It is only a 30 minute drive from Asheville, North Carolina.

This chalet-style cabin is equipped with many modern amenities, such as heated tiled bathrooms with a glass shower, jet tub, and its own sauna, a wood burning stove fireplace, ceiling fans, comfortable beds with luxury mattresses, updated kitchen with stainless steel appliances, and a covered parking area. - "This is an amazing log cabin in the woods! The cabin is absolutely gorgeous with 5 star amenities like a sauna and steam shower! The beds are super comfy and the kitchen has everything you need! Best of all it is quiet with no visible neighbors other than the wildlife and beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains! And they left us homemade cookies!!!!" - "This was my first time in a short-term rental home. I wasn’t sure what to expect. But the reservation process went smoothly, the home was as described and the overall experience in the home was wonderful! The one-lane road up the mountain to the home is narrow and steep. The lower section is paved but soon turns to gravel. You pass several other homes on the way up and must navigate a tight switchback. The first time in was a little confusing and thought certainly I had taken a wrong turn somewhere. But if you just follow the road, it takes you right to it. Once you arrive you are rewarded with an authentic mountain home with real charm and character. It sits on a steep mountain side completely surrounded by dense woods. The immediate area around the house and parking areas are flat, trimmed, and easy to walk around. You can either park within a few feet of the house or under a roof a few more steps away. I found the home to be clean, comfortably furnished and had all the details one would typically find in a well-appointed residence. Very cozy. Sitting outside on the covered porch in the early morning as the sunlight crept across the treetops, listening to the sounds of nature with the mountain view to the south was the very best part! Thank you, Thom! Your home is amazing and you are a great host!"

Why we love our home-
The wrap around deck and balcony allow for maximum relaxation. The exposed beams give it a cabin flare. It is perfect for a family because we have four bedrooms with three full bathrooms so everybody has there own space.. Its also a perfect house and location for a romantic getaway. The master bedroom has a high vaulted ceiling and opens up to its own private balcony. The master bath has a jet tub. Also on the 3rd story is a 2nd bedroom with two twin beds. The first story bedroom has a Master bedroom with its own private bath. The fourth bedroom has a day bed with a trundle. Our house is nicely decorated and is lightly lived in. It feels new and cozy like a cottage. Being a botanist, there are many floral paintings and prints. The house is located in close proximity to Great Smoky Mountains National park, Nantahala National Forest, and Pisgah National forest making it perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.
- "The Runaway Chalet offers a beautifully situated escape from the rush of daily life. Settling into the hillside, the home offers just the right mix of access to area attractions and quiet surroundings. 4 bedrooms offer enough space for the family and the hosts have left all of the details checked off the list in moving right in. If you’re looking to be close to downtown Waynesville, Lake Junaluska, Cherokee and other area sites this may well be the place for you. Check it out on your next getaway. You won’t regret it."

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: If you’re looking for a seriously secluded cabin this is the place. You will need 4wd/AWD vehicle to get up driveway! Traversing the driveway is not for the faint of heart and can be tricky. The cabin is well appointed with everything you will need. Very clean and comfortable with a fantastic view of the mountains. - "Cozy tree house cabin in a beautiful and quiet neighborhood! Loved seeing the sunset on the deck with my husband and dog every evening. My dog enjoyed looking out the loft window. It was nice having a fenced in deck. Fantastic Mountain View’s! Can’t wait to come back again." - "After visiting Gatlinburg on day 3 of our stay, I am sooo glad we stayed far away. This is much more about a getaway in the mountains. If you are looking for the touristy stuff of PF and Gatlinburg this is not for you. The drive to GSM isn’t that bad. About an hour to the major hikes. But there is so much to do in the Nantalahala Forest and the surrounding areas that are overshadowed by GSM that are just as great. Perfect location to drive the Tail of the dragon and go White water rafting. The house is nice…the pictures make it seem a bit bigger than it is, but it is the perfect size for a family of 6. Our group is all older than 16. Shelby is very responsive though we didn’t really have any issues."

