- "Ideal spot for a romantic getaway. Secluded, private, tranquil, and great place for nature lovers. Well-appointed cabin with all the necessities, and then some. Lots of thought went into the unique design and decor of this cabin. One of a kind! Also enjoyed the separate hot tub gazebo overlooking the deep ravine. Awesome, especially at night. Hope to return one day soon." - "This place, per my title, is magical. This was our second time staying here and it did not disappoint. The seclusion of the property is so peaceful and relaxing, it’s the perfect spot to get away from it all."

There's nothing like relaxing on the porch swing at this quaint 2-bedroom cottage in Sugar Grove, Virginia, (near Wytheville) listening to the stream rush over the rocks. Watch our resident ducks, and then take a dip in the private swimming hole. Kids (and kids at heart) love the caboose in the yard, complete with it's own half bath. There's a big lawn for playing, great hikes nearby, plenty of fly fishing in the area, and the cottage is in walking distance to the beautiful Grayson Highlands Horse trail. Good WiFi, Direct TV (or bring your own Fire Stick), and cell phones will work if you connect them through the WiFi. The kitchen has everything you need, and a washer and dryer are available. Great spot for hunters, or for anyone that just wants to get away for a while. Borders Jefferson National forest.
- "My wife and I enjoyed the house. The description online was very accurate. The caboose outside was really cool (I have no idea how they got that thing in there). Sitting on the porch in the morning and sipping my coffee while listening to the stream was amazing (we had abysmal weather as it rained heavily each day we were there so the stream was moving fast). The house had everything you would need. I am not sure they provide soap and shampoo but there was a few samples that looked like they were from a hotel (I assumed it was from a past guest, but I could be wrong). The kitchen had everything you need and the grill fired up on the 1st try. The place is definitely remote (roughly 20-25 minutes off of I-80) so I would suggest buying grocery’s before you arrive. We did enjoy our stay."

We loved looking at the river and being close to local attractions. Thanks for helping make our Thanksgiving so special." - "Our family has stayed at Jack & Mary's Place several times and each time is as good as the last. The house is gorgeous and set up perfectly for larger groups. The property is beautiful with the country feel but just outside of town if you need anything. It's always clean and communication is good if you have any questions. Always looking forward to another trip here!"

