Come enjoy the peace and quiet of the Texas Hill Country, while relaxing in the cool waters of the Dry Frio River. This cabin is nestled under a canopy of live oak trees and just a short walk to the river. The Dry Frio River gets its name from the fact that the spring fed river meanders under the rocks at times, giving the appearance of a dry creek bed. This means the water is always cold, even in the hot summer months!
The air conditioned cabin has a simple, rustic feeling. The family room has high ceilings with comfy leather sofa and loveseat. The fully equipped kitchen has an electric stove, oven, microwave, coffee maker, and plenty of cookware. The cozy master bedroom has a stone fireplace and a queen-size bed, with room for a portable crib if needed. The spacious bathroom has a lovely clawfoot bathtub/shower. There is loft area with two full-size beds and a beautiful view of the huge live oak trees.
Outside there is ample seating on the covered porch and around the fire-pit. A charcoal grill is available for those outdoor cook-outs. Just down the road, a short walk, is a community park area with a covered pavilion and outdoor activities. Wi-Fi is also available at the park area.
This is a great place for star gazing, hiking, fishing, swimming, nature watching, unwinding and making memories.
***This is the Texas Hill Country, complete with all the critters, big and small. Please bring appropriate protection, (bug spray, water shoes, hats, sunscreen, etc) to ensure you have a safe trip. Remember to respect the land, water, animals, and the people who reside here, but most of all enjoy the simple peace and quiet it has to offer.
- "Quite peaceful place, for sure going again. There’s a swimming whole right behind the cabin" - "Property is nice. Very comfortable with beautiful views. The Bunkhouse has a welcoming cozy feel and was designed to accommodate our two kids and our 7 grandkids. Both bedrooms have a full bath, are cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The covered deck is large and accommodating with ample seating, a well-equipped kitchen area, and a breakfast table. The yard space is shaded most of the year with our pecan trees. There is also a charcoal BBQ pit, two picnic tables, and a firepit. As you can see in the pics, we built the Bunkhouse onto our barn. We still have a few miniature horses around, a few dwarf goats(we drink the milk!) and some random chickens, dogs, and cats. They won't bother you, but are available to see if you would like "the tour".
Swimming the full one mile of our river is a unique adventure. We have the Blue Hole, the Emerald Pot, the Slip & Slide, and let's not forget the Katfish Kitchens. We will have a map to guide you along the river!
The Bunkhouse area is entirely yours, with plenty of parking area for your vehicle(s). If interested in seeing or participating, we still have some goats and chickens around the barn that need daily attention from us. Our house is nearby, but we are available if needed. Access to the river amounts to one full mile of both sides of our river(the Dry Frio). You will be able to walk up or down the river, look for fossils, or hang out at one of our favorite swimming spots. Bring your floats, lots of guests use their "pop-ups" and make a home base where they are hanging out.
We are very remote! It is 35 miles to Uvalde, the closest grocery store. Be sure and bring the food you want to eat and any other supplies you want on your stay here. Fill up your gas tank in your vehicle before you arrive. It is 18 miles to Concan, the closest convenience store. Leakey and Uvalde are both about 35 miles from the Bunkhouse!
Pets are allowed with prior approval and EACH pet will require a $50 pet fee.{1 pet-$50 pet fee, 2 pets-$100 pet fee, 3 pets-$150 pet fee.) Pets must be housebroken and well behaved. Pets are not allowed to roam freely out of the owner's sight.
We do have a large carrier that we keep on the porch for your pets (and your) enjoyment.
We will make driving instructions and access information available a week before your arrival. GPS instructions seem to work if you plug in our address, but just in case, we will send instructions via email.
- "We had friendly hosts, excellent amenities and an overall rewarding experience, especially for the little ones. If you are looking for a truly relaxing getaway from the hustle and bustle, this is the place." - "Our hosts were super sweet and friendly. The location was remote. The out door kitchen was great. Nice river spots. Everything was clean and neat at check in." - "If u want to get away from city life and enjoy the outdoors this is the place for u. BBQ,games, cooking outdoors, stars up at the sky, hiking up a mountain, and best of all the clear Kristal water from the river. Best place."