- "I would absolutely rent this property again. The only two complaints that I have are the blankets on the beds were very thin, and the water pressure could have been better for the showers. The driveway could have been better labeled for the property, but that was a very minor inconvenience. Heavier motorcycles may have a bit of trouble with the looseness of the gravel, but it was very easy access. The property is awesome." - "We enjoyed our stay at your cabin. Check in was very easy and directions to the cabin were clear with a little upfront recon on the area. The cabin was clean and it had everything we needed for our week stay. We trailered our motorcycles to the cabin and had lots of parking for the trailer, truck and motorcycles. We also had no trouble riding our bikes to or from the cabin. It's very hard to find a cabin that's not on top of each other in that area and also has access for getting your bikes in and out daily. Thanks for the easy and relaxing time we spent in your cabin. We would pick this cabin again when back in the area."

A-Frame of Mind is a quiet a-frame that sits at 3000 sqft altitude on the side of the mountain off of Dick's creek. Even though it is not directly on the creek, you can see and hear it from the the home. The home boasts of sleeping space withe 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. Master BD is an open air loft and has a king sized bed. The other 2 bedrooms are on the main level. The 2nd bedroom has a queen, and third bedroom has a daybed and twin sleeper. Plenty of common space either downstairs or up in the master loft that can fit twin air mattress. Even though it feels isolated, we are only 3 miles from Great Smoky Exspressway. We are only 15-20 minutes to Cherokee and Sylva, Blue Ridge Parkway and Bryson City. We are 30 minutes to Waynesville and Lake Junaluska. Asheville and the Highlands/Cashiers area are only 55 minutes. Entrance to the Smoky Mountains is just on the other side of Cherokee. Even though we are only 3 miles from the major hyw, the road is combination of 2 lane and single lane gravel road that follows dick’s creek up to the home. The gravel lane is 1.5 miles to the home. During the heavy rains in summer the road may have ruts. In the winter when there is heavy snow or ice parts of the road may be impassable unless you have a AWD. However, I do not have AWD and have not had issues accessing the home. Dicks creek is a DOT state maintained road and will be cleared as full time residents live in this area. It is a very scenic drive making you feel the seclusion. There are other rental home in the area, but this home sits perched above on the side of mountain adding to the seclusion. The driveway is long enough to fit 3 vehicles and pulls right up to the home, so very easily accessible. A-Frame of Mind is in rural location and the home has satellite internet access. The maximum data plan has been provided, however it is only intended for mail and social media. It is not intended for streaming TV or movies.
PLEASE READ: I currently have a hot tub on the property for use by all my guests. Hot tubs can be difficult and expensive to maintain in the more secluded mountain areas. I will continue to maintain it, and most of the time have zero issue, please ask questions if you need. Please do not unplug.
- "We had a great stay to celebrate our daughter's 13th birthday. We vacation in the Smokies every year, and this is one of the better cabins we've stayed in. The only issue we had was that our daughter's allergies acted up a bit, probably because it was pet friendly. We usually try to avoid pet friendly cabins for this reason." - "This A Frame is the best. Location is with in a short distance to anyplace you want to go. The home was clean and very inviting. Beds were very comfy. Book this place. I will stay again next year."

HELEN UPDATE: Our home and town are ready to accept visitors again! Our road took a hit from the storm and will require a 4WD vehicle.
Come and relax at our cozy and unique A-frame. Enjoy the soothing sounds of the creek flowing alongside the house and the views at 4200 ft elevation. If you’re up for a hike, walk on the gravel road and enjoy the mini waterfalls streaming down the mountain. If you’re lucky, you may even spot an elk passing through. This is the perfect mountain getaway for couples, families, and friends.
While the pictures may reflect a small home, this cabin is quite spacious and can sleep 6 comfortably. The house was built in the early 80’s and has recently been updated. We know you’ll enjoy the unique style and charm.
What you’ll find in the space:
A fully stocked kitchen
An outdoor grill and deck
2 full bathrooms
2 bedrooms, 3 comfy beds
Clean linens for 6 guests
Games, puzzles, movies, and books for all ages
A work from home area
Internet is provided onsite. , Cell service and personal hotspots also work well.
Parking: There is plenty of parking available. 3 vehicles can fit at the top of the driveway and additional parking on the slope of the driveway.
Getting Here: This house sits at 4200 ft elevation, which means you will need to make the climb. The road is steep and rough, we highly recommend a 4WD/AWD vehicle. Once you arrive we will have a keyless entry so you can arrive anytime after check-in time. We recommend booking with traveler insurance.
Pets: We would love to welcome your dogs to come vacation with you. Please include the number of dogs when booking. (There will be a $60 fee charged per dog for additional cleaning).
Other Things to Note:
Due to higher elevation, water pressure at times can be low and internet speed is slow.
There is no central air, but given our elevation, we are typically 10 degrees cooler than the valley. Each room has a ceiling fan and its own baseboard heating for temperature control.
The fireplace is an antique, no fires are allowed inside.
There is one security camera observing the driveway only.
This is a perfect spot to enjoy the beautiful North Carolina mountains. Whether you choose to stay in or explore nearby attractions, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

