The space
The flat, with it's own entrance, is private and separate from the main house. It was remodeled top to bottom in 2015. It has a spacious great room layout and a separate bedroom/walk-in closet leading to a cheery sun porch where you will enjoy expansive views overlooking the El Cajon valley and mountains beyond.
I am using enhanced cleaning measures as well as leaving a 48 hour buffer between guests. Cleaning and disinfecting supplies are kept in the flat for your use.
Sleeping accommodations: Maximum of 4 guests. The queen-size air mattress can be used in lieu of or in addition to the sofa bed. Please let me know if you will be using the air mattress.
The flat is appropriate for kids. We have a pack n play and high chair at this time. We have games, puzzles, books and art supplies. Please note that the bathroom has a shower only - not a tub/shower combo.

The space
We are on 3/4 of an acre and our property is two levels. The main house and the studio are on the top of a hill and there is wheelchair and stair access to the lower part of the property where the tennis court and play structure are located. The studio has a queen bed and shares the space with a sofa, bistro table and kitchen area. There is a spacious walk in closet. The kitchen is equipped with two electric burners, a microwave, large sink with garbage disposal and is stocked with dishes, silverware and cooking utensils.

You will access the studio via a locked side gate next to our garage. You are welcome to share the outdoor spaces which include two different dining areas, sofa seating and seating around a propane fire pit and most importantly the pool. We also have a gas barbecue which you are welcome to use. We have a 10 lb dog “biscuit” who roams the yard and will be outside at times. She will bark but if we can introduce her and offer treats she will make friends. We may at times have kids or grandkids over swimming but are fine with sharing.
Other things to note
Pets - we are dog friendly and require a $75 per stay fee for up to two small (under 50 lbs) dogs. We have a small 10 lb dog. She is friendly once she gets to know you but will bark in the beginning or if she happens to be out in the yard and sees you. We have a small container of treats available if you want to make friends with her, she is usually playful with other dogs and doesn’t bite. If you have small children who are afraid of dogs this may not be a good fit even though she loves kids, she will bark before she gets to know them. ***Who uses the pool?***
Anyone staying in the yurt (max of 3), anyone staying in our newest rental up by our house (max of 2 guests), and another apartment in the pool area that fits 2 guests and our family of 3 (sometimes we will have a friend or 2 over especially during summer months) including children at times. We rarely have more than a few of our friends in the pool area and if we do, we try to be sure to let our guests know in advance. The pool is very large and It feels like a small resort/boutique hotel, where you may meet some new people/friends. There are many different seating areas around the pool and you can keep to yourself if that is what you wish to do. There are times when you may be the only person using the pool as well. Each of our units offers our guests complete privacy.
*Hot tub use*
We are always trying to save power where we can. To accommodate all guests, a reservation for hot tub use is required. Hot tub can be used for one hour and needs to be arranged with hosts. If a longer time is desired, there is an extra fee.
We are located on the border of El Cajon and Lakeside in San Diego (about 20 miles east of Downtown, which is why we call it Eden East :)) with easy access to the 8 freeway. Our place is not in the city of El Cajon, it is outside the city and feels more like a country retreat on our farm. We are just beginning to live our longtime dream of sharing our land and space with travelers, tourists and friends. We have a 2.5 acre property and the apartment is tucked away down at the pool, separated from the main house.
Nearby activities include Lake Jennings, which offers fishing and hiking, as well as several gorgeous parks to visit.. perfect for a family or working vacation. Not to mention all of what San Diego has to offer :) Perfect for a snowbird vacation or on the way to the wineries in Ramona or Temecula, or a trip to Julian...you really can't go wrong in San Diego :)