Natural splendor awaits you at The River House! Perched on South Fork Holston River, a trout fly fishing mecca, it resonates tranquility. The home is appointed by the finest in interior furniture and bedding. Hike, bike, fly fish, tour nearby Mt Rogers, Grayson Highlands, Jefferson National Forest, VA Creeper Trail, or dine in historic Abingdon. Enjoy NASCAR races, holiday lights, and much more at Bristol Motor Speedway. Enjoy the Jacuzzi hot tub, ping pong, billiards, croquet, or lolling by the river. Welcome! Come enjoy!
The River House is a gorgeous, quiet getaway perched sublimely on the banks of the South Fork of the mighty Holston River in the Adwolfe area of pastoral Smyth County, Virginia. Nestled peacefully on five hundred feet of this state-hatchery supported trout stream, you’ll find your cares slipping into oblivion regardless of which riverside Adirondack chair or seat in the hot tub you pick. Here time disappears as your rhythm changes with days dissolving into dusk, sunsets become sunrises and back again. The sound of the river will resonate in your soul. Perfectly placed on a private triangle of land, it commands hundreds of feet on the river. And if you need anything you’re equidistant to Marion or Chilhowie, and even closer to Jefferson National Forest, Mount Rogers, and Grayson Highlands State Park. The river house is less than an hour from Bristol Motor Speedway!
Once you’re acclimated to the serene sounds and sights of this constantly coursing stream, you’ll grow to love the subtle and supple quality of The River House. Pulling into the driveway you’ll come first to the covered porch with several seating spaces for those times when the rain washes the valley. Off to the right, along the riverbank is a raised deck, jutting out over the stream. Further down the bank, are a row of inviting Adirondack chairs. As I am in this narrative, you’ll find yourself irresistibly drawn to the outside because of its unique, natural power and beauty. But come inside for a minute. Let’s cross the threshold. Here’s a modest but updated kitchen, replete with a coffee bar beside the front door to accommodate company in the kitchen. From the kitchen window you’ll see a wonderful view of the river wending its way north. Looking left, you’ll see a generous, sunny family room with a café table and six chairs, an exquisite, tufted, Cordovan leather sofa, matching chair, and daybed with trundle for an extra two sleeping berths. Sink your bare feet into the burgundy wool and silk Persian carpet. Walk through this sunny space and you’ll enter the hallway to the sleeping quarters. On the right is the master bedroom appointed with a stout, king-sized furniture suite, another exquisite Persian carpet and carved floral love seat. Across the hall is the guest bedroom with another compelling queen set. Our choice of bedding is the Frontgate Resort line. Linens are from Macy’s Hotel Collection. Bedding is dried “en plein air,” so you’ll slumber in fragrant mountain sunshine. We don’t want to anesthetize you, but you’ll love your slumber as much as your waking hours!
Let’s step down to the lower level and see what’s going on there. Taking the staircase from the kitchen, we alight on the lower level. We think you’ll be delighted with the 8’ Brunswick billiards table appointed nicely with a green and buff Tiffany-style billiards light overhead. Adjacent is an intimate two-chair café table, and wide-screen opposite. Especially in inclement weather this is another nice and separate gathering space. We make it easy for folks to converge and diverge.
Back through the kitchen we come to the large gathering room with full bath. Quietly dominating this space is a scarlet Bokhara Persian carpet – truly art underfoot. The generous leather furnishings, glow of the fireplace and overall ambiance may invite you to linger longer than you intended. In cold weather you’ll love the fireplace radiating warmth and light. With the spa towels and robes in the nearby armoire, it’s tempting to take a turn in the hot tub.
Open the patio doors and step out onto the open deck. Out here you’re going to find your senses beset by a panoply of natural amenities competing for your attention. You’ll see and hear the unique sounds of the river, the trees waving across green meadows in the wafting wind. Depending upon how your day has gone, you may just decide to plop down here on the patio to relax and decide what to do next. That may constitute nothing more than enjoying the experience of the The River House. This open deck is a natural gathering place for sitting, talking, eating and engaging with friends and family surrounded by nature’s bounty and beauty.
Or, grab your towels and robes and head for the spa. Follow the sidewalk to the Jacuzzi six-person spa with lighting, aqua massage jets for a moment of pure relaxation on the banks of the Holston River letting the water work its wonder. Others may prefer relaxing on the river-bank in one of the Adirondack chairs. Recline in these comfy seats and contemplate nothing more than the moving waters. Or light a campfire in the copper pit or carry a basket of goodies down to the picnic table. For group lawn games, you can choose between ping-pong, croquet or bocce ball. You can also access the adjacent storage building with ping pong table and comfortable sofas.
Here you’ll find three easy-mount bicycles for pure holiday fun. Did we mention trout fishing! And you can also content yourselves streaming video inside or roaming around outside with our wi-fi music speaker. Just come have fun!
As you can see, The River House is an experience waiting to unfold beautifully and uniquely for all of our guests. Experience natural adventure or quiet serenity. Embrace togetherness or seek your own solitude. However, you choose to personalize your own River House revels, we hope you leave with memories for a lifetime and long to return to do it all over again! When you return to reacquaint yourselves with its magic, we’ll have everything ready and waiting for you.
- "The river and amenities were amazing. Firewood and supplies for s'mores, pingpong in the barn, pool table in the basement. An absolutely beautiful property. Lots of different areas to sit outside, both covered and uncovered. Very comfortable outdoor furniture. The host was amazing - helped us with some questions we had about the area. A great place to stay!" - "We spent each morning sipping coffee in the Adirondack chairs by the river. One day we set up our easels along the river and painted. The fire pit was another favorite of ours! We had a wonderful time!"

- "I am so thrilled to have found this property …. The views, the quiet, AND our Golden retriever was happy! I grew up close by & my parents live around the corner so it made it easy to visit with them. There is easy access to all my favorite places downtown and the lake, aka Hungry mother Park. I cannot wait to come back and commune with my favorite VA backroads ." - "Melissa's property was a fantastic escape from my typical city living. You will find yourself surrounded by rolling hills, beautiful stars, and a peaceful quietness. The house itself is fantastic with every amenity thought of by the host. We enjoyed the small touches that were geared toward guests - we truly had everything we needed! The hosts were super communicative and easy to get in touch with if we ever needed anything. The internet was frankly amazing considering the remote location. Overall it was a fantastic stay! And even though it seems remote, you are still only minutes from Marion, Chilhowie, Abingdon, and Hungry Mother State park, so it is truly a great location all around."

