The staff who greeted us at check-in were so friendly and welcoming. Our room was comfortable with plenty of space. We enjoyed dinner in our room from the on-site restaurant where we also had breakfast prior to checking out. I highly recommend eating here and checking out the gift shop full of Hawaiian goods. Also, in the gift shop is a cooler of wine/beer which can be enjoyed in the comfort of your room. The staff was gracious enough let us borrow wine glasses and a corkscrew for the night. Overall, this was a wonderful place to stay while visiting the national park. Our only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer!"

- "I don't usually write a lot of reviews, but I specifically came back to this booking that we had in April of 2022 because I've thought about it so much since that stay. This was possibly the most unique setting I've ever had the pleasure of staying at; this was a hobby farm filled with free-range animals that wandered all over the grounds. The portion the owner uses as a visitor space is a wonderful little apartment attached to one of their outbuildings. It had views of the pond and all the animals, yet we felt completely left alone (in a good way!) We had a wonderful night's sleep away from the bustle of town. If you're looking for a unique experience in Hilo I'd highly recommend this incredible property. They made us breakfast the following morning and it was wonderful. We only stayed one night so I can't comment on a lot of the hospitality outside of the breakfast we had, but I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that it would all be equally great. Fair warning; there is not much to do in the town of Volcano, so I'd suggest packing snacks and drinks if you're planning to stay for more than a few days. One other fair warning: This is in the rain forest; you may encounter muddy terrain so be careful if you have a cheapo rental car. We had a Jeep and had no issues. If you want a really neat experience with good hosts, don't hesititate to book this property. "

However they don't last long, and added to the sense of excitement and mystery of the stay. 5 minute drive to Volcanoes national park, 40 minutes to Walmart, Target, and cheap gas in Hilo. Access other areas in about 2 hour drives to the north east coast or west coast. Can't wait to stay again!"

- "Beautiful location in a very quiet neighborhood. We stayed a week at Volcano Hale. Bought our own groceries near the airport since we read there were no stores near the house. Drove over 2 hours from Kona and less than an hour from Hilo when we did day trips. The house is only close to Volcano National Park. We did everything from seeing the turtles on Black Sand Beach, 4 wheeling to star gaze up over 13,800 feet on Mauna Kea Volcano, 4 wheeling to Green Sand Beach, saw Akaka waterfall, the sea arch, snorkeling at Captain Cook Monument, hiking 4 miles, secluded beaches, several costal cliff overlooks etc. This home was very comfortable in the middle of nowhere with beautiful flowers and we enjoyed the short moments we saw other guests. Everyone is tired after sightseeing so we all just slept. We cooked most of our meals here. There is a refrigerator to keep groceries cold. A stove, microwave, coffee maker with coffee provided and a toaster. Lots of clean towels, shampoo, soap and toilet paper provided. No lotion or conditioner. We had to empty the dehumidifier daily and even had a guest from downstairs ask us to turn ours off because it rattled his ceiling. I guess bring ear plugs so you can sleep peacefully like we did. Our room #306 on the second floor had 2 queen beds. Same floor as the kitchen and dining room. The ground floor had several rooms, own entrance, bathroom and sitting area. The 3rd floor has another bathroom & 2 bedrooms. Yes we recommend this home. "

- "Stacey's home could not have been more perfect. Upon opening the door I immediately felt peaceful and at ease and in awe of how beautiful it was. Her home is beautifully and tastefully decorated and the fresh flowers were so exquisite that I had to keep touching them to see if they actually were real. The home is light and airy, with tons of windows and feels much bigger than it’s actual size. The bed is to die for (honestly struggled to get out of it each morning it was so comfy). The kitchen is fully equipped and light and bright. The grounds are just beautiful. Lush green plants everywhere, immaculately cared for. Except for the banana trees and palms it almost feels like a sweet cabin in the mountains. With that said, the temperature is a bit cooler here but the electric wood stove was the absolute best. And the hot tub was perfect. With the temperature being cooler, it was a treat to be in the hot tub and marvel at the night sky and stars. This lovely home really is just right down the street from the Volcano National Park so it was especially nice to be able to go for long hikes and not worry about a long drive back to the house. Communication with Stacey was excellent. Directions are spot on. You will not regret your decision to stay in this lovely home!!"

