Cliffside Log Cabin w/ Large Deck for Enjoying Spectacular Views & Wildlife
Cabin
Boise, Idaho, USA

This authentic log home, constructed in the early 1990s, is stunningly located on the edge of a cliff in the mountain residential community of Wilderness Ranch, just 24 miles northeast of Boise off of Highway 21 on the way to historic Idaho City. The house has almost 1,500 sq. feet of deck on three sides that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside dotted with Ponderosa pines and populated by a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, elk, and fox.

The cabin features a cathedral great room incorporating a fully outfitted retro kitchen, a six-person dining room table, a large kitchen island that can seat four, and a living room with a wood-burning fireplace (which you are free to use, but you must bring your own firewood). Two sets of glass French doors open to the deck. Also on the main floor is a full bathroom with a double vanity, shower and jetted tub (not a hot tub!), all original to the house; a master bedroom with a queen bed and glass sliding-door access to the deck; and a second bedroom with one queen bed and one twin. Please note, however, that there is currently no accessible clothes washer or dryer.

From the main floor, a log stairway leads to a large loft, which features another full bath (shower only), a full-size bed and full-size sofa bed. You'll also find there a collection of several hundred movie videos and DVDs for your viewing pleasure on a flat screen TV! Because the loft has log railings with large gaps that present falling hazards, this area is not suitable for unsupervised small children.

Wilderness Ranch has privately maintained dirt roads and the road leading to the cabin is narrow and steep in some places. While a two-wheel drive vehicle is fine for accessing the cabin most of the year, you must have a four-wheel drive vehicle with studded snow tires and/or chains during the months when there is likely to be significant snow on the mountain (November through March). There can be significant climatic differences between Boise and Wilderness Ranch. Even when there is no snow on the ground in Boise, the roads at the ranch can be snow covered and icy. Also during periods of heavy rain (spring and fall), the roads can become muddy and difficult to transverse. No refunds will be given for poor road conditions or inclement weather.

Please note that as an authentic log cabin, with exposed log interior walls, in a wilderness area, there more issues with dust and insects than a regular house. In the fall (September/October) when the temperatures drop, we have challenges with wasps trying to get into the cabin, notwithstanding that we employ an exterminator. So if the sight of a wasp or insect in the house would bother you, this is not the vacation rental for you!

Be aware that cell phone coverage at the ranch (and on the way from Boise) is spotty or not available at all. However, the house does have a landline phone.

Please note the map may show Bogus Basin ski area as close-by, but those roads are not open in winter. To get to Bogus Basin, you need to drive into Boise and then back out. Trip takes about 90 minutes.

Final note: Pets and domestic animals of any kind are not allowed anywhere on the property, inside or outside the house. Violation of this rule will subject you to immediate removal, forfeiture of your security deposit and additional charges.

I love all the wildlife, and peace at the location. The cabin itself is charming. The host is responsive and helpful." - "We enjoyed our time at the cabin as it was exactly as it was pictured! The view was amazing, but could do without the echoing road noise from below." - "Great cabin! Great view! Kids loved it. We would definitely stay again"

Guest Reviews:

- "Turn off the personal electronics and enjoy a simpler life for a couple days. This was our second stay at this fantastic cabin, again for three wonderful nights. It’s the perfect couples retreat to unwind and reconnect. We unpacked, made ourselves comfortable and enjoyed a couple of adult beverages while we made dinner for two. We lounged around, listened to the river and the wind in the trees while we enjoyed the hot tub in the rain and sleet. The fireplace gives a cozy atmosphere that you can warm up in with your partner and relax to. The kitchen has just enough equipment and basics to make some tasty dishes, but if you’re foodies you’ll want to pack your favorite pan along with any specialty tools and ingredients that you might need to spice things up. This is just the right amount of out of the way for a physical, mental, and emotional reset if you need a break from your everyday routine and activities."

