The Garden House is a light, contemporary house which is quietly situated on the edge of Petworth and an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is only a short walk to the centre of the historic town, with its convenience stores, delis, many antique shops, independent retailers, gastro pubs, restaurants and cafes. It is also within easy walking distance of historic Petworth House and Park and the Shimmings Valley.

Inside, the house comprises a large open plan sitting room with dining area and well equipped modern kitchen with granite worktops. There is a downstairs bedroom with kingsize bed and ensuite wetroom (and direct access down stairs to the private garden).

Upstairs there are two more ensuite bedrooms, one kingsize bed and the other a double. There is a second sitting area upstairs too with a small double sofa bed. (There is an additional fee of £50 payable on arrival for making up and supply of extra linens if the sofa bed is required)

The house is furnished with contemporary furniture and fittings, with light oak flooring throughout. The beds are all extremely comfortable and the hotel quality linen has a very high thread count and is professionally laundered.

There is ample room to park up to three cars outside (additional cars ONLY by arrangement) PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN FRONT OF THE GARAGE and a large landscaped sunken garden laid to lawn with flower beds, paved areas and rambling roses. The set up:
Our barn is located on a quiet country lane. The barn is self contained and adjoins my creative studio from where I paint and manage my interior design consultancy. It is situated next to (but detached from) our family home and whilst it enjoys a large amount of privacy, we are on hand to offer advice or to answer any questions during your stay. There is an outside seating area exclusively for the use of our guests.

Getting here:
Alton is the closest town (less than 10 minutes drive), with direct trains to London Waterloo in just over an hour. Guildford is a half hour drive with direct trains to London Gatwick Airport. For drivers, the village is located off the A32, approximately an hours drive from South West London.

Things to do and places to visit:
Set on the edge of The South Downs National Park, on the "Writers Way" the barn is an ideal base for walkers, with several beautiful walks straight from the front door.

We are also in the heart of Jane Austen country with the pretty village of Chawton a leisurely half hour walk away through woodland and open fields (or short drive), where the Jane Austen House Museum and Chawton House are located.

The naturalist, Gilbert White's House and the Oates Collection is located in the pretty village of Selborne, a short drive away, where more beautiful walks can be found and an excellent cafe.

A 20 minute drive to the south is the stunning market town of Alresford and for opera fans, we are ideally located for the Grange Festival. The nationally acclaimed annual Alresford Watercress Festival which takes place in May, is an event not to be missed! Just 10 minutes further down the road is historic Winchester with its beautiful cathedral and a plethora of independent shops.

The south coast is approximately 50 minutes drive, with an extensive number of beaches to choose from.

There are a number of National Trust properties within easy reach, such as Hinton Ampner, Uppark House and The Vyne.

For train enthusiasts, the heritage Watercress Line runs steam train trips between Alton and Alresford.

Food and drink:
Waitrose, Sainsburys, Aldi, Lidl and M&S Food are located in Alton with delivery available to the barn from Waitrose and Sainsburys. If you don't fancy cooking, the atmospheric Rose and Crown is a short and pleasant stroll away through the village and offers delicious lunches and dinners, but be sure to book in advance as they do get very busy. There are plenty of other dining experiences available within a short drive and I am more than happy to provide recommendations.