This charming A-frame Chalet is set back just the perfect amount away from civilization. When you look out from the porch, you see a breathtaking valley surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. There is absolutely nothing like the beauty that lies here in our enchanted mountain getaway. Outside, you'll hear the relaxing babbling brook nearby, and if you wake up early enough, you might very well see Elk strolling down the lane, not 3 feet from the front porch on there way to find a nice green patch of grass for breakfast. It's the perfect place to have your troubles melt away while you relax in an ideal, secluded setting- while enjoying modern furnishings and amenities. The wifi is fast, over 300 mbps, and the TVs are all smart. The kitchen is fully equipped and the coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are on the house. If you'd like to stay in, our mountain home away from home is the perfect place to do it.
But it's also a great place to go out and have an adventure! There are so many incredible things to do nearby, it's hard to even list them all! Perhaps, you'd like to explore some waterfalls? Soco Falls is only 5 minutes away, and there are plenty more nearby. If you're feeling lucky, Harrah's Cherokee Casino is only 20 minutes away. If you'd like to try paddleboarding, kayaking, or canoeing, Lake Junaluska is only 10 minutes down the road! There are multiple horseback riding tours available in the area as well. There are also ATV/UTV tours in the area which are tons of fun! Have you ever driven on the Blue Ridge Parkway? Well it's one of the most spectacular driving experiences in the world, there are scenic pull-offs every mile or so because it's just so stunningly beautiful. Well, there is a Blue Ridge Parkway Access Point 5 minutes from our house!! There are also Slingshot rentals down the road. Slingshots are these 3 wheel motorcycles that have two wheels in front and you only need a regular drivers license to drive them, so people come from all over the world to rent them and drive them on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It's a once in a lifetime, spectacular experience. There's also tons of shopping, fantastic restaurants, and breweries, and live music all nearby.
Whether you want to relax, or go adventure, or maybe do a little bit of both... when you stay here, every moment is a breath of fresh mountain air.
- "Loved our stay! Everything was we needed was provided!!" - "Not there for very long but a perfect place to be." - "The place was very nice with a loft that had two big beds and a private bedroom downstairs. Convenient wash up sink outside of bathroom. The kitchen had what we needed to make meals, and a full fridge was good. The driveway was a little tricky with tight corners, but we made it fine with our Jeep. We even had an elk walk up to our deck as they passed through to the apple trees next door."

This cozy chalet is nestled in front of a 45 ft rocky outcrop. Sitting on nearly 3 secluded acres, this retreat feels miles away from civilization, but is actually less than 10 minutes to various restaurants, shops, and activities. Relax on the deck, take in the amazing views, and enjoy visits from local wildlife including elk and wild turkey.
The cascading creek running through the property provides the calming sounds of water rippling through rocks and over small waterfalls. Buck Mountain Retreat is perched on the mountainside at 4,000 ft above sea level. 4 sliding doors across the front side of the house provide mountain views from the living area and primary bedroom. Start your day with a beautiful view of Brown Lead Peak from your bed and end your day on the deck enjoying the crisp, clean air and sounds of the creek.
2 Bedrooms and 2 full baths are on the main floor along with kitchen, dining and living area. The basement includes a sleeping room, half bath and laundry room. Basement steps are a little steep so please use caution.
The rich history of this small mountain town and neighboring Cherokee Indian reservation has been incorporated into the home with paintings, handcrafted sculptures, and various décor from local artists and carvers.
The house is fully stocked with games, books, puzzles and everything you need for the perfect mountain getaway. After booking, we'll send more detail on some of our favorite things to do in the area and our favorite restaurants. Here's a little sneak peek -
- Hiking - several hikes of various difficulty levels and waterfalls within 15 minutes.

