Treat your loved ones to a totally unique and fun experience along the very special Northern Coast of Caliifornia, and particularly in the Historic Village of Mendocino. It starts with a lumber mill cottage from the 1880’s that still maintains its historical character, and yet, is lovingly updated to fit the warmth, comfort, privacy and entertainment requirements of modern day Mendocino living and vacationing.
Walk to everything, fine restaurants, casual cafes, functional and clever shopping, both commercial and organic grocery stores, plus a local farmers market, beaches, pub, Headland Trails, Mendocino Art Center, or walk over to the Mendocino Theater Company for the current play offering. How about just relaxing for hours and hours and hours, or laying on the grass on a southern facing exposure. Listen to the foghorns, or listen to the nothingness, watch the birds and the boats. In addition to the Indoor Master Bathroom with Tub and Shower, take advantage of the additional outdoor fun and private shower in the garden.
Make Rhubarb Pie with fresh rhubarb from the back yard, or just sit in the garden hot tub, morning, noon and night. This spot is the center of The Mendocino Universe. Let those nighttime lit up star-studded skies seep into your soul and come back as you need. Let you dogs explore everything, or just laze on the deck in the back yard.
This is a unique property in a unique setting. A true Old World Mendocino Property dating back to the 1800's, both in reality and feeling. In addition to our feedback via vrbo, you can scroll towards the bottom here, just prior to the photos, and find our over 130 feedbacks left in our visitor comments book at the cottage.
The property is 47 feet by 160 feet. On the front part of the property sits two separate buildings with a breezeway between them. In one of the buildings is the master bedroom with a queen bed and sitting area. Right next to this bedroom, just a few feet away, with its own door for privacy, is the small bedroom set up mostly for children. That bedroom is great for young children and babies, keeps them close, but separate and private. It has a low single full length bed and a childs sleeping loft. Included in this building is the master bathroom with shower and tub.
Across the breezeway is the kitchen and living room. The living room and kitchen are both heated by a wood burning stove as well as a propane wall heater. Firewood is provided. The living room has a 40 inch Sony XBR Flat screen HD TV with satellite. It has a Blue-Ray DVD Player, which also receives free NETFLIX Streaming movies. It has Wireless Internet.
Upstairs over the living room is a sleeping loft with a double bed and window facing south with ocean view.
The garden also has a private outdoor shower, next to the hot tub plumbed with hot and cold water. Such a delight!! Once you are in the hot water, the shower is even great in the winter. Speaking of winter, those can be some of the best times. If you hit it right, you might get a really big storm that will bring you right down to the elements, rich in depth, and wonderful in its nurturing power.
There is a deck with patio table and chairs, along with a barbeque and hot tub.
Every year we have a fairly large cadre of repeat customers. Generally speaking, couples and families are the ones most drawn to the intimacy of this setting and cottage. It can handle up to 5 adults and 1 child or 1 adult and 5 children, and variations between.
We are always working on the property behind the scenes, upgrading, adding services, and generally making it more delightful and user friendly. We started a guest log about 10 years ago. We copied the visitors comments onto this web site. When people write reviews, they mostly write in the book at The Cottage.
So, to recap it all, If you are looking for a really comfy and down to earth home, centrally located, with all the modern amenities, ocean views, comfortable outside garden, with easy access to everything, with a multitude of sleeping possibilities, hot tub, embraces dogs, has character that dates back to the 1880's, is very private, and is in The Village (which we feel is the best choice for vacationing and visiting the area), is easy for couples, as well as for families, it is our pleasure to offer 'Garden Cottage'. As a side note, the website is listing us as 12 hours to respond to requests. That is a glitch, I am always on my cell phone and generally respond within minuets unless I am driving, etc. Always within an hour.