Enjoying delightful views over fields and woodland, and with its own large garden and within walking distance of a children’s playground, football pitch, tennis court, cricket net, a pub and numerous public footpaths and bridleways, this house is an ideal place to relax. In a quiet village surrounded by open countryside in the South Downs National Park, this detached house is a perfect holiday home for an extended family (or two families holidaying together).
This family home has recently been completely renovated and decorated to a high standard. It has wifi throughout the house suitable for anyone who needs to work during their holiday. The ground floor is mostly laid with stone slabs, cool under foot in the summer and cosy with underfloor heating in the winter, while the two livings rooms have wooden floors, also with underfloor heating. The large kitchen-diner has bi-fold doors and windows looking out over the garden. The dining table can comfortably sit 12 people. The kitchen is well equipped with an electric range, induction hob, combi microwave oven, warming drawer, two dishwashers and an American style fridge-freezer plus a large overflow fridge.
The dining area opens onto the larger living room through sliding doors allowing both privacy or connection to the kitchen as you desire. The living room has four large sofas and two armchairs, a wood-burning stove, a smart TV with Ethernet connection and bi-fold doors onto the garden. The other living room has a corner sofa, a games table for 6, armchair, smart TV with Ethernet connection and DVD player and a piano. It also opens onto the garden through sliding doors.
Also downstairs is a shower room (perfect for off-road cyclists or kids straight back from the beach); a utility room with washing machine and dryer and plenty of space for coats and wellies; and a downstairs cloakroom.
Upstairs, there are five bedrooms and three bathrooms. The master bedroom is large and has an en-suite bathroom with a bath/shower and a smart TV. There is another double bedroom with an en-suite shower room and a further small double bedroom. The large twin room has two single beds which can be zipped together to form a super-king sized bed. The fifth bedroom has two bunk beds and a single bed. The family bathroom has a bath/shower. All the bedrooms look out over the garden and fields beyond apart from the small double room. There is also a travel cot available should you request one.
The south-facing terrace along the back of the house has plenty of comfortable garden furniture to allow you to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine and lazy BBQs on a summer’s day. For those wanting more activity, there is a ping-pong table next to the house and a trampoline at the far end of the garden. The large lawn just beyond the terrace is perfect for badminton, croquet or to kick a football around.
There is off-street parking for several cars.
There is much to see and do in this scenic area of Sussex. The property has access to an extensive network of footpaths and cycle routes in this area of the South Downs National Park which is rich in animals, birds and plant life.
The secluded village of West Marden has a pub (2 minutes’ walk away) which serves good pub food and has recently reopened under new owners. The nearby village of Compton (around 1 mile or twenty minutes’ walk along a footpath) has a village shop and tea room, a children’s playground, and a village recreation ground with a tennis court (guest booking fees apply – currently £5 per hour) football pitch and cricket ground with cricket net. For golfers there is a pitch and play course at Petersfield (c. 25 mins by car) and golf clubs at Petersfield, Rowland’s Castle and Goodwood. Motor racing and horse racing are nearby at Goodwood and international polo at Cowdray Park. The stunning long sandy beach at West Wittering (Blue Flag status) is half an hour away as is the Cathedral city of Chichester with its ancient cathedral, theatre festival, Roman ruins and shopping. West Dean gardens, the Weald and Downland Museum, Butser Ancient Farm, Uppark National Trust house and Fishbourne Roman palace are all within easy reach. Portsmouth with its naval dockyard housing Nelson’s Victory, the Mary Rose and many activities for busy children is an easy drive away.
The house typically takes less than 90 minutes to reach from SW London and under two hours from central London by car. There is an hourly direct train to London Waterloo from Rowland’s Castle train station, which is 15 minutes’ drive from the house. There are also more frequent, and faster, services to London from Petersfield train station (c. 30 minutes’ drive from the house).

In the heart of the South Downs National Park, with local walks right on the doorstep. The South Downs way is a couple of miles away and the Serpent Trail is a hundred yards away. Mountain bikes are available for hire locally. Amberfold is a great base for Goodwood (7 miles), Cowdray polo (3 miles) and local attractions such as Cowdray Park ruins, Petworth House, the Weald and Downland museum, Chichester and the Coast.

There are several local pubs serving good food and beer including the Unicorn Inn a mile away in Heyshott village, as well as a variety of bars and restaurants in Midhurst. Bikes are available to hire via a local contact who will deliver bikes to Amberfold ready to hit the road or trail. Minimum 2 night stay at weekends over the Summer (April to October) – single night stays welcome on weekdays all year and at weekends with a 1 night supplementary charge between November and March. Set on one of the prettiest roads in Arundel no 27 Maltravers is ideally located, being a few minutes’ walk from the centre of town. With old beams befitting its age, a working fireplace in the kitchen and a spacious south-facing terraced garden, this is the quintessential English country cottage. Superbly decorated and fitted out to a high standard, this family home not only offers comfort and style, but is also amazingly spacious for a two-bedroomed cottage and is a wonderful addition to the Laura Lye Holiday let portfolio of Arundel Cottages.

The large kitchen at the front of the house is well-equipped and has a working open fire. The French doors at the rear of the spacious living/dining room lead to the south-facing garden which gets sun for most of the day. The path to the side of the garden, separated from it by an ornate ironwork fence, leads to a twitten (rear passageway) to the town centre. Please note the garden is private but the pathway is also for the use of the next-door neighbour. There is a small drop of approximately a foot between terrace and path so do be aware of this if you are thinking of coming with very young children. The garden is terraced in stone and brick, is decorated with many ceramic pots, and has various levels, so guests should be aware that young children should be closely supervised.

