Would have loved to stay longer." - "We had an absolutely brilliant stay in the Chapel. It is much bigger than it looks with gorgeous high ceilings so it feels very spacious. With a two year old and a large dog, it never felt cramped or like we were on top of each other. And the bathroom is HUGE! We felt incredibly welcomed and will be back without a doubt. This is a fabulous, historic yet homely large country house, we accommodate groups from 5-6 up to 14-16 for your exclusive use. We have private secure parking for 4-5 vehicles additional parking is also available. We are uniquely located in the heart of the stunning Dartmoor National Park, close to Tavistock and Two Bridges, Burrator Reservoir and Yelverton. Arthur Conan. Doyle wrote the world famous ‘Hound of The Baskervilles’ book only meters from the house. The house is over 170 years old, built of magnificent local granite it stands as majestically as the day it was built. It was the Chaplains House originally. There is one of the most picturesque and pretty church yards next to the property, and we have a large garden surrounded by 60ft+ beech trees and laurel heading. We have some wild honey bees too and also a wild nature pond - depending the time of the year you can find frogs and newts... it’s a lovely garden with great walks into the wilds of Dartmoor on our doorstep For children and adventurous adults we have a huge trampoline and swings. The pond is shallow but we recommend adult supervision of course. We have a family made adventure playground area and tree platform and climbing nets. It’s family made and not commercial playground equipment; as with all wooden climbing frames etc there’s a small risk of splinters and catching the odd bolt it but bit to be honest my kids love it and have a great time, we recommend that if you choose to use this it is only for children’s use sub 13 years old and only with supervision if you are happy for them to use it; as I said we love it and it’s another aspect of outdoor fun. There is a sunken patio and large decked area with a high end Hot Springs hydrotherapy hot tub for the use of 6 people. Please check your health allied yiu to use it. It’s wonderful.
The house itself has seven bedrooms all decorated extremely tastefully four shower / bathrooms and two additional separate toliets.
The living area of the house consists of two very high end kitchens - the main kitchen is located on the slightly raised ground floor level and is fitted with high end high gloss units, and island, wine chiller, fridge and freezer and double Smeg Ovens, and Italian gas burner hob. The other kitchen on the slightly lower garden level is as well equipped.
We can easily cater for upto approximately 16 exclusive self catered guests, we have all the kitchen appliances you’ll need, a coffee machine, microwave, dishwashers, toasters kettles, Nutribullet, Tasimo and we even have the option to LED party lights in the kitchen. Champagne glasses, wine glasses, whisky and beer glasses etc.
The dining areas and lounges are fabulous places to entertain. The main upper ground floor level is floored in ancient solid oak parquet herringbone flooring, both areas are open plan and have two stunning glass fronted cream coloured multi fuel log burners (we have central heating also) these sit in huge ‘over sized’ locally cut and sculpted Bathstone fireplaces (cream limestone). There is a scandanvian styled lounge on the lower ground floor level and an additional dining space which is great if you choose to eat alfresco or give members of your party differing eating options. Both the lower level additional lounge and kitchen leads into the garden through glass double patio doors. There are also two bedrooms on this level which again offers a great split for your party if you teens or babies, older people or younge families who would like a little more separation.. be it is connected typically via a standard stair case but also had its own garden enterance (it is very much part of the main house but offers some simple seperstiin if required). Other wise just think of it as great additional living spaces to enjoy.
The bedrooms are all designed differently and tastefully. We have two 4ft 6” standard double beds, four 5ft king size beds and one queen size 6ft bed (seven bedrooms and beds in total). You may not choose or need to use them all but choices are great... We also have two portable beds and a portable cot and high chair. The house has original period panels and mouldings from 1850 throughout the main living areas giving a sumptuous and regal feel, all painted in gorgeous soft ‘Farrow and Ball’ National Trust colours. The house is large but extremely cosy and always welcoming. It’s fabulous for large family and friend groups and it’s location is amazing also..
We have two fabulous old and welcoming country pubs in the village. A traditional post office and small convienience shop and expert outdoor clothing shop and great walks.
Due to our location guests can easily access cross moor hiking and cycling routes (100 meters from the house), wild swimming spots, and an incredible variety of spectacular scenery, stunning historic villages, buildings and magnificent beauty spots to visit. We specialise in sending extensive information of many varying locations, walks, beautiful days out, activities and sumptuous country and costal retreats to explore and also eat at too. It’s very accessible for guests to explore many areas, valleys villages and activities as well as the north and south Devon beaches, and Cornwall (only 11 miles away), magnificent beaches 30-45 mins and beyond. Ancient magical forests (5 minutes) , stunning wild moorland and magical river valleys. As aforementioned we love the area and love passing on our knowledge to our guests and specialise in helping guests find the perfect activities whether it's ‘secret beauty spots’ which will leave you jaw dropped and are rarely found by most visitors to the area (we’ll ensure you get great ideas and don’t miss anything!) , or you may prefer fantastic places to eat local food, cooked to order... maybe even zip wires to ‘free fall’ air bag drops, group kayaking to surfing or paddle boarding’ ( with highly regarded instructors ) on some of the countries most spectacular beaches. Or maybe you prefer shopping in gorgeous towns and ancient markets. So whether it’s climbing to horse riding, stately homes and country houses to castles and quirky costal or country cafes; or simply stunningly beautiful walks and silence under huge skies. Just ask, give us a little time and I'm certain we can offer you some amazing itinerary ideas and great locations and activities. If you're looking for the simpler break then let us tell you about the beautiful hidden gems close by. (We do have a 15% increase over Christmas and new year to cover decorating and addition costs. Thank you for enquiring. We do also charge £10 per night for well behaved doggy guests - to a maximum of two per booking).
We do ask for the names of all resident guests and the lead bookers residential address if you are renting the whole of Dartmoor Grange - this is simply a matter of checkin request.
Many thanks and we wish you a fantastic stay and the making of great memories.
NB (On the odd occasion use of the hot tub maybe delayed slightly on your arrival day due to a warm refill and reheat, or an extended clean-we aim to have it functional on these rare occasions by the evening) it’s extremely rare that a slight delay occurs. The hot tub is for your groups soul use, it is not shared. We do charge a Christmas supplement and a supplement for new year also.
- "very enjoyable. Holls was a great host...always available and responsive to every request/query." - "We came to stay at Chaplains House at the start of the summer holidays and had the most incredible time. From the outset Holly was the most amazing host. Always ready to give us tips and ideas about where to go, nothing was too much trouble. The house itself was perfect for our large family group with a large garden and plenty of equipment for the children to play on. We loved the location which offered easy access to moor walks and provided a central spot from which to explore the delights of Dartmoor and Cornwall. There were numerous sandy beaches, riverside walks, grand houses and a whole host of other places to explore. It was an idyllic trip."
