Fall is approaching the High Country and what better way to spend a crisp day than snuggled in our mountain guesthouse.
After traveling for 4 years, we settled in the charming town of West Jefferson, North Carolina, in an established neighborhood, a 5 minute walk to downtown shops, cafes and art galleries. We were thrilled our home included an artist's studio atop the garage, just behind our home, but decided we would prefer to use the studio for friends and family; a guesthouse close enough for socializing but far enough for everyone to have their own space. In between family and friends we are opening our guesthouse, Vogelsang (German for birdsong), to you, and whether you are a couple or solo traveler, we are committed to making you as comfortable as family.

There is ample off street parking, 15 stair steps to the studio and a small deck for enjoying views of Little and Big Phoenix Mountains. Inside is a queen bed with soft sheets, plenty of pillows (you can never have too many pillows), comforter and extra blankets for those cool nights in the mountains. The bath has a shower, toilet, small sink, towels and ample hooks. A dorm frig, microwave, coffee maker and coffee, is in the nook.

If you or your companion are super tall, you may find the 6'9" ceilings confining. The entry door is 5'8" and everyone instinctively ducks, even if they are only 5'2". But once inside, you will find everything you need for a cozy, comfortable stay. Wi-fi, TV, air conditioning, heat, peace and quiet!

When you are ready to explore downtown, a quick walk, or drive, through the Town park, past basketball, pickle ball and tennis courts, playground, the Ashe County Library, to all the activity and excitement of shops, cafes and galleries. Grab a coffee and sweet at Hatchet Coffee, lunch at an English Tea Room, a movie, or beer in the evening at one of two craft breweries. The trolley to the Old Barn Winery departs and returns downtown on the weekends on a regular schedule. Hop on and leave the driving to them. You can even choose your Christmas Tree while there.

The backyard is fenced on 3 sides with vegetation on 2 sides, so it feels quite private on the deck. Low and high wrought iron deck furniture including tables, and a small propane bbq, make it a great space to relax, enjoy the butterflies, cows and chickens nearby with drinks and dinner. Cushions are available for outdoor furniture.

The kitchen offers cabinet space for your food and other items, microwave, range, dishwasher, and a new refrigerator. In additional to a baking cabinet full of bowls, measuring cups and more, there is a pots and pans cabinet with a lettuce spinner, plus another with baking sheets, casserole pans and more, The corner cabinet offers a toaster oven, hand mixer, and a toaster. Wine, beer and highball glasses, coffee cups, dishes and bowls and a full pull out drawer with lots of silverware, knives and serving utensils. The cabinet above the coffee maker offers a large assortment of teas, coffee, plus a blender. The spice cabinet includes the basics and more. 2 additional large drawers offer other kitchen needs including spare batteries and a first aid kit.

We have always thoroughly cleaned and disinfected all surfaces including furniture, counter tops, molding, all bathroom and kitchen surfaces, floors, remote controls, door knobs, light switches, and more, both immediately following a stay and prior to a new guest to freshen things up if it had been awhile between guests. Of course bedding, towels, dishes and kitchen items are thoroughly washed. Many of our reviews talk about the cleanliness of our property and the views!. My husband and I personally clean and inspect each other's work to make sure this home shines. No cross-contamination: Cleaning items never travel from room to room. All are thoroughly washed after each use. We are not only following, but going beyond recommendations. We provide a door code so there is no personal interaction at check-in or out.

- "We found the cottage to be super clean and tastefully decorated. It also smelled good. The host, Kathy was amazing. We only slept in the master bedroom and the bed was very comfortable. The view out back was beautiful. We saw lots of cows, one wild Turkey, hummingbirds and butterflies. We are city people so this country setting made for a relaxing week. The cottage is in a neighborhood so you do have houses all around but the backyard/deck is secluded so you do have plenty of privacy."
