Hullo from Gough’s Bay!

THE COTTAGE

The Shearers’ Quarters Cottage was originally built as worker accommodation in the 1950s and is situated on a working farm in breathtaking Gough’s Bay. The Cottage has 3 interconnected bedrooms — as was usual in the day — the end bedrooms having direct access to a long verandah outside. The kitchen/living area is much as it would have been when the cottage was originally constructed; with Formica bench tops and table, floor to ceiling cabinetry and delightful pull out ‘bins’ that would once have stored potatoes and flour. Nowadays, it also has a microwave and refrigerator, a heat pump/air conditioner and comfy lounge chairs. The porch overlooks the farmyards, the valley and the pristine bay beyond. An old clawfoot bath tub sits cheekily in the garden.

If you are looking to reconnect with family and friends away from crowds and technology, this spot is for you. Beach walks, bird spotting, magnificent views ahead!

GUEST ACCESS

Our guests have access to the entire cottage and you are welcome to wander down to the beautiful black volcanic sandy beach of Gough's Bay for a walk or surf. On many days, you will only share it with seal pups and birds.

If you’d like to look around the farm, we can point you toward some gorgeous views overlooking the property. Cattle grazes across most of the farm, and there are some areas of native bush. The bird life is amazing! You’re almost guaranteed to see tui, fantail, pukeko, sacred kingfisher and kereru among others.

YOUR HOSTS

We live in the main farmhouse on the property, separate to the Shearers’ Quarters Cottage. If you do require anything, we are available to assist.

THE AREA

Banks Peninsula encompasses two large harbours and many smaller bays and coves. It is home to the Hectors Dolphin among other wildlife, has absolutely heavenly scenery, awesome surf spots and several small settlements — the largest of which is the historic French village, Akaroa. A favourite tourist and cruise ship destination, Akaroa is fit to burst with fabulous shops, cafes, restaurants and water activities.

Gough’s Bay Farm and Shearers’ Quarters Cottage is just over an hour and a half from Christchurch and the airport, and a 25 minute drive from Akaroa.

4WD vehicles are recommended.

Please bear in mind that Gough’s Bay is a working farm with cattle and sheep, and the odd amiable dog. We ask that you leave gates as you find them — closed if they were closed, open if they were open. Please don't hesitate to ask if you are unsure about anything.

Bring your all your own bed linen, pillows, blankets and towels etc.

There is no freezer in the cottage.

As is the Kiwi bach tradition you are expected to clean the house and do the dishes before you leave, and take you rubbish and recycling with you.

Only 90 minutes from Christchurch you will find "LuLu's place" it is a real old school kiwi bach.
We are a twenty minute drive from Akaroa which has a number of amenities and a short distance from a number of walks if you want to explore the rest of the Peninsula.
Lulus place is situated at 907 Le bons bay road on a nice rustic section full of native birds and vegetation.
The property is a 3 minute walk from the beach and the domain that contains a tennis court, kids play ground, flying fox, basketball hoop and rope swing.
It's a happy place for our family and we hope you can enjoy it as much as we do.
The bach has some old school quirks, but is comfortable and homely.
You have the use of 2 bedrooms both with double beds there is also a pull out couch in the lounge, a seperate bathroom and shower and an open plan lounge/kitchen.
At 60sq metres it's not the world's biggest but its dry and cosy.
There is a few mod cons like wifi and a smart TV. But mainly it's about being close to the beach and enjoying one of Banks Peninsulas best bays in a beautiful setting.
It can be cold at nights and heaters are provided. In winter we suggest bringing an extra blanket if you feel the cold it can get a bit chilly.
We provide clean sheets, pillows and duvets on the beds. Also bath mats and kitchen cloths.
Please provide your own towels.

Kanuka Cottage is a rustic, tastefully decorated cottage set in a kanuka wood. It provides absolute privacy and has all the amentities for a quiet 'away from it' retreat. Basic kitchenette , luxury bathroom and wonderful decks with peaceful sounds of the stream and abundant birdlife.
The cottage has a king bed with quality linen and a blissful latex mattress. Cosy warm with a backup portable heater.
Located at Grehan Valley Farm a fews minutes drive from central Akaroa a 10 minute walk.

The space
The space is well formed with a sleeping alcove, ensuite bathroom set down four steps from the bedroom, outside shower, a separate kitchette with a small living space and outside sunny decks. The interior is rustic with lots of character, rough sawn interior timber walls, and an original bath. The exterior has rusty corrugated iron exterior cladding, set in a magic nature filled environment.

Other things to note
The space is not really suitable for children due to the nature of the setting. We have possum traps, rodent bait stations and the ongaonga presents a threat.
Access from the parking area is down a grass driveway about 50 metres with three steps down to the cottage. Inside there are four steps down from the bedroom area into the bathroom. The cottage has a septic tank that uses a macerator pump so nothing but human waste or toilet paper can be put down the toilet.

The Herb Farm Cottage is a world of it's own in rural Grehan Valley. Here in the country garden stream side setting of the former Herb Farm (New Zealand's first opened in 1976) you will find the original cottage with the ground floor studio/bed sitting room and adjoining parlour. Relax and enjoy the special setting of flowers, wishing well, native bird life, frogs, friendly free range chooks, ducks on the pond and a great night sky. All just a 15 minute stroll to the village and seaside.

