is an ice cream stand that is great for a quick dinner as well.

It is a birdwatchers paradise. Watch the eagles soar, the guillemots fly in and out of the cliffs below, or the gannets dive into the ocean from the cottage. You might even see the occasional pod of whales in the bay while you sit relaxing or reading on the deck.

We hike, blueberry pick, whale watch (have spotted from the deck many times), fish, golf kayak, swim and enjoy the local restaurants. We will be back (again)!" - "This was our 2nd visit back to this amazing part of the world, and we loved it. The location is perfect for an East coast experience, and the cabin is simple and very comfortable with all of the basics covered…it is the exact balance that we want to unplug and unwind, and we will certainly will continue to cherish our time there for years to come!! We wouldn’t change a thing and would highly recommend this gem!"

These are some of the most spectacular vistas in all of Cape Breton: endless ocean, beach and Sea Wolf Island (framed perfectly, as if for your personal pleasure!) You don't just enjoy the views- you hear the ocean beside you, lapping at the rocks below, sometimes crashing; it's almost hypnotizing. Check our short video in the "Photos" section.

The supple leather couch in the living room is the perfect spot for connecting with friends, (which is easier than ever, with a fast fibre op internet/ wifi connection). Dig into a good book, or just enjoy the view. You can watch storms develop on the horizon, and play themselves out before they ever reach you. As evening turns to night, relax and take in the starry night skies, and steady cadence of the flashing light of the island lighthouse. Most summer evenings -many with brilliant sunsets- are cool with breezes, which are great for sleeping.

Guest Reviews:

- "Truly heaven on earth! Stewart was an excellent host. He shared the best hikes, restaurants, and local events to visit while we were on vacation. The house was beautiful, clean with spectacular views. We look forward to coming back soon." - "The photos tell the story — a cosy and comfortable cottage in a great setting. Good for anyone looking for "ocean" proximity and privacy. The place is very thoughtfully appointed and comfortable although there were a few components which we felt needed replacement because of evident wear or functionality (eg. the bedroom dresser, the "back" door, the rusted lounger chairs). These weren't deal breakers but considering the price point, such improvements would give it a notable refresh. The main downside is not the cottage itself but how far away Cape Breton is relative to large East coast cities. (If we were to do it again, we'd fly in and rent a car.)"

The owners are so kind and helpful and gave us a number of suggestions for places to eat and trails to hike. The cabins are fantastic and have everything we needed for our home away from home and even some thoughtful extras. These were so greatly appreciated considering the cabins are a bit of a drive from places to restock. Loved the screened-un porch and sitting there at the end of the day watching the sun set. - "This is the perfect cottage experience for 4 people who like a combination of adventure and solitude. It is a very unique setting, overlooking the quiet harbour (no motor boats!!) which is sheltered by a gorgeous beach from the ocean. We used the kayaks and canoe to get to the beach. It was such a memorable experience. Keith and Lorraine are warm and approachable hosts who gave us lots of tips and welcomed us to their property wholeheartedly. There is lots of space to walk around on the grounds and we even got to see in "Sarah's House", an original family home on the northern tip of Cape Breton Island. It is a fully equipped cottage. We used the BBQ, laundry and the air conditioner while we were there. There was a big TV upstairs but we never used it because our weather was perfect and found no time for TV. Thank you so much Keith and Lorraine !!!"

Cliff Waters Cottage, Private oceanfront secluded relaxation, Pleasant Bay, NS
Cottage
Pleasant Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada

says: "Can't imagine a better accommodation for a visit to Cape Breton", "A trip to repeat!", " Lovely, well equipped cottage in a stunning location",, "Relaxing, coupled with exceptional scenery". Cliff

