A large, private, three bedroom, two bath, house with magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean. Each bedroom is luxuriously appointed. The living room and dining area have a truly incredible six window view of the Pacific with white water waves crashing over exposed rocks. The house has a fireplace and two wood stoves, a well equipped kitchen and a large deck for enjoying the sunset. In addition to the three bedrooms is a cozy loft and quiet areas to read and relax.
You'll be a five minute walk to lovely Agate Beach, part of the Duxbury Reef Preserve. There you will find access to the Pacific Ocean, a quiet beach area and tide pools perfect for nature explorers of all ages. Nearby is also Bolinas Beach, a great place to play in the sand or take a surfing lesson from the Bolinas Surf School. A short drive by car is Stinson Beach and Point Reyes.
Close at hand are some incredible walks along the coast, including some trails into the southern end of Point Reyes National Seashore. During your stay you can also explore historic Bolinas. Founded in the 1850's, Bolinas has long served as a weekend getaway for San Franciscans, though in earlier times they would arrive by boat. Bolinas remains a great retreat and maintains a local culture shaped by the 1960's counter-culture movement.

Update Regarding for Bolinas Water Supply Winter 2022:
The water situation in Bolinas has improved and rules imposed in the summer of 2021 that asked for water conservation and had the potential to lead to water rationing have been suspended. Rainfall in 2021 refilled the reservoirs, however rainfall in 2022 is again lower than what it has been historically, though not as bad as 2020. Out of caution, we still ask guests to make efforts to conserve water. Guests should take note that if conservation rules are re-imposed (in the past that meant guidance to use less than 125 gallons of water per day per household) we will ask guests to honor them.
- "The owner was wondering to work with. She was very easy to communicate with and very, very helpful. The house is well stocked, had plenty of room and wow, amazing ocean view! I look forward to staying again." - "We adored our time at this property. You cannot find anything at this location at an affordable price. The views from the home are amazing from anywhere on the front side of the house. The three private bedrooms, plus the loft, allowed my family to spread out after being cramped in hotel rooms. It is about 45 minutes of winding roads from Mill Valley. The views are gorgeous but you definitely need a driver who doesn’t mind driving up and down a hillside. But this is pretty typical of anywhere you’d stay on the coast in this area. Our favorite room was the family room with a large TV…after a long day of adventuring outside you can catch up on whatever show you are too busy to watch in everyday life…with the views of the ocean readily available!"

Clean, cozy house with gorgeous natural light in the gated Seadrift community. Manmade lagoon for swimming and boating on one side, Bolinas estuary filled with ongoing parade of egrets, pelicans and herons on the other. Easy walk to the beach and tennis courts. A perfect area for kids to run, bike or skate freely.
Cable TV, ROKU, and a DVD player and, better yet, lots of books and games, a Bose CD player with iPod capability, an eclectic assortment of CDs, and many comfy chairs for reading and dozing. Electric keyboard for respectful use.
Sunny, warm deck with huge hot tub and view of Marin hills, well protected from wind and fog. Several canoes. SUPS and kayaks get you on the water. Wireless internet access for those who can't leave work behind. Bikes available for use, as well as sand toys and life preservers.
Two rooms with Queen beds and a newly renovated third room with full sized bed, tv and window seat, toilet and sink - a perfect place for some to hang out watching a movie or sports while others relax in the living room by the fire.
Spectacular hiking and bird-watching are nearby, and the gentle waves at north end of the beach offer one of the best beginning surfing spots in California.
Please try to limit yourself to two cars only. THERE IS NO OVERNIGHT PARKING across the street on the open space. It is monitored by the Marin County Open Space district and they frequently come at night and ticket people. Please limit your guests, have them carpool, or park outside the gate if there is no room in the driveway.

