Affectionately named the Caboose, this standalone guest house sits at the rear of our property on the edge of Hillsborough's historic district. Walk downtown to explore myriad restaurants, shops, and galleries, or hop in the car to access the sights and sounds of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.

The space
The Caboose was constructed in 2021. It offers a full bedroom with queen-sized bed and adjacent bathroom; a small living area; and an eat-in kitchen.

Sit out on a front porch rocker facing the Eno River. This property was saved from demolition, disassembled, moved, and restored in 2018. Most of its historic structure remains, including heart pine floors, original shiplap, and cathedral ceilings.

The space
This 470 square foot cottage was scheduled for demolition in 2017. It was disassembled and moved to our property in 2018. We lovingly restored it preserving most of the original structure. The cottage has heart pine floors, original shiplap and cathedral ceilings with exposed beams. The modern kitchen has a farmhouse sink, refrigerator and range. The spacious front porch faces the Eno River. Featured in the cottage is a mid-19th century Thomas Day architectural door surround. Located on a quiet downtown street walkable to everything.

Guest access
The entire cottage is for guests and is accessible with an electronic lock. Guests can walk to the Eno River from the property.

Parking is provided close to the cottage. There are stairs to access the cottage.

Cozy, wheelchair-accessible, recently renovated cabin with unique decor and a sitting porch, located in a beautiful, mature, piedmont forest that abounds with wildlife and has hiking trails along New Hope Creek. Ideal for a quiet retreat but only 8 minutes from UNC Hospital, Hillsborough Campus and within 15 to 25 minutes from Duke University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central University and historic downtown Hillsborough. Guests of all walks of life welcome.

The space
There is a campfire circle a short walk from the cabin. Also available for guests to use is a picnic shelter that overlooks New Hope Creek and an adjacent small basketball court.

Guest access
You'll be able to access the entire cabin except for the closet to the left of the bed. It contains cleaning supplies and equipment and access to the workshop in the basement. Because of incomplete projects and equipment in the workshop, it is off limits to guests unless accompanied by Jim or Libba.

Other things to note
While there is bed space for 3 guests, a fourth person could be accommodated on the longer couch.


The cabin began as a shop when we were building our house in 1986 and later became a group space for our mental health practice which we have called the Center for Creative Balance. Now, mostly retired, we have loved converting this space to share with guests who love the land and want a restful retreat!

The Store in Hobo: a dog friendly reader/writer’s retreat in a renovated general store.

Formerly “Paul’s Grocery” from 1943-73, the Store is on the Bellevue Mill Circle hilltop, an eclectic neighborhood bordering historic downtown Hillsborough.

Whether you’re coming alone, with a friend or a small family, this comfy space will inspire creativity and provide serenity.

The space
The Store’s south facing, front door opens onto a private fenced yard bordered by trees, a sanctuary for guests and their four legged friends. A lighted outdoor deck with seating are yours to use.

A back door on the north end faces King Street. This is where you will park outside your entry door through the bike shed. You may want to store your bicycles in the shed during your stay.

The front room of the Store is a working space with writing desk and comfortable office chair on rollers at a south facing window. Just off the writing studio/office is a bathroom with shower. You will find a closet to hang things off the studio/office space too.

The main living area includes a comfortable queen bed. Across from the queen bed a day bed sits under west facing windows, a perfect place to read or nap.

The queen bed sleeps two very comfortably while a third guest can enjoy the daybed. Should you have a fourth person sharing the space, the sofa works for a night or two.

The store retains the original Warm Morning gas heater for colder seasons and has the ambience of a fireplace. A wall mounted mini-split AC quietly keeps the place as cool as you like in the summer.

The entire space is tastefully decorated, very comfy, and filled with historic charm characteristic of this small, hip Southern town along with the owner’s love of his Minnesota, Michigan, and Great Lakes roots.

Guest access
Enjoy the back yard on the west side of the Store and the back deck attached to my house. These are common spaces shared with guests who may be staying in the Mill House. Please be respectful of others and their privacy as they are of you and yours.

Plenty of hot water from the Store’s own hot water heater.

Quiet and cool as you like space with wall mounted Mini-split AC.

Goldfinches, Cardinals, Bluebirds, Orioles, Carolina Wrens and more to see on the feeders out your windows near the west side of the backyard.

Kick back in our newly renovated barn apartment! Come lounge on the second story porch amongst the trees, or take some relaxation time in our hot tub area. Nestled in Hillsborough, but a short drive to both Durham, Chapel Hill/Carrboro, our space is the perfect respite for anyone visiting the triangle area. Come escape and enjoy the six acres of land surrounding the barn or take a trip (just 8 minutes) to downtown Hillsborough for a quaint afternoon.

Very close to many local wedding venues!

The space
This 450 sq ft apt sleeps four people. There is one full bed mattress and one queen pullout couch mattress, located in the living room. Full bath located in the bedroom. Full kitchen, washer/dryer, breakfast nook, and second story porch to relax. Our space is tiny but peaceful.

Other things to note
WiFi speed in the apt is 230 Mbps. Note the wifi password is all lowercase.

We have two friendly labradoodles who will stay in our gated yard when you visit.

The cold water from the sink faucet is filtered by a Reverse Osmosis (RO) Drinking Water System. Enjoy our clear, sparkling purified water which is especially good for making tea or coffee and is refreshing to drink!

We have many songbirds, butterflies, expansive night skies, and beautiful morning light fills the loft.