We think this vacation rental is ideal for 2 adults or a family. It is not always ideal for 4 adults as there is one queen bed and one double bed, so if you are especially tall or large the double bed might be too small for you. We want everyone to be most comfortable while staying in Volcano Village Serenity Suite!

We have comfy "hapi" coats for you to wear and soft fuzzy socks if needed. You will be "happy" here!
A generous locally sourced breakfast is provided on the first morning in your suite. (Note vegetarian but not vegan) It will all be in the fridge when you arrive. Our water is excellent, so don't buy any bottled water.

Like our other highly reviewed property (VRBO #403855), we have attempted to make Fern Cottage a perfect retreat for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the peaceful Volcano lifestyle at its best. We also offer a wonderful retreat for kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the lush hapu'u fern and ʻōhi'a rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer.

Our house is a cozy but spacious 900 sq ft 2 bed/1 bath house that sleeps 2-5 people comfortably. The high vaulted pine ceiling and wood floors naturally juxtapose with the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the numerous large windows throughout the house. A spacious covered half wrap-around deck greets you as you exit the house, and provides an excellent location to take in the views of the surrounding forest on our half acre property.

Both bedrooms have high-quality comfortable queen-size beds and a queen-size sleeper sofa is available to provide a third bed to accomodate your party's needs. The master bedroom has its own entry door to the covered porch. The main living/sleeping area is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families looking to stay with us, we prefer there be at least one adult per child, if possible.

Lovely new 2 level island style home, beautifully furnished, built in the middle of the only native tropical rain forest in the country. Dr Stephen Tarek a recently retired Chiropractor lives quietly upstairs in a separate unit and is available for all immediate needs.
As all homes in the Volcano area are somewhat remote, this is also a good security measure. Ground level of home has 2 private bedrooms with new queen beds and luxurious duvet comforters and bedding. Living room has a very comfortable sofa bed full size. There is also an Aero full size bed with all bedding. I am adding an extra bathroom and bedroom off to a small area beyond the back of the home. There will never be work on this when guests are booked. Only between bookings.

One large bathroom with Jacuzzi tub and shower. All wood floors and ceiling fans with gas fireplace and beautiful full chefs kitchen with all new Samsung appliances and washer/dryer. Large lotus pond and 2 private covered patios (lanai) with seating. Long desk looking over pond to comfortably be on laptop. Closest home is 400 ft away through the forest, so no next door barking dogs or roosters. Extremely quiet and peaceful, unique and a fully Hawaiian experience. Perfect for those who want to explore and hike in an upper elevation tropical rain forest. Not really the place for loud late night drinking parties.
Children are welcome. But. Please note that there is a fish pond with no fence around it. The home is furnished more on the high end with real wood floors and all white duvet covers, linens and towels. Children and teen agers bring a wonderful energy to any home and so far have been great to have here. The home is not exactly "kid friendly" with antiques and artworks that can be pulled down if the child is over active. If this is the case there are many rentals that are in the area that would be a better fit for you if your children are super active.

"NOT TO MISS" Big Island Attractions: Volcano National Park hikes and Big Island hikes in general (host can suggest best as there are many); Boiling pots waterfalls; Akaka Falls; City of Refuge in Kona; Hilo town, Hilo Saturday open market, Liliokalani Japanese Gardens/Coconut Island; Volcano open Sunday market; Beautiful drive on highway 250 from Waimea to Hawi and then on to Pololu Valley (great view place and/or hike down to beach/valley) Beach may not be safe for swimming; Honokaa town and Waipio Valley. Beautiful drive from Pahoa to ocean in puna is approx. 2 miles out of Pahoa off highway 130 to 137 called Kama'ili rd. / Opihikau rd. (two names), when at ocean turn right to Kahena beach, most beautiful black sand beach on big island. Entire coast here is a magnificent drive and around 20 min from south to north end without stopping; Beautiful drive between Akaka Falls and Hilo has two names: Scenic Route and Old Mamalahoa hwy. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is on this road and can be used to GPS the drive. There is a hiking trail next to the garden that goes to the ocean; Beautiful drive from Volcano to Kau desert trail. This trail is usually dry when it is raining in Volcano area. There are Hawaiian warrior footprints in the lava here; Kahena black sand beach (clothing optional and busy on Sundays when there may be 6 konga drums and dancing on beach); Two unique and beautiful swim areas near Hilo are Richardson's Ocean Park (small black sand beach here, be sure to walk past the lifeguard stand, and Carlsmiths beach park are two beautiful and unique swimming/snorkeling spots near Hilo with turtles: Hapuna Beach is a wonderful long white sand beach with crystal clear water and sometimes great bodysurfing. It is usually sunny and dry (best early or after 4pm and on weekdays for less people). The City of Refuge (Pu'uhonua O Honaunau) and Kelalakekua Bay are not to miss and are in the most beautiful area of Kona. So many guests plan with online information that is outdated or not accurate or maybe posted by another tourist who was only here for 2 days. This causes many to miss the best parts of the islands and/or waste their valuable time.