Welcome to the Mushroom House, a one-of-a-kind coastal escape. Located on the Big Mesa in secluded Bolinas, this rustic visionary structure, built almost 50 years ago, stands boldly, peering down at the Pacific Ocean from its 3-story perch. Just 50 meters from the steep south-facing cliffs that drop down to the rugged beach and a 10 minute walk from nearby Bolinas Beach, the Mushroom House offers expansive views of Duxbury Reef, Stinson Beach, and Bolinas Ridge. Featured in House Beautiful magazine in the 70's as an architectural wonder, the house is truly like no other.
Forget the crowds, traffic and noise of everyday life, just take in the sound of the Pacific Ocean and seaside birds as you slow down to the pace of this magical place.
This 1500 square foot house has three floors. The first two are the mushroom stem. On the first floor, behind a swinging bookshelf, you will find a bunk bed (two beds) and full bathroom with shower. The large bedroom on the second floor has a queen size Necatar bed, 1/2 bathroom, and a beautiful view of the ocean from where you will lay your head. The third floor is the mushroom's cap, featuring a hexagonal, wide-open floor plan that includes a kitchen, living room, and dining area. There is a lovely loft with a queen size Nectar mattress that has pillow views of the ocean and mountain ridge. A full bathroom is right off the living room.
The sleeping arrangement of two queen beds and bunk bed allows for a capacity of 6 occupants. The house is ideal for couples, friends, and families, but there is a spiral staircase between each floor and a ladder to the loft, so convenience and safety should be taken into account when bringing small children or the elderly.
The third floor great room has new wood floors, an 18-foot high ceiling with stained glass at the top, and breathtaking views wherever you look. A sliding glass door leads to the dramatic deck where you can enjoy sunbathing, reading, and al fresco meals. You can also curl up inside and watch a movie on the 65'' LG TV, stay connected if you want through high speed internet, or listen to music on the bluetooth speaker.
On the property grounds you will find a shaded pergola for al-fresco dining, our 6 person cabin sauna with an adjacent outdoor shower (hot water), and friendly critters who we share our space with :) !
The town of Bolinas is an easy half-mile walk from the house, where you will find a quirky little downtown and lovely public beach. Bolinas has a post office (no waiting), a very nice restaurant (The Coast Cafe), a neighborhood bar (Smiley's - they serve burritos now too!) a library, several boutiques, and two grocery stores: The General Store has just about everything you need; The People’s Store, set back from the street, has organic fruits and vegetables and a good dose of Bolinas charm. Check out the Gospel Flat Farmstand on your way into town for the freshest produce that operates 24 hours a day!
The Mushroom House is extremely relaxing and hard to leave, but local activity is too wonderful to ignore. A walk to town and the beach is a must. If you like to hike, don't miss the Palomarin trail to Bass Lake and Alamere Falls, one of the most beautiful and satisfying hikes in the Bay Area. Just 10 minutes away from the house, the trail winds along the coast, heads inland, hits a beautiful swimming lake, then ends back at the beach where a roaring creek tumbles over a steep cliff onto the sand. Road biking, surfing, tide pooling, mountain biking, boogie-boarding, sand-castle building, and many other possibilities await.
The Mushroom House is a gem. It is not new or shiny, but it is warm, homey, comforting, and closely connected to nature's wonders. Migrating whales have been seen from the deck. A pelican carrying a salmon was spotted through the window by a guest doing dishes. The cleansing ocean air graces this special home every day, inside and out. Come experience the simple life.
Note: there is a Ring located next to the front door that monitors the front yard.
- "Everything was ship-shape in this charming, quirky house with fantastic views. The kitchen was well-fitted, tasteful decoration throughout. Would definitely rent again." - "Unique home with impressive views." - "Our family vacation had a perfect close at the Mushroom House! Communication was excellent, and the space for a family of 5 was perfect. We thoroughly enjoyed Bolinas and quiet days exploring nearby trails. House fully equipped to cook in and enjoy views of the ocean! The unique architecture of the house was incredible to learn about - very comfortable beds, plenty of linens, and loved the record player and puzzles!"

This small, light-filled house is on a level lot with a completely fenced back yard, with wooden deck, barbecue and lots of roses. The living-dining-kitchen area has peaked ceilings, an open floor plan and a wall of windows to the back yard and a gas stove-fireplace. There is another deck by the front door to catch the late afternoon sun.
Walk out the front door and turn west onto the quiet, virtually traffic-free dirt roads of the Bolinas' 'Big Mesa.' In two short blocks you are at the southern border of Pt. Reyes National Seashore -- a huge, grassy meadow leading from a horse ranch over the the bluffs above the Pacific (on a clear day you can see the Farallones). Or walk a few blocks south to overlook the surfers off Bolinas and Stinson Beach and to San Francisco and Devil's Slide further south, and then continue down the road to town and the beaches.