The space
Of the cottage only the ground floor is available for guests (upstairs owner's storage). The ambience is one of simple storybook rustic charm. Cozy and comfortable inside offset by outdoor dining options and sun loungers in the garden. An abundance of varied books and magazines are on hand in the parlour. Slightly down the garden path (spot lit at night) is a standalone shower room with toilet and hand basin.

No kitchen however we do provide tea and coffee making facilities and toaster and there is a food preparation area so you can whip up a cheeseboard and a picnic. Bottled water provided.

Easy access up the valley to some of Akaroa's best walking tracks. Enjoy a coffee sitting next to the stream with fantails and kereru flying around ancient kahikatea, totara and matai trees.

Other things to note
The cottage is located in a hill valley so on your return walk from the village there is a gentle uphill walk.

The property is not suitable for infants and young children, due to a fast flowing stream bordering the property and a seperate pond.

A sweet, cosy cottage tucked in the valley above Akaroa, amongst a wild and wonderful garden. Beautifully restored and warmed by a toasty fire, it's a charming and comfortable character bach. Located in a tranquil and secluded spot but just a 5 - 10 minute walk down to Rue Lavaud, the sea and the many delights Akaroa has to offer.

The space
Rose Cottage is one of a number of original colonial houses dotted across Akaroa. Built at some stage in the 1870s, it has been extensively restored and now serves as a much loved bach for our family.

The cottage is situated within well established gardens and provides a secluded spot to come home to after a day exploring Akaroa and surrounds.

There are two cosy bedrooms (one upstairs, one down), single bathroom (shower only; no bath sorry) and open plan lounge, dining and kitchen.

There is a fire and firewood that will keep you super toasty, if you need it, or otherwise there is a large heat pump and oil heaters that can be used to heat the house quickly.

The kitchen should have most equipment you need to cook something delicious.

Guest access
The cottage and garden are all yours to enjoy. Feel free to read our books, but please don't take them with you or swap them out. If you find something you really like, but can't quite finish in time, Scorpio Books in Christchurch is a great book store that will probably have what you're after.

2 degrees mobile coverage is patchy, but coverage with Vodafone and Spark is usually fine. There is wifi in the cottage.

Other things to note
The upstairs bedroom has very steep stairs that can't be closed off. They aren't suitable for very small children or someone with mobility issues.

The logburner doesn't have a guard and so, when lit, isn't friendly for little hands

We have had lots of young children stay here without a hitch, but please be wary of this before making a booking and keep a close eye on them.

A delightful very private modern arts and crafts style cottage set in a rural area. It is only a 10 minute walk from Akaroa's main street 1.5 km away. Access is from the grass parking area inside the main gate. The cottage has the sole use of the courtyard.

The property shares a boundary with the Woodhills Track one of Akaroa's recognised walk ways.
The night sky is breathtaking with the stars in their full glory, due to zero light pollution. A truly unique experience.
The Television has Netflix and TV NZ on demand.

A cottage by the sea; an historic village with a hint of French; a tranquil harbour; bays to explore; cafes, wineries and restaurants; village markets; dolphins, penguins, seals and seabirds; bush walks and amazing views. All this and more is within easy reach of our little piece of paradise. A peaceful haven overlooking both harbour and village. Well equipped, comfortable, and clean it's a fabulous base to explore Banks Peninsula or a perfect haven to sit, relax and stroll into town for coffee!

The space
This cottage has an open plan living / dining room and a modernised kitchen with large pantry, hob, oven and full size refrigerator. There is a separate laundry/ utility area , and one bathroom with shower, toilet, vanity and wall mounted fan heater.

There are two double bedrooms - a queen size bed in one room , and a double bed in the other. Quality commercial white cotton linen is included and your bed will be made up for your arrival. Towels, bath mat and kitchen tea towels are provided.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The price quoted for two people is assuming a couple using one bed and one bedroom. If two people are travelling together and wish to use two beds , then there will be an extra linen hire cost and service fee of NZ$55. Please let the host know if you are two guests and need two beds and the fee can be added via the web site before or after booking.

Set on park-like grounds with room to run & play, surrounded by native bush you get the feeling of being miles away from the hustle of the city, yet only a stone's throw from Akaroa beach, cafes & shops, and restaurants.
Pricing doesn't include linen, this is additional. As a Family Holiday Home we allow guests the option of supplying their own linen to keep costs down.

The space
Three comfortable bedrooms rooms provide the following layout;
Bedroom One: Queen Bed
Bedroom Two: King Bed
Bedroom Three: Single Bunks & a king single bed
There is also a port-a-cot & mattress available upon request.

Each room has its own blankets, duvets and heaters.

The maximum number of people permitted per booking is 7 total - this is to be no more than 5 adults due to the bunks only being suitable for children.

IF you have a request for more than 7 people, then this needs to be discussed prior to confirming your booking.

This cottage is also home to a fully equipped kitchen, with microwave, oven, fridge/freezer and dishwasher.

Set on a mostly flat piece of section with driveway to the house makes this property relatively easily accessible for most.

Extras:
Cleaning - 75 per stay

Linen - $20 per person or BYO - because we are a holiday home, you are able to bring your own linen (towels/top and bottom sheet/tea towels). Alternatively you may hire this at $20 / person for the duration of your stay. Please advise us if you require this when you make your booking.

You will have access to the whole cottage - kitchen, living, lounge, three bedrooms and bathroom, plus the vast outdoor space to enjoy!
