- "Lovely location!" - "Beautiful desert scenery " - "Great place!!" - "Such a beautiful retreat! This area is so peaceful with a welcoming community." - "Enjoy the local folks at Mad Rabbit Cafe. Good food. " - "Great property with so much cool history. The javalinas wander around in the morning looking for food and are unbothered by the guests. The food at the bad rabbit was great and staff very friendly. One small negative was that the cabins have thin walls so you can hear your snoring neighbors. That won’t deter me from coming back though. "

The Neighborhood:
TERLINGUA RANCH: Located between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park and including much of the town of Terlingua, Terlingua Ranch is a private subdivision of over 190,000 acres, divided into 9,500 tracts owned by about 5,000 individuals and crisscrossed by 1,100 miles of dirt and rock roads. Tracts range from five acres to several hundred acres. It is some of the most rugged and scenic land in Texas.
Back in the 1960’s, the Ghost Town and much of what later became “Terlingua Ranch” was owned by racing legend and car designer extraordinaire, Carol Shelby and some of his friends. The decided to promote the area by holding a chili cook-off in the then abandoned Ghost Town. That little stunt of a cook-off grew into CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) which now hosts nearly 500 chili cook-offs around the nation and internationally, all leading up the championship cook-off every year in Terlingua. Shelby and friends later subdivided the Ranch and started selling it off to hunters and rugged naturalists. Over the decades, the area was reborn and an eclectic community of nature lovers, artists, musicians, adventurers, and folks just wanting to escape from “civilization” has grown and started to resettle this rough country.
People have come and gone. New buildings have risen while others have fallen, Dreams have been realized and others crushed. Through it all, the land remains. The harsh desert and vast openness encourages positive development and slowly swallows up and recovers from past abuses. The old cinnabar mine sites and ranching outposts persist as relics and ghost towns, some redeveloped, some carefully preserved, and others dissolving back into the desert. Abandoned dreams eventually become points of interests for those of us that stumble upon them decades later. Terlingua Ranch is a bizarre mix of old and new, good and bad, growth and decline, all completely unregulated. Modern homes with high values and stunning designs stand beside dilapidated do-it-yourself mistakes and abandoned ruins of the 1800’s and early 1900’s.
The landscape is even more varied than the people and the structures. Rugged mountains, deep canyons, wild arroyos, dry and wet creeks, peaceful valleys, breathtaking badlands, moonscape like mud flats, the remains of ancient volcanoes, and fossilized ancient seabeds. All of it nurturing a vast array of plant life and wildlife. Around every corner and over every hill lies new and unexpected surprises.
The Ranch is now home to a few hundred hardy souls. It is also dotted with a diverse array of vacation rental lodging options and campsites. Like the diverse land, they range in quality, style, value, and price. A few are amazing dream destinations. Some are good places to sleep. Others are the stuff of nightmares. (We don’t manage any in the nightmare category.)

The cabin was clean and well stocked, the directions provided ahead of time got us there with no troubles, and the views and star gazing were absolutely incredible. We'll be back!" - "This place we great. Everything you need for a great trip. Would definitely come back again!"

The Boca de la Roca cabin is built on 81 acres of private desert mountain property (no neighbors, no highways, no noise), and is nestled at the base of our 4,700-foot mountain - in the most majestic mountain range in Big Bend. The cabin is surrounded by mountains, large mesas, cacti, and other eye-catching desert scenery. All of Big Bend is beautiful, but we undoubtedly have the best 360-degree views of anywhere in Big Bend - hands down.
Relax and unwind with all of the creature comforts of home, and soak up the undeniably best views in Big Bend. This Terlingua lodging destination was built with an abundance of windows throughout to compliment the landscape day and night, accentuating the scenic terrain not only while outdoors, but from inside as well. The cabin is fully furnished, with a clean, luxurious, modern with an aged-elegance appeal. And it’s 100% off-grid – solely powered by El Sol.
- "We were met by Christin, one of the owners and followed her to the cabin. Would be hard to find on your own the first time but easy to return to once you have been there. Everything was exactly as described. Ross had called beforehand to go over everything and Christin took us through the property again when we arrived. Be prepared to conserve water and utilities as it is off the grid and rainwater supplied. If we hadn’t chosen this area in mid-June when temps were above 100 during the day I am sure we would have enjoyed it more. We cooked dinner and the gas stove worked well. Nicely supplied with all the kitchen tools and dishes you could need. We would rent again but next time in early Spting or Fall when not so hot. I highly recommend if you want something totally different but nice."