Craigslist Scam Alert: Please be aware that scammers are listing this property on Craigslist. The Oceanview House in Bolinas can only be rented on VRBO and Homeaway.
This charming and historic multi-family beach home is perched above the ocean with amazing views of the coastline, surf break, and lights of San Francisco.
With 5 bedrooms and private parking for 3 cars, this spacious home has enough room to comfortably fit 10 people. The upstairs features a master bedroom with a new king bed and ocean views. The second upstairs bedroom features a new queen bed within earshot of the crashing waves. The downstairs includes three bedrooms - 2 with queen beds and 1 with a bunk bed. In total there are 2 full bathrooms (1 upstairs and 1 downstairs), and half bathroom downstairs as well as a laundry room, 2nd living room / play room and spacious 2nd eat-in kitchen downstairs. Hear the ocean from every room in the house. The main living room with views overlooking the ocean is upstairs.
While removed from the traffic and pedestrian noise of downtown, it's only a 5 minute walk to the main beach due to a staircase shortcut. VRBOs mapping says its 16 minutes but its is much faster with the shortcut. 2 minute drive or 10 minute walk to downtown.
While the home's size and quiet neighborhood set it apart, it's really all about the stunning ocean views from the bright and sunny upper living room, the deck, and private lawn. The deck has plenty of seating and a gas grill. The large bright living room is lined with ocean-view windows, has a cozy wood fireplace, and comfortable furniture. The private yard is perfect for an afternoon picnic or letting the kids run around.
We are dedicated to making sure our guests enjoy their stay as much as we do and we take pride in our 5 star rating. The home is older and rustic much like most of the homes in Bolinas, but it's immaculate, the beds are comfortable and luxurious, and it is stocked with everything needed for a fun and relaxing vacation.
We care deeply about our home and our neighbors and ask that you book elsewhere unless you are responsible and respectful of both. We have strict rules in place to keep everyone honest.
About Bolinas:
Explore the best sleepy beach town in Northern California with more flavor and character than most combined. The house is minutes to the local market, The Coast Cafe (delicious farm to table organic cuisine), Smileys bar (one of the oldest bars in Marin) which features live music every weekend, shops, galleries featuring local artists, and a tennis court that is open to the public on a first come first serve basis.
Excerpt from Marin Independent Journal:
Bolinas is an unincorporated town of 2500 located 30 miles North of San Francisco at the southernmost tip of the Point Reyes National Seashore, surrounded by ocean and well-preserved parkland. Long known for its live and let live attitude, this spirited community of environmentalists, poets, surfers, artists, writers, and aging individualists doesn't have a mayor or a city hall, but its breathtaking scenery, rare wildlife, easy-to-surf waves make Bolinas a perfect destination for weekenders to find a quiet getaway, explore nature, and experience one of California's most culturally unique communities. Just a short drive away is the town of Point Reyes Station and the many local, and amazing oyster farms.
- "Park and then walk everywhere from this location.. to downtown, to the beach, to the lagoon/wharf. Breathtaking views too!!" - "I wish I could live at this house. The view of the ocean is spectacular and there was every possible thing we could need there. The bedrooms were comfortable and there was lots of room for our daughters, stepdaughters and their children. It was an easy walk to town. We loved the way the house was laid out and two kitchens was such a treat. We celebrated both a 70th birthday and Father's Day and it was wonderful."

- "Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was more than happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We have stayed in other homes along the lagoon but one of the best features of this house is the master bedroom overlooks the lagoon. Very peaceful. The hot tub was great and we enjoyed the canoes and paddle boards. Kitchen had all the amenities you could think of. Only minor negatives is the stove burners are not that great (but perhaps that is because we are spoiled at home) and the sofas in the TV room have seen better days. Be prepared to either drive or bike to get to the beach access points as this house is definitely in the middle of Seadrift Rd. Otherwise, we had a fantastic, relaxing time."

