Other things to note
We live in the shed next door while we are building our new house. There may be trade people there working from time to time but the hours they keep are usually 8.00am - 5.00pm. We do apologise if there is some working noise during the day but it should not be excessive at any stage. Work completion should be done by early December 2019.

Welcome to our Twizel Bach, this is an original hydro house in the Twizel township, with a recently renovated kitchen, bathroom and double glazed windows to keep you toasty warm in Winter.

Pet Friendly and only 5 minutes walk to the shops and restaurants. Twizel is a beautiful spot with so much to offer, very close to the lakes for boating and fishing, the gorgeous lagoon for swimming and watersports such as paddleboarding, lots of nearby walking and bicycle tracks.

The cottage has an open plan lounge and kitchen, 3 bedrooms off the lounge.
In the kitchen there is a fold out dining table suitable for eating meals around, portable highchair that can be strapped to a chair is provided for little ones.
The bathroom is new with a big shower and a separate laundry.
The house is older and very compact (70sqm) but has a lovely fully fenced back yard excellent for children and dogs to play and a covered verandah to enjoy a quiet drink on. Outside kitchen great for outdoor dining (tap disconnected in winter due to freezing).

Checking out after 11AM means you incur a full days fee.

A fee of $100.00 will be charged to you as the guest if we are called out to the premises after business hours ( Business hours are 9am-3pm Monday- Friday) unless deemed not liable by our technician.
This will be charged and paid in full prior to your departure or on arrival to the callout. As banking deposits can take up to more than 48hours to be processed.

Other things to note
Check out time of 10am is strict so we can ensure cleaning is completed before check in time. A late check out fee will be charged if you depart after 10am unless a late check out is arranged prior.
Checking out after 11AM means you incur a full days fee.

A fee of $100.00 will be charged to you as the guest if we are called out to the premises after business hours ( Business hours are 9am-3pm Monday- Friday) unless deemed not liable by our technician.
This will be charged and paid in full prior to your departure. As banking deposits can take up to more than 48hours to be processed.

Come and experience the stunning Mackenzie High Country and treat yourself with a relaxing stay at one of our two cosy , high-quality cottages. They are designed to bring the feel of the surrounding landscape right inside - with natural colours and materials. Enjoy and soak up the stunning night sky from our outside bath or admire the millions of sparkly stars through a large ceiling window in the master bedroom at night.

The space
Our cottage was built and opened in 2019 and was a labour of love by my partner, the builder / creator and myself, who helped with vision, design and finishing touches. The most outstanding features of our first cottage are probably the large stargazing window in the master bedroom, the tiled bathroom with underfloor heating, the outside hottub, the cosy window seat and decking areas... but ultimately it is you, the guest who decides what is most outstanding to you.

Other details to mention are that there are two carpeted bedrooms (a king and a single room with a pull-out bed option), wooden floors of all common spaces and wooden ceiling across the whole house with great insulation and plenty of heating options to give you that cosy cottage feel. The bathroom also provides a washing machine and ironing facilities.

The cottage also holds a fully equipped kitchen with appliances such as a glass-top stove, oven, microwave, fridge, dishwasher, Nespresso machine, toaster and kettle and all kinds of utensils beverages (teas and coffees) and spices / sauces - whatever you need make yourself feel right at home and cook up a meal if you chose to.

The lounge area comfortable sits 3 people and also offers a large screen Android Smart TV with Netflix as well as a number of (board) games, cards and books. For our youngest visitors there are books and toys tucked away in some baskets below the TV area.

We also provide infant gear including travel cot and bedding, screw-on high chair, kids dinner ware, baby bath, kids toilet seat etc. and we are happy to set these up for you if required.

Generally our cottage sleeps 3 people comfortably and a fourth pull-out bed is available and can be set up in the smaller room.

We also offer free, fast wifi internet should you decide to bring your work with you or if you need to attend important online meetings while relaxing in the stunning Mackenzie High Country away from your busy home town.

Our second cottage is currently still under construction and we are aiming to making it available to our visitors from December 2023.

Guest access
You will have the entire cottage to yourself and the outside space is completely separate from the space the property owners occupy. We are very happy to meet and greet you, but we are also very respectful of your privacy during your time at Kowhai Cottage.

