Barrow Bay, Ontario; a picturesque Georgian Bay community, owes its origin to the once-thriving Bruce Peninsula lumbering industry. Today it is a quiet summer get-away, especially at Paradise. You can also access the trailheads of the Bruce Trail nearby!

A Sunday drive in the Grey and Bruce region can take you to many interesting and beautiful destinations off the beaten path. Along the way one can see many unique land forms of the escarpment. One of our favourite trips is to travel North of Wiarton, and turn east and follow the north shore of Colpoy’s Bay until we reach the road heading to Lion’s Head. A fantastic view to behold!

After passing Hope Bay you will reach a small community, which although its nickname is “Little Scotland”, its official name is taken from that of an English baron. Barrow Bay is named after Sir John Barrow, who not only served as England’s Secretary of the Admiralty but was also the founder of the Royal Geographical Society.

The site of the community is also geographically unique. Barrow Bay is situated between Cape Dundas and Gun Point which protrude into Georgian Bay. This is not unique in geographical terms, but what is unusual is that another body of water is located almost immediately adjacent to Georgian Bay. Little Lake was created by a narrow rocky spit of land separating it from Georgian Bay.

Judge’s Creek flows from the hinterland of the peninsula into Little Lake and on into Georgian Bay. This creek is named after Patrick Judge, one of the first settlers in the area. Judge acquired the lands surrounding the lake and the creek in the 1870s. In 1874 he built one of the first commercial enterprises in Eastnor Township, a sawmill. Later the Barrow Bay Lumber Company erected another sawmill on the rocky spit which separates Little Lake from Georgian Bay. The company used Little Lake as a storehouse for the logs which had been floated down Judge’s Creek, until they could be used or shipped elsewhere. Forest products were shipped to many Great Lakes destinations such as Detroit and Chicago.

The Barrow Bay Lumber Company contributed substantially to the development of the community. In 1877 a grist mill was erected above the falls on the creek. In the 1930s Clark Sensabaugh, the owner of the grist mill built a dam below the falls and installed an electoral system which provided the power for the nearby community of Lion’s Head. A hotel and a general store were also opened. To provide housing for its employees, the company built houses along Bruce County Road #9 through Barrow Bay. They were painted red and were known in the area as the “Red Houses”. A boarding house was also erected.

Around the turn of the century, a butter and cheese factory was built in the community, however its life span was short and very few records of its activities have survived.

Unfortunately, for the logging company, and the community, there was a limited number of trees that could be logged in the area. By the early twentieth century the lumbering era was but a memory. Another malady which inflicted itself upon so many early communities also took its toll on Barrow Bay. Fire destroyed many of the houses and the sawmill. The hotel met a similar fate in the early 1900s.

Early in the 1900s, the community was still dependent upon the vessels which plied the coastal waters of Georgian Bay serving the outposts of the peninsula. Road travel on the Bruce Peninsula was difficult at best. Consequently, the citizens of Barrow Bay depended upon the arrival and departure of sailing vessels as their connection to the rest of the world.

Today, Barrow Bay is a quiet hamlet on the Bruce Peninsula. Its picturesque beauty has attracted tourists to come and built cottages on the spit that once housed a humming saw mill. Little Lake, once the storehouse for timber cut in the hinterlands of the Peninsula, now plays host to swimmers and pleasure craft.

Have you ever wondered about why the waters of Georgian Bay can appear to take on a beautiful aqua colour? It's a product of light refracting through calcite in the water.
Calcite comes from the dolostone that makes up the escarpment. Rainfall events (rain is naturally slightly acidic) or water agitating surrounding rocks can cause calcium carbonate to leech from the stone or other calcium-rich compounds, such as marl, and crystallize in the lake water, becoming calcite. These crystals double-refract the light (also called birefringence), creating the beautiful hue that our eyes see.

Guest Reviews:

- "My nieces and I had the most incredible weekend at Peninsula House, and I can't recommend it enough! From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the stunning design and serene atmosphere. The modern farmhouse charm of this luxury cottage is unmatched—it's like stepping into a magazine! The cedar shake exterior instantly transported us to the quaint coastal towns of Cape Cod, while the interiors were a perfect blend of rustic elegance and modern comfort. One of my litmus tests to tell if a property is thoughtfully cleaned is to open a kitchen drawer and see if it’s organized and the utensils are clean. Peninsula House passed with flying colors—the kitchen was spotless and every detail was impeccably arranged. We spent our days soaking in the beauty of the forest views through the expansive windows, and the evenings relaxing in the Scandinavian-inspired sauna—pure bliss! The screened-in porch was the perfect spot for our family gatherings, offering both comfort and a close connection to nature. Every detail of Peninsula House is thoughtfully designed, making it the ultimate retreat. We left feeling refreshed and already planning our return. This place is a true gem on the Bruce Peninsula!"

Barrow Bay, Ontario; a picturesque Georgian Bay community, owes its origin to the once-thriving Bruce Peninsula lumbering industry. Today it is a quiet summer get-away, especially at Jack's Retreat.

Barrow Bay, Ontario, Canada covers all shores of Little Lake and the nearby homes and cottages on the shores of Georgian Bay. We are south of Lions Head, which hosts our closest shops and services. A small, man made channel joins Little Lake to Georgian Bay, which allows fishing boats and pleasure crafts to navigate from one lake to the other. We are 85% seasonal cottagers and 15% permanent residents. Almost all residents are members of the Barrow Bay Property Owners' Association. The association helps improve the well being of all members.