The house sits on the Bolinas Lagoon with stunning views of the water and Mt. Tamalpais. It started its life as a summer retreat on the SF Bay aroundthe turn of the century. These little houseboats were called Arks and they were moored near Belvedere and Tiburon. At some point in the mid-20th century, they were towed out to Bolinas and a number of them now sit on piers along Wharf Rd.
The Bothy is a 30-second walk to the beach and a 2-minute stroll to our downtown shops and restaurants where you can grab a delicious pizza at 11 Wharf or an Acai Bowl at Bovida.
The cottage features 1 bedroom and a comfortable living area with built-in seating and expansive views of the lagoon. There is a nice deck overlooking the lagoon with an outdoor shower. The galley kitchen has a small electric range with oven and has a lovely view of the breakers. There is no dishwasher.
There is parking on the street but there is no assigned spot. On the weekends in the summer, it can get crowded and it might take a few minutes to find a space and require a short walk (30 seconds..). Otherwise it’s typically easy to park in front of the house.
Laundry facilities are available in town at the local laundromat if needed.
- "Such a pleasant and simple accommodation in a location where you cannot help but unwind." - "Accommodations were excellent. The location is convenient to the center of town and the restaurants. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to a friend." - "easy and convenient: short walk to beach, equally short to 'town' small size didn't bother us – it felt bigger with smart solutions and stylish interiors; we liked the maritime styling. enjoyed watching the seals swimming in the lagoon. thanks!"

- "Such beautiful views from every room! Lots of balconies and a spacious yard. The house was gorgeous and as listed. The kitchen was well stocked. The location was remote with dirt roads and lots of potholes, but we made it in a minivan. Still just 13 minute from "downtown "Bolinas, and 20 from Stinson. A 3 minute walk to Agate Beach that had great tide pools. We had a great time and would stay here again." - "Wonderful/Funky house on the outskirts of Bolinas. Truly remote, fun dirt road to navigate with ample pot holes, but not intimidating. We got incredibly fortunate with the weather - fog sat off the coast and was able to enjoy eating outside overlooking the ocean. Primary has ocean views, open the windows and listen to the waves crash, bathroom has an extraordinary view as well. Management company provided us a BBQ and Charcoal preemptively due to malfunction on the gas grill. Wonderful stay."

Looking forward to staying again." - "The house/ property was amazing. The owners have put in a lot of love and thought into the place and the end result added to the enjoyment of our stay. The stay was so peaceful (everyone slept so well) and we had the most beautiful view of the sun set. The house was clean and very family friendly. We traveled with 2 toddlers and everything was safe. The location is close to main town and to beach. Loved that the property has an outdoor shower to clean up after a beach day. The people in Bolinas were also really wonderful… kind and easy to talk to. Owners were easy to contact and was quick to answer inquiries. Overall, great stay and great place to rent! Highly recommend! :)"

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We loved our stay here. The home is in a gorgeous location - very peaceful right on the water. We loved Bolinas and would definitely stay here again!" - "Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was very clean. I was very happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Overall we had a lovely stay at the house with four adults and a toddler. The location is amazing, and we loved the water access from the dock. The kitchen was well stocked and everything we needed to cook family dinners. One thing that I wish had been called out in the property listing is the lack of an actual shower in the bathroom. It's tricky for elderly guests to climb in and out of the old bathtub and not everyone wants to take advantage of the outdoor shower(although the surfers in the group loved this feature but grandma, not so much.) This property would be a 10/10 by replacing the outdated bathtub in the only bathroom! All in all we'd stay there again."

This one of a kind home sits on the Bolinas lagoon, steps away from the beach. Relax and unwind as you enjoy unobstructed 180 degree views of the ocean, beach, Mt. Tam, and lagoon. You'll be able to watch the surfers, seals, and tides as you relax on the deck.
The home is equipped high end furnishings from RH, Design Within Reach, and Serena and Lily. Direct fiber optic internet connection provides blazing fast internet speeds.
- "Lovely and well appointed In fairness, the loud construction next door that started before 8am could have been noted thanks!" - "This has become our family's vacation getaway long weekend go-to home. It feels like a home, so cozy and comfy and the perfect location right on the lagoon over the water. You can watch the seals and birds all day swimming in and out, watch the ocean waves crashing, and eat meals in the indoor dining table with beautiful views or outdoor large table on the deck. We used the bbq for the first time this visit and it was perfect for some great, relaxing meals. The kitchen is perfectly equipped, there's plenty of bedding, towels (beach and bath), laundry, and water toys of kayaks and canoe. The beach is 10 second walk away. Low tide each day is the best because it's beautiful sandy beach with coves and tide pools and shells. We saw a starfish and sea anemones, and crabs, and clams as well as spent hours on beach blankets, flying a kite, sunning, and chasing around my son on the beautiful beach. We walk into Bolinas, about a 3-4 minute walk into town, for ice cream cones, a live band outside at Smiley's, and easy access to very cute little grocery stores. It's certainly a heavenly place and we can't wait to return soon."