- Harrah's Cherokee Casino is a 25 minute drive
- Set a tee time for one of the 6 area courses within 25 miles of the house
- Take a day trip to Asheville or another local mountain town.
Road is privately maintained and not always immediately cleared after snow/ice. Driveway is paved, but steep and we recommend parking at the bottom of the driveway if snow/ice is expected. Bags of salt and shovels available if needed. 4WD suggested December through February, but not required. No 4WD needed spring through fall and driveway is motorcycle friendly.
**We recently added 2 security cameras. One camera is at the top of the driveway before you make the turn to park. The second camera is by the main entry door. Typically, the camera by the door is only on during arrival and departure days to make sure everything goes smoothly.
- "Property was just as advertised. Beautiful views. Secluded. It was a cabin but felt modern. Game room in garage was an added bonus." - "We had a wonderful time at house in the woods. The mountain view and listening to the creek. This place was awesome. I would most definitely stay there again." - "Buck Mountain Retreat is the perfect mountain house! It is in a beautiful location with easy access to lots in the area." - "Fabulous place with a wonderful stream to sit and relax next to… ahhh! The only caveat to this great place are the narrow spiral steep stairs from the bottom floor to the living quarters. I found myself going outside and around to the outdoor stairs. The dishes and glassware could be updated as there aren’t many of either ones. BUT.., those are easy fixes… the place is so comfortable and close to town… and again, the beauty of the wide stream can’t be beat! I would stay again!!"

SOME NOTES ABOUT THE MOUNTAIN LIVING:
Cell service may be spotty. Some roads in the general area may be twisty and winding. You will likely see bugs, furry critters and wildlife (including bears!). We do maintain the property with regular pest control, but due to the surroundings, or if doors are left open, or food is left outside the house, this can attract critters.
There are no refunds for storms or power outages. Winter Storms can also make roads impassable, so if a storm is in the forecast during your reservation, come prepared with water and non-perishable food, etc. We will try and help you and ensure your stay remains pleasant even during times where things go beyond our control
PLEASE NOTE: Fall/Winter is Lady bug season in the Mountains and these little bugs are attracted to heat, meaning your chalet and every other one out there that is warm! They will swarm to the houses and you'll probably see them alive/dead on windowsills, in vents, etc. Rest assured that your cabin has regular pest control and is professionally cleaned, including bug removal, before and after your stay. However, these bugs come back right away and unfortunately there is nothing that can be done about them until the season passes.
Note: This is the mountains and WiFi and cell phone service can sometimes be spotty and lose service. If the internet does go out, try power cycling the router first. We highly recommend you download maps of the area offline prior to arriving.
Thank you for letting us be your hosts & we welcome you to Maggie Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains in NC. We look forward to making this your best vacation!
- "Fun vibe! Beautiful view! Great open area for visiting!" - "This rental looked exactly like the photos! It was stunning and only 3 minutes from Chattahoochee skiing area. It was a little expensive but definitely worth it! We wished we would have booked it a day later to be able to stay in the house longer. The only thing that we had an issue with was that we couldn’t find the bunkers or game room. It was just two of us so it didn’t really matter, but it would have been nice to see for future rentals at this location. "