The Hayloft is a cozy and romantic retreat just two miles from the center of Mendocino. Warm and inviting and decorated with style and comfort in mind. Set in the lovely and mysterious Pygmy Forest, The Hayloft suite is a guest house to a main house but still private, quiet and peaceful.
The living room comes equipped with a leather sofa, a reclining chair, a fireplace and an entertainment center. There’s a dining area, a full kitchen and, in open-space style, the queen bedroom is “half-walled” to allow views of the fireplace and television. Several skylights bring in the sun and one of them directly over the bed provides a nighttime view of the stars and moon. Did we say anything about it being romantic?
With luxurious and comfortable appointments, The Hayloft is decidedly not a hayloft. To see all photos and details visit our website.

The private Beggs-Bishop Cottage is located on a residential street in one of Mendocino's historic neighborhoods. It's an easy walk to restaurants, live theater, shops, the Art Center, markets and the headlands. You can simply park your car and enjoy village life on foot or bike as we do.
The Beggs House, our home, and the Beggs-Bishop Cottage are hidden behind a 6 foot hedge which insures privacy in the garden or on your porch. The front of the Cottage faces West and the view outside the Cottage gate is Heider Field, a square block of open space land, part of the Headlands State Park. Bordering the north of the Field on Little Lake Street are the four "mansions" as the locals call them, the Packard House, Maxwell Jarvis House, Albert Brown House, and The Blair House which some of you may recognize as Jessica Fletcher's house on "Murder She Wrote." The Beggs House, like the mansions, is classified in the National Historic Register as a Category 1 Structure which means there have only been minor alterations to the original 1881 structure. As historic structures, there are some features of the grounds and buildings that are not ADA compliant: such as narrow sidewalks, steps, etc. We have an interesting history of the house and some of its residents in the Cottage for your reading enjoyment.
THE BEDROOM - Morning sunlight flows into the bedroom through the easterly facing windows. The beautiful antique wardrobe provides ample space for storing your belongings. The window that can be seen in the short hallway outside your bedroom looks out onto your porch and garden. The bed itself is queen size and pleasantly firm with down comforter and Irish wool blanket to keep you cozy and warm. Each side of the bed has a nightstand and reading light.
THE KITCHEN - The Cottage includes a complete kitchen: full size stove and oven, apartment size refrigerator, coffee maker, ample cooking utensils, pots and pans, tableware and all the usual things you need in a kitchen. If we've overlooked something you need, let us know and we'll do our best to rustle it up for you.
THE SITTING AREA - The sitting area can be considered an extension of the kitchen. Heat is provided by a gas powered heater in the style of a wood stove. Cuddle up in the easy chairs and prop your feet up on a foot stool. You'll be comfortable reading a book, visiting with the cook, or taking a cat nap. Or simply daydream while viewing the garden from the multi-pane window. A radio and CD player are provided if you'd like a little mood music. There is no TV service on the property. There is a DVD player and a selection of DVDs. Also high-speed internet service. If you forgot your vacation reading -- not to worry. The Cottage has a great collection of books including the history of Mendocino and surrounding areas. The Cottage is decorated with art by local folks in various media. Local and European photographs by John Uhlar, drawing by Chuck Hathaway, copper work by Mike Moreland, watercolor by Erin Deither, a Patty Walker print, weaving by Betty Lette, ... For the weather buff, there's a barometer and wind speed instrument.
THE BATHROOM - The tile shower, glass door and flowered ceramic sink by local artist Steve Larkin make this a pleasant room to perform your daily toiletries. An electric wall heater helps to dissipate the moisture and the window which opens lets you listen to the local birds: robins, geese, ducks, osprey, gulls, ravens, and . . .
STARTER KIT - Upon your arrival the refrigerator and kitchen table are stocked with a "starter kit." It varies, but can include: yogurt, juice, soft drinks, fruit, fresh breads, and chocolate treat. We always have fresh ground french roast coffee in the cupboard, sugar, milk, black and herbal teas, fresh cut flowers in the kitchen and bedroom.
Ah! The Porch. When the sun is out, it's the best weather in town. The porch faces west and the hedge blocks any wind and insures privacy. Pick a wicker chair, settee, double rocker or adirondack chair, get a glass of wine or iced tea, relax and enjoy the garden.
- "Beautiful garden and so clean. Loved being there for 5 days." - "Kathleen and Mike are warm, gracious, attentive and charming hosts that maintain a beautiful cottage that was perfect for our memorable stay in Mendocino. A short walk from the restaurants, the community theatre and the music festival, it made for a memorable stay. The cottage is clean with attention to every detail and warmth that made it a home away from home for us. Look forward to staying here again."