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: everything about our stay was perfect, the house, the pool, the location on the beach and the real estate company who arranged it." - "Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was clean. I was very happy with the location. I was very satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We loved the property and all of the great folks at Hwy 1. Truly, they are so professional. I know it's a beach house (a truly outstanding one at that),however, I do feel there could be improvement in the bedding/cleaning area. I found a pair of women's panties between the nite stand and master bed. In the guest house (we didn't use) there was a visible empty water bottle and frisbee under the chair and sofa. Indicated a lack of vacuuming. It needs more detail in cleaning. I personally took apart the refrig and cleaned well. The mattress pads were filthy (esp twin room). I washed and am hoping they do get washed with each visitor, as are the shams and bedspreads. Visitors like to feel clean upon retiring at nite. We do this in our vacation rental. Otherwise, we loved our family vacation and wouldn't hesitate to visit this beautiful property again and to recommend it to our friends. The pool and jacuzzi were a big plus, esp on the foggy days. We loved our visit and had a truly wonderful family vacation in this beautiful home."

Thank you for the gifts!!" - "Our recent stay could not have been more perfect, every aspect exceeded our expectations! The design of this beautiful waterfront home was so thoughtfully curated, modern beach that beckons you to cozy up on the couch next to the fire with a book or get lost in the view of the lagoon. - "We had a wonderful stay in Bolinas at Katie and Matthew's newly remodeled home. The views were stunning and the property is beautiful and exactly as advertised. The owners were helpful with quick responses to questions about the place. Great location, close to town. Highly recommend!" - "We really enjoyed our stay in this home. The renovation they've done is gorgeous, and we could not believe the views towards the Bay and Mt. Tam. We loved using the firepit at night under the stars. We also got to enjoy lots of wildlife around the property- deer, birds, coyotes on the drive up route 1 on Mt Tam, etc. The home is well furnished and feels very nice and new and clean. There was a nice dishwasher and laundry setup and abundant towels, etc. You may want to stock up on groceries etc before you get to the home, because the town (while charming) is small and relatively low on easy grocery shopping- there is a small general store but not too much in the way of "shopping." We ate at the Coast Cafe in town two nights which was excellent, as an aside. Would definitely come back for a future visit!"

Absolutely the best location in all of Bolinas! Smack dab in the middle of town. Short walk to EVERYTHING including the beach. Yet FAR off the main road, and deep within the back of our private, quiet beach compound.
Your own private beach shack! New, modern feel, simple, bright, lots of windows, cozy, small, off to itself, beach shack. Its own private backyard within the back of our beach compound. Private bathroom, with super hot outdoor shower, short walk away.
The space
Poets, surfers, artists, travelers, free spirits, people who throw a toothbrush and a swimsuit in their backpack/purse/pocket love this place. People who ask "Why is there no TV?", shouldn’t book. People with big rolling suitcases may not be a fit.
For the young, and the young at heart. There are twists and turns to get there. You’ll need to duck under grapevines and palm trees. It is a long windy path though a secret garden. It is dark path through trees at night with no lights. A fox might visit you. If you leave your food out a raccoon will eat it. A deer might sleep next to your door. 5 (quiet at night) chickens (no wake you up in the morning Rooster) are right next door.
The bathroom, with HOT shower is a short walk from your bungalow.
The space is small, but tall and feels roomy with lots of windows and light. It is 2 leather chairs and a comfy queen size bed.
There is a private yard in the back inside (within the must larger compound). Great to catch the sun or to look at stars at night. Yes, there are deers, foxes, raccoons and other wildlife listening to and watching you at night - but they are fenced separately from you.
Smack dab in the middle of town, next to the beach and feels like you are in the country. If the country had banana trees (with actual bananas! Because we literally have the best weather in all of Bolinas on our property. Sheltered from the wind, covered by the sun).
Is it magic? Yes. Is it for everyone? No. We've been ripping the sign down for decades for a reason. Not everyone should find Bolinas.
Guest access
Private beach shack in the backyard of our beach compound. Peaceful and quiet spot, steps away from downtown and short walk to the beach.