Barbie’s Guest House is a constantly evolving art project that has its roots from before the Barbie Movie was released. This is the first time we have made it available beyond our circle of friends - it is a beloved space by many in the San Diego community.
The guest house is located at an estate home in gorgeous Mount Helix. This is a studio and offers a full kitchen and a spacious private patio where you will find many places to sit all adorned with hand painted hearts surrounded by beautiful and handcrafted curtains that you can close for complete privacy. The space is creative, colorful, private, and offers a quintessential indoor/outdoor living experience. The queen bed is brand new, has a memory foam topper and the home comes with all the linens and blankets you need during your stay. For couples the mirrors surrounding the bed on all sides can provide a sexy and romantic experience, however this home is also great for a getaway with a kid who is a Barbie fan!
The kitchen has everything you need to cook and eat in style. This includes pots, pans, rice cooker, knife set, toaster, coffee maker, tea kettle… it’s an experience where all appliances are pink! You will also enjoy modern and new plates, bowls, stainless steeler tumblers, wine glasses and pink cutlery and be provided with cooking oil and spices. The outdoor BBQ is a fantastic place to grill! In general you will find many nice touches, upgrades and amenities all in our fun theme!
The salt water pool is heavenly and kept heated to a comfortable level. There is a flowing waterfall with a secret cave (shhh!) and a waterslide for you to enjoy along with some lovely floats for those lazy moments you may want to relax in style. Reclining lounge chairs are available under an umbrella for your comfort poolside, and a cooler is provided if you want to enjoy chilled drinks while enjoying some sun. The pool area is shared with the main house - however we don’t use it when guests are enjoying it so it will be your private oasis.
Very important - the pool is steps away from the guest house patio - there is no gate between the guest house and the pool. For this reason we cannot accept bookings with small children who are not strong swimmers as it is a safety issue.
Beautifully landscaped property is full of succulents, flowers, and art. Outdoor spaces are equipped with color LED professional lighting spotlighting trees and a custom made statue called “Standing Tall” that was commissioned from an acclaimed artist who has created impressive art pieces for world renowned events ranging from Burning Man to the White House. We hope you enjoy the many great spots for photos, our new IG page (barbiesguesthouse) may give you additional inspiration.
We do have two friendly awesome dogs, they are kept gated at the main house except for stays over 4 nights. They are also available for play with a guest dog or to receive your pets and love for anyone who wants to interact with some sweet canines.
Please note there is no TV in the guest house - however there is high speed wifi. There is also a hot tub on premises which can be turned on to a nice 104 upon request.

There is a large driveway with ample parking and your own gate next to the guest house. The guest house sits next to one of the most impressive old growth trees you’ll ever see - the Mt Helix neighborhood in general has lots of trees and flowers and has one of the more lush microclimates in all of San Diego.
Owner lives in the main house and will be available to ensure you are comfortable.
Other things to note
Filtered water and high end bathroom amenities (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, makeup removal wipes, sunscreen, toothpaste) are provided. There is a medium sized fridge in the unit, and several great grocery stores nearby.
We welcome guests with one dog - must be dog friendly as we have two. We do keep our dogs gated at the main house for stays of 4 nights or less. We also welcome your dog playing with ours if you desire. If your dog swims they must be groomed and well brushed before entering the pool as dog hair can interfere with the pool filter so please do pack a dog brush. We take special care to carefully clean after any guest with a dog for the comfort of all our guests so for that reason we do charge a slightly higher cleaning fee to those bringing their dog.
We do know our pool area is a fun and beautiful spot and for this reason sometimes guests want to invite a friend or two over and that’s fine with us! However please be aware that our house rules are that we do not allow any large gathering, and we do request that you ask first about having anyone over who is not on the booking.

Trained pets are allowed in the unit, but not inside the pool or on the beds, to give everybody the cleanest stay as possible.

Mountain Views: Freshly renovated, quiet and spacious studio loft in private neighborhood. Close to coffee shops, grocery stores, and quick access to major highways. 500 sqft open concept. Laundry, Fast Internet, Cable TV and streaming services. Additionally, if you like oranges and avocados we grow them on the property (Seasonal of course). We also have a chicken coop and fresh eggs on request.
