The built in desk and chair provide a good work space with an ocean view. From the window seat, you may see whales going by with the naked eye, though we do provide binoculars. Apron, beach towel and cushions for the outdoor chairs are just inside the door. Also a foam roller and exercise mat for your use.

The space
You feel a sense of peace the moment you enter the main gate and as you wind up the drive to a beautiful wooden glen. Bordered on two sides by 15,000 acres of the Jughandle Reserve and Jackson State Forest, you're close enough to hear the continuous sound of the ocean while sheltered from the wind in a secluded sun belt.

With gorgeous meadows and rolling paths through a redwood forest you'll feel like you've entered a unique place of respite. Only minutes from Mendocino and Ft. Bragg you can visit fine restaurants, explore the magnificent coast, hike local trails, or simply stay on site and feel yourself unwind.

Guest access
You have access to a private picnic table and hammock next to your guest quarters. Located at the edge of the forest, you can step right out your door onto an idyllic trail through the redwoods. You are welcome to walk the various paths throughout the woods and meadows on the property and visit the barn and gardens. You may just bump into one of the owners working on one of their latest permaculture design projects. Please come say hello.

After years of welcoming people to this beautiful place and hundreds of incredibly positive reviews, stewardship of this special property is transitioning. The new owners –Lynn & Peter– are dedicated to preserving its unique beauty and character, but the horses and puppy will be leaving.

The property location is situated close to the town of Mendocino, approximately 4 miles directly east of town. It is a separate guesthouse from the main farmhouse. There are numerous trees surrounding the cottage, providing privacy. The views are of open meadow, forest and apple orchard. Lots of outdoor space; fire pit, redwood fairy ring with hammock, secret tree forts, lawn games, outdoor kitchen with sink, counter and BBQ.

The space
The cottage was originally an office, which we added a bathroom and bed area. My son and a friend spent a few years working with me to complete the renovation. Utilizing various items we found around the property, we up-cycled to produce unique finishes around the structure. Old plumbing handles became cabinet door pulls, window shutters transformed into a kitchen cabinet, weathered redwood water tank was milled and used as window and door trim, rusted metal roofing covers the outside walls and a childhood dresser became the base for the bathroom sink. The decor is kept simple and clean, giving a sense of calm and relaxation. I've endeavored to refrain from clutter, which enhances the feeling of space and openness. The cottage consists of a well laid out kitchen, open to the remaining area of the room. The bed is situated in a separate area but part of the overall space. There is a small alcove with two lounging chairs. There is approximately 300 sq feet of living space, a spacious private bathroom, plus two additional decks, each measuring approx. 100 sq feet. All adding to approx. 500 sq. feet total living area.

Guest access
Guests are welcome and invited to wander the property. There is a 100+ year old apple orchard, still producing succulent fruit in the fall. There are over 30 varieties of apples, most planted in the early 1900's. We've added some newer ones over the years, primarily Asian pear varieties. The vegetable garden is open for harvest during the season. Help yourself to produce when available.

Our property backs up to Jackson State Forest, so we essentially have a 90,000 acre backyard. Directly across the street from our driveway are numerous walking/biking/running trails thru Jackson State Forest. You can take a quick 15 minute walk or spend hours wandering around the forest. Several trails will take you down to Big River and to the beach. These trails can be challenging but a lot of fun. There are maps for the trails, located on the shelf in the bathroom. There are also some local books with hiking information.

Other things to note
Applegate Cottage is situated on 10 acres of mostly open land, bordered by Jackson State Forest on the south and north. It is surrounded by similar sized properties. We are close friends with all our neighbors and have remained in good graces with each other for over 30 years. Maintaining relationships is essential and common courtesy goes a long way. For the most part, it is a quiet neighborhood, with occasional tractor or chainsaw activity. Rarely will it impact guests. Please respect the privacy of our neighbors and do not wander onto their land.

Come and relax in this newly renovated getaway surrounded by huckleberries, wild rhododendrons, and the occasional wandering deer. "Le Garage" is quiet and relaxing. We are far enough from the coast so that we enjoy the sun when the fog comes in, yet close enough to run down and see a fantastic sunset when it's clear.

The space
This 2 story unit has been newly renovated with an open loft upstairs where you can relax while reading, playing games, watching your favorite streaming channel, or just taking a nap. Downstairs you find an open kitchen /dining area with all the essentials, a comfortable bedroom with a queen bed, and a bathroom with a large tiled open shower. There is a large covered patio looking out amongst the trees with comfortable furniture to enjoy your mornings or afternoons.

Though we do not allow our guests to bring pets, we do have two happy dogs of our own. Henry is a 13-year-old chihuahua mix, not yippy and very friendly. Daisy is our new addition and is a year old. She's a big, happy puppy, American bulldog mix.

A leisurely coastal scenic 5 minute drive, less than 2 miles, brings you to the heart of historic Mendocino Village. Centrally located on the coast just outside the village of Mendocino, the studio is in close proximity to numerous hiking trails, whale watching spots, seal rookeries, California State Parks, California Coastal Trail, beaches, and rivers.

The Bunk House sleeps 20 people and is brand new with four very large and stylish rooms: All the rooms have a queen bed, bunk beds, couch and table and chairs. There is also a very large living space (1,100 SF) with couches, tables and chairs and plenty of space for hanging out. The bath house and kitchen, in an adjacent building, are exclusive to the Bunk House and each room has its own dedicated bathroom. The Bunkhouse has 2 fire pits, picnic tables, trails, garden & direct access to the ocean and miles of hikes. Our property is located adjacent to Jug Handle Beach and Jug Handle Nature Preserve which includes a three mile trail to the Pygmy Forest and many beautiful headlands walks just out your front door. Our 36 acre property provides many opportunities for walking, bird watching, star gazing and quiet reflection. Jug Handle Creek Farm and Nature Center is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) nature education center and overnight lodging facility that serves as a gateway to Jug Handle State Reserve and the world's largest intact Pygmy Forest Ecological Staircase. Our 36 acres include a native plant nursery, community gardens, forests, meadows, and nature trails.