Good to Know
Our home sits in a peaceful mountain setting — you may see native wildlife or insects from time to time. We professionally treat the home, but nature is part of the experience.
Because of our elevation, high winds can occur. Please secure outdoor furniture and hot tub covers when not in use.
This is also a working farm property. Your hosts live nearby and may be present for maintenance or support. Our friendly dogs stay within our private area and are not allowed in guest spaces but may occasionally bark when greeting visitors.
•Guest Access
Guests have full private access to the entire WNC Winter Retreat, including both levels of the home, wraparound deck, hot tub, firepit, and game room. The only exceptions are two locked owner’s closets.
Our mountain road is well maintained, but because of the seasonal weather in Waynesville, we recommend AWD or 4WD vehicles during winter months for added peace of mind.
•Parking Instructions
The property offers ample gravel parking for up to four vehicles, making it ideal for families or small groups traveling separately. Please park only in designated gravel areas, not on the grass.
Please do not park in front of or close to the garage.
Parking is allowed only on the right-hand side of the driveway.
Thank you for helping us keep access clear and safe for everyone!
•Interaction with guests
our comfort and satisfaction are our top priorities. We’re attentive, responsive hosts available via VRBO messaging throughout your stay for any questions or assistance.
If something isn’t perfect, please let us know right away — we can usually resolve most issues quickly when we’re informed during your visit. Sharing feedback while you’re here helps us make sure you enjoy every moment of your mountain getaway.
Our home is accurately described and professionally maintained, and we take pride in providing a seamless guest experience. Refund requests for unreported issues or for circumstances beyond our control (such as insects, wildlife, weather, or local noise) may not be eligible. Requests submitted after departure or using reviews as leverage may be reported to VRBO.
We’re always happy to help and want every guest to leave relaxed, refreshed, and ready to return to the Smoky Mountains.

This cozy chalet is nestled in front of a 45 ft rocky outcrop. Sitting on nearly 3 secluded acres, this retreat feels miles away from anyone, but is actually less than 10 minutes to various restaurants, shops, and activities. Relax on the deck, take in the amazing views, and enjoy visits from local wildlife including elk and wild turkey.
The cascading creek running through the property provides the calming sounds of water rippling through rocks and over small waterfalls.
The space
Buck Mountain Retreat is perched on the mountainside at 4,000 ft above sea level. 4 sliding doors across the front side of the house provide mountain views from the living area and primary bedroom. Start your day with a beautiful view of Brown Lead Peak from your bed and end your day on the deck enjoying the crisp, clean air and sounds of the creek.
2 Bedrooms and 2 full baths are on the main floor along with kitchen, dining and living area. The basement includes a sleeping room, half bath and laundry room. Basement steps are a little steep so please use caution.
The rich history of this small mountain town and neighboring Cherokee Indian reservation has been incorporated into the home with paintings, handcrafted art, and various décor from local artists and carvers.
Guest access
Guests will have access to the entire house with the exception of a storage room in the basement.
Other things to note
The house is fully stocked with games, books, puzzles and everything you need for the perfect mountain getaway. After booking, we'll send more detail on some of our favorite things to do in the area and our favorite restaurants. Here's a little sneak peek -

- Winter activities - Just a 5 minute drive to Cataloochee Ski Area and tubing.
- The town of Maggie Valley offers something for all ages including restaurants, shops, mini golf, arcades, gem mine, fishing, axe throwing, the Wheels through Time museum and more.
- 6 minute drive to Maggie Valley Fairgrounds which offers cars shows, arts and craft fairs, concerts and more.
- Blue Ridge Parkway is a 10 minute drive from the house. Spend some time exploring and visiting the various scenic overlooks.

