Our oceanfront Studio is located on a quiet lane of private vacation homes, 20 feet from the water, and overlooks a sea turtle spot, and out to the Pacific in the exclusive Poipu Beach. This lovely studio is located on the home's 2nd floor nestled on a private tropically landscaped, gated property near white sand beaches, dive, snorkel and surf spots, fine restaurants and two golf courses.

We counted 16 turtles from the lanai one day last week: Simply spectacular.

The home's outdoor dining area now includes a Weber propane barbecue and is located in a private lush tropical garden.

The upper studio's mini-kitchen includes a microwave, toaster oven, a coffee maker, electric kettle, blender, dinnerware, glassware, and a new 32" stainless steel GE refrigerator with two freezer drawers.

We love to sit on the studio’s oceanfront balcony and watch the green sea turtles swim below, the snorkelers and divers, and the kayaks and outrigger canoes paddle by. When the cool trade winds are blowing, it just doesn’t get much better.

Beautiful white sand beaches and a wide variety of cafes and restaurants are a short stroll or drive. Grocery stores and weekly farmer's markets too.

GETTING AROUND:
Unless you’re on a fairly leisurely schedule, you’ll need a car or other motorized vehicle to see and do everything on Kauai, which has one major road—one lane in each direction, in most places—that rings the island except along the Napali Coast. During rush hour, from about 6 to 9am and 3 to 6pm, the road between Lihue and Kapaa—the central business district—can turn into a giant parking lot, even with a third, “contra-flow” lane whose direction is determined by time of day. Bypass roads in Kipu (when heading north from Poipu) and Kapaa (when heading south) can alleviate some of the stress, but plan accordingly.

Note: The top speed is 50mph, with many slower sections in residential and business areas. Addresses in this chapter will use Kaumualii Highway (Hwy. 50) and Kuhio Highway (Hwy. 56/560), following local convention. Since highway addresses can be hard to spot (if marked at all), directions may be given with mile marker numbers, cross streets, and/or the descriptors mauka (toward the mountains) and makai (toward the sea).

By Car--All of the major car-rental agencies are represented on Kauai. At the airport baggage claim, cross the street to catch one of the frequent shuttle vans to the rental lots.

GETTING AROUND:
Unless you’re on a fairly leisurely schedule, you’ll need a car or other motorized vehicle to see and do everything on Kauai, which has one major road—one lane in each direction, in most places—that rings the island except along the Napali Coast. During rush hour, from about 6 to 9am and 3 to 6pm, the road between Lihue and Kapaa—the central business district—can turn into a giant parking lot, even with a third, “contra-flow” lane whose direction is determined by time of day. Bypass roads in Kipu (when heading north from Poipu) and Kapaa (when heading south) can alleviate some of the stress, but plan accordingly.

Note: The top speed is 50mph, with many slower sections in residential and business areas. Addresses in this chapter will use Kaumualii Highway (Hwy. 50) and Kuhio Highway (Hwy. 56/560), following local convention. Since highway addresses can be hard to spot (if marked at all), directions may be given with mile marker numbers, cross streets, and/or the descriptors mauka (toward the mountains) and makai (toward the sea).

By Car--All of the major car-rental agencies are represented on Kauai. At the airport baggage claim, cross the street to catch one of the frequent shuttle vans to the rental lots.

- "Overall we had a nice stay here. The condo is extremely spacious and decorated very well with beautiful artifacts and art pieces - you can tell the owners decorated it and stay here. You can watch sea turtles swimming from the second floor balcony which our kids loved. Beds are large and comfortable. There is a street between you and the ocean but traffic is relatively light. The resort grounds are well manicured and pretty. The only two real negatives were synthetic sheets and a considerable odor of what we think was pet urine downstairs. We also didn’t like the south shore of Kauai (we enjoyed the north shore much more), but that’s not a knock on the condo at all and is just our location preference. If you want to be on the south shore, this would be a good place to be based."

- "What an amazing stay. The views, the property, and location were fantastic. The photos are exactly what you get with the view even better. The rooms were comfortable and clean. As a longtime farm family we welcome you to come enjoy our place. You may walk around the property as long as you follow 3 rules: 1) Do NOT stand below coconut trees 2) Do not approach any buildings other than your cottage, and 3) do not engage our workers in conversation. They love to chat, but we need them to work :)

As a long-time, nearly 40 year resident farmer, I offer private farm tours to parties of up to 4 in size, for $100 per hour. I can provide a brief overview in one hour, but a more in-depth tour can last for 1.5 to 2 hours.