It was a bit of a drive to Big Bend National Park (at least an hour one way) but was worth it to stay in such a peaceful spot. ............Spectacular mountain views and great sunsets Tarantula Ranch is located over a hill about two miles from the nearest paved road." Experience life at the end of the road" inside a 320 acre compound. Tarantula Ranch sharpens your senses, the wildlife, the views, the smells, peace and quiet and of course the stars. TARANTULA RANCH has some of the darkest skies in the world. In the warm months its nice to sit on the front porch and have coffee with Billy and Maggie two friendly burros who like interacting with our guests, although you may have to share (they are the worlds biggest beggars). Tarantula Ranch has two cabins. The four room cabin can sleep six and the one room cabin sleeps two( although i did have a family of two adults and three children stay there a few times for a week). Both cabins have real "on the grid electricity",hot showers, toilet, septic tanks that work, kitchens furnished with stove, refrigerator, hot plates, convection oven, coffee maker, microwave etc.All linens and towels are furnished. We also have wifi and direct satellite tv with hbo and showtime, propane gas heaters for winter and refrigerated air conditioning for summer. We are about ten minutes from one of the prettiest swimming pools in Brewster county, Texas. With both cabins we can sleep a party of eight(although i have had ten there a few times but someone will have to sleep on a blow-up mattress or sleeping bag on the floor.) If you are only one person traveling alone or a couple and the large cabin is rented by someone else you can rent the detached cabin as a separate party. The detached cabin has a queen size bed, kitchen, indoor shower and toilet and satellite tv. You will have to contact me regarding the availability of the detached cabin. In addition to property here at the compound Tarantula Ranch llc also has other properties in the area. One in particular is at a lower elevation (warmer) for our winter time sunworshipers. It's common to have 75 to 80 degree days there in the winter. That property also has pictographs both Indian and Spanish. I have a jeep and a 4 wheel drive suburban that i can take people on a tour to my various properties to see how people have lived in the Big Bend from 8000 years to present with a little geology thrown in. You can sign up for that when you make reservations. If you are a golfer, as a member of The Lajatas Country Club, i can save you 20% off your green fee. At the end of a day of playing in the big bend it's nice to kick back with a drink in our hot tub that sits on a cliff facing west, listening for coyotes and looking for shooting stars. We also have an observation deck that hangs out over that same western cliff that the hot tub is on. The big bend has some of the darkest skies in the world. Here at Tarantula Ranch you are an easy drive( by west Texas standards) to all the tourist attractions in the area, the national park, the state park, river rafting outfitters, horseback riding, jeep tours and the Terlingua ghosttown where good food, good drinks, good music and good times are alive and well.
Keywords: remote, spectacular vistas, friendly burros and horse will interact with you, wide open spaces, great sunrises and sunsets. Also since we have real electricity we can offer all the electric appliances you need to make your stay comfortable, refrigerated air conditioning, kitchen appliances, satellite television. You will NOT have to walk across a parking lot or drive miles to use the restroom and shower. We have indoor plumbing!!!~ Also we have no traffic since we are more than two miles away from the nearest paved road AND inside a compound. Oh and you don't have to sleep on the ground in a tent (unless you want to). Some people have asked me to send them a photo of the interior of the small cabin. I can't. I'm not that good with computers so it will be awhile before i spend a day on hold with vrbo trying to get assistance on how to send a photo. I will try and give you a mental picture..... The small cabin has just recently been remodeled so there shouldn't be any roofs that fall in on you or a floor that caves in around your knee. Now, having said that, try and picture a box from the inside ..... four walls, one floor, one ceiling. Now picture a queen size bed inside the box (your eyes are getting heavy...) you are laying on the bed going slowly to sleep..... NOW this what it's like to stay in a room whether its the Hyatt on Wacker Street & Michigan Ave. in downtown Chicago or in the mountain wilderness of the Big Bend. They both keep the rain off and the coyotes out (as long as you keep the door closed). Look forward to meeting you, curt NOTE: DUE TO CORONA VIRUS-19 WE WILL BE SUSPENDING OUR JEEP/SUBURBAN TOURS AND GOLF DISCOUNTS.WE WILL BE ASKING YOU YOU TO SUPPLY YOUR OWN LINENS PAPER PLATES, PLASTIC CUPS, FLATWARE ETC. I WILL BE GIVING YOU A COMPLETE LIST WHEN I CALL YOU TO GIVE YOU DIRECTIONS.
- "Mr Swaffords Tarrantula ranch was great. Mr Swafford was a great host. The sunset views are amazing. My wife and I enjoyed maggie the donkey and eileen the mustang." - "Nice and quiet place." - "This is my kind of place. It's straightforward. It's beautiful...and it had Maggie who's a doll. (And it was away from crowded air b&b’s!) 10/10! Could not have been better!" - "Received good directions to the property. Property was as described. - "Great place, very functional for the family. Loved the inside and outside of the cabin for the hiking vocation with my family. The cabin was very clean, directions and instructions are very clear and detailed. Had amazing experience of star gazing at night and the quietness I have not seen in a while living in a big city. The place had enough sitting area outside and inside for indoor and outdoor trip accommodations. Thank you for the great experience. Loved all of it. Loved little touch with having drinking water and coffee provided by the owners/ managers of the cabin. Will recommend staying there to people with children and without children. "

