Under the Blues is a fully remodeled single level 2 bedroom/2 bath home completed in 2023. Nestled between Canyonlands and Bears Ears National Monument, It's cooler here because we are at 7,100 ft and are at the foothills of the 11,360 ft. Abajo Mountains. The Living Room features a remote controlled gas fireplace, 55" Smart TV, and Leather sofas. The Master bedroom features a pillow top mattress, adjustable bed, 48" Smart TV, duel vanities, a heated bidet and a walk in closet. BBQ out back.
The space
Our home has been remodeled to have an open and comfortable atmosphere. It includes fiber WIFI that is typically over 800MB for TV and personal use. The main living area has an open Kitchen / Living room layout with an expandable dining table for when you need it. The kitchen has a large island that seats 4 with a full assortment of appliances and accessories. The living area features leather sofas and a 55" TV with Chromecast that is above the fireplace. The laundry room is next to the main living room and has a washer and dryer.

The master bedroom has a big screen TV and pillow top mattress. The master bathroom features a walk in closet, free standing tub and a large walk-in shower. The toilet includes a heated bidet.

The back patio is shared and accessed around the garage. It has outdoor furniture, stringed hanging patio lights and a BBQ.

There is off and on street parking. If you need food, the local grocery store is one block away. If you golf, there is a beautiful 18 hole golf course 1 mile away.
Guest access
Under the Blues includes the upstairs portion of the home and shared access to the backyard and patio. On-site parking is shared with the basement. It does not include the garage or basement.
Other things to note
We have designed and furnished this home like it was our own to live in. We expect and appreciate renters taking great care of all the nice details we have included like the expansive kitchen, free-standing tub, fireplace, etc.

We do not allow pets due to allergies of the owners and other guests.

Also, we ask that users be aware that the fireplace surface is extremely hot and will burn with any touch to it. DO NOT USE around any young children because being in a new environment, the children do not understand the danger.

We do not allow smoking of any kind inside or outside when on the property. We have a basement apartment and we enforce this at all times.

Set in a beautiful location at 7,200' elevation and close to the center of the Colorado Plateau – Hideout Ft. Abajo is an ideal base from which to explore the more than a dozen State and National Parks, Forests, Monuments, and Recreation Areas in beautiful south-eastern Utah and near-by Colorado. On the southern edge of Monticello, it has a very private feel but is minutes from the conveniences of town and the # 1 Tee of the Hideout golf course.
Hideout Ft. Abajo features a partial wrap-around covered deck with a hammock and BBQ Grill that looks out through junipers across the Hideout golf course to the Abajo Mountains. Laze in the porch hammock and watch the sun on the mountain slopes! This is not a bland hotel room but a home where you can see generations of families growing up. Come vacation with us in our rustic bunkhouse located on Montezuma Canyon Ranch & Vineyards. We have some of the most spectacular night skies, beautiful mornings, and amazing scenery. While at the ranch you can watch a movie in a cave, hike, bike or explore ruins without leaving the canyon.

The bunkhouse is approximately 750 sq. ft. and was recently renovated. It has a covered wrap around deck great for relaxing. The kitchen, dining and living room are combined in one open room. Bedroom one has a double bed and two twin beds. Bedroom two has two twin beds and one set of twin bunkbeds. The bathroom is roomy with a large shower and large vanity. And if you want some fresh air while you shower, take it outside to the private outdoor shower. The bunkhouse is great for large families or groups.