You may spectate, or join in on, a weekly slow pitch softball game we host. The field is located at some distance from the studio.

Twin Palms is secluded and quiet whereas the apartment puts you closer to the buzzing hub of this working farm, friends and family…privacy is respected and valued as an ethos on this farm. We had everything we needed to enjoy staying in and at the same time close enough to grocery and food options to pop out on a whim without a lot of planning required. Same for beaches and island activities! Turning off the main highway to a long quiet road with turnouts to the pineapple farm and a great beach on one side a botanic garden opposite, all walkable and add to the magic, majesty and beauty of this place! This resort is well laid out, nice and close to the beach and the pool/hot tubs were just steps away from the updated room, which is VERY well appointed and the beds super comfortable. • Is this a 1 bedroom condominium?
Once a Hilton hotel, the Kauai Beach Resort is a "condotel"(condominium-hotel). You get resort luxury and individually owned rooms. However of the 364 total units, not many are owners like myself where you can book directly and save a lot of money.
My suite is hotel size: 307 square feet with a 58 square foot balcony. Most units are about this size and have similar furnishings. Due to Kauai law for this type of accommodation(condotel), there are no cooking appliances in the room, but there is a coffee maker and the full size fridge with freezer. Ice machine and microwave are at 5th floor lounge. Cooler and ice packs provided.

• What's the difference between my suite, renting directly from the resort, or some other travel agency or website?
The difference is price, amenities, housekeeping, and choice of room. My suite is quite a bit less expensive overall and Amenity differences (subject to change):
-no maid service for stays of 7 nights or less unless you request it for an additional fee. For stays of 8 nights or more, I will provide a free mid-stay cleaning which will give you fresh sheets and towels.
-I do not charge a daily resort or amenity fee...a savings of $25/day
-the resort fee gives other guests the following extras (subject to change): newspaper, DVDs, PlayStation, and yoga classes. My guests can still use the pools, spa, restaurants, bar, room service, shops, business center, fitness center, car rental, and laundry room. Plus, my guests have to pay to rent DVDs.
-I do not increase my room charge for more than 2 guests...others charge $40 per person
-parking is $31/day plus tax. All guests pay for parking.
-during your stay, if you need assistance, you contact me. Most other guests would go to the front desk.

I know this seems like a lot of stuff, but I am hoping to clarify what your experience will be like at the resort. For most people, your enjoyment will be equivalent to someone paying $100+ more per night and the minor differences often are not noticeable or relevant. Plus, you are saving a bunch of money and getting one of the best rooms in the resort!

• Is there a kitchen?
No, but I have full size refrigerator with freezer and a coffee maker. There are no plates, bowls, glasses, or utensils. A microwave at 5th floor and ice machine. Sorry, Kauai law for this type of property does not permit cooking appliances inside the unit.

• What is there to do?
For short stays, you may want to keep it simple and stay at the resort enjoying the restaurants and bar, walks along the beach, tennis, spa, or one of the pools. For longer stays, booking a rental car ahead of time and picking it up at the airport makes sense. With a long term car rental to explore all over, there is an additional parking charge. Car rental rates vary depending on where you rent, so shop around. This great mid-island location puts you less than a hour away from the tourist activities on the north shore and south shore

• What is the bedding arrangement?
The suite is ideal for 2 adults and 1children using the king size bed, lounger, The lounger is 53 inches long by 27 inches wide. Maximum accommodation is 2 adults and 1 child.

• Do we need our own beach towels?
I provide towels to use at the pools or beaches.

• Is there a resort fee?
No, not if you are booking directly from an owner like myself. You can still enjoy the fitness center, pools, and more.

• What about WiFi?
WiFi is free throughout the resort and in the room.

• Is this a 1 bedroom condominium?
Once a Hilton hotel, the Kauai Beach Resort is a "condotel"(condominium-hotel). You get resort luxury and individually owned rooms. However of the 364 total units, not many are owners like myself where you can book directly and save a lot of money.
My suite is hotel size: 307 square feet with a 58 square foot balcony. Most units are about this size and have similar furnishings. Due to Kauai law for this type of accommodation(condotel), there are no cooking appliances in the room, but there is a coffee maker and full-size fridge. Ice machine and microwave are at the 5th floor lounge. Cooler and ice packs provided.

