The only downside was that the bed off of the kitchen only had a curtain between the bed and the kitchen, but that was clearly known form the description of the property in the advertisement. Forest Suite is located just a few minutes south from the village of Mendocino on 5 acres of beautiful redwoods. This 550 sq. ft. apartment plus 200sq ft deck, is upstairs from my 2,000 sq. ft artist’s studio, which is not in use when guests are staying. Built entirely with redwood, recycled fir and barn wood with cement counters and shower this romantic getaway is a very special spot.

The south wall is all windows facing the deck with deck chairs and a table with two chairs for dining overlooking the surrounding towering redwiids. It’s very peaceful and sunny and is frequented by honeymooners, artists, writers and those seeking total privacy. A few books and screenplays have been written here!

There is an eclectic book and DVD library to enjoy, internet, Direct TV and some boardgames. For your comfort there is a cozy gas fireplace, a ceiling fan, a standing fan and removable window screens in the hall closet. The kitchen is fully stocked and there are also yoga mats and weights for your use.

Take a walk through the forest; you will see a TRAIL sign by the driveway which will take you through the property and out onto Gordon Lane for a longer walk. There is a bench along the trail and also a deck in the trees for yoga or meditation, or just relax at the Suite and enjoy the tranquility.

A personal vehicle is totally necessary in this area. No public transportation worthy of the name!

We have most everything you might need for a simple meal. Simple amenities include organic instant oatmeal, coffee and tea.

There is no land line telephone here but cell phone reception is great.

No smoking. No pets.

Street parking is free and does not require any meters or permits.

Walking is the best way to get around. Bring comfortable walking shoes and discover the amazing details of this historic town!

This bright and beautiful custom home has plenty of comfortable space to make yourself at home, spread out, unwind, gather with friends and family, or have a romantic getaway.

The “dance studio” as it is known was originally just that, an expansive and beautiful studio built for dancers. It was then converted into artist studios and has since been renovated into a spacious home with high ceilings, lots of natural light, and hardwood floors throughout.

- "We absolutely loved staying here! It was the perfect little place for our long weekend to Northern Cali! Place was clean, hostess was kind and helpful, grounds were breathtaking!!! The strip of studios was hidden in plain sight. Plus, not the property’s fault: A huge event was being set up in the lawn right outside our property so parking was virtually impossible. There were no photographs of the outside of the property on the VRBO site, so we had no clue what we were looking for. Garden studio? Garden… There is a garden outside… These studios are visually in terrible repair from the outside. The iron patio bench outside our door was uncomfortable in the extreme, and probably lead based paint was flaking off it as we sat on it. The outside light was inoperable. Inside was comfortable enough, I guess. I mean it wasn’t like we were cooking for a group of people so the coffee pot worked, the microwave worked, the toaster worked, but not all at the same time as we have to unplug and re-plug whatever device we were choosing to use at any given moment. But the property was convenient for what we wanted to do, which was to attend the Mendocino Film Festival and we were successful in that and had a comfortable enough place to crash each of our two nights. It was clean. Bed is comfortable. Bathroom teeny but big enough. Shower adequate. Would we stay there again? Possibly. I think it was pricey for what it was but that’s Mendocino. Fit into the rustic Mendocino vibe. Any fancier…?"

Visit historic sites and famous locations including the nearby house from the TV series Murder She Wrote, starring Angela Lansbury. - "The Mendocino art center is wonderful. We loved being in town and so near the ocean. We loved our little apartment. The only thing I would request is that the outdoor lights are super bright, for them to be turned off at night. They’re not gentle lights. They are very bright, LED blue lights. Even though we had curtains, the lights came in from all around and made the room pretty bright at night. We stayed for two nights, and both mornings around 5:00 AM, somebody banged around in the shed below us. I’m assuming it was the gardener. The gardens are beautiful! I will say that the shower stall is very very small. I am 5’3”, 115 pounds, and it was very cramped for me. We loved our stay and would come back if it weren’t for the bright lights. Mendocino Village is absolutely charming, beautiful and such a magical place to stay."

However, first, some background on this property...

Originally commissioned by world-renowned seascape artist E. John Robinson and his wife, June, designed the main manor home that is next to this studio, which was inspired by their travels through the English countryside in the late 1970s and early '80s. Designed to echo the timeless elegance of a traditional half-timbered cottage manor, this residence is both a personal legacy and a living piece of art.

E. John Robinson (1932–2008) was celebrated for his breathtaking seascapes—over 4,000 in his lifetime—and was featured on four Reader’s Digest covers. His art instruction books and best-selling videos brought his passion to students around the world. The main home was his retreat, a space of reflection, creativity, and natural beauty.

Today, the main home (Lichen Manor) has been thoughtfully re-imagined by its current owner—also an artist—who was inspired by the soul of the space and the legacy left behind. While preserving the original heart of the home, they introduced a warm, country-modern style. The yellow pine resewn flooring, imported from a Georgia mill, sets the tone.