- "Justin was an amazing host. He communicated everything I needed to know about my stay. It was beautiful and peaceful." - "I cannot even tell you how great this entire place is. There’s no one around so you may enjoy the outdoor shower worry-free of unintentional exposure. Lol. The privacy of the waste closet is definitely worth mentioning. It is separate from the bedroom quarters and it makes me want this at my house. The hammock is a killer touch. Every night I use it to unwind right before going to sleep by gazing up at the unbelievable sky full of stars like never before. It is so quiet that you can literally hear the leaves barely blowing on the trees. I had never experienced anything like this, the solitude, the gentleness of the sheer whispers you can hear. Everyone should experience this!"

Located on a working homestead with poultry and greenhouse, this cozy (aka small) room is a step up from basic camping. The room is 8x10, with a full size futon, small desk, and charging ports for your devices. The homestead is fully off-grid, with a focus on sustainability for the hosts who live on site as well as all guests.
You will have access to a firepit, communal kitchen, bathroom with flush toilets and hot water showers. One shower per person is included with your stay, additional showers are $5 and help offset the cost of hauling water from Study Butte.
360-degree views of the Big Bend night sky, freedom to hike and explore the property, also close enough to both the National and State Parks to make the ranch your starting or ending point for the day.
Important Information: Please Read-
On site there is a large water catchment pond which supplies the water for the ranch throughout most of the year, outside of drought conditions. There is absolutely no swimming in the pond as temping as it may be!
The majority of the year the ranch and surrounding areas are dry, typically seeing our rainy season over the late summer months. In the event of any rain, the roads to and from the ranch become mainly impassable. The roads are primarily bentonite clay which turns into a very thick mud when we receive rain and it will cause cars, trucks, SUV's, etc. to get stuck. This warning is not to discourage you, but to make you aware in the event we receive rain before, during, or after your stay. In the event you cancel before your booked date due to weather, a full refund will be offered to you.
- "Beautiful surroundings, and very friendly, helpful, accommodating hosts. It is super off-grid and no frills, so make sure you know that going in, but if you’re up for an adventure, this is a great spot" - "It was such joy staying here. It is very secluded and I found that It was just peaceful and not the least bit intimidating." - "If you want remote, this is the place. Call before for directions. There is a generator that runs all night. The bed I stayed on had some issues. I guess I didn’t understand the lack of amenities from the listing. The views are very good and other than the generator it was peaceful."

- "Directions were great. Pictures of the cabin were on point. Everything was clean and well organized. Everything listed was true. Amazing home like feeling." - "The location is amazing and situated in between Big Bend and the Davis Mountains. The grounds are taken care of and it is relatively private and quiet, there were some dogs barking and kids at the next door rental. The bed was decent and it had plenty of room for us and 2 kids. Also, the dark sky is delightful! The reason it doesn’t get 5 stars… The A/C and Heat was broken for the cabin and we were not told until we arrived and let the owner know. We were told it just broke with the previous renter, but if this was summer that would have been a huge issue. Luckily the temps were mild and we used the provided space heaters over night. This is well water and there is a very heavy metallic smell, I would not drink the water, even though they say it is filtered, just seems sketchy. Bring drinking water and be prepared to smell like a penny during your time there. There is an animal that comes underneath the cabin nightly and scratches, trying to get in. Sounds like a cat or rat, but it can keep you up for a while. It is very rural, so just keep that in mind. This is not a hotel… Overall, I recommend it, it was quaint and we had a great time. Just couldn’t give it 5 stars with the broken A/C and heat unit and lack of communication there."