• What's the difference between my suite, renting directly from the resort, or some other travel agency or website?
The difference is price, amenities, housekeeping, and choice of room. My suite is quite a bit less expensive overall .
Amenity differences (subject to change):
-no maid service for stays of 7 nights or less unless you request it for an additional fee. For stays of 8 nights or more, I will provide a free mid-stay cleaning which will give you fresh sheets and towels.
-I do not charge a daily resort or amenity fee...a savings of $25/day
-the resort fee gives other guests the following extras(subject to change): newspaper, DVDs, Playstation, and yoga classes. My guests can still use the pools, spa, restaurants, bar, room service, shops, business center, fitness center, car rental, and laundry room. Plus my guests have to pay to rent DVDs.
-I do not increase my room charge for more than 2 guests...others charge $40 per person

I know this seems like a lot of stuff but I am hoping to clarify what your experience will be like at the resort. For most people, your enjoyment will be equivalent to someone paying $100+ more per night and the minor differences often are not noticeable or relevant.

• Is there a kitchen?
No, but I have full size fridge with freezer and a coffee maker. There are no plates, bowls, glasses, or utensils. A microwave and ice machine are down the hall. Sorry, Kauai law for this type of property does not permit cooking appliances inside the unit.

• What is there to do?
For short stays, you may want to keep it simple and stay at the resort enjoying the restaurants and bar, walks along the beach, tennis, spa, or one of the pools. For longer stays, booking a rental car ahead of time and picking it up at the airport makes sense. With a long term car rental to explore all over, there is an additional parking charge. Car rental rates vary depending on where you rent, so shop around. This great mid-island location puts you less than a hour away from the tourist activities on the north shore and south shore

• What is the bedding arrangement?
The suite is ideal for 2 adults
• Do we need our own beach towels?
I provide towels to use at the pools or beaches.

• Is there a resort fee?

Cozy apartment 2 blocks from the ocean & the amazing oceanside bike path. Conveniently located in Kapa'a town close to restaurants and stores, but secluded - a "world away".

The space
You can arrive, move in, unpack and unwind -- or head straight to the beach.

NOTE: Apart from the 17.96 % occupancy tax that is required, there are no "extras" you have to pay -- no “amenity fees,” no resort fees, no amenity fees, no fees for the wi-fi (it's free), no “energy” fees, no parking fees, no fees to use the laundry machines, no kidding.

The apartment will accommodate one person or a couple. Maximum: 2 adults. It’s compact but cute and comfortable - fully furnished and equipped, and artistically decorated with granite counter top, etched glass mirrors, indirect lighting, and marble floor inserts that will remind you of Italy. The kitchen, living room/dining area are open-plan with plantation shutters on the windows, a ceiling fan and (if you need it) an air conditioner. The kitchen is fully equipped with dishwasher, microwave, full-size refrigerator, blender, coffee-maker, toaster, and cooking equipment. The bedroom has a double chest bed (with space-saving storage drawers underneath), a ceiling fan, and a closet with hangers. The en suite bathroom has a stall shower and art tile on the floor.

The Immediate Neighborhood:

The apartment community has a unique ambiance. There’s an outdoor table and stone seats near the entrance among the trees where you can relax and drink coffee or tea...or (if you must) read your email. There’s a gazebo, barbecue facility, and open space for parking in the field adjacent to the property. Several coin-op washers and dryers are on site (no charge).

The Kauai bird

As you may know, the entire island of Kauai has an abundance of wild roosters and chickens, and they love hanging around near the property. The roosters tend to be quiet in the evening after it gets dark (when they roost), but they are prone to wake up and crow at odd hours during the night. Some people sleep right through it from Day 1, others say they get used to it after 1-2 nights - especially if they have busy, active days and are zonked out by the time they go to bed. We can't do anything about the roosters' body clocks, but we do provide our guests with hermetically sealed packages of earplugs for sleeping! Also running the AC and/or fans during the night reduces the crowing. Some find the chickens and roosters charming (we've seen many of our guests photographing them!) Other people find them annoying. But they are a fact of life in Kauai. We ask our guests not to feed them or encourage them, but they are persistent birds. One reason the wild chickens and roosters are in such abundance in Kauai is that there were 2 hurricanes (in 1982 and 1992) and domesticated fowl escaped and bred. Unlike Maui and other Hawaiian islands, Kauai never let the mongoose (chicken predator) in to the island.