- "Great escape from the valley HEAT." - "Everything was amazing!! Only thing I would mention is the lighting in the kitchen is not enough for cooking when it's dark. Need more lights for sure! The coffer make is also a bit tired and did not work - had to make drip coffee. Would highly recommend upgrading this to match the rest of the gourmet kitchen. " - "Comfortable place to stay in Mendocino! The kitchen is fully stocked with pots and pans. The bed is in a lovely loft with views of the water. We had to pick up keys at a rental office in town, and some information is communicated through an app I couldn't use. The comfort and beauty of the place made up for the slight inconvenience."

CasparCottage is a charming, quiet, nicely and newly furnished cottage that we built on our five private acres, with a walk through a redwood forest to the WATERFALL in Russian Gulch State Park. We are located just 3 miles up the ridge from the ocean and 10 minutes from Mendocino or Fort Bragg. It's a perfect place for a honeymoon, anniversary, special occasion or quiet retreat. It has a comfortable queen bed with down comforter and nice linens, new sleeper sofa with a memory foam mattress, fully equipped custom kitchen, gas BBQ and picnic table with string lights above for enjoying the outdoors in the evenings, lovely custom cabinetry and a beautiful marble tiled bathroom with a jetted tub and large shower.
The cottage is private, spotless, very comfortable and nicely appointed. Flames from an enameled European propane stove bring the warmth and coziness of a fire with the convenience of a thermostat. There is a CD player, DIRECTV w/ HBO, DVD/VCR with small library of films, Satellite INTERNET connection, iron and hairdryer. We provide coffee and tea, toast and jam and fresh fruit and flowers. From the cottage you can walk through the Redwoods to a beautiful WATERFALL, as we are near the Russian Gulch State Park Waterfall Trail and bicycle trails in Jackson State Forest.
We will gladly direct you to great restaurants, nice beaches, beautiful hikes and activities on the coast. PRICES INCLUDE CLEANING AND BREAKFAST GOODIES!

- "This little cabin is charming and secluded. This was an anniversary celebration for us. It is close to Ft. Bragg and Downtown Mendocino. The scenery and location are perfect for trips to explore the beaches and forest nearby. We were able to hike daily. The owners are on site and are so great at accommodating whatever it is you need. They left breakfast for us and really tailored it to us. We have allergies and there are so many foods that can't be eaten. If I could offer a suggestion that would make it even better, is a different mattress. Thank you for such a great time!"

- "We were very happily surprised that this house was exactly as described-- and more. It is in a northern neighborhood of the town of Mendocino, across the street from an ocean cove. Though the view of the Pacific is partially blocked by trees from the front porch, a 2 minute walk down the street to a small park and benches offers a relaxing full view of the ocean, cove and waves as they crash below into the rocky bluffs below. The full kitchen was well equipped with plates, cups, cutlery and cooking utensils. The living room was comfortable and included TV with Dish Network, VCR and a few dozen DVDs. A public network wifi was available but the private network they offered was not. (I'll mention it to them.) The daily rental shown was reasonable for a one bedroom house but the total with fees and taxes was a bit of a shock for our 2-night stay. Be sure it's reasonable for you before finalizing your stay."

