Our Cozy little cabin is the perfect getaway for all seasons. The sauna is an extra treat. The property is close to the tiny town of Osage and the Smokey Hills State Forest. The Shell River runs through the property providing the perfect relaxing background at the campfire. The large oaks provide beautiful green shade in the summer, an array of orange & yellow in the fall and a beautiful place for the frost and snow to settle in the winter.

Basswood Lodge at Cotton Lake—A Wonderful Birding Destination
Perched upon a breezy bluff with a birds-eye view across sparkling Cotton Lake Basswood Lodge is a perfect getaway for the birder, nature lover, or for anyone who might enjoy a few days of tranquility and a place to reconnect with oneself and the natural world.
Basswood Lodge is actually nothing more than a traditional Minnesota lake cabin, one of thousands sprinkled around the land of 10,000 lakes; this one as quaint and cozy as you might remember a lake cabin of days gone by. She’s tucked within the hillside to blend harmoniously with oak, maple, birch and of course basswood trees—a forest that provides shelter from the west wind and gracefully frames the lake view. If you enjoy birds and bird watching you will never tire of Basswood’s lake-side deck, eye-level with the forest canopy. Take your morning coffee outdoors, warmed by the morning sun, surrounded by beautiful nature. In fact, after a morning or two like this you may find yourself completely at home.
On the inside, Basswood is spare but complete and finely finished with lovely Douglas fir flooring; warm, reclaimed wood paneling and clear pine windows and doors. Offsetting the subdued tones of abundant wood features, paint colors such as “Morning Light” and “Crystalline” lend brightness to the ceilings and certain walls. Our main level consists of the kitchen, living room and dining area, and the adjacent master bedroom and bathroom. On warm nights it is pleasant to sleep with the French doors open to the screen porch, and wake to loons calling and the conversations of morning birds. A ship’s ladder leads guests to the loft which we’ve furnished with one full size bed, one twin bed and ample seating. The loft is a nice place to read on a stormy day. A feature window captures eagle-eye views across Cotton Lake to forested Shelley Island. Guests who take the loft accomodations will enjoy their own full bath as well.
There is a pleasant footpath down to our sand and gravel beach and the clean swimming water of Cotton Lake. Bass fishing is good right from shore, and better from the end of our 32’ dock. Bring your own boat for the best Cotton Lake has to offer. Public access is easy at the state access straight across from our cabin. Best of all the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge south boundary is one mile up the county road. The refuge offers some of the best birding in Minnesota and is wonderful for day hikes, road bikes and captivating scenery. It is a slice of Minnesota the way it used to be, complete with virtually all the wildlife and tree species we were blessed with, including two rare species—trumpeter swan and gray wolf.
Our family looks forward to enjoying the beauty and tranquility of Cotton Lake for years to come. We would love to share our delightful lake cabin with like-minded and appreciative guests.

As a word of caution, Basswood Lodge is situated on a bluff overlooking Cotton Lake. The lake path is not long but just a little steep. The walkway to the cabin’s main level is also upward, along a stone pathway, and a short stair step. In other words, the cabin may not be entirely suitable for the elderly, infirm or disabled guests. On the other hand, Basswood Lodge is entirely suitable for children and adults in reasonably good shape. And as a side benefit, the hike to and from the lake will get your heart warmed up and pumping, so when you have to leave for home, you’ll go in better shape than when you arrived.

Fully restored vintage two bedroom, one bathroom cabin on Lake Lida (south arm) with dock and beautiful views and 10,000 acres of Maplewood State Park in the backyard! - "What an amazing last-minute-getaway we stumbled upon. To say this was like something out of a dream is an understatement! All my life I have dreamed of a spot like this for a vacation. Not a resort, just me and my people, a quiet lake, a hilltop view, rustic, and set in a simpler time…I could not be more happy. Debra and Pamela have left nothing out in this little piece of paradise. Pizza cutter? Check. Air pump? Check. Coffee? Check. Laundry detergent and dryer balls? Check. Marshmallow roasting sticks? Check. Every last detail was perfect. We fished, swam, boated, read, canoed, and relaxed. The porch was the perfect place for meals, reading, s’mores, and sunsets. The windows overlooking the cabin give the perfect view of probably the best fishing lake we’ve ever been on. The topography of the surrounding area is gorgeous! You feel like you’re more up North than you are and it’s just lovely! We availed ourselves to the Maple Beach Burgers on our last day and are happy to have made the short trip over. We used the state park boat ramp. It was a little further than the public launch, but was better for our boat. Every detail of the cabin has been thoughtfully considered and Debra and Pamela were the best hosts. Without a doubt, we WILL be back!"

This beautiful fully furnished 2 bedroom modern cabin nestled in the Smoky Hills of Minnesota has all the amenities and is welcoming you!
Stepping in, you will be in awe of the rustic but modern finishes with plenty of wood accents.
There is a main floor bedroom with small closet for your use. Also, a loft bedroom with a queen bed.
The bathroom has a shower with glass surround. Also there is a full sized washer and dryer for your needs.
The cabin is built overlooking a small lake with excellent views and no other residences on the lake!
There is a trail along the lakeshore that boasts great views, especially in the Fall.
The covered screened in porch is begging you to sit and enjoy it anytime! Or else enjoy the open deck with a barbecue grill. There is also a bonfire pit with wood available overlooking the lake.
Come enjoy this property as much as we do. Watch the loons or the beavers from the kayaks in the summer or get out and snowshoe or do some sledding in the winter!