Off the large landing upstairs are the two beautiful bedrooms and a family bathroom with bath and shower. The master bedroom has a super-king bed which can be split into two single beds and bedroom two has a double bed. Both rooms are charming and spacious and have a wonderful cottagey feel.

Well behaved dogs are welcome but they are not allowed on the furniture, upstairs or to be left unattended at the property. There is a charge of £27.50 per dog for stays up to 7 days and £27.50 for each subsequent week.

Please leave the house in a clean and tidy condition at the end of your stay with all washing up done and bins out. There is a travel cot at the house if you need one but you will need to bring all sheets and bedding to suit your baby.

Arundel is a 20 minute drive from Goodwood - famous for horse racing at Glorious Goodwood and motor racing at the Festival of Speed and Glorious Goodwood.

This holiday home is absolutely phenomenal. The home was originally designed by Joseph Hansom who designed the Arundel Cathedral and mirrored his style in these three exquisite townhomes. From the back side of the property, the windows look up towards the grand cathedral on the top of the hill, and at night, the Cathedral is illuminated for guests to see!

The home comprises of 3 floors. The ground floor consists of the living room, dining room, kitchen and outdoor courtyard. The kitchen contains a washer/dryer, wine fridge and dishwasher for guests to use. The dining room has an extendable table so will be large enough to seat 6 when extended. There is a half bath on the ground floor.

The first floor contains the master bedroom with shower room ensuite. This bedroom has a gorgeous view of the cathedral, a unique decorative fireplace and a king bed. There is another king bedroom located next door, with another beautiful fireplace.

The second floor contains 2 further bedrooms, with a king bed and double bed. There is a shared bathroom on this floor with a separate bath and shower. Each of the bedrooms has gorgeous views of Arundel Cathedral and Arundel town from the unique lead window frames.

A spacious and beautifully renovated barn, in well laid out and mature gardens, this family home sits at the foot of the South Downs and close to the historic village of Bosham. Chichester Harbour, Goodwood and the cathedral city of Chichester are all on the doorstep, with West Wittering beach and the more secluded East Head just 20 minutes away.

The house is perfect for one or two families, and has plenty of space for relaxing in all the reception rooms. It has five good-sized bedrooms - a master bedroom with a super king size bed and day bed, en suite bathroom and dressing room; a double room with a sofa bed; a small double room, and a bunk room, all sharing a family bathroom on the first floor, and a ground floor annexe with a double room and living room, en suite shower room and kitchenette - allowing the house to comfortably sleep 10, and a maximum of 12 when staying with small children. The ground floor is a large open plan space with a good sized kitchen with a walk-in larder, dining room and very spacious drawing room. There's also a boot room and downstairs loo. Both the dining room and drawing room have wood burning stoves for winter rentals. Outside, there are two main gardens - one with lawns and views overlooking fields and the other, a pretty walled garden with a table and chairs for al fresco dining as well as a hot tub for six people, on a separate terrace. There is plenty of parking space in front of the house.

The house is tucked away in the small village of East Ashling, at the base of the beautiful South Downs. There is a lovely pub that serves lunch and dinner, whilst the nearest shop is in Bosham - just a couple of minutes' drive away. Chichester has all the main supermarkets (all of which can deliver), as well as a good selection of shops and restaurants. There are some fabulous places to eat in the Downs and around the harbour, and families who love walking have endless possibilities (both short and long!) There are plenty of cycling routes (both road and off road) from the house, and for families who love the water, the possibilities are endless. There is sailing, kayaking and paddle boarding in the harbour and surfing at West Wittering.

- "The 16c house is quaint with sloping walls and floors, original beams and inglenook fireplaces. Sympathetically renovated with lovely quality finishing. The garden pretty, with lots of spring bulbs emerging and colourful chickens in a stable supplying fresh, warm eggs. Jonathan was the perfect host - attentive, thoughtful and generous. I used the pool, as yet unheated, for invigorating cold water dips, thawing out in a lovely, hot roll-top bath after with a view of the trees. Plentiful dog towels, a drawer full of dog treats and special shampoo should the need arise, very reassuring knowing Jonathan understands the needs of a holidaying dog owner so well! Great place to walk too, loads of footpaths, literally outside the gate, and the lovely Petworth for coffee and culture too."