Guest Reviews:

- "We spent 4 days and 3 nights here over Labor Day 2024. The property was beautiful and peaceful. Kitchen was well stocked, beds were very comfortable and appeared to be newer medium firm memory firm. They were very comfortable. The covered deck was perfect to sit and visit and listen to the creek. The only disconnect for us was not knowing that the game room was in a separate building, thus, some of the sleeping quarters were also in a separate building (above the game room). There was no bathroom in the game room which was a bit of a challenge to navigate with littles. However, the game room was perfect for the kids and the grands and everyone loved the property and amenities. The host was friendly and responsive to any concerns. I would recommend the Wishing Well to anyone looking for that cabin/woods feel that is not too far outside of Boise. Great place!"

This beautiful cabin is on a private dirt road. This is not a trail but a private road which dead ends on private properties. Therefore, ATV's, snowmobiles and motorcycles are not allowed. Our road is fragile so please be kind! :)

We want you to enjoy your peaceful stay at Ponderosa Highway Retreats. During the winter months, 4 wheel drive/all wheel drive is mandatory and chains are highly advised. We have the proper equipment to rescue you if you get stuck for a nominal fee. However, this will mean a half mile hike up for your phone to reach WiFi signal so please take our advice and chain up during ice and snow! :)

We hope to see you soon at Ponderosa Hwy. Retreats!

Guest Reviews:

- "Comfort and tranquility" - "We enjoyed the seclusion. Maybe two cars drove by all weekend. Walked a ways and never saw the next cabin. The cabin itself is a little dated. A few updates would go a long ways. The layout itself was nice. There were a few items missing in the kitchen, which I'm notifying the owners directly about....which would make life a little easier while cooking. Hopefully they'll look into that! I still give it an overall 4 stars, as we enjoyed our time together as a family."

Remote, Romantic, Rustic, Rural Cabin
Cabin

The Cabin: It is a rustic, romantic small cabin with large wrap-around deck nestled in the pine trees, 8.2 miles to the Capitol Building in Downtown Boise. Built in the summer and fall of 2007 as an agricultural structure to support a native seed and tree operation. It has rarely been rented. Beautiful heritage fruit orchards are within walking distance. You may see elk, deer, wild turkeys, quail, other wildlife, and I recently saw evidence of a bear. Some say cougars are in the area, too, but I haven't seen any..

What to do? The possibilities:

Snow shoeing, cross-country skiing and hiking, for the active.

Reading, writing, thinking for the reflective.

Planning and scheduling for the planner.

Napping and resting, for the tired.

Intimacy and romance for the romantic.

You will not see another vehicle or structure from this property. A non-intrusive caretaker is near, but not on the property.

This is not a traditional offering: The cabin has a serene ambiance, with a view, under the pines, a BBQ pit for cooking, a "sheepherder" wood stove for heating & cooking; solar for lighting.1 1/2 baths with shower; water from a spring and a sleeping loft for 2 and a bedroom for 2. Could sleep 6.
Also propane for cooking and heating. You must feed the chickens.

Off grid: Solar power; water from a spring. About 10 degrees cooler than Boise, and above the inversions Daily rate: $100 per night, with 5-night minimum. 20% discount if arrival by bicycle, cross country skis or on foot; $100 cleaning deposit. available December 2020. A well socialized dog is OK. Cats, not so much.

Everything is clean: deck, towels, pots & pans, dishes, floor and furniture. Bottled water, basic food condiments, flashlights and candles are provided. There is a BBQ on the deck and fire pit, a wood-burning stove, a bookcase, and games. Firewood is provided.

Weather: From November to March, you can expect snow. Today, there are a couple inches of snow, but the roads are mostly clear. That being said, a four wheel drive vehicle is a must when staying at this property (if you're coming up by car). The elevation of ~ 4,600 feet usually puts you above the Boise inversions, which can be depressing. Expect 10-15 degrees lower than forecast for Boise. Parking: very limited; bring no more than one vehicle. No noisy motorcycles, ATVs. Reliable (mostly) AT&T and Verizon cell phone service is usually available.

Driving distance from the Capitol Building in downtown Boise to Cabin is about 8.2 miles. It is not a good road. Driving time is about 20 minutes. You could also arrive by bicycle or hike (everyday many bike or jog to the nearby summit from Boise).