Waters Cottage in Pleasant Bay is very secluded, yet central to the best of Cape Breton - the Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Highlands National Park, the Gulf of St. Lawrence, whale watching, Pollett's Cove, and Gampo Abbey Buddhist Monastery. Just

off the beaten track this secluded oceanfront retreat on 89 acres of private land has a panoramic view of the ocean, mountains, sunsets, national park, whales, diving gannets, fishermen, stars, and community of Pleasant Bay. There is a sandy beach at the bottom of the hill with both river and ocean swimming. Hiking, sightseeing, whale watching, restaurants, shops, and local craftspeople are all within minutes of Cliff Waters. The cottage is fully equipped, very clean, comfortable and relaxed with a large deck and large windows overlooking the ocean and sunsets. The cottage has an open concept and is best suited to a couple, but is also great for a small family. Pleasant

Bay is a sleepy little fishing village nestled in the foothills of the Highlands National Park. Through winter there is a one-store-town of about 120 people. In summer, fishermen head out to sea and a handful of accommodation, shop, whale tour and restaurant owners open their doors for tourists travelling along the Cabot Trail. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and the locals are easy to talk to. We rely on communities outside of the park - mainly Cheticamp - for services such as groceries, gas, alcohol and banking. There

are many hiking trails, beaches, scenic lookouts, birding and wildlife opportunities, whale tour operators, shops, restaurants, cultural centres, and music venues within a scenic 5 - 45 minute drive of Cliff Waters Cottage. Just
down the road is a Buddhist monastery. Around 25 people live, work and study at the Abbey year round. They meditate daily in a shrine overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and balance their study with a work period in the commune. It is not uncommon to travel the remote road and see nuns and monks walking, maroon robes dancing in the wind - quite a remarkable sight. There is a Stupa of Enlightenment on the Abbey grounds with slogans of wisdom engraved in stone. You can tour the Abbey daily in the afternoon throughout the summer for a small donation. At

the end of the dirt road, a footpath continues along the coast for roughly 9.5 kms to an abandoned settlement named Pollett's Cove. In the early 1900's, large families lived here with fishing and farming as a way of life. There was a school, a lobster canning factory, fishing shacks and houses. Large boats delivered staples such as sugar, tea and molasses in exchange for goods that the community produced. Today local farmers set their cows to pasture here, creating a very green, peaceful and fertile river valley - well worth the hike! The

Cape Breton Highlands National Park is accessible within minutes and the large Park offers a wealth of hiking trails, guided tours and sight seeing opportunities along the Cabot Trail. There is an information booth at both entry points into the Park in Cheticamp and Ingonish. We provide a Park pass free of charge for all guests staying a week or more. Whale

tours depart daily from the harbour. We highly recommend scheduling a tour as the vastness of the undeveloped landscape of our wilderness protected areas and our National Park can be seen in great detail by boat. Whales are extremely common in this area and sightings are guaranteed by most operators. You may travel by fishing boat or by zodiac. We recommend going by zodiac as you can cover so much water quickly. Pick a clear day, and ask the operator to take you up the coast to Pollett's Cove. This

Guest Reviews:

- "If you are considering staying on Cape Breton - stop your search as this is your place! Of the many vacation rentals that we have experienced, this is by far the nicest rental from the property, surrounding, and owners/managers. The owners were on-site to attend to any issue, help start fires for marshmallows, light the wood-fired hot tubs and give directions to hikes, farm shares and fishmongers. Before arriving, we received detailed communications providing useful information regarding locations of grocery stores, restaurants and possible excursions. The "cabin" was perfectly appointed with robes, selection of pillows, laundry, and toiletries. Notable items included basic kitchen staples such as coffee, flour, sugar, salt, pepper, olive oil, vinegar and a full range of spices. Even the cookware was superior (no beat-up teflon pans here!). Then - there is the incredible view of the ocean from virtually any room! A short walk down a well manicured trail leads to a spectacular and secluded sandy beach for swimming. . We were a family of four and stayed in the two bedroom cabin (Cedar). We loved it so much that we requested to extend our stay even though the rental on our next house had already started. Outstanding level of service, communications and attention to detail. A real hidden gem and we shall be returning!"