Our spot is quiet at night. We like quiet and so do our neighbors. No Smoking. Keep in mind the town itself is louder in the Summer and on weekends. Also the community center is very close to us, and sometimes hosts concerts (including great Reggae, generally twice a year).

Calif. wildflowers, native trees and grasses & quail surround this carefully designed 400 sq.ft. studio cottage with tiled, well-stocked kitchen, one queen bed, CA.bay flooring, large bathroom, clawfoot tub with shower, private parking and garden, 1/3 mile from Agate Beach, set in 1.5 acre native plant garden.
Please note that this listing is now only available for 30 days plus one. It is not being rented for short term rentals at this time.
The space
Enjoy the north-central coast of California at the Quail House in Bolinas, an aesthetically pleasing, immaculately clean, and comfortable retreat for singles, couples, or couples with a child under 5 or 6. There is much attention to detail throughout this private, separate building with its own parking place and entrance to the property. Located within a famous one and a half acre demonstration garden of coastal native plants, in the incomparable "hippie-chic" (as one visitor called it) town of Bolinas, one hour but a world away from San Francisco. Here at the southern end of the Pt Reyes National Seashore, 150 miles of hiking trails await you.
The cottage is an entirely self-contained 400 sq. ft (20'x20') unit that includes a full kitchen and spacious bathroom, with its own parking space, visited only by you and the quail. In the surrounding garden, we grow some of the many threatened native California wildflowers, for seed-collection and for the seasonal enjoyment of our guests and us.
The cottage is one large room, with a completely equipped new kitchen area, including apartment sized refrigerator, butcher block and tiled counters, and a new gas stove. The style is "California bungalow." Guests often remark on the furniture. The sound of the ocean, 1/3 of a mile away, will rock you to sleep.
Though we are renting mainly by the month, we have made an exception for the month of June 8 to June 30. Please discuss with us if you wish to bring a child with you, so we can ensure time to "baby proof" the cottage.
You will enjoy a new and comfortable queen size bed with organic sheets and down comforters, a reclining 2-person loveseat, and a spacious bathroom with a clawfoot bathtub and on-demand unlimited hot water for long, luxurious baths or showers after hiking. Fine bath products are available for your use.
We provide Peets or other high quality caffeinated coffee, and a wide selection of teas. We stock staples like olive oil and Balsamic and other vinegars and seasonings, and fine dutch cocoa for hot chocolate. When available, we share fresh eggs from our neighbor's backyard hens. Books on the area are supplied, including three books written by your host, partly about the development of this garden, "Gardening with a Wild Heart", "The Landscaping Ideas of Jays," UC Press, "California Foraging,".
Organic, local, salvaged, and re-purposed materials were used whenever possible in the construction of the cottage. The floor and shelving is made of locally-milled California bay laurel. Tile from the Sausalito Heath Tile Factory ornaments the kitchen, with a built-in butcher block counter. The high ceiling and many windows add to the pleasantness of the dappled sunlight changing throughout the day. A large coast live oak surrounds the cottage, providing roosting spaces for our local quail covey and a scenic backdrop for the cottage.
Coffeeberry, coyote bush, redwoods, and many native wildflowers and bunchgrasses, surround the cottage. The garden has been designed with the needs of California quail in mind, and their sweet and varied calls can be heard throughout the day at certain times of the year. This is why no pets are allowed. Sorry, no exceptions.
The Quail House is perfect for writers, with a spacious wooden dining table to spread out at, and a small private desk area as well.
Your neighbors are an eclectic assortment of local fishermen, surfboard shapers, woodworkers, one publisher, and several ceramicists. Your host is the proprietor of Larner Seeds, dedicated specialists in California native plants, so plant and bird lovers will find a lot to learn and enjoy on-site as well as in the vicinity.
Nearby Agate Beach is a 1/3 mile walk away, and includes Duxbury Point, a famous Marine Sanctuary for tidepooling and beach walking. It's a rocky beach, so if you prefer a sand beach, go downtown to Brighton Beach, or make the trek to Stinson Beach, 15 minutes south on Hwy One.
This town is a unique enclave of dedicated artists, writers, naturalists, and rugged individualists. If you choose, you can be busy all the time, with the many local events taking place in our lively community. The Hearsay News, available downtown at both grocery stores, lists all events.