- "Beautiful home and property. Jack's Retreat is most welcoming. Everything you would need and more is made available here. Thank you for sharing. xo" - "Nathan house is very large and has all the amenities you need. The only issue that we had was that the property wasn't clean and ready for the season. The management company had a mistake and they didn't clean the house, before I had the chance to complain - the property manager came with a bottle of wine, apologize and sent the cleaning team to clean the house. They also refunded the cleaning fee. I was happy with how they approach the matter. Another issue is that the outdoor space wasn’t ready for the season - furniture, balcony and even the dock was very dirty with bird’s poop and spider web all over. Outdoor furniture was missing cushions to seat on. Also we couldn’t use the Kayak as it was all full of mud and we had to look for the oar."

🌟 Airbnb Reviews & Star Ratings Matter

Please help us maintain our ability to host by understanding Airbnb’s 5-star rating system. Here’s how it works:

⭐ Guest Review Guide:
• 5 stars – Great stay! Would return.
• 4 stars – Several issues that should be corrected.
• 3 stars – Major problems.
• 2 stars – Should not be listed.
• 1 star – Host should be removed.

Airbnb views anything less than 5 stars as a sign of serious problems. Hosts who fall below a 4.8 rating can lose Superhost status. Below 4.3, listings may be removed entirely.

Even small mistakes are expected, and hosts have the opportunity to address issues during your stay — please communicate! We’re committed to making your visit as enjoyable as possible.

How to Leave an Airbnb Review

Introduction

Suppose you just stayed at an Airbnb. It was clean, reasonably priced, the listing was accurate, and the host communicated well. But it didn’t blow you away. When you leave your review, how many stars do you give? 3? Maybe 4? You might think that 3-stars means a place is average, and 4 stars is a good rating. 5-star reviews are reserved only for the most luxurious, above-and-beyond experiences.

Unfortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Airbnb holds hosts to a strict 5-star-or-bust expectation. They take any review that is less than 5-stars to indicate that there are major problems with a property or host. In fact, if a host’s account average drops below a 4.8-star rating, then they lose their Superhost status. On top of that, Airbnb could permanently remove a listing if the average drops below a 4.3-star rating!

Because of this, receiving a 4-star review is very damaging to a host. Obviously if someone deserves a 4-stars or lower, review them accordingly. But it’s good to keep in mind what consequences a 4-star review can have for hosts. A 5-star Airbnb rating indicates a great stay—not necessarily a perfect stay. Here’s a general guide to help with your Airbnb reviewing:

Guest Rating Guide:

5-star: Nobody is perfect, but I enjoyed my stay!

4-star: There are several issues that need to be corrected.

3-star: There are major problems.

2-star: This listing should be removed.

1-star: Ban these hosts for life.

But what specifically should guests be considering in their reviews? Airbnb indicates that the following five things are sufficient for a 5-star review:

Cleanliness: Every room that guests can access is clean, there’s no dust or mold on surfaces or floors, linens are clean, and trash is clear from previous guests.
Essential amenities: hosts provide toilet paper, soap, linens, and 1 towel & 1 pillow per person.
Accurate listing details: Address and bed/bath details accurate, photos are up to date, and amenities from listing are available and functional.
Easy check-in: Check-in process is clear and simple.
. Proactive communication: Host is available to the guest during their stay.

Within these categories, the bar is low enough to allow for small mistakes. No host is prefect. And if there are problems, there is also room for the host to correct things during the guests’ stay. For example, suppose the internet goes out unexpectedly, for reasons beyond the host’s control. The host calls the internet company immediately. Even if it takes a few hours for things to be fully fixed, the host should not get a lower review, due to their concern and effort. Along similar lines, hosts should not be given a lower rating for things such as: location isn’t near enough to a grocery store, a bug got into the house, dust on the lamp shade, small stains on the clean towels, neighbors that look scary, a power outage, or even a malfunctioning door lock.

What Airbnb Reviews Are Not

Rating systems are a common part of our lives. To help further clarify the Airbnb review system, it will be helpful to see how Airbnb contrasts with other common rating systems.

Airbnbs Ratings are not Hotel Ratings: Similar to Airbnbs, hotels are rated with stars, on a scale from 1–5. A 1-star hotel is the cheapest, dirtiest, place to stay that gets the job done. A 5-star hotel is a rare high-end luxury hotel that you can only find in the finest locations of the best cities.

While these rating systems might seem similar, this is actually a totally different rating system than what Airbnb uses. An Airbnb listing should NOT be rated lower than 5 stars because it does not measure up to a 5-star hotel. To use an analogy, you don’t go 100mph on a highway in Canada just because the sign says “100.” Both are numbers on signs on the side of the road, but one is measured in kilometers, and the other in miles.

Airbnbs Ratings are Reviews: What about reviews? It is normal to look at a review for a business that has 4.5–4.8 stars and think it is a very good rating. However, Airbnb holds hosts to a much higher standard. In fact, host are held to near perfection, with severe repercussions. If a host drops below 4.8 stars, they will lose Superhost status. Losing Superhost often causes a host to lose money, limits their customer service/support from Airbnb, and their listings are removed from valuable search filters. Worse yet, if an Airbnb host drops below a 4.3 rating (which is seen as a serviceable rating), that hosts could have their listing suspended and removed from Airbnb. Airbnb punishes anything but perfection.