- "I can’t rave enough about Peter, the property owner, and the communication between him and our family to coordinate for our intimate wedding. He was flexible and accommodating to our needs. Our wedding guests could not stop talking about the beautiful scenery of our ceremony and reception. The cabins were able to accommodate myself and my husband, as well as our immediate family. Everything was clean and the kitchens are loaded with dishware! We are so honored to have been married among such gorgeous nature. The wildlife was bustling and we spent our first day there hiking and birdwatching. We were even lucky enough to watch the October supermoon! Whether you are having a wedding or just a weekend retreat with family and friends, this is your spot. Hearing the ocean waves in the distance at night was the cherry on top. Thank you Peter & family for making our wedding dreams come true! "

Your cottage is the Half Timbered Cottage. It is to the right of the Lichen Manor.
Originally commissioned by world-renowned seascape artist E. John Robinson and his wife June, the home (Lichen Manor) was inspired by their travels through the English countryside in the late 1970s and early '80s. Designed to echo the timeless elegance of a traditional half-timbered cottage, this residence is both a personal legacy and a living piece of art.
E. John Robinson (1932–2008) was celebrated for his breathtaking seascapes—over 4,000 in his lifetime—and was featured on four Reader’s Digest covers. His art instruction books and best-selling videos brought his passion to students around the world. The main manor was his retreat, a space of reflection, creativity, and natural beauty.
Today, the home has been thoughtfully re-imagined by its current owner—also an artist—who was inspired by the soul of the space and the legacy left behind. While preserving the original heart of the home, they introduced a warm, country-modern style. Yellow pine resewn flooring, imported from a Georgia mill, sets the tone.
(There are 3 homes on this property. Each has their own private access. Not to each others homes. Each one is rented out separately as a whole unit.)
Surrounded by lush pygmy and redwood forest, the property is a peaceful sanctuary where nature, comfort, and artistry converge. Whether you’re sipping coffee in the morning, curled up reading a book, or enjoying the textures and fine craftsmanship throughout the cottage, every detail is designed to help you relax, recharge, and feel truly at home.
Highlights:
*Located in beautiful coastal Mendocino on 20 acres, 6 minutes from downtown Mendocino
*Authentic English-style cottage designed by E. John Robinson
*Completely renovated with modern country flair
*Custom walnut kitchen & artisan woodwork
*Breathtaking English-style gardens throughout the property
*Surrounded by majestic pygmy and redwood forest.
*Lush pond with Koi fish, turtles, and frogs
A unique artistic retreat, rich in history and inspiration

CasparCottage. is a charming quiet nicely appointed cottage that we built on our 5 private acres 3 miles from the ocean and 10 minutes from Mendocino or Fort Bragg. Walk to the WATERFALL in the Russian Gulch State Park from the cottage. We are at the eastern edge of the park. We've been sharing our cottage with guests for many years and have many guests that return year after year. It's a perfect place for a honeymoon, anniversary, special occasion or quiet retreat. We provide breakfast goodies!
The space
CasparCottage. is a very sweet cottage that my husband and I built on our five acres near the end of a quiet road at the eastern edge of the Russian Gulch State Park. You can map our proximity to the park and also contact us directly as we have our own site. The cottage accommodates two or three adults or two adults and two small children, but not four adults. It is private and quiet and comfortable and very nicely decorated, and has a queen bed with nice linens, fully equipped kitchen, custom cabinetry, hardwood floors and a beautiful marble tiled bathroom with jetted tub and a large shower. The sofa becomes a double bed for one adult or two small children. Flames from an enameled European propane stove bring the warmth and coziness of a fire with the convenience of a thermostat. The cottage has DirecTV with HBO etc. and Starlink (fast!) wireless satellite INTERNET and a Bose stereo. There's an outdoor gas BBQ and picnic table and chairs with string lights above to enjoy the evenings outdoors. From the cottage there is a lovely walk through the redwoods to the WATERFALL in Russian Gulch State Park. There is a 120 volt EV charger on a dedicated 20 amp service with standard plug and GFCI for our guests. As we are at the end of a quiet road there is no ambient light, so our dark skies are great for stargazing! We welcome guests in our ceramic studio and woodworking studio. We provide coffee, tea, fresh fruit and nice bread for our guests. We have no extra fees and no cleaning fee. Let us know if you're celebrating something. It's all about hospitality!
Guest access
We also built our home and my husband's one man wood working shop and my art studio on the property that are nearby, but obscured by trees and a garden. The cottage is private, but we are available to our guests. We have a vegetable, flower and fruit tree garden on the property that guests can wander freely and we welcome guests in our art studios.
Other things to note
The cottage is OPEN and ready for our guests anytime after 4PM and check out is 11AM. Caspar Cottage accommodates two adults or three adults or two adults and two small children, but NOT four adults.