There’s a path for a deeper-woods hike, or walk up the road to some vistas of hay ranches. Fire pit has a nice view, and amazing night sky in the garden clearing. Also appreciated the screened-in porch, and lots of windows for natural light & fresh air – the cabin has a small-space design aesthetic with quality construction, lovely woodwork, and a charming maple syruping wall motif. The home comes stocked with kitchen essentials, bedding, towels, paper towels, toilet tissue, and soaps. There is a boat lift available for a fishing or speed boat. A paddleboard is also available to use. A brand new bike trail is available just behind the cabin, so bring your bikes!

***The backyard (the grass area not near the lake) is getting worked on and should be ready for guests at the beginning of June. We will update pictures as soon as it's available. There will be a stone patio with a covered gazebo and outdoor furniture including a propane firepit. The grill and blackstone will also be stationed in this area. Newly remodeled in 2021, the School House is a crafting destination for your group of up to 8 people. But it isn't limited to just crafting. The School House can also be rented for any sort of retreats from yoga to cooking to gaming or simply as overflow space for guests.
If you look close enough on the outside brick walls you will see the names of the children who went to school there. Some dating as far back as 1936 and still in the graphite pencil used. These outside walls tell a history and many local names can be found written.

Welcome to the Cozy Colfax House in Wadena! This 1950's charmer has been tastefully renovated and professionally decorated to suit the business traveler or the family on vacation! Within a short distance to several amenities including the Maslowski Fitness/Wellness Center (Indoor Water park!), Hockey rink, school and parks!

With 3 bedrooms 2 baths, living room, basement family room with wetbar and air hockey table, even having a "stay-cation" here will be....well...cozy!

The Space:
The bedrooms have the following:

Basement: Pull-Out Bed (It should be noted it is just a twin and is pretty firm).

Guest Access:
You will be able to access all areas of the home except for the owner's closet. The electrical panel room will be locked, but there is a hide-a-key on top of the door trim in case a breaker trips or if there is a water leak, the main is in there and can be turned off. Please know I have several tools in that room and I would prefer for them to not be used unless there is an emergency.

Other Things to Note:
Please know that the bottom 3 steps of the staircase leading into the basement are not at the same height. Due to the older nature of the home, the stairs are not 100% evenly distributed height-wise. The third step from the bottom has a larger drop and the last step has a small drop.

This is a 2 bedroom cabin with 2- Queen beds. It is literally 50 ft from the beach/lake.
The cabin has been remodeled using vintage pine. Bedding and kitchen utensils included. The beach is level and the lake is sandy bottom. There is a slide and floating platform in the water for the kids. Fish cleaning house and ice for sale. This cabin is part of Hidden Haven Resort. During the week is quiet and private and the weekends come alive.

Our house is on West Leaf Lake, located on a dead end gravel road. Guests may have as much privacy as they would like. Some spaces are shared since we also live in the house. Continental breakfast is available. The den area has cable tv, a loveseat, a small refrigerator, a printer, a table for computer work or putting a puzzle together. Sit lakeside on the spacious deck to enjoy the water, or make use of a two person kayak. Bring your own boat and tie up to the dock. Fishing on the lake requires a Minnesota license available at local gas stations. Closest town is Ottertail which is 7 miles away. It has 2 gas stations with convenience stores, multiple restaurants, and shopping. Henning is 8 miles away and has a Dollar General, a bar, a restaurant,and a grocery store. We are 18 miles from Perham, 17 miles from Wadena, 28 miles from Battle Lake, and 30 miles from Fergus Falls.

There are 3 golf courses in the area. Thumper Pond, Balmoral, and Oakwood.

Restaurants in Ottertail include Betty’s Pantry - open breakfast and lunch; The Woodshed -open lunch and dinner; Willy T’s - open lunch and dinner; The Ottertail - open lunch and dinner, Burgers and Shakes, - summer hours only; Oakwood Supper Club - open lunch and dinner.

Summer months Ottertail county is filled with activities. Surrounding towns host celebrations including Loony Days, Watermelon Days, etc. https://ottertaillakescountry.com is a great website to view activities in the area.

Just a few things to note before your stay:
The bathroom features a handheld shower head in the European style (not fixed to the wall), and there is a visible crack in the back-right side of the shower. While we’re waiting to have this repaired, it does not affect water flow or function—just be mindful not to point the shower head directly at the crack to avoid any leakage.

The mirror and sink are older and show signs of wear, but rest assured, the entire apartment—including the bathroom—is professionally cleaned before each stay. Please take a look at the photos to get a clear sense of the space, including the fact that the bathroom is quite small—make sure that works for you! There is no air conditioning.

In the bedroom, there’s some chipped paint on the wall with a bit of green paint visible underneath, but the room is clean and well maintained otherwise.

The past renter mentioned that it smells like a cabin due to the wood walls. Just something to note :)

Please know that the bottom 3 steps of the staircase leading into the basement are not at the same height. Due to the older nature of the home, the stairs are not 100% evenly distributed height-wise. The third step from the bottom has a larger drop and the last step has a small drop.