The stunning Night Sky Cottages are now available for your exclusive use. Exclusive use means you are booking both “Kea Cottage” and “Kahu Cottage” and full use of all their facilities including the Stoked stainless steel double outdoor gas heated bath tub.
Located on the outskirts of the Twizel township, close enough to be able to easily enjoy the local restaurants and cafes but perfectly positioned to spend the evening viewing the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.

The space
Each of the cottages are fully self contained.

Kahu & Kea Cottages are luxury one bedroom cottages complete with well-equipped full size kitchens. There’s an oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, toaster and jug. Tea, coffee, salt, pepper, herbs and cooking oil are supplied. There’s free wifi & a large screen TV and both cottages have double glazed windows, a log burner and a heat pump to keep you toasty warm during the cooler months or air conditioning for those long hot summer nights.

Kahu Cottage has a fabulous cedar clad, double stainless steel bath set in beautiful garden surroundings just off the bedroom deck. Relax under the clear night sky; watch the Milky Way rise overhead, look for falling stars and follow satellites across the night sky. Kahu has a spacious open plan lounge & dining room opening onto a private deck with garden & mountain views. There’s also a comfy sofa in a sunny nook off the entrance and near the back deck, from where you can also relax and watch the sun go down. Kahu has a super-king bed with an electric blanket and a large walk-in-wardrobe with plenty of storage space, luggage rack and an armchair with side table. The bathroom includes shower, toilet, vanity, fan heater & a heated towel rail. The fully equipped laundry has it’s own room beside the nook. There is no guest access to Kahu’s garage.

Kea Cottage is smaller than Kahu but just as luxurious & very private. The lounge and dining area are cosy & compact, the lounge opens out onto the front deck with garden & mountain views. Kea also has magnificent views across farmland to Ben Ohau (the mountain that gives the range its name) and further on to the Ohau Range. An outdoor table, chairs & BBQ are located on the south side of the cottage in a private courtyard. Kea has a king bed with an electric blanket and a large walk-in wardrobe with plenty of storage space, a luggage rack, armchair and side table. The bathroom includes a shower, toilet, vanity, fan heater & a heated towel rail. The washing machine is also located in the bathroom, the drier is out in the mudroom off the end of the carport. Kea Cottage also has its own picket fenced cottage garden.

Both cottages have great views of Ben Ohau Range, and the spectacular sunrises & fabulous sunsets the high country is famous for. Night Sky Cottages- as the name suggests- are right beneath the magnificent night sky of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. During winter you may even catch sight of the Aurora Australis, the Southern Lights (aka Lady Aurora) dancing on the southern horizon.

Guests have access to the surrounding lawns, herb garden, spinach and strawberry patch, gooseberry, blackberries & currant canes (when in season) & a large wild flower garden. Feel free to use the herbs & vegetables and to pick the berries & flowers (leaving enough for following guests of course!)

Twizel is the heart of the Mackenzie High Country and the cottages are a perfect base for guests to explore the fabulous Mackenzie Basin and enjoy the great outdoors. With five large lakes, numerous rivers and several dozen kilometres of turquoise blue canals within a 50km radius, there’s plenty of places to enjoy your favourite watersport or fish for that trophy trout or salmon.

The world famous A2O (Alps to Ocean) Cycle Track passes through Twizel, and in fact section three of the trail- Twizel to Lake Ohau- passes the cottages’ front gate on its way to the lake (stay in Kahu Cottage and relax those weary bodies in our outdoor bathtub right under the stars).

Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, the Hooker Valley & Tasman Glacier are just 40 minutes drive away (Twizel is the closest village to Mt Cook). Lakes Tekapo, Alexandrina, McGregor and the Mt John Observatory just 50 minutes drive.

To the south, Lake Ohau, Omarama’s Clay Cliffs, the Upper Waitaki Lakes and the Ahuriri Valley are all within easy reach by vehicle and are also less than an hour’s drive away. Lake Ruataniwha, the Ohau Canals & Lake Benmore are all just a few kilometres away on the outskirts of Twizel.