A perfectly relaxing stay...
5 of 5
The garden by the sea is an absolutely beautiful and COZY home.
We loved the quiet setting in a woodsy area with a nice view of the Pacific. The wood burning stove that heats the house warmed the home perfectly and also contributed to an absolutely relaxing vibe. If you sit on the day bed in the living room for too long, you might be in for a nice snooze or an early night. Soaking in the wooden Japanese hot tub was both the perfect start and end to each day. The kitchen was well equipped and we were able to make some nice meals. The garden was full of fresh herbs which we used to enhance our home cooked dishes.
Downtown Mendocino was about a 5 minute drive from the home and Fort Bragg was only about 10 minutes drive in the other direction. Each town was charming and each had their own perks, but two of the three nights we were happy to stay in after day tripping in the area.
If you're looking for pure relaxation, this is the perfect spot. We really enjoyed our time and I could definitely picture visiting again in the future. We didn't meet the hosts, but Kim and Juan did a great job creating a very welcoming experience in their beautiful home.

Perfect week in artistic setting
5 of 5
We spent a week in this darling cottage and had a great girl's getaway. Such a beautiful setting, the hot tub was spectacular looking up at the stars at night. A romantic setting, a little rustic and made for disconnecting from the outside world- altogether charming. Would love to return!

The Little Blue Farmhouse is a perfect escape for anyone looking for a peaceful visit to the Mendocino Coast. The house, built from old growth redwoods in the 1860s, will take you back in time...to a time when the Caspar Lumber Company was in full swing. Historical photos and stories are provided for those interested in stepping back in time. Caspar is an an inviting community today. Walk to a beach and the very accessible Caspar Headlands. The sounds of nearby sea lions are delightful!
The space
The house has been recently renovated with intention to keep the rustic charm/historic feel of the home. The kitchen is appointed for cooks (All Clad pots/pans and so much more).
There (depending on your carrier) won't be continuous cell service available at the house (readily available in town), but the Starlink wifi is strong! We have also put in a landline in case it is needed. We have provided a high quality projector for watching movies (we have an extensive collection to choose from).
The wood burning fireplace is the main source of heat in the house. There is a wall heater in the kitchen and bathroom for your convenience. You will need to be comfortable lighting a fire for heat in the main portion of the house. We will provide fatwood, firewood and a propane torch (for easy lighting) for your visit.
Other things to note
Be sure to check out "Good Bones" the restaurant at the Caspar Hub (just a short walk down the street). The food is great and you will get a sense of the Caspar community while there. This is where the locals love to gather and celebrate each other and the coast.

Welcome to Ames House, only 8 minutes from Mendocino, where you will enjoy the romantic seclusion of our 1970’s architecture and redwood groves. The house is located in the sun-belt, in the midst of Jackson State Forest’s mountain bike trails and Big River State Park. We are happy to do monthly rentals for a reduced rate.
The space
Ames House is one of two short term cottages on Big River Ridge. We are at the end of a beautiful 3/4 mile long road flanked by Rhododendrons, Firs, Oaks and Redwoods. We are tucked into a Redwood forest so quiet and private and yet so close (8 minute drive) to the town of Mendocino. Several different trails take you to the Big River Haul Road, to town, through old redwood forests with glorious old growth redwood stumps, or to a Pygmy forest. Bike trails are also abundant. Just up the road is The Woodlands State Park, a WPA wonder at the head of the Big River.