Things to know before booking with us.
When you book with us you are not staying with a big corporation that owns many vacation rentals. You are staying at a family-owned ranch, we are your contacts, cleaners, and maintenance crew. We have three rentals, enough to stay busy but not so many that we lose our focus on good customer service. We care deeply about our ranch, our rentals and want your stay to be as amazing as possible.
Please book with the correct number of guests. Reason number one, we do not charge an additional cleaning fee because 1 guest should not pay as much as 8. But we do add a small additional fee for each guest to cover the additional cleaning for more guests. Reason number two, safety, in case of an emergency it is nice to know how many people are staying on our property.
There is no cell service at the ranch. We do have limited Wi-Fi and a ranch phone for emergencies. We have satellite internet. On a good day, the top download speed is 25mbps, but usually it is a lot slower than that. Our internet cannot support working remotely.
We are located 16 miles southeast of Monticello Utah. It is a 30–40-minute drive to the nearest gas station and grocery store. 10.5 miles of that drive is dirt road. The scenery and peacefulness more than make up for the long trek to town. This may be a deal breaker for some, but I believe that these are two things that make this cabin and location truly special. There is nothing to interrupt the time spent with your company and enjoying the beauty of the canyon.
Dirt Road Conditions – The road is maintained by San Juan County Road Department. During the summer months the road is easy to travel. Winter Guests, December through February AWD or 4WD is required because of snow. November and March weather varies so always check in about road conditions. We do recommend having a good spare tire in your vehicle and if you plan on touring the canyon, high ground clearance is strongly recommended.
Weather – Blanding Utah mirrors our weather and temperatures better than Monticello Utah.
Well Pump – Our ranch water is supplied from an agricultural well that is pumped with a diesel engine. When we have guests, we try to minimize the time we run the well pump to cut down on noise disturbance. We do not start the pump before 7a.m. and turn it off no later than 7p.m. We apologize in advance for the inconvenience.
Solar Power – The ranch and bunkhouse are completely off-grid and depend on mother nature to provide our power. This makes power preservation especially important. Only use necessary lights and appliances. The bunkhouse rarely loses power, the system is just too small for some appliances. We do have a backup generator for emergencies.
The primary heat source is a wood burning stove and we provide free firewood to heat the bunkhouse. The bathroom has a propane wall unit heater to supplement on those extra chilly nights and mornings.
The bunkhouse does not have an oven, but does have a microwave, gas cook top, toaster, and propane grill.
The coffee maker is a 12-cup drip coffee maker or stove top percolator, and we provide coffee and sugar.
The bunkhouse does not have laundry facilities.
Summer Guests - The bunkhouse does not have air conditioning, but we have fresh canyon air and nice cross breezes. Specifically, July and August guests, we are in the desert, and it can get quite warm. If you like it hot, then we have your place.
Outdoor Fire Pit - Please bring your own firewood to use the fire pit. We have firewood bundles available for purchase at the Montezuma Market for your convenience.
Smoking is not allowed inside of the bunkhouse. If you choose to smoke outside, please pick up after yourself and be conscious of fire danger and keep the yard and outdoor areas clean and litter free.
Montezuma Market – Located at the ranch, we have fresh organic produce, eggs, preserves, pickles, and juice for sale. We also support local artisans and crafty friends by selling their wares. We accept Cash, Checks, Credit and Debit.
The Grapevine Cave & Lounge is a manmade cave and is shared with 2 other property rentals at Montezuma Canyon Ranch & Vineyards. It is a great place to watch movies, hang out and play games.
We do not have wine available yet. We are steadily working towards that goal.

You will likely be greeted by three friendly dogs, the collie is Roxy The healer is Cortez, and the brindle is River. Cortez and Roxy are still a puppies and tend to jump up on you though they are learning. Feel free to be firm if they jump.

2 miles down a dirt road, not recommended for low clearance or sports cars.

The space

Be prepared for all weather possibilities. It is recommended to bring an all wheel drive or 4x4 vehicle, or at least front wheel-drive prepared with snow chains. If you get stuck we cannot help. Please know where your tow hook is located to be properly prepared.

Charming one bedroom and one bath cabin with a small loft. Our cabin overlooks the vineyard and large orchards with beautiful canyon walls as the backdrop. We often try to describe our place to outsiders, but words can't put it into perspective. You have to see it and experience it for yourself. There is plenty to see and do so you can spend your whole vacation at the cabin or get out and see all that Southeastern Utah has to offer.
The cabin is approximately 900 sq. ft. The kitchen, dining and living rooms are combined in one open room with cathedral ceilings. The bathroom is separate and has access from the living room or queen bedroom. The queen bed is in a separate room and the double bed is in a loft above the dining room. You can enjoy the morning sun, orchard views and a cup of coffee from the front porch. During the day you can challenge travel mates to a game of Corn Hole or Giant Connect 4. Then end the day on the back deck grilling dinner and eating outside in the fresh air.