A required Transient Occupancy Tax of 10%, added to the nightly price of $190.00, is collected by Airbnb to help pay for the fact that over 50% of Marin County, the unincorporated West Marin, is parks and open space for your enjoyment. Cancellations require one week in advance. Singles, couples, and families with one child under 5 can be accommodated.
Public transportation is provided by West Marin Stagecoach.
Downtown Bolinas is one of the sweetest downtowns in the world (in our opinion). Though we have only (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN) people in Bolinas, downtown you will find a restaurant, two markets, the library, the post office, several shops, a saloon, a sandy beach, a second-hand store, and an excellent regional museum. A downtown like this is a real center for the community, Explore!
Check out the events and classes at the Bolinas Community Center as well. Here are many interesting cultural events, and some of our visitors have thrown themselves with gusto into local events and classes. One couple planned their visit around a talk at the New School at Commonweal. You can go to their website and register. These talks are usually free. They've had most recently Michael Pollan.
The local saloon, Smiley's, is the oldest continuously operating saloon in California, providing a continuous array of a wide variety of musicians, both local and not.
There are two markets in town, one, The Bolnas Peoples Store, a natural foods store and the other, The Bolinas Market, providing local meats, seafood, and poultry. We also have a great restaurant offering local produce and seafood, the Coast Cafe, as well as Eleven, which has a small, delicious, ever changing menu. We suggest reservations on weekends. The brunch at the Coast Cafe is highly recommended. Indoor and outdoor seating.
The Bolinas Museum has top-quality exhibits and a fascinating and informative History Room. Musical events and exhibit openings often take place in its courtyard.
On Fridays, Star Route Farms, the oldest organic farm in the state, sells directly to the public as well. We also have a unique used bookstore, Michael's, where you can stock up on used books for $1.to $2 apiece! It is next to the Post Office on Brighton Road. Our local surf shop around the corner provides lessons and surfing supplies.
Located at the southern end of the Pt Reyes National Seashore, we have access to 150 miles of trails. Nearby is the Pt Reyes Bird Observatory, a must-see, as well as Commonweal, a well-known retreat center sponsoring an impressive array of NGOs and with a lecture series packed with interesting speakers. View (EMAIL HIDDEN)
A favorite trail begins at Palomarin parking lot at the end of Mesa Road, with access to Bass Lake, a favored summer swimming spot, Alamere Falls, and Pelican Lake. For the intrepid hiker looking for a challenge, these trails can be taken all the way into the northern part of Pt Reyes National Seashore. There are hikes of all lengths and difficulty. We are glad to advise you.
Only an hour's drive from San Francisco, we are surrounded by national and state parks and county open space. Mt. Tamalpais State Park, with its gorgeous views, the summer Mountain Play, and an astounding number of different ecosystems, is accessed just across Hwy One on the Bolinas-Fairfax Road and includes redwoods, serpentine, grasslands, and chaparral, with numerous beautiful trails available. Hikers will never run out of hikes around here, and surfers will be happy as well.
We are 10 minutes north of Stinson Beach and about half an hour from the renowned Muir Woods, where mighty redwoods can be viewed, a good stop along the way, with a great cafe and bookstore as well.
We love our area and enjoy sharing it. We can advise on hikes and restaurants or leave you to your own adventures.
Guest access
Guests have the use of their own private garden immediately surrounding the Quail House, as well as total access to our entire 1.5 acre site, including the Demonstration Garden, their own private parking space, the pond area by the Larner Seeds Office, and all the nooks and crannies and areas of special plantings. You are heartily encouraged to explore!
The whole garden is open to you, and we love to see guests finding their own favorite garden spots or taking photos throughout the garden ( please share). We also frequently host day after the wedding brunches for up to 45 people in the Quail House Garden, you supply the caterer.
Other things to note
Guests who wish to sample the life of the town are advised to pickup a copy of our local paper, the Hearsay News. Classes in all kinds of things are available at the Community Center, and there are many interesting cultural events to be enjoyed as well, both at the Bolinas Community Center, at Smiley's Saloon, music occasionally at the Coast Cafe, Bolinas Museum shows and openings, talks at Commonweal, and music and art, as well as organic vegetables, at the Farmstand.