Check-out: Check-out is no later than 10:00am so we have enough time to properly clean the cottages for our next Guest arrival. A simple check-out checklist must be completed by Guest prior to independently checking out.

Early Check-In/Late Check-Out: During the high season we are unable to accomodate requests for early check-in or late-check out - thank you for your understanding. Outside of our high season, we are happy to try our best to accommodate requests for early check-in or late-check out, when possible but cannot be guaranteed. Please send us a message and we’ll see if it’s possible.

THE PROPERTY:

We have worked hard to create a beautifully designed and comfortable space for Guests, so please treat it with care and respect as you would in your own home. We ask that you please leave the cottages in the manner that you found it.

Occupancy: the cottages can accommodate 6 people MAX including children. Please note, in order to conserve energy and resources we only set out the appropriate number of towels and linens required for the number of Guests noted in the reservation. Unfortunately, that means if you do not properly indicate how many Guests will be staying, chances are there will not be enough towels and linens for everyone and no one likes that on vacation!

Well Water System: Like many houses in the area, these cottages rely on a well water system. While water is plentiful, it’s certainly not unlimited like many city centers so please be conservative with water usage. The water is completely safe to cook with, however, periodically it may have a slight odour or taste that you are not accustomed to, so it is recommended that you bring a supply of bottled water.

Septic System: The septic system is very effective however, it will clog up if improper material is flushed down the toilet. Do not flush anything other than toilet paper and human waste. Strictly no baby wipes, feminine products, etc. should be flushed at any time. These items will clog the septic system and you could be charged for the damages. Not fun while on vacation so please don’t do it!

Outdoor Fire Pit: There is an outdoor fire pit and seating for Guests to enjoy. Prior to burning of any kind, Guests must check to ensure that burning is permitted. Unfortunately, we cannot control when burning is prohibited or limited as this is determined by the fire department. Further instructions are available and can be reviewed upon arrival.

CLEANING/HOUSEKEEPING:

Prior to Arrival: the cottages are thoroughly cleaned and restocked by our trusted partner prior to each Guest arrival.

During Your Stay: There are no daily housekeeping services provided. Soiled towels and bed linens can be placed in laundry hampers. Garbage and recycling needs to be divided and kept into the appropriate bins.

Upon Departure and Check-Out: Please keep the cottages clean and leave it exactly how it was upon your arrival. This includes making sure any furniture, kitchen or household items are placed back where you found them. Soiled towels can be placed in laundry hampers or left in bathtubs/showers. A check-out check list will be provided to ensure nothing is overlooked. In extreme cases, excess cleaning will be deducted from your Security/Damage Deposit.

RYA-2023-24-03271934149500512-432

The space
We inherited this home from my parents who loved to share it. It has a fully equipped kitchen and open concept dining area with an ocean view. Downstairs, it has a TV for playing DVDs only, and a large sectional couch in the seating area which also looks out on the sea. Both levels have a full bathroom.

Ours is a non-smoking property and no fires are permitted.

This is a true cottage, surrounded by nature. Although we work hard to prevent the wildlife from entering the house, ants and even mice are infrequent but possible visitors.

On the property, you may see foxes, raccoons, and many species of songbird. In the cove, we often have eagles - especially during the smelt run. In the sea, you may find oysters, sea stars, crabs (hermit, green and Atlantic rock), jellyfish, and many species of fishes as well as the occasional seal. In the cove, we often have a greater yellow legs (shore bird) and the gannets (seabird) are fun to watch as they soar and dive, hunting for fish.

Guest access
The entire house is yours to use - make yourself at home! We have some boxes and other things stored in 2 closets but that leaves 4 closets for you.

Other things to note
Pets are welcome everywhere but on the furniture.
Please be kind to our septic system and flush only toilet paper.
The cove is accessed by stone stairs that can be challenging if you are at all unsteady on your feet - please take care.

Ours is a non-smoking property.

We'd love to hear how it goes - please don't hesitate to let us know, and please sign our guest book!