When you book with us you are not staying with a big corporation that owns many vacation rentals. You are staying at a family-owned ranch, we are your contacts, cleaners, and maintenance crew. We have three rentals, enough to stay busy but not so many that we lose our focus on good customer service. We care deeply about our ranch, our rentals and want your stay to be as amazing as possible.
There is no cell service at the ranch. We do have limited Wi-Fi and a ranch phone for emergencies. We have satellite internet. On a good day, the top download speed is 25mbps, but usually it is a lot slower than that. Our internet cannot support working remotely.
We are located 16 miles southeast of Monticello Utah. It is a 30–40-minute drive to the nearest gas station and grocery store. 10.5 miles of that drive is dirt road. The scenery and peacefulness more than make up for the long trek to town. This may be a deal breaker for some, but I believe that these are two things that make this cabin and location truly special. There is nothing to interrupt the time spent with your company and enjoying the beauty of the canyon.
Dirt Road Conditions – The road is maintained by San Juan County Road Department. During the summer months the road is easy to travel. Winter Guests, December through February AWD or 4WD is required because of snow. November and March weather varies so always check in about road conditions. We do recommend having a good spare tire in your vehicle and if you plan on touring the canyon, high ground clearance is strongly recommended.
Weather – Blanding Utah mirrors our weather and temperatures better than Monticello Utah.
Solar Power – The ranch and cabin are completely off-grid and depend on mother nature to provide our power. This makes power preservation especially important. Only use necessary lights and appliances. The cabin rarely loses power, the system is just too small for some appliances. We do have a backup generator for emergencies.
The primary heat source is a wood burning stove and we provide free firewood to heat the cabin. The bedroom and bathroom have a propane wall unit heater to supplement on those extra chilly nights and mornings.
The cabin does not have a microwave but has a full-size gas range with oven, propane grill and toaster.
The coffee maker is a 12-cup drip coffee maker, and we provide coffee and sugar.
The cabin does not have laundry facilities.
Summer Guests –The cabin does not have air conditioning, but we have fresh canyon air and nice cross breezes. Specifically, July and August guests, we are in the desert, and it can get quite warm. So, if you like it hot, we have your place.
Outdoor Fire Pit - Please bring your own firewood to use the fire pit. We have firewood bundles available for purchase at the Montezuma Market for your convenience.
Smoking is not allowed inside of the cabin. If you choose to smoke outside, please pick up after yourself and be conscious of fire danger and keep the yard and outdoor areas clean and litter free.
We do not allow pets.
Montezuma Market – Located at the ranch, we have fresh organic produce, eggs, preserves, pickles, and juice for sale. We also support local artisans and crafty friends by selling their wares. We accept Cash, Checks, Credit and Debit.
The Grapevine Cave & Lounge is a manmade cave and is shared with 2 other property rentals at Montezuma Canyon Ranch & Vineyards. It is a great place to watch movies, hang out and play games.
We do not have wine available yet. We are steadily working towards that goal.

There are dogs on the ranch, and you may meet them during your stay. The dogs are friendly and not aggressive.

We found a tote of games to play behind the bed, and enjoyed using the table to play.I had a few challenges sleeping, as there was someone riding an ATV in the neighborhood, then a strong windstorm (quite unsettling in a covered wagon as the flaps were flapping and the wagon was rocking), followed by the town deer all walking around the wagon. My children slept through it all! Also, all were things that the host warns about as possibilities, so I actually found it amusing that we experienced them all! We were very happy with our stay!"

Come stay in this adorable studio cabin located only 8.5 miles east of Monticello, Utah. Experience the calm of the rural environment. The cabin has a queen size bed and a full sized futon. A small kitchenette includes a compact fridge, microwave, and basic dishes. It also has an electric kettle for boiling water. Private bathroom with custom tile work in the shower. The wall heater keeps you warm in the winter and a portable air conditioning keeps you cool during the summer heat.

- "This is a great little find. Booked through Expedia/Vrbo. This Log Cabin was perfect for a stay with the family and our dog. We were visiting the near by National Parks and used this cabin as our homebase. (There are five National Parks with in an hour and a half drive: Arches, Mesa Verde, Canyonlands, Natural Bridges, Hovenweep). The cabin was well lighted with celling fans, beds were comfortable and the shower had nice hot water. There were cards, games and coloring books when we were there. Located off a quite country road with great dark skies and a rustic atmosphere. We walked our dog on the country lane and stargazed at night. The cabin was easy to find with a well maintained road which did well when it rained very hard. There was also a firepit and picknick table outside. We like staying in unique locations and this cabin will be another great memory for our family. "