The Bothy on the Bolinas Lagoon
The space
The Bothy on the Bolinas Lagoon is a renovated historic houseboat that sits on piers over the Bolinas Lagoon with stunning views of the water and Mt. Tamalpais. It started its life as a summer retreat on the SF Bay around the turn of the century. These little houseboats were called ‘Arks’ and they were moored near Belvedere and Tiburon. At some point in the mid-20th century, they were towed out to Bolinas and several of them now sit on piers along Wharf Rd.
The Bothy is well situated in the center of town. It’s a 30-second walk to the beach and a 2-minute stroll to downtown shops and restaurants, where visitors can grab a delicious pizza at 11 Wharf, an Acai Bowl at Bovida, or a local fish taco and beer while listening to live music at the oldest continuously operating waterhole in the state of California – Smiley’s Schooner Saloon. Or visit the Bolinas Museum to learn about Bolinas, its history, culture and art!
The cottage features 1 bedroom and a comfortable living area with built-in seating, 2 day beds, and an expansive view of the lagoon, with Mount Tamalpais and the city of San Francisco in the backdrop. There is a spacious deck overlooking the lagoon with an outdoor shower.
Otherwise, it’s typically easy to park in front of the house.
Laundry facilities are available in town at the local laundromat if needed.
2 night minimum.

The space
NOTE: Near the house, there is a cliff on the other side of the property line. Though there is a wire fence in place, it is best to keep children from venturing unattended on that side of the property, and the wire gate should be checked regularly to ensure it is closed at all times.
Cell coverage is spotty, so there is an internet landline for calls within the States..
There is satellite internet that is pretty solid, but it can be intermittent and should not be counted on for streaming.
The rural property is located at the end of a .5+ mile dirt road in a quiet, residential part of Bolinas. The neighbors value their quiet and privacy, and we have assured them that guests will respect this perfect, peaceful spot. All guests must park on the property behind the gate, or well off the road between the two driveways. Do not park on the other side of the road, and always leave enough room for fire trucks to pass.

This property was originally constructed in the late 1800's when San Franciscans came for weekends or whole summers via schooner. The most notable schooner was The Owl which shipped local butter, cheese, hogs, produce, duck eggs and more to the markets of San Francisco, then returned to Bolinas with mail. This home was once a milliners shop!

Fully updated with a curated mix of vintage and modern furnishings - our cottage has a mid-century design sensibility with luxuries like Coyuchi towels, a chef's kitchen, Scandinavian fireplace, outdoor rain shower, cedar hot tub, and new heated stone loveseat on the upstairs deck.
The space
There’s so much to enjoy: whether you find yourself taking hikes, lounging on the comfy indoor or outdoor sofas, cooking local produce, reading books, beach combing, playing board games, birdwatching, taking an outdoor rain shower, cuddling by the fireplace, listening to the record player, shucking oysters, surfing, puzzling, tidepooling, napping, hot tubbing, or just view gazing.
Guests can embrace indoor-outdoor living all year long with the spacious redwood decks, a cedar hot tub, outdoor shower and native garden. At 950-square-feet, with two bedrooms, the two-story home can comfortably accommodate one or two couples, a small group of friends, or a family of three or four.
The expansive, unobstructed mountain and ocean views (from the Pacific, to Stinson Beach, to Bolinas Bay, and Mount Tamalpais) will make your jaws drop. There aren’t many spots like this on the California Coast.
Note: If you’re looking for a raucous party house, big family gathering, or hosting a surf safari, the Ocean Parkway House isn’t the right spot for you.

We are dedicated to making sure our guests enjoy their stay as much as we do and we take pride in our 5 star rating. The home is rustic much like most of the homes in Bolinas, but it's immaculate, the beds are comfortable and luxurious, and it is stocked with everything needed for a fun and relaxing vacation.
Guest access
The entire house is accessible except for the crawlsapce underneath the house and any locked storage.

Local host contact info will be provided on-site for any issues that arise.