OK now a warning: Kauai's chickens like to dig a hole to sit in to keep cool. So wherever you walk, be careful not to put your foot into a "chicken hole". We know from first hand experience :) The local hospital told us they get at least two patients every week who have damaged their ankles by inadvertently stepping into a "chicken hole". Sprains take three weeks to heal, but breaks take longer!

Kapa’a:

It’s the largest city on the island, although it is a “village” compared with any major mainland city. Kapa’a is centrally located, friendly and picturesque - as noted by recent articles in the Garden Island newspaper, Forbes magazine and the Huffington Post). At a pinch, you could get around without a car – walking, biking, or using the local bus service - but a car is important for real exploration at your own pace. You can walk to many stores, the Kapa’a post office, banks, pharmacies, Big Save supermarket, the beach, and restaurants. Kapa’a has numerous good restaurants & cafes in all directions -- including seafood, burger places, coffee houses, a whole variety of food carts, Thai, Mexican, Cuban and Indian restaurants - as well as local Hawaiian cuisine.

The Island of Kauai:

There is no shortage of guidebooks and good Internet resources describing this piece of Paradise – but you are invited to relax and discover Kauai at your own pace: “Slow down – this ain’t the mainland”. You’ll find a few recommendations in our Guidebook on the website. After you book, we will provide you with a detailed 35-page “Welcome” guide to help you plan your visit, including our personal insights into unique Kauai experiences and local secrets.

Interaction:

We have knowledgeable local staff who can usually respond quickly to any questions or issues. If you have any questions about your booking, I'm also available always by email and sometimes in-person. Otherwise you will have the place entirely to yourself. We don’t disturb you (unless you have a problem), and we don’t put a chocolate on your pillow.

Access:

Kapa’a is about 8 miles north of Lihu’e airport. After you have made your reservation, we will give you specific directions for finding this apartment since it’s well hidden. For days when you want to sightsee, you can drive easily to the north and south shores of Kauai. When you just want to relax, swim, or body-surf, you can walk to the closest beach (Kapa'a Beach Park) which is a beautiful crescent-shaped stretch of sand and good for swimming since it's protected by an offshore reef. Fuji Beach - also known as "Baby Beach" has shallow calm water and tidepools - great for young children to splash in. Or you can drive a short distance to Lydgate Park or Kealia Beach. Those are good nearby eastside beaches. But be careful -- Kauai is not the languid Caribbean - there are strong waves and potential rip tides at some beaches.

Don’t miss the Kapa’a bike path – Ke Ala Hele Makalae, the “The Path that Goes by the Coast” – there is a great 5-minute video on the web (hint: search Vimeo….). We have a selection of bikes available (see photo) that you can borrow and ride - at your own risk - for the entire 8-mile round trip to the far end of the paved path and back. You can also walk, jog or run on the path. Enjoy the experience of staying in Kapa’a, close to everything - but away from it all!  

The Fine Print:
• Check-in after 3:00 pm, check-out by 11:00 am. Depending on our other bookings, we may be able to offer a late checkout for a small fee, but you will need to arrange that with us in advance.
And please:
• No smoking anywhere in the apartment or the grounds, except in the gazebo at the far end of the field where cars are parked - and then only if there isn't anyone else present who might object to the smoke. Please extinguish all cigarettes and dispose of the butts in the trash container (don't throw them on the ground).
• Follow local Hawaiian custom and remove your shoes when inside the apartment. Otherwise Kauai's famous red dirt will follow you in!
• Be sure to turn off the AC, fans, stove, burners, and coffee maker when you are not in the apartment -- and also when you check out.
• No parties or loud noise -- except in or near the gazebo at the far end of the grounds.
• Don’t hang beach towels, swimsuits or other personal items anywhere outside your apartment.
• Don't leave your door open for long - mosquitoes will likely find their way in if you do.
• Don't feed or encourage the wild chickens and roosters!
• Don't let any of the cats inside your apartment. You may love the kitties, but be considerate of guests who stay after you (many people are allergic to cats).
• We provide bikes for your use at no charge (basic beach cruisers that show signs of wear including some rust on the metal parts), and you use them at your own risk. Our bike rules are posted outside the bike shed.
• Notify our on-site team immediately if something needs fixing.

Guest access
It’s a complete self-contained apartment with its own kitchen and bathroom and separate entrance. There is a large field adjacent to the apartments (where cars park) with strategically placed rocking chairs to enjoy the view of Sleeping Giant mountain and a field of grazing cows. Also, there’s a gazebo and a barbecue.