- Set a tee time for one of the 6 area courses within 25 miles of the house

Meet Ace.
Ace is simple. Ace is pure. Ace is pretty but we're sure she doesn't know it.
This consistently refreshed aframe cabin in the heart of the Smoky Mountains is the perfect respite from crazy long work days and endless errands. Nestled within a rain forest in the Smoky Mountains, the weather is moody and Ace's comfort is specifically geared toward taking full advantage of all 4 seasons. She’s not a full time Airbnb, but our second home; as such, she’s lovingly stocked with comfort.
The space
We didn't intend for Ace to be a short term rental, but she has provided us with so much joy, we want to occasionally share her magic with others. The thought that she may sit empty for long periods of time makes us sad and the demand to allow guests to experience her quiet simplicity has become exciting. We will be booking only 2 reservations per month so we can visit ourselves between each, ensuring a perfectly staged and welcoming visit for each set of guests.
Ace has an open living, dining and kitchen area that boast soaring ceilings and a wall of windows that blurs your understanding of inside/outside. You can sit on the new, comfy couches and you never have to choose between the fireplace or the view of the outdoors, because the furniture has been thoughtfully positioned to take full advantage of the space. The kitchen is small, but efficient, and fully equipped. There is a laundry room with new appliances and a large pantry area to keep whatever you don’t want to leave out on the counter. You see, minimalism thrives in this luxe, retro space, offering no distractions from your ambient setting.
The view changes seasonally, with mountain views in the winter, lush forest views in the Spring and Summer, and knock your socks off fall color in Autumn.
Ace is furnished with a combination of new items and a collection of MCM furniture that we've either hand plucked from our primary residence or have acquired from our favorite resale shops. Reducing, Reusing and Recycling is valued by our family and we hope you also enjoy the steps we've taken to minimize our footprint by way of selecting gentler, eco friendly home products and avoidance of single use disposables.
There are 2 bedrooms and 1 bath on the main level, and a cozy lofted main bedroom and bathroom that bring all the cozy, treehouse vibes.
We love to both begin and end the day with a dip in the hot tub, regardless of the season. Don’t forget to grab your pool towels and drink before you head out back.
All of the beds are newer with a King in the main bedroom, a Queen in one guest room and 2 twins in the other. Soft and cozy linens are on all of the beds, with extra blankets strewn throughout the entire house.
Golden hour on the deck is not to be missed. It should always include great tunes (there's a bluetooth speaker on the bar), candles, and whatever relaxation tools you use to melt into your surroundings. The deck has a conversation area and a dining area that accommodates 8 and is the perfect place to enjoy the view. With the gate on the deck left open to the back yard, 4 legged family members can easily access the fenced in play space.
The neighborhood is quiet and has a good mix of full time residents and second home havers such as ourselves. It is a lovely place for a strenuous and rewarding walk, and there are cascading waterfalls of various sizes and activity located throughout the neighborhood.
The basement is currently unfinished and used primarily as storage, and that is closed off from access. Linens are stored on both the first and second level linen closets, and there are multiple smart televisions and reliable wi-fi throughout the space.
Guest access
Ace is located in Wild Acres, a centrally located, custom home neighborhood that is central to all the wonders of WNC. Directly off of Soco Rd., the main thoroughfare that bisects Maggie Valley, it is elevated far beyond any traffic or disruptions that might impede your enjoyment of the natural surroundings. 45 minutes to Asheville, 45 minutes to Bryson City and the Nantahala Outdoor Center, 15 minutes to Downtown Waynesville and 30 minutes to Downtown Sylva and Dillsboro (our very favorite spots to dine and drink), the location is ideal.
There is parking onsite for as many as 2-3 cars, but the garage and basement are not yet accessible from the bottom floor, so it is all open within the wide driveway space. The driveway is steep, but fully navigable without the need for a 4 wheel drive vehicle.
Other things to note
Ace is not a full time rental; she is our family haven and we adore our time here. Please be mindful of your treatment of our home and it's furnishings.
We are also personalizing the space slowly. We wanted to really spend time here before we decided what we did, and didn’t, love. At some point, we’ll update the kitchen, and do more in the bathrooms, but for now, we really love the personality of the place, right down to the owl family in the laundry room.
There are lots of stairs, and the house is not baby proofed. We welcome children, but the house is ooequipped for adults and older children. Please supervise children, pets and drunk uncles to your fullest ability.
Also, if you have any pet allergies, please let us know ahead of time. We do allow pets of all sorts on the premises. Our home is very clean, and is professionally cleaned multiple times per month by our standing housekeeper, as well as deep cleaned monthly by us. But if you have severe allergies and a low tolerance, you should know that most of guests bring a pet, as do we.
WE ONLY RENT TO ESTABLISHED AIRBNB GUESTS WHO HAVE A MINIMUM OF 3, 5 ⭐️ REVIEWS.