Please note that the upstairs of the home is a Private area. Also, the best hiking and walks are at the Volcano Park but some guests walk in the neighborhood. Please don't walk to the right beyond the home as it is a private road.

Volcano village cabin is nestled within the beautiful tropical foliage that the Volcano National Park has to offer. Beautiful array of Ohia trees with red blooms, Hapu'u ferns along side with Camellia trees of red and pink blossoms. Scattered blue hydrangea amongst the bright red anthuriums line the borders of the property as well.

Native Hawaiian birds such as the Apapane ( red) and the I'iwi ( orange) are seen fluttering about. They have melodic chirping all day long. Catch a glimpse of them flying about in the tall trees.

This two bedroom cedar cabin is quiet, cozy and nicely self contained for a comfortable and relaxing stay. At an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet nestled in the Volcano Village forest, our cabin welcomes you. The first bedroom has a king sized bed, 100% soft cotton sheets with a fluffy warm down pillows and duvet. Plenty of closet space for storing suitcases and hanging your clothing. The side tables have reading lamps on either sides of the bed. The bedroom view is looking out into the Ohia forest.

The second bedroom is perfect for those who love to be in twin bunk beds. Flannel warm duvet and more fluffy pillows for a sound warm sleep. There is also a nice closet for more storage and hanging of clothing. Both bedrooms have wall heaters with individual settings to keep you warm on those cooler evenings.

Down the hall is the bathroom. There is a stand in shower, toilet and sink. Bright lights and full mirror. The window is stained glass art of green foliage and red anthuriums

The living room area has a firm and comfortable sitting couch with a love seat attached to stretch out your legs. Throw blankets available to add to your comfort. There is a nice easy rocking recliner which can easily become a favorite napping chair. The TV is cable and there are shows you can watch, we offer WIFI as well.

Cute updated kitchen to cook you own meals, or enjoy a night out at one of the fine restaurants in the village. There is seating for four inside the cabin , and also seating for four outside through the French doors onto the deck. A gas barbeque grill is available for your cookouts.

In the covered parking garage is where the washer and dryer are located.

The quiet street we are on, Alaula, is named for another way the Hawaiian language refers to both the light of early dawn, and to the day-glow of sunset before twilight sets in, creating the perfect setting for Halehikiola.

Thus, Halehikiola is a house with a mission: Our goal is to enliven your spirit with hospitality, comfort and invigoration each time you visit the Big Island of Hawai‘i environs of our neighbor, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, and spend time on the East side of the island. Bring a journal to capture your thoughts and transcribe your memories—what we call Sense of Place is exceptionally strong and compelling here.

In respect for the land it dwells on, the house is elevated; it was designed and built to sit atop gentle outcroppings of an ancient lava flow (do take note of the stairways in our photos). Vaulted ceilings reach up through the forest canopy and feature 2 large skylights; Halehikiola feels open yet intimate, comfortably surrounded by the natural wild beauty and cool green foliage of the rainforest. Gently rock to the bird song all around while sipping your morning coffee. We offer a small wood burning fireplace for chilly evenings. The living room has a comfy sofa, chair, flat screen TV for streaming your favorite channels and free WiFi. Our custom kitchen is full of appliances, cookware and dishes for cooking local produce til your heart's content. Located in the Ohia Estates neighborhood, Mele Nani, is less than a 10 minute drive to the famed Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and about a 40 minute drive into Hilo. We provide local recommendations (Things To Do and Restaurants!) in a binder located in the home. Volcano Village has a few wonderful restaurants and fantastic galleries. Within an hour's drive you can experience dashing waterfalls, craggy hikes around dormant volcanoes, daring ocean cliff outlooks, vibrant cultural shops and restaurants, and most of the world's varied climate zones. We recommend staying at least a week and packing light layers and sturdy shoes to get the full 'Big Island' adventure. E komo mai (welcome)!