Super Private with sounds of the River. Come relax, rejuvenate, and reconnect with your loved one at this unique mountain cabin. The sounds of the river, wind through the trees, and fresh mountain air is sure to relax you. Whether you are inside the cabin or out you will feel in touch with nature through an expansive outdoor view through the windows. Come discover what makes this cabin so unique. This is a modern rustic mountain cabin with many unique qualities sure to please, including: a huge walk-in shower big enough for two, comfortable handcrafted king size bed, copper sinks, handcrafted pieces of furniture, stainless steel appliances, expansive porch, all rock exterior. All this is dwarfed compared to the location. Situated on 65 acres, overlooking thousands of acres of untouched mountain views, not one other house or streetlight can be seen, gaze at the star filled night sky, listen to the river rush in the distance, the deer feed in the yard; your worldly worries are sure to melt away.
Take a walk down the 2.5 mile fly fishing trail that parallels the river adjoining the property, a blue ribbon trout fishing stream, hike the Appalachian Trail that’s within walking distance of the cabin, take a short drive and hike to several nearby waterfalls, explore Grayson Highlands State Park and Mount Rogers, the highest peak in Virginia about 30 minutes away, go paddle boating on Hungry Mother Lake only 25 minutes away, kayak or canoe the New River 30 minutes away, bike the Virginia Creeper Trail 25 minutes away, shop and eat in downtown Marion with several unique restaurants, antique shops, and distillery only 15 minutes away, catch a show at the Lincoln Theatre downtown or visit the soon to open Wayne Henderson School of art and music, shop the Saturday morning farmers market downtown, attend one of the several festivals throughout the year in the area. The cabin is centrally located to many outdoor activities and local attractions.
- "As part of our 10-year wedding anniversary, my wife and I spent a weekend at this beautiful property. Tucked away in the hills of Marion, it felt like our private oasis. We came from a crowded suburb in NC and quiet of the night and stillness if the starts were mesmerizing. Close enough though to Marion, Abingdon and Damascus we made daily trips to the parks to log miles on the trails. The accommodations were perfect! A comfortable bed, soft sheets and towels and a huge hot tub to boot! Can't recommend this place enough! Thanks again, R! "

- "We thoroughly enjoyed are stay in this lovely home. We were visiting relatives in the area and it was a comfort to be able to come "home" and kickback to relax. Hosts were friendly, but not intrusive. We had milk and 1/2 and 1/2 for our use in the fridge when we arrived, an impressive touch, AND when I left my battery/charger they followed up and mailed it to me, such a thoughtful gesture, with no charge. Hungry Mother State Park is beautiful in the fall and great to walk the trails and enjoy being outside."

Natural splendor awaits you at The River House! Perched on South Fork Holston River, a trout fly fishing mecca, it resonates tranquility. The home is appointed by the finest in interior furniture and bedding. Hike, bike, fly fish, tour nearby Mt Rogers, Grayson Highlands, Creeper Trail; or, dine in historic Abingdon and enjoy NASCAR races and holiday lights at Bristol Motor Speedway. Enjoy the Jacuzzi hot tub, ping pong, billiards, croquet, or lolling by the river. Welcome! Come enjoy!
The space
The River House is less than an hour from Bristol Motor Speedway, NASCAR's finest!
Hungry Mother State Park, Virginia Highlands Festival, Mount Rogers Naturalist Rally, Virginia Creeper Trail, Virginia Highlands Horse Trail, Appalachian Trail - endless opportunities for adventure are just minutes away. Experience an outdoor adventure or quiet serenity. Embrace togetherness or seek your own solitude. However, you choose to personalize your own River House revels, we hope you leave with memories for a lifetime and long to return to do it all over again! When you return to reacquaint yourselves with its magic, we’ll have everything ready and waiting for you.
Consider renting the river house for a romantic weekend, or a girlfriends only getaway, or a fly fishermen's holiday, or make up your own reason to spend time at the river house. Maybe the river is calling you!