- "Great time!" - "Overall, we had a good experience here. Had an issue with the door lock initially that put us out for a night, but the host was able to address the issue and still accommodate us. Property is as described and the location was great for exploring the Fort Davis, Marfa, Alpine triangle. Would recommend!" - "Distance from cabin to car. There was no space between wall & bed. Had to crawl over bed partner or scoot to bottom of bed, bot convenient for person with two bad knees"

It’s roughing it a little but, but nothing that people who like to camp can’t handle. We will be back! " - "I Wanted to detach from the big city and get away from the blaring noises and the general public. I got to reconnect with nature and soak in the tranquility it had to offer. Overall fulfilling stay! " - "We really enjoyed our stay at the dome. The dome is small but still spacious. There are 2 plug outlets that can hold only cell phone/tablet/watch. No cell phone service (tmobile). The host did a really good job at giving instructions on how to get to the property as we lost cell service. The entrance to Big Bend is 20 minutes. Who was Judy? She was a West Texas icon who rode her burro across the Big Bend Region, living outdoors and under the stars, with only her burro as a companion. As a child I remember seeing her riding along the highway, all of her worldly belonging strapped to her burro, a Judy sighting was special! She was a free & independent spirit, beloved by the locals, who saw more sunsets & sunrises than most ever will.
The Stay: Converted little `schoolie` under a very BIG sky! Relax in the grass & watch movies under the stars with the outdoor movie theatre. Be ready for a washer tournament in your private yard shaded by sun sails, and lit up with outdoor string lights. Snuggle up by the fire, or roast marshmallows in your private fire pit. Eat, drink, and be merry on the expansive shaded porch, or relax in the hammock and let your cares drift away.
Greenhouse Bathroom: Soak away the day in the vintage cast iron tub (bubble bath & Epsom salts provided). Private & romantic, located steps away from the bus.
This isn`t only a unique stay, but a comfortable one. You will not be roughing it, I promise!

The off-grid tiny home, cabin, shed, or whatever you prefer is a 16' x 10' structure which equals 160 square feet. It sits on a 5-acre tract nestled between the Christmas Mountains and 9-Point Mesa in the tranquility of the Chihuahuan Desert.
This is a pack it in, pack it out rental. Please take all trash with you upon departure. We do provide trash bags for our guests. Also, we do not charge a cleaning fee which helps you save money. So, we kindly ask that you leave the cabin neat and orderly.

Other things to note
Please be advised that there are no public or private lands anywhere in Brewster County that allow the operation of off-road vehicles without the owner’s express permission. ALL the land outside of the parks and wildlife management areas is either private or restricted. NONE of the public, private, or restricted land allows the operation of ANY vehicles off of the existing roads.
DRIVING, RIDING, OR WALKING ALONG DIRT ROADS:
The Big Bend Region is crisscrossed by thousands of miles of dirt roads. Most of the dirt roads are private and do not allow any use without permission of the owners. Others are open for use only to land-owners and invited guests. As our guests, we are authorized to grant you access to the vacation rental properties via the roads and driveways marked on the driving directions that we provide. While the use of many ungated roads in the area is generally accepted if you are on foot or in a street legal vehicle, we do not have legal standing to grant you such access. Please be advised that if you use other dirt roads, you may be trespassing and may be confronted by land owners, watchful neighbors, or law enforcement. Use of other dirt roads is at your own risk and is not expressly allowed or forbidden by the vacation rental owner or by Big Bend Vacation Rentals. Under NO circumstances should you pass through an open or closed gate without the express permission of the property owner.
RESPECTING LOCAL RESIDENTS AND LANDOWNERS:
The Terlingua area is a haven for tourists. It is also the home and refuge of many residents or landowners that miss the days before the Big Bend area attracted so many people. The vast majority of land outside of the public parks and designated wildlife management areas is privately owned and restricted from public use of any type. Some private property is fenced, marked with no trespassing signs, or with purple-painted posts (the legal equivalent of no trespassing signs). However, even if the land is not fenced or marked, it should be assumed to be private. Entering private property for any reason will likely result in a confrontation with the property owner, a watchful neighbor, or law enforcement. Fortunately, most of the best land out here is inside Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park. Those lands are set aside for your recreational use and enjoyment. Please do not wander onto adjoining properties or approach any homes, buildings, or campsites that are not obviously public parks or places of businesses. Please drive as respectfully as you would in a neighborhood with children, because that is what this is.