What to Bring: Volcano can be chilly at night and when it rains so pack a few long layers and sturdy hiking shoes to maximize your enjoyment of our location! Things to know:

There is no sound insulation in the dividing wood wall it is shared with. The other side of the wood wall is my room. I work remotely online in my room and start work at 5/6am HST; I will try to be quiet as I wake up, however, I may have to take calls sometimes at that time that you’d be able to hear through the dividing wall. Sound proof ear plugs to sleep in will work to avoid noise for you.

To be clear, you will be sleeping in a private bedroom which can be locked & secured by you along with private clothes hanging space, private two twin beds or king bed (you choose), private outdoor door access, and access to the shared bathroom/kitchen/dining room/living room. Your room is private and all your things inside can be locked by you in your room. It’s just due to no insulation (including no sound insulation) you can hear to the other room and it can get cold at night.

The whole residence is available which includes a large yard and an adjoining area called the Koa Meadow where you can relax, picnic and enjoy the sounds of the birds and wind through the trees. There is a small cottage in the corner of the property where the caretaker lives.

The house has an electronic lock at the front door with a passcode which will be provided prior to check-in. There is a key, which will be in the kitchen, for access to the house from the back patio/lanai.

Other things to note
The homes in the volcano area are on catchment water, rain water. We have a filtration system which makes it fine for cooking, drinking, bathing, washing dishes and clothes. Bottled water is provided for drinking for your first day of stay. You may purchase gallon water in Hilo town prior to driving to the Volcano area for additional drinking and cooking.

The Volcano Village is located 30 minutes south of the main town of Hilo. There are only two small general stores, so It is best to do your main shopping for food and water supplies in Hilo, prior to heading to the Volcano area.

The house is tucked away in the Volcano Forest and access through a one lane winding road with no street lights. It is best to get there during daylight if possible. We will provide detailed driving directions prior to your arrival.

Volcano is 4,000 foot elevation. At night the outdoor temperature average is 53°F (12°C) and during the day time around 71°F (22°C). The house is adequately heated by the propane fireplace in the living room which has a hand held remote control along with an electric space heater for the bathroom.

Per Hawaii County regulations:
Quiet hours shall be from 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., during which time the noise from this short term rental unit shall not unreasonably disturb adjacent neighbors.
Sound that is audible beyond the property boundaries during non-quiet hours shall not be more excessive than would be otherwise associated with a residential area.
Guest vehicles shall be parked in the designated onsite parking area which includes the carport and all graveled areas.
This unit shall not be used for commercial purposes.

Other things to note
At about 4000 ft. elevation, it gets chilly at night even in the summer (50s to 60s) so bring a sweatshirt.

We compost organic waste and reuse what we can. When you se the labeled compost containers, the trash liners stay relatively clean and dry and can be reused (reducing plastic in our landfills),
A recycling bin is located under the staircase.

We encourage conservation of resources/utilities. To keep you comfortable, we provide socks, bathrobes and plenty of blankets.

Tap water comes from the rainwater catchment tank and is potable with UV filtering.

If you plan to buy groceries, keep in mind that availability is limited in the small village of Volcano so shopping in Hilo or Kona offers better selection and prices.

My place is close to great views, restaurants and dining, family-friendly activities. The Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park.. The address listed is Hilo however we are actually located in Volcano near the National Park. You’ll love my place because of the location, in the Volcano rain forest, bird life.. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, families with kids, and big groups.

The space
Lumi Anela, Room 3 at Aloha Crater Lodge has a private entrance/bath with shower and kitchenette. We offer a queen bed and a twin day bed, tv with dish network and table for 2 with 1 extra chair.

Guest access
Bird watchers welcome. Enjoy the natural rain forest surroundings, search for hidden gems. Kazumura cave is currently closed for improvements.
No Guest access through rear of property, only utility vehicles gas and water.

We live on site at Aloha Crater Lodge, however if we are not present when needed please feel free to call, text.

Other things to note
We have much cooler weather up here in Volcano, 4,000 feet elevation. Bring layers or warm covering for evening viewing. No problem with mosquitoes and most bugs, just moths in season.
