- "We loved staying at Tree Cottage. It's a charming 'old-school' bach, just perfect for a cosy weekend away. Lindsey was a great host, with really good communication before and during our stay." - "This was a cozy place to stay. About 20 minutes outside Dunedin in a quiet neighborhood. We had access to a wonderful beach and within easy driving distance to several places along the coast to view sea lions, albatross, and an ecosystem reserve. We stayed in late Feb - this might be a much busier place in high summer due to easy beach access."

- "We enjoyed our stay. We arrived on one of Dunedin's coldest days, but once we got the fire and heat pump going everything warmed up. There were heaps of blankets for the beds and cosy flannel sheets. The kitchen is a good size and really well equipped. The owner was good to deal with." - "Charming cottage - clean and well appointed. A little bit chilly and blinds were a bit of struggle for my fat thumbs, but given the heart of winter and with a heat pump all perfectly reasonable. Would certainly consider for future trips."

Warm, relaxing and homely are some of the descriptions used by people who stayed at Albion Cottage. Inside, it is newly renovated in 2024 and outside it is surrounded by an array of flowering plants and a variety of birds and butterflies. - "The property here is beautiful. The owner warned us that it may be chilly in the midst of winter, but it was completely fine once we had the heater going for a little bit and there are heaters everywhere you'd want them (including in the bathroom which is rare in New Zealand). Do note: If you are not able bodied, you will want to either rent a car or plan to uber as the hill you need to walk up to get to grocery, restaurants, and walk to downtown Dunedin is very steep."

Plenty of space for family who live locally to come visit, the board games and toys were a fun addition. Kitchen well stocked for cooking (plus a very generous starter kit for breakfast). Linen and bedding all great. And we were so warm, even when the weather got pretty wild outside!"

The Brighton River side cottage looks out over the lovely Otokia creek as it flows out to the beach and the surrounding lush vegetation that draws native birds and wading birds. The cosy cottage is only a 5 minute walk to both the swimming beach and coastal walks. The cottage has been decorated to maintain it's character yet add comfort and style. It is truly a peaceful place to rest and reset and yet very handy to Dunedin, Taieri Mouth and further south.

Relax in a peaceful and private cabin surrounded by gardens. Watch the sun set over Round Hill, then wake up to birdsong from the kowhai tree in front of your private balcony. All this, just an 8 minute drive from town.
The cabin has all the amenities you need, except for cooking! It has a bar fridge, kettle, toaster and microwave. Stay 3 nights or longer and we'll bake you some crusty, fresh bread.
The space
The cabin includes a very comfortable queen-sized bed, 2 seater couch, TV, ensuite bathroom and limited cooking facilities (toaster, fridge, microwave and kettle). The cabin is not attached to the main house on the property.
The hot water cylinder is small, so there's time for one 7-minute shower, or two quick ones. The water reheats in 90 minutes.
The driveway is very steep. Once you are up the driveway, there are 11 concrete steps and later 10 wooden steps to the cabin. The lovely views, however, make the climb worth it.
If you arrive by cycle or motorbike, we can find a place to park your bike in the shed.
Guest access
The cabin has its own access so guests can come and go as they choose. There is generally plenty of parking on the street.
Early check-in is often possible - just ask us if that's something you need.
We prefer it if people park on the street rather than up the driveway (once they have unloaded their gear). However, if you need to park up the driveway, just let us know.
Other things to note
We (Rachel and Brett) live in the main house on the property, with our three children. Rachel's parents, Roger and Judy, live next door and act as co-hosts.
The cabin feels very secluded and we are happy to let you enjoy your privacy. Just call us, or send us a message, if there's anything you need.
If you decide not to drive up the driveway, or get dropped off, and need a hand to get your bag up the drive please message us to see if we are available to come and help.
Please note that Streetview shows the neighbour's house. You need to go up the long driveway to access our place.

Perfect little get away pad in Brighton. With a renovated bathroom and kitchen, this one bedroom with two king single beds. It is great for a couple or two friends .
A view of the ocean from the livingroom and deck and a 2 minute walk to the beach.
It is an old weatherboard charmer, with quirks reflecting its age.
It is insulated and a cosy heatpump will keep the chill at bay on a stormy day.
Please note that the fire place is not available to use.
The space
This is a "old-school" beach cottage with quirks and character that come with age. It has been a labour of love to renovate the bach from what it was. It has been partially double glazed, has a recently renovated kitchen & bathroom. It is fully insulated. The heat pump is perfect to heat in winter & cool in summer.
If you are after new and modern, this cottage is not for you. It is well loved, clean and charming.
There is a new deck and driveway
Please note that the fire place is not in use.
Guest access
The entire house is included in the rental.
Other things to note
We have a new driveway that still needs a wee bit of work. The newly extended deck is still a bit of a work in progress. It is safe but not completed. It does not affect the inside of the house.
Also if you are staying over on a Thursday we would appreciate it if you can please pop the red bin out on the edge of the road.
Beds may have different coloured duvets or cushions may be on other chairs than pictured.

There are hand written notes left on some of the more sensitive features in this house, please read and comply with these!

Built in the 1860s and later reclad, insulated and double glazed, Settlers Cottage is a great example of an early "prefab" design. It was shipped over in pieces on a barge from Port Chalmers originally. Cosy and warm it has all you need including a new heat pump and new electric blankets on double and King beds, plus hotties for the single beds. There is a kitchen with all you need, however no full stove (but a toaster oven, microwave and two element cooktop are provided). Guests love the history and sense of stepping back in time Settlers Cottage provides.

Located above Purakaunui estuary, perfect for couples or solo travellers. Enjoy the view, dine outside on the deck, walk, bike, swim, surf or do absolutely nothing. With a well fitted-out kitchen, a composting toilet (don't worry, its nice) and a wood-fired hot tub in the garden, this wee house is private, sunny and super-popular with native birds. Down at the waters edge you'll find the Birds' Nest boatshed. Get back to basics and rediscover what having a break from it all really means.
The space
Only 14 ks from Port Chalmers but a world away from modern life, Purakanui is a tiny seaside settlement with an awesome surf break and a safe to swim estuary. Organic vegetables, free range eggs and fresh baked bread are available from a stall at the top of the road most weekends and Holy Cow organic dairy is just a 15-minute drive away for fresh butter, heavenly cream, honey, cheese, ghee and milk in returnable bottles. Relax with a library of books and magazines to read, sleep, eat, visit Orokanui eco-sanctuary, Port Chalmers' cafes and boutiques, go rock climbing at Long Beach, kite surfing at Doctors Point. Walk to the old pa site, climb Mt. Mopanui, collect cockles at low tide. Happy as.
Guest access
You'll have the whole bach, you lucky creatures.
Other things to note
Water supply is rainwater so conserving water is key out here. Limit showers to a couple of minutes and only use hot tub if tanks are full. The composting toilet is separate to the house so you might need to dash out in the rain.
The path up to the house is steep, and difficult for the unfit. There is no parking on the property. You need to park at the road and carry your stuff up to the house.
Do not cross the paddock behind the house, this annoys the farmer.
Some of the light switches are pull switches, so bear this in mind if you arrive in the dark. The toilet is the latest in composting toilets and not smelly. Please don't wear shoes inside the house and leave the bach as tidy as you found it.