The gardener and I often work on the grounds in the afternoon, and maintain a very low-key presence.

The suite, with its cheerful, light-filled, east-facing sun room, has a well-appointed kitchenette (dishware, glassware, flatware, French press, microwave, convection oven, teapot, electric water kettle, mini-fridge). Before your visit, I will send you a list of all the breakfast delectables you can choose from and look forward to your response prior to arrival. Since I wrote a book about breakfast (MORNING FOOD from CAFE BEAUJOLAIS), I take this meal very seriously. And I even wash all your dishes!

You'll be just a mile up the hill from the historic coastal town of Mendocino, far enough away from the bustle and traffic for quiet and privacy, yet close enough to reach local activities and attractions within a few miles. You'll be barely a mile from Big River Beach. A 5-minute drive away, you'll find shops, restaurants, galleries, and various seasonal cultural offerings. From there, wend your way to the headlands, where you'll behold the dramatic glory of the Pacific Ocean. The space
This one bedroom, second floor historic flat in the very heart of the village of Mendocino may not be a five-star venue but in terms of location, view, charm, comfort, cleanliness, and dare we say downright cuteness, it is hard to beat.
Perfect for a couple, with a king size bed. In the living room there is a couch that can pull out, there is a large flat screen tv with streaming capabilities if desired and two comfortable swivel chairs that occupy the bay window with views of the ocean and downtown. Finally, a computer desk in the second window in the living room is perfect spot to check in with the world should you feel the need...Internet is provided.
There is a full kitchen, with all the conveniences, that features a mahogany table overlooking the town from a breakfast nook in the other bay window.
A basic but functional bathroom with shower completes the flat. It is a shared hallway with 2 other doors, the other 2 apartments are occupied by full time tenants. Please be kind and respectful of their home.
As for the location in the center of town, this could not be bettered for dining and as a starting point for hikes, rides, drives, the variety of shops, galleries, and a short walk to the scenic Mendocino Headlands State Park.

About the Village of Mendocino:

One of the most picturesque towns in California, the Victorian Village of Mendocino is perched on a bluff on the ocean side of California Highway 1 in Mendocino County.
In the front, it is surrounded on three sides by Mendocino Headlands State Park. In the back are Big River and redwoods.
The little town is very stroll-worthy, with beautiful Victorian architecture to admire. Streets are lined with one-of-a-kind boutique shops and art galleries that you will find irresistible, not to mention some of the finest and most eclectic dining in Northern California.
Spread out in front of Mendocino Village, Mendocino Headlands State Park is a must-stroll for its gorgeous water views.
There are miles of easy trails along the bluffs, allowing for magnificent photo ops of the ocean and the sea caves and arches along the coastline.
Big River Beach can be accessed from a cliff trail and steps that go down to the sand, or you can just drive up to it.

The Guest Nest is a newly renovated private guest unit with ocean views is located across the street from the Caspar Headland trail, 5 minute walk to Caspar Beach and store, with sand to stroll along, swim or surf, and 5 minute drive or 15 min walk to the Point Carbrillo Light House.

This beautiful single story guest suite is surrounded by three private decks for your enjoyment. It is 768 sq ft. and is part of a larger home.

The space
The Guest Nest is a beautiful spacious private place to spread out and relax while exploring the Mendocino Coast. The tall open beamed wood ceilings add a warm lofty feel to all of the rooms. The antiques, one of a kind art and collectables give the rooms a unique charm. With 3 different decks for your private use- the North for lunch and dark sky stargazing; the West for wine, ocean viewing, and sunsets; the sheltered South for morning coffee. There is also a shared fenced flower garden with views of the ocean and local wildlife.

Heron House is a large L-shaped house with guest suites at each end of the ground floor with shared garden in between. Both units can be booked together for groups up to 4 people.

Heron House is a large L-shaped house with guest suites at each end of the ground floor with shared garden in between. Both units can be booked together for groups up to 4 people.

Our suite is located upstairs on Main Street overlooking the beautiful headlands park with an incredible view of Big River Bay. With all utilities and accommodations, it will feel just like home! Here you will be able to enjoy complete privacy and a great glass of wine and relax on our outdoor balcony. Circa Ocean View Suite is in a convenient location walking distance from stores, shops, restaurants, beaches, and the headlands State Park.

Guest access
Circa Ocean View Suite includes a fully equipped kitchen (stove/oven, dishwasher, Microwave, toaster, coffee make, blender, etc.) great for cooking, giving it the homey feel, and the extra change in your pockets. The bathroom has a shower and bathtub. A desk is provided along with free WiFi, to keep working on the go! The bedroom includes a California King bed and lots of closet space. With a large living room, you can sit down and have a cup of coffee, enjoy the view. Circa offers off-street parking at no extra charge.

Suite is located over Circa clothing store, which opens from 10am-5pm.