- "If you are looking for a place nobody will bother you this is it! Beautiful property, beautiful cabin, beautiful river! Looking forward to booking again." - "This was a beautiful property and the property manager is very attentive. We loved how quiet it was! And we loved being able to set up for the day by the river and enjoy the water. It was perfect for our kids (ages 3 and 7). Can’t wait to go back! The only comment I will make (and it’s just more of an FYI for future renters) is that the only place to really get any groceries super close is the gas station in Camp Wood. If you are okay with going a little further, Uvalde has plenty options. :)"

- "My husband and I enjoyed our stay. It was a short walk to the property’s private access to the river. The cabin was very clean and had everything we needed to be comfortable during our getaway." - "We loved staying here at Rio Escondido. The cabin was perfect for our little family of 3. We especially loved the private water access to the river. We had shallow parts to sit and deep holes for our son to swim in. One little suggestion, and it wasn’t a deal breaker because we brought our own swim towels, but for a family of 3 staying 4 nights the shower linens were very low, only one towel per person and only 2 washcloths were provided. If that’s the normal maybe just list to bring extras if needed?? But overall the cabin was exactly what we needed for a river front home. Thank you for the great weekend away, we will book here with y’all again!!!"

- "We were presumably some of the first people to stay in this brand new cabin and it did not disappoint. Everything was provided, from towels to real silverware, pots and pans, BBQ utensils, plates and cups.. basically just need to bring your swimsuits, bathing essentials and whatever food you plan on cooking. The river was beautiful and flowing, with a deep swimming hole directly in front of the property where dozens of tilapia, bass and a few catfish come to the surface to eat dinner around sunset. We enjoyed s'mores in the dip pool on the back porch, and grilled burgers and hotdogs on the provided grill. One suggestion for the property would be to make an area where a car or 2 could park closer to the river entrance, as lugging tubes and ice chests from the cabin to the river was a bit hot and tiresome. My only gripe is that after cleaning fees, taxes and insurance, my cabin ended up costing more than anticipated, and we were expected to thoroughly clean the cabin at time of departure, with a list of charges we would be required to pay if not cleaned to expectations- I believe something like $35 if any spill was left on a counter, $35 if any trash was left in the cabin, $35 if any food left in the fridge, etc. I agree with a cleaning fee, but it seems a little exorbitant if the guests are required to do the bulk of the cleanup. Not worth deducting any stars, as my stay, the cabin and the property were all lovely, but just something notable for management to consider."

- "We got there as the sun was going down and the sky was turning pink! Absolutely beautiful at that time, no light pollution and a lot of stars visible. Highly recommend for a quiet night. A bunch of bugs but that's what you should expect when being outdoors, be warned though. Ashley was so sweet when we met her in the morning during our hike. Animals were so friendly." - "The property was as described, it was clean and comfortable. It was well stocked and the host left us welcome treats. It was a very hot day but the AC worked very well and kept us cool."

Other things to note
We have a second cabin adjacent to this listing that comfortably sleeps seven. If you are interested in booking both cabins, please let me know!
Shopping/Groceries:
Depending on where you are coming from, Uvalde or Kerrville will likely be the last town you drive through that has a Wal-Mart, HEB, Walgreens, etc. Camp Wood is the closest town to the ranch and has a family-owned gas station (Get-N-Go) and a Family Dollar. Both stores should have what you need, but we recommend you plan accordingly before your visit.
Proximity to other attractions:
Chalk Bluff: Approximately 30 minutes. Most of the drive is getting off our ranch (~20 minutes). The remaining time is spent on the highway.
Nueces Canyon River: 20 minutes. Our County Road crosses two sections of the Nueces River and is a quick 15-20 minute drive from the cabin.
Garner State Park: Roughly 50 minutes to an hour. While we may look close on the map, rolling hills separate us from the Leakey/Concan area. You will have to drive through Camp Wood, but the drive is part of the famous Twisted Sisters, often said to be one of the most scenic highways in Texas.
Other things to note:
1.) The kitchen has a small stove/oven and a fridge/freezer combo.
2.) We do not have an ice maker in the cabin. However, the freezer is large enough for 1-2 bags of ice.
3.) The gate around the cabin is fully fenced in, making our cabin perfect for you and your furry friend(s)! However, we ask that all pets not be left outside unattended. We have other livestock and animals on the ranch that we would like to keep safe.
4.) Guests must drive down ~8 miles of well-maintained caliche road. While 4x4 is not required, if there is heavy rain, the roads can become muddy in some spots.
6.) Cellphone service can be spotty throughout the ranch. Depending on your service provider, you may have little to no service when exploring.
Please Note: Due to our seasonal hunting operation, certain activities are restricted during specific months to preserve wildlife patterns. Please review the schedule below to ensure your planned activities align with your stay:
