Welcome to the Culbertson House! Unique and a little quirky, beloved by the resident-owners and dozens of guests alike, this 100-year-old house occupies a rare space in the town of Brattleboro, a spot that is quiet and peaceful and on the edge of the forest, yet close to all major thoroughfares. We are 1.5 miles from downtown Brattleboro, with its offerings of fine dining, unique shopping, diverse cultural entertainment and funky nightlife. The major ski areas of Mt. Snow and Stratton are within a 40 minute drive.
In the 1950's the house belonged to the legendary Ely Culbertson- the "Father of American Contract Bridge" and author of many books on bridge as well treatises on world peace and utopian world government. He was a character!
The house is currently divided into three apartments. Your hosts live in the center apartment and there's another cute 1-bedroom at the front.
The beautiful wood-paneled walls of the Studio, the warm hardwood floors, views of the gardens, full bath, modern kitchen and tasteful tasteful decor make this space comforting, welcoming and happy. We have attempted to reflect the intense artistic character of our community by decorating the studio with lots of artwork, most of it created by your host, Julia, as well as other object d'art to give the space as artsy a feel as our community itself.
The location is ideal; the forest behind and beside the house gives a feeling of being in a quiet, secluded home in the woods, yet the apartment is only a half-mile from Interstate 91 and a few hundred yards from Rt.9, the main east-west state highway leading to western Vermont and New Hampshire.
We are proud of our flower gardens which surround the house, including herbs and vegetables growing right outside your door; feel free to pluck some parsley or pick a tomato or two for your dinner! There's also a relaxing place to sit outside for dining al fresco or enjoying a beverage, and we provide a Weber charcoal grill so you can grill a steak or throw some shrimps on the barbie.
We're in Vermont, of course, so winters at the Culbertson House Studio are terrific. We're right in the middle between the uber-resorts if Mt. Snow and Stratton, about a 40-minute drive to both. Additionally, we have the best ski deal in New England right here at the Brattleboro Ski Area at Memorial Park. Ski from 7-10pm, under the lights, for $5. It's one T-bar and one little slope, but highly recommended. It's where one of your owners basically learned how to ski as a kid.
The bustling, artsy town of Brattleboro is only 1.5 miles down the road. Just steps away, literally a five-minute walk, is the renowned Brattleboro Farmers' Market, operating on Saturdays from May to October, with fresh local produce, wonderful food trucks and a rich selection of local arts and crafts. Five more minutes of walking will bring you to Living Memorial Park, with a summer swimming pool, skateboard park, a Frisbee golf course and other features, and nightly softball games under the lights.
Nearby are incredible hiking trails (there are some great trails right behind the house), swimming holes, canoe rentals, a terrific 18-hole golf course, and
Brattleboro's bustling downtown, where you'll find unique shopping and fine dining (we've got lots of recommendations, from the tender ribs at the Top of the HIll grill to the exquisite gourmet fare of Peter Havens.)
Just to add, the trails on the big hill behind the house are extensive and beautiful, and cross-country skiers can follow them through the woods in winter, too.
We renovated the Studio with vacation rentals in mind; unlike many vacation rentals it is dedicated solely to our guests and you're free to make the space your own. There's private parking and a welcoming, homey feel to the space that we're sure you'll enjoy.
We do provide all the modern conveniences, including a dishwasher and large microwave, high-speed wifi internet, and a new Roku TV equipped with a Roku stick with open accounts for Netflix and Amazon Video
We look forward to meeting you and hope you enjoy your stay here at the Culbertson House!
- "Title says it - great location near town, very cozy, responsive and friendly hosts. Would recommend!" - "My husband and I had the pleasure of staying here a month for work. Everyday we woke and felt so lucky to be staying in such a beautifully decorated space with every amenity needed to be comfortable for a long term stay. Loved watching the snow from the big front windows and sitting by the fire at night. Our host also lives on the property and was able to help and answer questions as needed and is very friendly and has great suggestions about the area. Can easily walk to Vermont Country deli in the morning for coffee and donuts or giant cookies. The space feels like an extension of the hosts home rather than a place thrown together to rent out by the night. Great experience staying here and cannot recommend enough!"

Price was great!" - "Highly recommended: Most accommodating and friendly hosts possible Best location Beautiful setting" - "Our yearly pilgrimage to witness the fall foliage started in Brattleboro. 1886 Folk Victorian House built for the burgeoning “middle sort” of Brattleboro. Originally a two family the retired owner (Robert) is staying in the West room while he rehabs the 2nd floor. No noisy machines are used when guests are in the house.
The entire first floor has been rehabbed back to it’s first decade with a few more modern tasteful changes. You would share the apartment with quiet, friendly, considerate, people; a one or two night/week regular guest or an Airbnb guest or all to yourself.
“Shoes Off” household.

You have full access to your upstairs apartment and will enjoy total privacy during your stay. You are welcome to enjoy the outdoor spaces: the flower garden at the end of the driveway, seating near your door, and the large open yard of wild flowers behind the building. In summer I mow a "maze path" which is fun to walk!
Laundry Access: Important - note that the washer and dryer on premises are inside my studio and are available for mid term or long term guests!! They are NOT inside the apartment, and they are not available with short stays of less than 7 days, thank you for understanding. Guests staying 7 days or more can request the key to my laundry center located downstairs and simply agree to a shared schedule since I need to use the machines regularly for my work. I provide all detergent and cleaning supplies and am happy to wash, dry and fold your towels and sheets during your stay, or you may choose to do so. An iron and table top ironing board are available on request. For under-7 day stays, guests who needing to wash personal items may use a public laundromat located conveniently 2 miles away - it's open 7 days a week.
Other things to note
There are stairs to climb to reach the guest suite.
The comfy luxury pillow top bed is a double (full) size, extra long length. The couch is good for naps, but is not a sleeper sofa.
The bathroom is off the kitchen (not directly off the bedroom, you walk through the open living room to reach it).
There is no dishwasher, and no sink garbage disposal.
The AC is a wall mounted unit, effective, but it is not central AC.
Sorry, no pets!
Please park in the marked reserved parking spot for you. If you happen to be here during a snow storm, you will be asked to move your car briefly when we get plowed, then you can put it right back.
It's very quiet here for being in town, yet from your kitchen window you may hear occasional normal neighborhood sounds: a truck, people walking by talking, a dog barking and so forth. Your bedroom is the quietest room on this property.
Because this is Vermont, you may see mice, squirrels, deer, bats, foxes, skunks, raccoons, bears, beetles, ants, wasps, bees or encounter ticks in tall grassy areas and woods. Everyone visiting New England in spring, summer and fall should consider wearing tick repellent when outside. I proactively treat our building for mice and paper wasps. Help to prevent these pests by not leaving food or sugary drinks open, either indoors or outdoors. Please use the three designated bins in your suite for disposal of 1) trash - things like used tissues and Styrofoam, 2) recycling - rinsed plastic, glass and metal containers, together with clean cardboard and paper, and 3) compost, your food scraps such as egg shells, leftovers, coffee grounds, etc. go in this bucket. Thanks!
If you smoke outside, please don't bring cigarette butts in, just be sure they are extinguished and toss them in the outdoor trash bins across the driveway. Thanks!
There are many touches to the apartment to make it feel like home. It is located in the "Forest neighborhood", just a 2 minute walk from Main Street and 3 blocks from miles and miles of woodland trails. There's an excellent work space with fast Wi-Fi and cable internet. It is a comfortable, warm space walking distance from shops, restaurants, theaters, library, post office and museum. You will have all the parking you need with off street parking as well as parking in front.
The space
True Refuge is in a Victorian house built in 1850. The front door opens to a large hallway that either leads you to the kitchen and a bathroom or up a grand stairway to the bedroom and living room. The living room has a dedicated work space, a coffee/tea station, a comfortable fold out couch for sleeping 2, closet space, books to read and a 50" smart TV for your entertainment. I think you'll find the bedroom with a queen size bed cozy and restful.
Guest access
You will be able to access all the rooms in the apartment. There is a stairway to the basement from the front hall that leads to the shared laundry room or to the side yard and parking in the back.
Other things to note
When you are on the front porch and are opening the combination lock it's important to know that as you turn the combination lock to open it, you also need to be pulling the door handle towards you and making sure that is open as well.
